Residents
frustrated
by ongoing
road
closure
• By Dylan Smits
A GROUP of Lyttelton residents
are frustrated by what they see as
city council inaction on repairing
a slip that has blocked an end of
their street for 18 months.
“We’re pretty angry because
we pay good rates and we expect
more from our council,” said Ross
Pde resident Kathy Bessant.
Bessant and her partner Ken
Claydon say they have dealt with
numerous inconveniences on
their “truck-wide” street since
part of the road slipped away in
July 2022 after heavy rain.
Ross Pde intersects Jacksons Rd
and Ross Tce, with the closure at
the Ross Tce end.
“We’ve got a very narrow,
awkward, steep street. It’s one of
the steepest bits of Lyttelton,” said
Claydon.
Another Ross Pde resident,
Jane Seaford agreed with Bessant
and Claydon, saying the lack of
progress on the road reopening is
getting “beyond a joke”.
A city council spokesperson
said Ross Pde has been closed for
longer than anticipated due to the
slip area being too damp to safely
remove.
First festival in a decade a success
FOOD, FUN and music
entertained about 500 people
at the first Little River Music
Festival in a decade.
“We had a fantastic time,”
said event organiser Todd Tulk.
The festival was organised
in part as a fundraiser for the
renovation of the Little River
community shed.
It was a family affair at a
beautiful location on Tracy and
Peter Wright’s farm, said Tulk.
“The bands were amazing
and are all keen to come again
next year.”
Former lead singer of The
Exponents, Jordan Luck, headlined
the event with his band.
“All the bands built up to the
last hour and a half of the Jordan
Luck Band. (It) was a day
well spent. The place erupted.
It was so fulfilling to see everyone
so happy and having fun.”
Christchurch-based alternative
pop-rock band Patients
opened the concert followed by
Little River quartet, the Western
Valley Road Band.
Up next was The Late Starters,
best described as “new
Kiwi, old school music”.
Then Christchurch music
legend Al Park performed followed
by Adam Hattaway and
the Haunters, an alternative
rock n’ roll band.
“A big thank you to all our
sponsors, the volunteers and
especially to all the amazing
bands putting their time and
talent up for free for such an
amazing cause,” said Tulk.
Plans are already in the
works for next year’s festival.
Luck band headlined the
Remediation work to
start at Godley Head
ASBESTOS remediation work
at popular heritage site Godley
Head will start this month.
Derpartment of Conservation
senior ranger heritage
and visitors Mandy Black said
work is due to begin today.
“All going to plan, the
campsite area and historic gun
emplacements will reopen to
the public in June,” she said.
The campsite area and
Lighthouse Cottage was closed
before Easter 2021 after unsafe
levels of asbestos were found
in the gravel roads on site. This
prompted wider testing which
discovered asbestos contamination
at the gun emplacement.
Large trucks and trailers will
be using the section of Summit
Rd leading to Godley Head for
the duration of the works.
Black said the section of
road from Evans Pass to the
Godley Head carpark should
be avoided during working
hours of 7am to 6pm, Monday
to Friday.
“Walking and mountain
biking tracks in the area which
are currently open will generally
remain open, but some
short detours and brief temporary
closures to some sections
may be in place,” she said.
“Extra care will need to be
taken if crossing the road.
“We know Godley Head is
a popular site, hosting about
100,000 visitors per year before
the closure, so we’re really
looking forward to getting it
open again as soon as possible.”
Black said in the meantime
the site will remain fenced off,
with security cameras in place.
“Disappointingly, the site
has suffered from some theft
and vandalism while it was
closed, such as the copper gutters
and pipes being stolen.”
Godley Head is one of
New Zealand’s best coastal
defence heritage sites. Sitting
on the headland at the
entrance to Lyttelton Harbour
Whakaraupō, the site offers
outstanding panoramic views
of the harbour and coastline.
Black said it has been a long
journey to plan and secure
funding for the remediation
work.
“We know this closure has
been disappointing for some
people who have wanted to
enjoy the site, but we put the
health and safety of its visitors
first.”
“We want to thank
everyone for their patience
and for respecting the access
restrictions.”
Fully booked surf event
relies on ‘army’ of helpers
• From page 1
“We couldn’t do this without
the huge army of volunteers from
the club, the wider community
and a core group of sponsors.”
Connor Duncan-Caley was one
of last year’s participants.
The 14-year-old has dealt with
motor-function issues since he
had a brain tumour removed
when he was 8.
“Being out on the board gives
me lots of joy. SURFable gives me
the opportunity to do something
I can’t normally do and I love it,”
said Connor.
The event is fully booked, and
Mannix said every year there are
more people interested than can
be accommodated for.
The session in Scarborough will
run from 10am to 3pm.
Butt said he is “pretty stoked”
the event he spurred has now
lasted for a decade.
“The idea was to make it sustainable,
so that’s why we hooked
up with the surf clubs.”
Butt’s idea helped create other
surfing events for disabled people
from 2012 to 2013 in Ruakākā,
near Whangārei, and with Kaitaia
College.
Mannix said past years’ events
have been rewarding with smiles,
laughter and tears of happiness
coming from all involved.
“Many have never had the opportunity
to experience being in
the ocean before,” he said.
“It is a huge event for the surfers,
their families and the army of
volunteers who give up their day.”
Surfers register through schools
and community support groups.
They have a wide range of disabilities
from blindness to autism.
After finishing their 30 minute
session the surfers will be treated
to a BBQ.
“That warms them up when
they get out,” said Mannix.
The longboarders surf club has
about 50 members from across
Christchurch, ranging significantly
in age and ability but all with a
passion for surfing and friendly
competition.
They celebrated their thirtieth
anniversary in September.
Residents say continuing
road closure is a safety issue
• Turn to page 1
Once conditions had dried
out and allowed for removal to
take place, the spokesperson
said there was “ambiguity as to
whether the concerned area was
public or private land. This was
eventually resolved.”
They said work to reopen the
road should be well under way
by June.
But residents feel the ongoing
closure is an accident waiting to
happen.
Claydon said he sees several
vehicles a week struggling to
reverse out of the street after
realising it cannot be used as a
short cut between Ross Tce and
Jackson Tce.
He said a driver nearly slipped
off the road a few weeks ago
while reversing.
“Some people are no good at
backing down hills.”
There was a sign on Jacksons
Rd, warning vehicles of the road
closure but this was removed
about a year ago, he said.
There is still a road closure
sign on Ross Pde, but it is too far
from Jacksons Rd to be useful, as
vehicles have already turned into
the parade by the time it comes
into view.
FRUSTRATED: Ross Pde residents, Ken Claydon and Kathy Bessant at the Jacksons Rd
end of their street. The other end has been closed since part of the road slipped away in
July 2022. Below – The damaged part of the road has been temporarily covered.
“It’s absolute stupidity,” Claydon
said.
He said the closure also created
issues for deliveries.
“If I’m getting a delivery of
firewood or anything, the guy
with the trailer has got to back
up the hill.”
The residents said they are
frustrated with the lack of visible
progress.
“There’s a sign up there that says
temporary. I’ve rung the council
several times and asked them
what’s happening and they say ‘oh
yes, oh yes, it’s going to be fixed’
but nothing is done,” he said.
The city council spokesperson
said the design for a new retaining
wall to prevent another slip
and keep the area dry is under
way.
“We are hoping the wall will
be constructed by June, and the
road opened.”
Claydon said he will believe it
when he can see the wall under
construction.
Water use
restrictions
in place on
peninsula
WATER restrictions are
being put in place for Akaroa,
Duvauchelle and Takamatua as
dry conditions put pressure on
water supplies.
Level 2 restrictions came into
effect last week.
The restrictions mean
hand-held hosing only, with
no outdoor water use allowed
between 3pm and 9pm.
Unattended hoses, sprinklers,
and garden irrigation systems
are not permitted at any time.
A city council spokesperson
said the streams that supply
drinking water to these areas
have dropped steadily in recent
weeks.
Electronic signs have been set
up at the entrances to Akaroa
and Duvauchelle to advise
about the water restrictions.
Water restrictions will remain
in place until further notice. If
water use is not reduced, level 4
restrictions may be introduced.
The council is monitoring
water levels on Banks Peninsula
and any changes will be
communicated on electronic
signs and on Newsline.
LETTERS 9
Simpler solutions than
rerouting pathway
THE IDEA of relocating the Coastal
Pathway is fraught with unintended
consequences. It would require either
extensive land acquisition from coastal
landowners, or construction of a pathway
out in the Estuary itself, either by
reclaiming more land or constructing a
viaduct.
A simpler, cheaper solution would be to
widen the path through Redcliffs village
and past Barnett Park by eliminating
on-street parking (and potentially incorporating
the eastbound cycle lane) and relocating
the bus stop from its spot in front
of The Spur cafe. (Or pushing it out into
the traffic lane as it has been elsewhere
along Main Rd.) This grants path users an
extra 2.5-4m of path to share.
For those immediately about to whinge
about the loss of street parking I must
remind them that the parking around
and under the abandoned New World is
still open to the public 24/7, as is the car
park in Barnett Park and behind The Spur.
Heaven forbid you have to walk an extra
30m to get to the fish and vhip shop.
I consider this solution to be obvious,
expedient, and inexpensive. As such, it’ll
never be done.
-Samuel Zelter
I would like to point out that the land
in front of these properties is the King’s
chain. The route that is available at present
is dangerous to say the least. The bikes at
present run in front of various shops and a
busy medical centre.
Why are a small group of people holding
the city to ransom? They did not pay
for this land and as a resident that walks
this area I feel we need to rectify the route
of the walk/cycleway
-Jenny Stokes
I am speaking as a 30-year resident who
just loves living here but also speaking as a
4-5 day a week cyclist.
Personally I believe one of the issues
is that some cyclists use the pathway to
Sumner as a training track, which it is not.
Serious cyclists have had and still have a
perfectly safe bike lane on the road to ride
as hard as they like on their training runs.
My simple solution is at the Spur Cafe
car park entrance all cyclists dismount
and walk a mere 100 paces till past the
fish and chip shop where the path is wide
and easily shared. There the cyclist could
remount and amble along to Sumner as
is the intention. Travelling from Sumner
then the operation is reversed.
Everybody is safer (at) no cost. Dismount
walk the 100 paces, have a chat,
smell the roses or the Estuary – whatever,
but just grow up and share for goodness
sake.
The dismount areas can be well signposted
at both ends with painting on
the path etc. To cut costs I’ll even do the
painting for free.
-John Higginson (abridged)
As part of a group of keen cyclists who
bike regularly from the city to Scarborough
and back, I find no issues with riding
on the Main Rd Redcliffs shops for such a
short distance.
This section of Coastal Pathway has
a shared footpath for slower bikers and
those with kids and permanent road
marking and cycle lane on the road itself
for faster bikes. So, two separate options
that can be taken.
Over the years we have never had a
safety issue, although we mainly use this
route in the weekend, so can’t comment
for during the week.
We always stop at The Spur cafe for a
coffee so diverting the Pathway along the
edge of the Estuary would have a direct
effect on business, for the cafe and other
shops that provide refreshments and icecreams.
This would be a total waste of money to
even consider this alternative route, when
there are already two safe options to pass
through these shops on the Main Rd.
-Dave Cook (abridged)
The Re-route Coastal Pathway group
states they’re concerned about people
coming out of shops, walking into cyclists.
So for an approx 25m strip they consider
dangerous, they are seeking to create a
second pathway, hundreds of metres long,
that would cost tens of millions of dollars.
As (city council planning and delivery
manager) Jacob Bradbury noted, issues
relating to consents, constructability and
property ownership have been previously
considered and ruled out the feasibility of
such projects. Contrary to popular belief,
deeds land or King’s chain doesn’t extend
along the whole proposed re-route. It is
not possible to walk the length even at low
tide – without entering private property,
so much of the path would need to be
built in the estuary with water on both
sides! The environmental impacts would
be devastating.
Cyclists going too fast are an issue along
the whole pathway (actually to a lesser extent
around the shops where the busy café
is well set back behind trees, lamp post,
outdoor furniture).
If it is really cyclists hitting people they
are worried about, better to address this
issue directly and more immediately eg
more visible signage, introducing cycle
speed limits, and moving fast cyclists to
the road.
A FLOCK of about 50 whitefronted
terns nesting near the
cruise ship berth in Lyttelton
Harbour will soon migrate
after a successful hatching
season.
The number of terns in the
area has increased significantly
since last season, said Lyttelton
Port Company environment
and sustainability advisor
Charlotte Jones.
“It’s great to see them
settling in here.”
Nesting season lasts from
October to February and when
the birds migrate, Jones said
some are likely to travel as far
as Australia.
“There were only a couple of
nesting pairs last season,” she
said.
“We’ll just keep an eye on
the birds and expect to see
even more next year.”
The terns are nesting in the
disused wharf and rocky sea
wall near the cruise berth.
The species is categorised
as an “at risk” species by the
Department of Conservation.
Jones said pest monitoring
conducted by the port
company has likely
encouraged the growth of the
colony.
“There are reduced pests
around the area which would
increase the nesting success,
as pests like possums, rats
and mustelids will predate on
chicks and eggs.”
At least 20 chicks hatched by
the end of December, she said.
“It’s a really safe spot for the
birds.
“They just nest in amongst
the rocks. They just gather a
few stones and not much nest
material, and just find little
nooks and crannies.”
Jones said the terns’ nests
are located a safe distance
from any disruptive port
operations.
The white-fronted tern is
distinguished by its black cap
and bill contrasted with its allwhite
body.
“I think that they’re a pretty
striking little bird,” said Jones.
White-fronted terns are
SAFEGUARDING: A whitefronted
tern with its chick at
the end of the wharf.
considered at risk by DOC
due to declining numbers,
but there is still a sizeable
population in New Zealand.
Jones said the port company
is also exploring available
options to create a better
environment for seabirds in
the area without interfering
with daily operations.
The port is also host to the
common red-billed gull, which
have built a similar-sized
colony to the terns, as well
as a small number of oyster
catchers.
Lortan’s law: Playing for the team
over personal milestones
• By Sam Coughlan
DESPITE BREAKING records
this season, Heathcote batter
Tyler Lortan isn’t driven by
personal milestones.
The 31-year-old has rattled off
589 runs in the Christchurch
Metro premier one-day competition
in just six games – breaking
the record set by Sydenham’s
Bevon-John Jacobs in 2023.
He has passed 50 in all but one
of those innings, and his best
knock was a massive 165 against
Lancaster Park in the opening
game, featuring 10 sixes.
Lortan broke the record with
exactly 100 not out off 84 balls to
help Heathcote chase down 323
against Burnside West Uni – his
third ton of the season.
He still has at least two games
remaining to continue his form,
with the last round of the league
season and a semi-final – at least.
Lortan said he wasn’t even
aware he was close to the record.
“I’ve just been focusing on
what I can do in the moment to
win games at cricket for the team
I’m playing for.
“I try and focus on that as
much as possible.”
HARD HITTER: Tyler Lortan bats for Heathcote against
Burnside West Uni earlier in the season.
PHOTOS: PAUL CORLISS
He said he doesn’t play the
game in hopes of achieving personal
success.
“What drives me really is,
you know, sitting in a winning
changing room and singing a
winning song.
“If I didn’t score any runs and
we won the comp, I think I’d be
pretty satisfied.”
But with Lortan contributing
heavily to Heathcote’s recent
success, it ‘means everything’
to him.
“It’s what’s driven me forever.
“And it’s the reason I play the
game, to make sure that, you
know, I can do whatever I can to
make sure my team’s in a good
position.”
Heathcote have five wins and
one loss from their six one-day
games to sit second in the table,
only one bonus point behind
league leaders Lancaster Park
and have qualified for the
semi-finals with a game to spare.
A win this weekend against
fifth-placed East Shirley would
mean that semi will be played at
their home ground of Heathcote
Domain – where Lortan and fellow
batter Dan Stanley have taken
advantage of the small boundaries
to score runs a-plenty.
The match will be played on
Saturday at Burwood Park with
the first ball to be bowled at
10.30am.
18 Bay Harbour News Wednesday February 7 2024

Morey a busy man indeed
Carl Bonniface
continues his series
on Edward Morey’s
heritage contribution
BEFORE EDWARD Morey
finished building Holy
Trinity Church in
Lyttelton, the
foundation stone
for St Cuthbert’s
Anglican Church
in Governors Bay
had already been
laid (January
30, 1860). Both
were designed by
George Mallinson.
Morey would have
been putting the finishing
touches to Holy Trinity and
starting work on St Cuthberts
at the same time – a busy man
indeed.
It took two years to construct
the church because not long into
the build, the turret and two
gables gave way after wet weather
and strong winds. Buttresses
were added to stabilise the walls,
which were made of cob faced
with stone from the beach and
from nearby Garlick’s Quarry.
The white stone for the buttresses
and window frames came from
Ōtamahua Quail Island. Smaller
stones worn smooth from the
tides were carried up Church
Lane to the building site by local
women in their sacking aprons.
These were used as cobblestones
in the entrance porch.
Morey was assisted with
the timber work by Henry
Firmston, whose grave is
in the church cemetery.
Over the ensuing years the
church had a number of
additions – in 1874 a chancel
was added to the eastern end,
increasing the seating capacity
by 40. It included a magnificent
stained glass window depicting
the legend of St Cuthbert. Much
later, in 1980, a sturdy stone vestry
was built onto the south wall,
which survived the February 22,
2011 earthquake. Unfortunately,
the rest of the church was badly
damaged.
It was decided to deconstruct
the building (apart from the
vestry) and start again, with
new reinforced
concrete foundations
and
block walls.
The church was
carefully reconstructed
to look
as it did before
the earthquake. Due to the efforts
of tradespeople and the local
community, St Cuthberts stands
proud once again.
Despite everything nature has
thrown at it, a statement about St
Cuthberts from Bishop Harper at
the laying of the foundation stone
in 1860 has come to pass: “It
would remain a blessing to the
founders and their children’s
children and endure as long as
the everlasting hills by which it is
surrounded”.
But back to the hard-working
Morey. In 1862, he moved to
Okains Bay to build another Anglican
church there – St John the
Evangelist. The foundation stone
was laid on January 1, 1863 by
Elizabeth Torlesse, wife of Reverend
Henry Torlesse, who was the
driving force behind the project.
The walls were built using creek
boulders and locally quarried
stone and were supported by five
buttresses – a lesson perhaps
learned from St Cuthberts.
The buttresses and the Gothic
style window frames were made
of white stone from Ōtamahua
Quail Island. An interesting
design feature is the use of red
bricks in the door and window
arches, fired locally by the ever
enterprising Morey. The slate
roof was generously gifted by
Mr J.E Thacker – the slate and
the stained glass were the only
imported materials.
Wednesday February 7 2024 Bay Harbour News
TREASURES FROM THE PAST 19
HARD-WORKING:
Edward Morey built both
St Cuthbert’s Anglican
Church in Governors
Bay and St John the
Evangelist in Okains Bay
(below).
The actual build took just five
months and St Johns was ‘open
for business’ on June 30, 1863,
although the church was not
consecrated until February 12,
1882. The reason for this is not
clear as the main condition of
consecration, that of being debt
free, was fulfilled in 1863 thanks
to local contributions, liberal
donations by friends in England
and contributions from the Provincial
Government. The grand
total cost including fittings came
to £554, 9s and 8p (NZ$180,000).
St Johns was also badly damaged
in the earthquake, but as
with St Cuthberts, the community
and tradespeople came to the
rescue. They inserted metal rods
into the existing walls, repaired
and reset a lot of the original
stone, brick and slate, and replaced
the white stone framing
around the restored
east end stained glass
window with lighter
materials.
A nice touch
is the old stone
framing is laid out
as a landscaping
feature. Once again
a small community’s
dedication saved an
important historical
building for future
generations to enjoy.
