Sam’s holding his own
• By Sam Coughlan
YOUNG SAILOR Sam
Foster, 11, is holding his
own against much older
opponents despite regularly
being the youngest on the
water.
The Halswell resident has
been sailing since he was
6-years-old and is now competing
against opponents up
to eight years his senior.
Sam said he enjoys the
competition.
“It’s fun, but I just don’t
want to get on the wrong side
of them,” he said.
Sam’s father Shane Foster
was the one who first took
him out sailing, and is probably
his biggest supporter.
Foster hailed the work his
son was doing in holding his
own against more experienced
yachties.
“It’s phenomenal what Sam
is achieving,” he said.
Multi-use
cards for
Hornby
2022. • By Sasha Watson
WOULD constructing a new
mixed storage and residential
development in Hornby be a
positive move?
Hornby Ward councillor
Mark Peters believes so,
following the city council’s
resource consent approval in
January of a large-scale mixeduse
development at 22-24
Amyes Rd and 16 Branston St.
The proposed development
by Williams Corporation Ltd
is for 274 residential units and
80 storage units to be built
with associated
access ways
and earthworks.
Said Peters:
“I think with
the increasing
housing
demand, it will
give the area a
Mark Peters
number of affordable, modern,
dry and good quality housing,
which everyone should have
the right to.
“It is also revitalising an old
industrial site and turning it
into a usable space.”
The proposed 80 single-level
storage units will extend along
part of the industrial general
zone and the railway on the
internal boundary.
New water pipes on
Memorial Ave
We’re replacing old underground pipes on Memorial
Avenue between Ilam Road and Roydvale Avenue.
To do this work quickly we need to reduce Memorial Avenue to one lane
in both directions around our work sites. Expect delays at peak times.
We’re also working in the area upgrading roads, including the Nor’West
Arc cycleway, between Memorial Avenue and Ilam Fields. There will be
lane closures around our worksite. Detours will be in place.
We know roadworks are disruptive for you, so our contractors are
working on these projects at the same time so we can get out of your
way sooner. All work has been planned to keep traffic flowing.
ECan to review bus routes
• By Sasha Watson
ENVIRONMENT Canterbury
has started a review into bus
services in Hornby after it was
requested by the Greater Hornby
Residents Association.
“Hornby cannot continue to
be ignored,” association spokesperson
Marc Duff said.
After considering feedback
from the community, the association
unanimously voted to
send a letter to ECan asking for
an urgent review to investigate
how the bus services can be rerouted
to provide better service
to passengers in the southwest
and improve access to the new
Matatiki Hornby Centre.
Said Duff: “It is not unrealistic
to expect many that will be
wanting to use the centre and its
hydrotherapy pool will travel via
bus, especially with the population
movement and people moving
back after the earthquakes.”
The review will look at the
travel options available and the
need for the Orbiter or a similar
city wide service to include the
centre on its route.
ECan public transport strategy
and planning manager Sonia
Pollard said any alterations
to the bus services are still to be
determined.
“We note that the facility is
already within walking distance
for many from routes 140
“We will be reviewing the letter
and the requests it makes
. . . we will liaise
with the Greater
Hornby Residents
Association
about this
in due course.
There is no set
time frame for
a review at this
stage.”
Marc Duff
The 130 Hei Hei/Avonhead
route passes through Hornby
and stops at The Hub but does
not go past the Matatiki Centre.
One bus-goer Jocelyn Harlin
said she travels from Templeton
to The Hub’s bus stop but then
has to board another bus to access
other parts of Hornby.
She said the buses don’t “reach
all of Hornby”.
“Most of the bus trips take two
trips to get to where you want.”
Harlin used to catch the bus
from Amyes Rd to get to the
Hornby Medical Centre – but
now the route is no longer in use
and she either has to catch multiple
buses or walk “for a while”.
Hornby Ward city councillor
Mark Peters said expanding the
bus routes in the southwest of
the city would create less waiting
or walking time to amenities
goals.
“I sincerely hope we can
institute a quick and adequate
transport option for Hornby;
whether it be adding bus routes
or creating a second orbiter journey,”
said Peters.
“I’m willing to work directly
with ECan staff, or offer suggestions,
as we’ve got to make
travelling to and from the nearopen
Matatiki Centre as easy as
possible for everyone.
“The most important and
immensely sensible thing to
take on board is making sure
we service as many patents as
possible.”
Duff said the Matatiki Centre
will be a “popular” destination
for people living in the “greater
Hornby areas” and further away.
“Finding a solution, like adding
to the Orbiter route, will
mean anyone wanting to come
to the centre can without jumping
on to three buses and having
to walk part of the way there
anyway.
“With the opening of the
new Matatiki Centre, the
Dress Smart shopping centre,
the Hornby Mega Centre, the
largest club in New Zealand via
membership and the planned
high residential housing,
Hornby cannot continue to be
ignored.”
Struggling wastewater system a concern
• From page 1
Exclusive access to the storage
units, which will operate
independently of the residential
complex and will be available for
general hire, will be from a noexit
right of way off Branston St
via a security gate.
The residential complex is to
consist of 22 single-storey onebedroom
studios, 23 two-storey
one-bedroom lofts, 40 dual key
one-bedroom studios across
20 units, 54 two-storey onebedroom
units, 102 two-storey
two-bedroom units, 18 twostorey
two-bedroom units with
a garage, 11 two-storey threebedroom
units with a garage, and
four two-storey four-bedroom
units with a garage.
There are to be 33 single garages
and 211 uncovered parking
spaces, alongside an additional
24 uncovered visitor parks and
33 spaces in front of each of the
garages, and for the units without
garages, there will be cycle parking
facilities.
Greater
Hornby Residents
Association
chairperson
Derek Phelps
said he agrees
with Peters,
seeing as the site
otherwise could
Derek
Phelps
be left “largely empty and ugly”
in a residential area.
MULTI-USE: The proposed residential complex could be situated at 16
Branston St, currently occupied by Terra Cat. Right – The site at 22 Amyes
Rd is currently empty.
However, Phelps said: “The
biggest questions that need
to be answered, are how the
wastewater system and traffic
movement would be affected by
such a development.
“The association held a meeting
about two weeks ago which
brought forward more questions
than answers. The wastewater
system is struggling at the
moment and there have been
back-ups and blockages in close
vicinity to the development site.
“We are wondering how the
extra strain on the system will
fare as the infrastructure won’t
be able to handle it. The other
big aspect is how busy our roads
are already - Amyes Rd, in
particular, has enough problems
with normal traffic. Trucks using
Branston St and Boston Ave, now,
have a lot of traffic.”
Another concern Phelps
mentioned was about how the
council put out the approval
as a non-notified application,
meaning “staff don’t have to
come and ask residents what they
think.”
Said Peters: “The application
report states community
concerns about infrastructure
and traffic were taken into
account including sewer
capability and ability to host the
units.
“I also questioned staff
repeatedly to ensure such matters
were seriously considered and
adequate means are taken should
the development go forward.”
The application report has
considerations of multiple effects
of the potential development
including; noise, odours and
dust, residential character
and amenities, shading, trees,
outdoor living, surface drainage,
earthworks, transport efficiency,
crime prevention, industrial
hours of operations, availability
of industrial land, servicing, and
construction effects.
The city council’s head of
planning and consent John
Higgins said the decision was
considered and made by a
planning commissioner.
“There is a specific framework
under the Resource Management
Act and Christchurch District
Plan which applications are
assessed against. While a
resource consent has been
granted, no building consent
has been received. The property
is currently being marketed for
sale.”
Until 2025, the site will
continue to be occupied by Terra
Cat, which provides industrial
construction vehicle/equipment
services.
The company will then vacate
to newer purpose-built premises
elsewhere and part of the
company’s operations will move
to 20 Branston St, to the south of
the application site.
Williams Corporation Ltd
did not respond to a request for
comment about its plans.
Open day offers
insight into
Freemasonry
THE CANTERBURY Masonic
Charitable Trust will be hosting
an information desk at the
Freemasons Open Day, at
Ferrymead Heritage Park on
Sunday (10am–4pm).
Local groups, charities and
community organisations are
encouraged to attend to discuss
how to apply for funding.
In celebration of its 60th year,
the trust committed $60,000
to the Air Rescue Trust to
support annual training costs
for helicopter rescue pilots on
Instrument Flight Rules.
IFR allows pilots to fly in
low visibility, such as in fog
or low light. The ability to
perform in challenging terrain
and conditions is central to
the crew’s effectiveness in
responding to emergency
situations. All rescue pilots
must undergo annual training
and checks, and the significant
donation helps to support this
service.
Over the past nine years, the
trust has funded the Freemasons
Christchurch nursing
scholarship, for applicants
undertaking the Bachelor of
Nursing at Ara Te Pūkenga.
Other recent recipients of
charitable grants from CMCT
include NZ Spinal Trust,
Gilberthorpe School, Seabrook
MacKenzie, Christchurch Land
Search and Rescue, and Graeme
Dingle Foundation.
By raising funds from car
parking near the Hagley
Netball Courts during winter,
plus a donation from the trust
that was matched by a national
charity, CMCT raised enough
to purchase all the netball
Sam placed fifth out of 14
at the Canterbury starling
championships at the weekend
while being the youngest there
by almost two years, and will be
in the nationals at Lyttelton this
weekend.
Foster thinks Sam’s got a shot
of doing well.
“At the South Island and
Canterbury competitions he got
fifth, and he was the youngest
competitor there.
“If he keeps it up, he’ll do
well.”
Foster said good coaching
helped.
“It’s really important as well to
have people around you. We’re
with the Waimakariri club and
Jeff O’Leary, who’s the coach out
there, has lifted his game quite
a bit.”
Sam attends Hillmorton
Intermediate and lives in
Halswell.
He has already met sailing
royalty as well.
“He was at the P-Class
nationals a few weeks ago, and
met Peter Burling, and got a
selfie with him,” said Foster.
He says Sam has put the
hard yards into everything,
sailing-wise.
SUPPORT: Sam with dad
Shane Foster. Above – Sam
snapped a selfie with sailor
Peter Burling.
“He’s had to work hard for his
boat, a big portion went into it
from him with making money
by feeding cats and dogs and
things like that.
“But it’s turning him into a
pretty handy guy, he can just
about repair it by himself
now.”
Sam says he’s constantly
working on improving.
“If I’m not on the water, I’m on
land doing theory stuff.
“Visualisation, so going
through a plan in my head of
how I’m gonna sail that race,
and fitness, and I’m on the water
every day I can.”
Take a classic and make it vegan
Beetroot mushroom
wellington
Serves 4
Nut-free
Ingredients
2 outer leaves of 1 Savoy
cabbage, stems carefully removed
320g sheet of ready-rolled vegan
puff pastry
4 beetroot (beets) in brine
non-dairy milk, for brushing
For the mushroom duxelle
1 Tbsp olive oil
500g chestnut mushrooms,
chopped
3 garlic cloves, finely chopped
2 Tbsp Dijon mustard
splash of soy sauce
grated zest of 1 lemon
3 Tbsp chopped thyme
salt and freshly ground black
pepper
To serve
Vegetable gravy
Mashed potatoes
Green vegetables
Method
• Preheat a fan oven to 180°C.
Line a large baking tray or pan
with baking parchment or a
silicone sheet.
• Bring a large saucepan of water
to the boil, then add the cabbage
leaves and blanch for a couple of
minutes. Remove and add to a
large bowl of cold water.
• Meanwhile, for the duxelle,
heat the olive oil in a large frying
pan, add the mushrooms and fry
over a medium heat for 10-15
minutes until softened.
• Add the garlic and fry for
another minute. Add the mustard,
soy sauce, lemon zest and chopped
thyme, and season with salt and
pepper. Transfer the mixture to a
food processor and blitz until very
finely chopped, then set aside.
• Drain the cabbage leaves and
pat dry with a paper towel or clean
dish towel.
• Unroll the puff pastry on to the
lined baking tray. Neatly place the
cabbage leaves along the middle
of the pastry and top with a layer
of the mushroom duxelle. Next
place the beetroot on top. Finally,
spoon the remaining mushroom
duxelle over the beetroot, packing
everything in with your hands and
making an even layer of duxelles
around the beetroot. Make sure
you leave at least a 5 cm border
around the pastry edge.
• Lift and pull the pastry over
the beetroot and mushroom
duxelle horizontally on one side,
gently stretching the pastry if
necessary, then repeat on the other
side to create a log. Fold the ends
of the Wellington under. Lightly
score the top with a knife, making
a criss-cross pattern (or whatever
pattern you like).
• Brush with a little non-dairy
milk and bake in the oven for
35-45 minutes until golden brown.
Serve with gravy, mashed potatoes
and green vegetables.
Berry crumble cereal bars
Makes 16
Gluten, Nut and Soy Free
Ingredients
For the crumble
280g rolled oats
180g Medjool dates, stoned
80ml maple syrup or use agave
syrup
1 tsp ground cinnamon
60ml coconut oil
½ teaspoon vanilla extract
splash of non-dairy milk
(optional)
For the berry chia jam
200g fresh or frozen berries
1 Tbsp maple syrup
1 Tbsp chia seeds
grated zest and juice of ½ lemon
handful of mixed seeds
(optional)
Method
• Preheat a fan oven to 180°C.
Grease a baking tray and line with
baking parchment or a silicone
sheet.
• Add all the crumble
ingredients to a food processor
and blitz until they come together
to form a crumbly dough.
• Add two-thirds of the mixture
to the baking tray and press down
firmly with the back of a spoon
to fill the tray. Leave to set in the
refrigerator while you make the
berry chia jam.
• Make the berry chia jam by
adding all the ingredients to a
saucepan over a medium heat.
Cook, stirring, for 5 minutes,
mashing the berries as they soften,
until slightly reduced. Don’t worry
too much if the jam is still runny,
as it will thicken up in the oven.
• Remove the baking tray from
the refrigerator and pour over
the jam. Top with the remaining
crumble mixture. You can also
add a sprinkle of seeds for added
goodness and crunch.
• Bake in the oven for 30
minutes, or until golden brown.
Once cooked, leave to cool in the
baking tray for 5-10 minutes, then
transfer to a wire rack for about 1
hour, or until the crumble reaches
room temperature before cutting
into 16 bars.
Tips
• Make sure you leave the
bars to cool completely before
slicing as this will stop them from
crumbling. Plus, the jam will set
better.
• The bars can be stored in
an airtight container in the
cupboard for up to three days and
in the refrigerator for a week. Or
freeze and defrost the day before
enjoying.
Futuristic VW ID.4 goes the extra mile
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
THE ID.4 is a milestone on
the road to full electrification
for German automotive giant
Volkswagen, clocking in as the
company’s first vehicle built on a
dedicated EV platform.
There’s plenty going for the
ID.4 in terms of space, technology,
performance, and versatility.
For our market, it’s a two model
show comprising the generously
appointed PRO $74,990
that is under scrutiny in this
road test, or the more lavishly
appointed $79,990 PRO+. Both
go the EV distance better than
most, with real world electric
ranges of 519km. The ID.4 has
the standard SUV body shape
with its sibling, the ID.5, opting
for a more sophisticated coupelike
appearance. I preferred the
clean-cut and less intricate styling
of the ID.4.
The honeymoon is over for
EVs. In a double whammy
they lost the generous clean car
rebates on January 1, and from
April 1 they must pay Road
User Charges. This is the date
the RUC exemption EV owners
enjoyed for over five years comes
to an abrupt end. From that date
owners will be charged $76 for
every 1000km they travel in their
EV – the same amount light diesel
vehicles such as Utes pay.
Getting behind the wheel of
the ID.4 is a tad surreal with
the vehicle sensing your presence
and automatically starts
when you sit in the driver’s seat
Ratings out of 10: Performance 8; Handling 8; Build
Quality 8; Comfort 7; Passenger and Load Space 8; Value
for money 7; Safety – Five Star ANCAP crash rating.
Overall points out of 10: 8
using the smart key. The test car
had heaps of heft from a beefy
77kWh battery and an electric
motor producing 150kW of
power and 310Nm of torque.
This is more than enough and
with some to spare, to shift this
decent-sized SUV with genuine
zip. It cocoons you in silence,
whether it’s a laid back aroundtown
excursion, or a lively open
road dash.
Throttle response is exhilarating
and addictive. Standing
start acceleration provided by
the electrified system makes
most conventional engines look
slouches.
A roomy and welcoming cabin
has an abundance of usable passenger
and cargo space. Instruments
and controls are designed
with meticulous Germanic
attention to detail, and are easy
to read and use. There’s a 12-inch
central touch display, multifunction
steering wheel, push button
start, heated front seats and
steering wheel, with the latter
adjustable for height and reach.
A 30-colour ambient light palette
lets you have a lot of fun around
choosing the mood of the cabin,
from bright and bouncy
to laid back and chilled.
Safety is paramount,
and the ID.4 delivers in
emphatic fashion with a
coveted 5-Star ANCAP
safety rating. This was
earned through leading
edge safety tech such as
Front Assist with Predictive
Pedestrian and
Cyclist Protection. Side
Assist with Rear Traffic
Alert warns the driver of
collisions with other vehicles,
cyclists, pedestrians and static
obstacles.
All the excellent ride and road
holding traits associated with
Volkswagen are embodied in
the ID.4. The suspension sees
Macpherson struts fitted at the
front and a multi link set-up at
the rear. Both work their magic
to deliver an immensely satisfying
drive, right out of the top
draw. Rear-wheel drive offers
effective traction over most road
surfaces from the good, the bad,
and the down right hideous.
The high-voltage battery fits
snugly into the floor of the ID.4
between the axles, with its low
centre of gravity giving the
vehicle exceptional agility and
balance during brisk cornering.
With its solid and compact European
feel the test vehicle had
a genuine and desirable point of
difference over many of its peers.
This is decidedly advantageous
in one of the fastest growing and
most competitive segments of
our new car market.
The test vehicle was subjected
to an unrelenting assortment of
bruising bumps and potholes,
on a couple of lengthy drives
on rural roads that didn’t show
a shred of country hospitality. I
emerged from this experience
with a deeper respect of the ride
comfort and handling talents of
this outstanding EV.
