Family rush to raise funds for
Oscar’s life-changing surgery
• By Pierre Nixon
THE FAMILY of a young
man with a debilitating,
rare abdominal syndrome
is desperately fundraising
for a life-saving operation in
Germany.
Oscar Parker, once a thriving
musician, singer, and rep
hockey player at St Bede’s College
now faces a life-threatening
challenge.
Four years ago, his health
took a downturn, leaving him
with debilitating symptoms and
a mystery illness.
CHALLENGING:
Oscar Parker,
21, who has a
rare abdominal
syndrome, needs
surgery that isn’t
delivered in New
Zealand.
Fast forward to February
2024, 21-year-old Oscar finally
has answers – a confirmed diagnosis
of abdominal vascular
compression syndrome (AVCS),
an exceedingly rare disease,
especially in males.
Oscar was diagnosed with the
rare syndrome by Dusseldorfbased
vascular surgeon
Wilhelm Sandmann after his
family found a Facebook group
and connected with other
families going through similar
situations.
Disorder,
crime
in Brighton
keep
guardians
busy
• By Sasha Watson
NEW BRIGHTON’S security
patrol is dealing with 20-25
incidents a week, which include
supermarket thefts, alcohol
consumption and assaults.
But the guardians initiative
ends in March, prompting calls
for it to continue.
Guardian Anna Sparks said as
soon as the initiative started, the
guardians realised there was a
“desperate need” for a “security
presence” in the area.
“The community has expressed
to us a large increase in crime in
the area in the last two to three
years. We deal
with about 20-25
incidences per
week and get
one to two calls
from different
churches and
businesses asking
for our assistance
in de-escalating
various situations
Anna
Sparks
which have been reported to the
CCC.
“Staff had been experiencing
intimidation tactics from locals,
unstable and intoxicated persons
begging for money and doing
drug deals right outside front
doors.”
Donovan hopes to get
more funding for scheme
• From page 1
While Sparks said there is
still concern about the number
of incidents that occur, many
businesses and organisations in
the area have said they feel safer
overall having the guardians act
as a security measure.
“We have businesses, like
the op shop, which have
said incidences of theft have
decreased with the presence of
the guardians. We’ve also caught
about 10 people attempting theft
at the Countdown and recovered
about as many lots of stolen
goods,” she said.
Coastal Ward city councillor
Celeste Donovan said it was
hoped funding would be secured
to keep the guardian initiative
going after it is scheduled to end
in March.
The guardians began patrolling
again in October after an
eight year hiatus. They were
established after the February
22, 2011 earthquake to patrol
the New Brighton Mall area for
about three years.
Donovan said the feedback she
has received about the guardians
being back was “positive” and
several businesses appreciated
the extra point of contact and
support.
Sparks said the guardians
communicated with police who
backed them up when dealing
with serious incidents.
HAVE YOUR SAY:
Should the New
Brighton guardians
initiative continue after
March?
Send your response in
sasha.watson@
“Our team is persistent in
politely requesting that people
move from the area if they plan
to continue drinking, begging
or harassing businesses trying to
make a living,” said Sparks.
“The need for extra security
is still high in New Brighton.
The behaviours we see out here
are atrocious and it would be
a shame for the initiative to be
pulled, as if the guardians were
to go, the crap would start back
up again.
“We’ve seen a massive change
in the area with our presence
and I do hope it continues.”
The guardians wear hi-vis
uniforms to be easily identified
by the community and take
turns patrolling the area on foot.
Every registered business
in the area has been given the
guardians’ contact number and
can ask for assistance when they
are operating between Thursday-
Sunday from 11am-6pm.
Quake-damaged road littered with
potholes reopens after initial works
• By Sasha Watson
PART OF New Brighton Rd is
back to two lanes after work to
fix long-standing pothole and
flooding issues ended.
A section between Lake Terrace
Rd and the nearby pump
station has been raised by 800-
1000mm, resealed with chip seal,
as well as asphalt sealing at the
pump station entrance, and widened
by two and a half metres.
The work was needed because
a section of road by the pump
station slumped after three
culverts separated as a result
of the February 22, 2011
earthquake.
City council streets
maintenance manager Steve Guy
said the repair work had taken
a long time because it was not a
high priority.
“We know this became a longstanding
issue following the 2011
Canterbury earthquakes. At the
time, it had minimal impact and
was not a high priority . . . it’s
been great to get a permanent
solution being delivered.
“The culverts have been
functioning, but not to their full
capacity like before the quakes,
so the slump has meant water
Commonwealth Games
Exhibition at New Brighton
Museum ends this month
The 50th anniversary major exhibition
of the 1974 British Commonwealth Games
has been a resounding hit with local,
international, and countrywide travellers
visiting the New Brighton Museum.
Previously, the museum sent out a New
Zealand wide request looking for any and
all Games memorabilia to display in the
five week exhibition. This resulted in a
wide range of rare items from all over New
Zealand.
“We have some special treasures here,
a lot of it which we get to keep as they
have been donated permanently to the
museum. But that’s the role of the museum
is to collect this heritage stuff and actually
preserve it for the future. We’re proud of
what we have been able to achieve for the
people of Christchurch who have come to
see this event,” Museum president Wayne
Hawker said and shared there has been
huge interest in the exhibition as the Games
were a significant moment in Christchurch’s
history.
Volunteers at the New Brighton Museum
have painstakingly gathered hundreds of
items over the past four months to help
celebrate the city’s hosting of what was
known as the ‘Friendly Games’.
The comprehensive collection includes
old autograph books, event medals, and on
display during the weekends a rare Holden
Kingswood used by Games officials, in
addition to uniforms from the 1974 British
Commonwealth Games.
The British Commonwealth Games
exhibition runs through until mid-
February.
Plenty of room for all in modern Kona
THE EAGERLY anticipated
second-generation version of
Hyundai’s popular compact
Kona urban SUV is bigger,
bolder and more refined than its
predecessor.
All the usual effusive new
vehicle descriptors were rolled
out at the launch of this second
generation Kona four months
ago. Added to the mix are
claims it sets a new compact
SUV standard with its futuristic
design and economical Hybrid
variant that headlines with
a spacious, versatile cabin
featuring a clever ‘floating’
horizontal dash and standard
12.3-inch multimedia system.
In short, these all add up to
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
this model being vastly superior
across the board compared to its
predecessor. It addresses several
niggles people had with that, not
the least of these was a lack of
cabin and load space, and benign
styling, that had all the appeal of
an old woolly jumper. This is in
stark contrast to the sharp clean
and contemporary lines of its
successor.
While all new in most areas,
the status quo has been retained
under the bonnet – the engines
largely carry over from the
outgoing model, with an aging
2.0-litre petrol, plus 1.6 turbo,
and 1.6 Hybrid variants. The 1.6
AWD turbo receives a healthy
power upgrade from 123kW
Ratings out of 10: Performance 7; Handling 8; Build
Quality 8; Comfort 8; Passenger and Load Space 8; Styling
7; Value for money 6; Safety – Five Star ANCAP crash rating.
Average fuel consumption on road test, 4.7L/100km
Overall points out of 10: 8
to 146kW. For now though it
is a six model affair starting
at $42,990 for the entry level
2.0-litre petrol Active and
topping out at a lofty $65,990 for
the Limited N-Line being test
driven here.
In the engine compartment
the hybrid system is matched
to a naturally aspirated 1.6-litre
petrol engine with a battery
electric system. With 104kW and
265Nm of torque, flexibility is
the vehicle’s performance forte.
For the most part the test
vehicle is driven using the petrol
engine, with an electric motor –
powered by a 1.32kW/h battery
– chipping in with a handy
additional 32kW and 170Nm
as required. I was surprised at
how far the test vehicle would
run in electric mode in aroundtown
driving at speeds of up
to 50km/h without a helping
hand from the petrol motor.
Performance is less convincing
on steeper up hill grinds if
the vehicle is under load. Also
climbing at the same time is
engine noise. A smooth and
well-sorted 6-speed automatic
does everything that’s asked
of it across a range of different
driving situations.
There is plenty to enjoy
and room to do it thanks to a
noticeably larger cabin and more
voluminous rear cargo hatch.
Rear leg and headroom is vastly
superior. Second-row shoulder
room (1,402mm) is also among
the largest in its class.
All models feature alloy wheels
as standard, LED headlights and
taillights, and dual-zone climate
controlled air conditioning. Top
shelf variants such as the Limited
N-line have additional touches
such as an 8-speaker premium
audio system and power tailgate.
Latest in-car connectivity and
technology is expertly showcased
on a 10-inch touchscreen
multimedia system.
The underpinnings are
conventional with MacPherson
strut front suspension with
a multi-link rear end. In the
transition to this model, the
suspension has benefitted from
further refinements, such as
redesigned rear suspension
mounting bushes, and retuning
the springs for improved ride
comfort. On the downside, road
noise especially over coarse chip
seal is more intrusive than you
would expect from a premium
priced model.
