Building
industry
insiders
report
downturn
• By Chris Barclay
CHRISTCHURCH’S post-Covid
residential construction surge
has weakened with builders
now jostling for jobs on shakier
foundations.
Interest rate hikes have priced
would-be first home buyers out
of the market, with building
consents issued in the city dipping
significantly over the past 12
months.
Master Builders
Association Canterbury
branch
president John
Hamilton said
the industry was
in the midst of a
slump as members
diversify to
stay in business.
“The money
John
Hamilton
has pretty much dried up from
the banks because of high
inflation. That has a flow down
through to builders.
“The first things to go are the
new houses. High interest rates
means it’s unaffordable for first
home buyers.
“What we’re seeing is the
consent numbers are down on
new housing.”
A CHRISTCHURCH couple
have become the first to get
married at the popular arcade
Timezone.
Data scientist Dr Grace
Walker and butchery apprentice
Adam Brown officially tied the
knot at a private ceremony at the
Westfield Riccarton branch on
Monday.
They first met through a dating
app and bonded over their
love of gaming.
Swapping the aisle for the
bowling alley, they chose Timezone
as their wedding venue
because it was the site of their
first date.
“It’s our happy place, and we
go to Timezone often to relax
and for a short time forget about
all the adult stresses of life,”
Walker said.
“We come for regular date
nights because we are competitive
with each other, and we love
winning prizes. On an early
date, Adam won an owl from the
claw machine for me that I still
have. Ironically, I have an owl
tattoo on my arm because I have
always loved owls.”
STAFF AT Eastgate
Countdown did not shut down
salad.
The food safety body is looking
Woolworths supermarkets after
rats were spotted in two South
A video online showed a
mouse scurrying across a salad
in the deli section at the Eastgate
Countdown on Wednesday
last week.
Woolworths stores director
Jason Stockill said staff disposed
of the salad contaminated by the
mouse, but did not close the deli.
He accepted the supermarket
should have done more.
“It’s unacceptable what we
did as a store team, as a leadership
team as well,” he said.
“Our learning is we should
have disposed of more than
just the two bowls . . . and we’ll
review all our processes and
marketed as a wedding venue
but was supportive when approached
by the couple.
Anna Romano, marketing
director of Timezone’s parent
company TEEG, said: “We are
absolutely thrilled that Adam
and Grace have chosen to get
married at Timezone. It is a
privilege to be their designated
‘happy place’ where their occasions
have evolved from date
nights to celebrating their wedding.”
The wedding was officiated
by celebrant Louise Phillips and
attended by Romano and Lachland
Sollitt from Timezone, who
acted as witnesses.
As part of their celebrations,
the newlyweds took on each other
in a series of games including
the claw machine, bumper cars,
mini golf and social bowling.
They had a comic strip-themed
wedding cake topped with characters
Spock and Harley Quinn.
They are planning a trip to
Surfers Paradise in Australia
for their honeymoon, with
their chosen hotel within easy
walking distance of one of the
world’s largest Timezone sites.
Plumber seeks $65k for unpaid work
• From page 1
It is understood the
receiverships relate to work
carried out on the property. A
consent was issued in March
2021 to rebuild the garage, add
two bedrooms and an ensuite,
plus other alterations.
Peter Drennan from
Waterstone Insolvency said
although Ignite Solutions Ltd
was the sole appointer for the
receiverships, it was aware of a
number of other claims.
“It’s not appropriate for us to
comment on totals or numbers
at this stage,” he said, adding not
all creditors have claims against
both individuals.
The Ministry of Business,
Innovation & Employment’s
Insolvency and Trustee
Service confirmed Findlay was
previously adjudicated bankrupt
on December 14, 2017 and
discharged on January 30, 2021.
This followed the liquidation
of his project management firm,
Project 1 Design, in July that
year.
Christchurch plumber Darren
Maher was caught up in the
collapse of Project 1 Design,
and says he is still owed $65,000
for unpaid work carried out
at an apartment complex on
Manchester St in March 2017.
He is investigating whether he
can make a claim on proceeds
from the house sale.
“I’m speaking to my legal
team. It’s still a possibility,” he
said.
Maher
was among
unsecured
creditors owed
$611,333.20
according to
a liquidators’
Darren
Maher
report dated
February 2018.
“I was one of
the ones who
bankrupted him. I’ve been to
the police, it’s just complete and
utter burglary. He done me out
of $65,000 plus GST in a week.”
He said the work at six
apartments on Manchester St
was completed on April 3, 2017,
and three days later Findlay
had told him via a text message
a payment had been made, but
it did not appear in Gillon &
Maher Plumbing Ltd’s bank
account.
On April 17, 2017, Maher told
police he received an email from
Findlay saying that he (Findlay)
had not been paid “and for that
he was forced to take action”.
Concerned he would not get
paid, Maher planned to return
to the apartments and remove
the fixtures and fittings but this
JOB LOSS:
Plumber
Darren Maher
said he was
$65,000 out
of pocket
after not been
paid for work
done at this
apartment
complex on
Manchester St.
was not possible as the site was
handed back to the developers
on April 12, 2017.
“He sets up a company as a
project manager, gets everyone
in to do the work, gets paid and
then pockets the money or goes
bankrupt. That’s the way he
works,” Maher said.
Former signwriter Glenn Lily
said he was owed $25,000, an
amount he eventually wrote off.
“Long story short, he just
didn’t pay,” he said.
When contacted by The
Star, Findlay was surprised
to be reminded of the 2017
bankruptcy.
“If someone’s contacted you
I’m assuming they’re trying to
defame me, embarrass me or
cause some trigger effect of not
getting paid or something. This
could not be further from the
truth,” he said.
“When I was made bankrupt
I worked through that and
followed the letter of the law.”
Findlay, who described himself
as a sole trading individual
project manager, said he had not
worked for six months, a factor
leading to the family home being
sold.
“This is a sensitive situation for
us, we’re losing our family home.
The house is owned by my wife
so I’m not about to get a million
dollars. We’re getting nothing.”
The property listing said the
home underwent a full rewire
and extension, along with a new
roof in 2022.
Promoted as ‘redefining
contemporary family living’
within highly coveted school
zones, the property also features
private bespoke gardens, two
lounge spaces plus a single
bedroom/office and a yet to be
completed and carpeted internal
access double garage.
The outdoor space is equipped
with steps leading to Waimairi
Belt tightening for building industry
• From page 1
Mike
Blackburn, an
advisor to the
construction
industry who
produces a
monthly analysis
of building
consent trends
nationwide, said
Mike
Blackburn
the number of consents was in
decline.
There were 3508 consents issued
for residential dwellings in
Christchurch during 2023, a 23.5
per cent decrease on 2022.
The reduction in the Selwyn
district was more severe with
1154 dwellings consented in
2023, a 35.8 per cent drop on the
previous year.
Blackburn said the fall was not
unexpected and the diminished
activity was relative.
“It’s not like the arse has fallen
out of the market. What’s happened
is 2021 and 2022 were
absolute all-time record highs as
far as construction goes,” he said.
“I’ve been banging the drum
for 18 months now that building
consent numbers were going to
come back partly due to overbuilding
and economic effects.
“In January 2022, the phones
stopped ringing for most residential
builders in New Zealand
and the reason construction
numbers continued to climb is
because anything sold (in 2021),
you won’t be pouring concrete
for the foundations for at least
another 12 months.
“Whilst 2022 was still a relatively
good year, we didn’t really
start to see a decline in building
consent numbers until the beginning
of last year.”
Hamilton, who specialises in
renovations, noticed a decrease
in new build activity before
Christmas.
“There’s still work out there
but everyone’s scrapping over it.
It’s definitely a belt tightening
situation for everyone.
“We heard through the group
housing side of things that
people weren’t going into show
homes, it was just unaffordable
to build.
“We’ve really got to sort out
how to do it cheaper while still
maintaining quality.”
Hamilton urged the Government
to implement a predetermined
approach to safeguard the
industry during lean times.
“We’ve talked about it in depth
at (Master Builders) national
level . . . trying to co-ordinate
with government spending so
when there’s a quiet spell it’s an
easy transition to pick up infrastructural
type work, schools or
housing projects so you can plan
as a company,” he said.
Asked if he was aware of
any of the 360 members of his
branch involuntarily downing
tools, Hamilton said: “There’s
READY AND
WAITING:
sections await
construction in
a Christchurch
subdivision.
PHOTO: CHRIS
BARCLAY
definitely a little bit of pain going
on out there.
“Everyone is looking in rather
than out at the moment asking
themselves: How can we just get
through this?
Hamilton said builders were
often turning to his forte, renovations.
“It’s not that easy to pivot when
you’re set up for certain types
of building but you’ve seen guys
jumping into other areas and undercutting
other guys,” he said.
He noticed homeowners were
now more likely to work on their
existing property than start
afresh.
“If it gets busy it means people
aren’t buying new. They’ll do the
bathroom and kitchen because
they can’t build now.
“It’s huge money to build
just a basic home in Rolleston,
you’re getting close to a million
(dollars) now. That’s a lot for a
first home buyer who’s never
experienced a 9 per cent (interest
rate) before.”
Like Blackburn, Hamilton is
not surprised by the downturn,
and acknowledges it is part and
parcel of building in a fluctuating
economy.
“We’ve had Covid, supply
shortages, high interest rates. It’s
a game that’s always got something
trying to make you exit
early,” he said.
“When interest rates started
going up you didn’t need a crystal
ball to know what was going
to happen. Everyone is feeling it
. . . retailers, the available spend
has just gone out the window.”
Hamilton expected the tough
times to continue, predicting
interest rates would curb borrowing
for the foreseeable future.
“I don’t think they’ll move up
and down that much, maybe
one or two per cent so this is
going to be the new reality for
people over the next couple of
years. You’re not going to see 2-3
(per cent, interest rates) again for
a long time.”
Miss NZ says modern pageants
about more than ‘being pretty’
CURRENT MISS New Zealand
Georgia Waddington says the
role is about so much more than
just beauty, while also giving her
the chance to “learn so much
about yourself”.
Waddington was crowned
Miss New Zealand last year at
the age of 22.
Originally from Christchurch
and now living up north in Cambridge,
she went on to compete
in the Miss International pageant
in Japan in October, winning the
title of ‘Miss Photogenic International’.
Waddington had never competed
in a pageant before entering
Miss New Zealand, but has
come to love the role.
She said pageants these days
are about much more than
just beauty - it’s “beauty with a
purpose”.
“There is so much more involved
than just being pretty, a
lot of it is charity work, and what
you do for the community, and
environmental action, all those
things. So there is definitely a lot
more to it.”
She does ambassador work for
mental health charity I Am Hope
and sexual violence victims’
trust Brave.
Waddington remains active on
social media and says being Miss
NZ has been a full time job with
the charity work and pageant rehearsals,
especially when she was
preparing for the Japan event.
She says one of her main roles
has involved educating people
about how beauty pageants have
evolved “a lot”, with things like
bathing suit segments taking
place behind closed doors.
She says that the hard work
was worth it because “you learn
so much about yourself on the
journey”.
“You are forced to go out of
your comfort zone. So like public
speaking was something I’d
never done, but now I’m doing it
in front of thousands of students
at events, so it’s pretty cool what
you learn about yourself.
“I still feel like I’ve stayed true
to myself.”
But she still says one of the
hardest things was learning the
pageant walk.
“We need to walk in heels and
do a pageant strut.
“I thought I could very easily
walk in heels - which I can -
however walking in a pageant
walk is much different. It’s your
posture and the way your hips
move.”
Miss Canterbury finalist Paige
Sullivan also says pageants these
days hone in on things other
than beauty.
“I found out that half of the
score is made up of community
work, and I thought I was already
doing that anyway,” Sullivan
said.
At 22, Sullivan was one of the
youngest people in the world to
become a Rotary president. She’s
now hoping that experience will
help her win Miss Canterbury,
66 years after her grandmother
claimed the title.
“The reason why I entered
was that I found out my nana
(Dianna McFarlane) was Miss
Canterbury in 1958 . . . It is more
so focused on who you are as a
person, rather than, I guess probably
back in the 50s when nana
did it, what you looked like,”
Sullivan said.
Entering the pageant was “very
new to me and quite outside of
my comfort zone,” she said.
Sullivan is one of 14 finalists in
Miss Canterbury. She now lives
in Halswell but is still heavily
involved in the Rotary Club of
Lincoln. She is its immediate past
president (from June 2022 to July
last year).
“I joined the club when I was
18 and was involved in a number
of different leadership roles.
“I feel like I’ve been raised
by a lot of the older members
in our club, so they were all so
supportive when I took on the
(presidency).”
ALMOST A dozen offers were
made on a three-bedroom home
in Christchurch with first-home
buyers back and buying in some
of the city’s more affordable
suburbs.
Houses priced between
$500,000 and $700,000 are hitting
the sweet spot for first-home
buyers who, according to agents,
have more confidence in the
market and are trying to beat
any big price jumps.
A three-bedroom home, with
a sleepout on Hills Rd, in Mairehau,
had 100 groups through its
three weeks of open homes. An
impressive 11 contracts were presented
to the owner by the time
the deadline closed.
Ray White listing agent
Michael Stewart said it was the
most contracts he had ever presented
to a single vendor.
“Busy would be five offers so
that was very, very busy.”
Stewart said most of the offers,
and the highest ones, were from
first-home buyers looking for an
affordable home in a convenient
location.
While he could not disclose
the sale price until settlement,
he confirmed it was north of the
$600,000 RV.
The home ticked all the boxes
for first-home buyers, he said.
“A real Kiwi favourite is your
weatherboard bungalow with
some nice updates and a goodsized
section – that’s a first-home
buyer classic.”
Buyers also liked that the attached
sleepout could be used
for flatmates to help pay the
mortgage or extended family
members.
It had been recently renovated
complete with a modern kitchen.
Mairehau was proving popular
with this buyer type, he said,
because it offered the same
conveniences as neighbouring
St Albans but was much more
affordable.
A four-bedroom, onebathroom
home for sale at 232
Weston Road, in Mairehau, is
also getting a lot of attention
CONTRACTS GALORE: A three-bedroom bungalow on Hills
Rd in Mairehau had 11 offers presented within three weeks
of going on the market.
from first-home buyers. The
tender closes this week.
“Christchurch is quite cliquey,
like you can buy a street over
and it’s worth dramatically more
because of the suburb, which is
Christchurch for you. So Mairehau
is a step down in terms of affordability
– you can afford it so
much more – but it’s across the
road from a house that’s exactly
the same.”
Stewart believed the increased
interest from first-home buyers
was due to them believing that
interest rates had peaked and
were tipped to drop at some
point, which could push house
prices up again.
“It‘s that whole idea that everyone
is going ‘oh crap, prices are
going to go back up’.”
Stewart said near the $700,000
mark was at the higher end
of Christchurch’s first-home
market and buyers in that price
bracket were often getting help
from their parents.
How to stay on top
of your business IT!
IT security is becoming more and more important for
small and medium-sized businesses. The latest report
from CERT NZ (Computer Emergency Response Team
NZ) indicates that 2,136 incidents were reported, with
a direct financial loss of $4.7 million.
An internal IT department requires resources in the
form of staffing, equipment, software, or leadership
– which can be a huge financial expense. So, what do
you do if an internal IT department is not a feasible
option?
ITstuffed is a provider that takes care of your IT – they
act like an internal IT department but without the
internal, often unknown, overheads. They are based
in sunny New Brighton, and have been assisting,
advising on, coaching, and providing IT services to
businesses.
Daniel Lechner-Page, the managing director, shared
what he thinks makes for the success of ITstuffed:
“The 14th of February marked our 2-year anniversary
in our office spaces in New Brighton. I am quite proud
of what we have achieved in those last 2 years. Most
of our clients are based in Christchurch but we have
managed to gain clients from all over New Zealand.
We have certainly noticed the uptake in our services,
especially when it comes to managing and monitoring
security. The cost of an internal IT team makes sense
for large companies but most of our clients, with up to
50 users, definitely see a benefit from our approach
of providing our services directly to them. It reduces
their cost and risk.
With most of our clients we have a very close
relationship and make sure we have an in-depth catch
The team at ITstuffed New Brighton
up every few months. This allows us to stay on top of
any annoying issues. We also use those catchups to
make sure that all security measures are up to date.
Pricing is another point where we differentiate
ourselves from our competitors. Rather than an a la
carte approach, we offer a fixed fee per user pricing
model. It keeps budgeting for our clients simple
and we include all the required services, including
helpdesk and maintenance, that are normally charged
for separately.”
first-time buyers
A three-bedroom, one-bathroom
bungalow on Garvins Rd in
Hornby, has also attracted plenty
of first-home buyer interest.
Bayleys salesperson Angela Webb
said it was increasingly difficult
for first-home buyers to find a
house under $575,000 to make
the most of the government’s
First Home Grant scheme so
many were forfeiting it.
“There is becoming a short
supply of properties at that price
level. What we are seeing is
people are moving across suburbs
and buying in suburbs which
they previously wouldn’t have
done just to get something under
that price level.”
Along with Mairehau, suburbs
such as Woolston, Bromley and
Hornby were also popular firsthome
buyer suburbs, she said.
A renovated three-bedroom,
one-bathroom home at 37
Garvins Rd, in Hornby,had also
been a hit with first-home buyers
and has had 70 buyers through
its doors over its three-week
campaign.
Webb said there appeared to be
more confidence in the market
overall, but especially from firsthome
buyers.
Some investors are also starting
to return to the market by looking
at student rentals, blocks of
flats or new builds.
“They are not really competing
in that second-hand affordable
first-home buyer market.”
Harcourts salesperson Zani
Polson said first-home buyers
were looking at around the
$500,000 and $600,000 mark and
should not rule
out two-bedroom
homes with a
similar sized
footprint as a way
of getting on the
property ladder.
“It will be a
little more affordable
and there will
Zani Polson
be a little less competition and
they still have the opportunity to
add some value if they need to.
But equally if they are ok with a
two-bed and they don’t need an
office in a room then sometimes
a two-bed is just as sufficient.”
Polson said a lot of the firsthome
buyers were young couples
and, in most cases, they were
looking for standalone houses
preferably on freehold sections.
“Buyers are a lot more comfortable
and have a deposit and their
pre-approvals and want to buy
before house prices go up.”
She had also noticed an increase
in first-home buyers working
with mortgage brokers, which
she believed was a good move.
THE ELDERLY owner of a
classic 1950s Christchurch home
hugged her agent and was in
to tears when her home of 30
years sold for an impressive $1.1
million as buyers fought over it.
The 93-year-old had already
moved into a retirement village
and was sitting in the front row
at last Thursday’s auction watching
four buyers tussle over her
Wai-Iti Tce home, in Fendalton.
It drew huge interest during
its first weekend of open homes
with more than 41 groups
traipsing through its doors leaving
rows of shoes at the front
door.
By the end of the three-week
campaign more than 70 people
had shown up to its open
homes.
The auction for the threebedroom,
one-bathroom home
opened at $800,000 and rose in
$25,000 bids until it hit $1.025m
when it was announced on the
market.
Two bidders then dropped
out of the race, but another took
their place making smaller bids
of between $5000 and $10,000.
But it was the couple in their
60s that had been part of the
auction the whole way making
one of the first bids and also the
final bid. They were downsizing
and planned to move in and
renovate.
Harcourts listing agent Mark
O’Loughlin said the 93-year-old
owner had been sitting beside
him during the auction and was
“ecstatic”. The sale price was
significantly above its RV of
$950,000.
“She was in the room sitting
in the front crying, she just
couldn’t believe it.”
“She was just cuddling me,
be removed in three to six weeks
to reveal a multi-million dollar
project funded by the city council
Ratepayers initially
contributed $10 million to
The trust also has to carry
out significant ongoing annual
maintenance for the building,
which served as the headquarters
Designed by Samuel Hurst
is the first Queen Anne-style
Memorial Ave
We’re replacing old underground pipes on Memorial
Avenue between Ilam Road and Roydvale Avenue.
To do this work quickly we need to reduce Memorial Avenue to one lane
in both directions around our work sites. Expect delays at peak times.
We’re also working in the area upgrading roads, including the Nor’West
Arc cycleway, between Memorial Avenue and Ilam Fields. There will be
lane closures around our worksite. Detours will be in place.
We know roadworks are disruptive for you, so our contractors are
working on these projects at the same time so we can get out of your
Mother angry over
MARY
Ryman Resident
use of prop dead
babies in protest
• By Dylan Smits
A MOTHER is angry at protesters after
her children saw prop dead babies at the
pro-Palestine demonstration from their
Lyttelton home.
Protesters created bundles to act as dead
babies, representing those killed in Gaza
since the beginning of the recent Israel-
Hamas War.
Kylie Guest said it was difficult for her
young children to discern the bundles
were props.
“My 9 and 10-year-old could see them
lined up all along the footpath and of
course when you’re that small, not only are
they just bodies, but they looked like bodies
of (actual) babies,” said Guest.
About 60 protesters demonstrated on
the corner of Dublin St and Norwich Quay
from noon to 2.30pm on Waitangi Day.
Some demonstrators blocked the road
before being dispersed by police.
Guest’s lounge, bathroom and children’s
bedroom window overlooked the protest.
“There was really no avoiding it.”
She said her 10-year-old daughter was in
great distress, especially when protesters
started blocking the road.
Guest does not want to be
misunderstood as anti-Palestinian.
“It’s not that I don’t support their cause.
I absolutely respect their right to protest, I
just was really, really upset in the manner
that it was carried out.”
Guest would have liked some advanced
warning about the demonstration.
“I could have put steps in place to stop
my children from being exposed to things
like that.”
She found the use of red paint and the
prop dead babies offensive.
“It’s not a 9 and 10-year-old’s responsibility
to carry the weight of the world on
their shoulders.”
Protest organiser Ihorangi Reweti-Peters
said the use of the props and road blocking
was justified to spread awareness of child
deaths in the Israel-Hamas war.
“I stand by civil disobedience. Our Government
still hasn’t called for a ceasefire.”
He said the prop dead babies were used
to represent the children killed in Gaza by
Israel.
Use of the props will likely continue at
future protests in Lyttelton and elsewhere,
as he views it as an important tool to
spread the protest message.
“What I don’t agree with is the pepper
spray and the police brutality towards
CONFRONTING: Protestors created
Israel-Hamas War. PHOTOS: RNZ
peaceful protesters who were standing on
the footpath,’ said Reweti-Peters.
Guest rebukes the idea the protest was
fully peaceful.
“That’s flat out wrong,” she said. “The
protesters were hitting police officers with
their signs and being dragged off the road.”
Police said they were aware of the use of
the props.
“While we appreciate some people may
have found the items confronting, our
primary concern was any behaviour that
put those involved, the public and our staff
at risk.”
Police said pepper spray was used because
“a handful of people failed to comply
with police requests to move and following
a number of warnings, staff utilised tactical
options available”.
A spokesperson said four men at the
protest were taken into custody and
charged with obstructing a public place,
resisting police and assaulting police.
Two of the men, political activists John
Minto and Paul Hopkinson, appeared in
the district court on Monday.
Their next appearance is April 22.
The men were among those pepper
sprayed and have now laid a complaint
with the Independent Police Conduct
Authority.
Chch airport
stops saying
it is ‘climate
positive’
• By Eloise Gibson
CHRISTCHURCH Airport has
stopped using the phrase “climate
positive” in its marketing, even
though it still maintains the
phrase is “factually accurate”.
The claim was made on the
back of carbon offsets the airport
had purchased, which it says more
than compensate for the planetheating
gases from the airport’s
operations.
But a complaint to the Advertising
Standards Authority said this
was misleading because the tally
did not include carbon emissions
from flights in and out of the airport,
which make up more than
90 percent of the airport’s total
climate impact.
The complaint was settled when
the airport told the ASA it had
stopped using the phrase “climate
positive” since late 2023.
However, the airport denied
the phrase was wrong, saying an
independent certifier had backed
up its claim that climate projects
the airport paid for had offset
120 per cent of its “controllable”
emissions (not including flights
by airlines enabled by using its
airport).
Restoration under way for surf club’s
The catchphrase ‘Old
soldiers never die, they
just fade away’ applies
at the Taylors Mistake
Surf Life Saving Club,
where a war memorial
cairn is being restored
after being exposed
to the elements. Chris
Barclay reports
AGE SHALL not weary them,
but Taylors Mistake Surf
Lifesaving Club members who
made the ultimate sacrifice have
been worn down by sea, salt air,
sand and sun.
Seven names
of the fallen
from World War
1 on a memorial
cairn and sun
dial outside the
clubhouse have
dimmed due
to a century of
exposure to the
Simon
Strombom
elements, prompting a charity
dedicated to restoring war graves
to undertake a renovation project
last month.
It was well-timed considering
the club’s World War 2 casualties,
added after the 1939-45
conflict, suffered the same fate
over time, with those six names
barely legible at the popular
surfing location between Sumner
and Lyttelton.
New Zealand Remembrance
Army chief executive Simon
Strombom noticed the memorial,
designed by then club
patron Alfred Patterson Osborn
and unveiled in February 1925,
needed attention when he attended
a wedding reception at
the clubhouse last year.
“I looked at it and thought we
needed to do it because it wasn’t
going to last,” Strombom said.
The Remembrance Army
organised the removal of two
weather-beaten brass plaques
thanks to a $3500 grant from
Veterans’ Affairs New Zealand.
The plaques
will be replaced
by a record of
the names in
mounted inside the clubhouse.
Club patron and life member
Jim Turpin, 82, was delighted
the restoration work was under
way given the cairn is the club’s
oldest fixture.
The original clubrooms, built
in 1916, burnt down in 1952
destroying historical records,
including details of the war dead.
“It’s the only part of the old club
we’ve got left. It’s very important,
so it’s wonderful to see it be restored.
I grew up in the time when
they were all heroes,” said Turpin,
who joined the club in 1955.
“We used to lean on it when
we were patrolling. Guys would
loiter around it, look out to sea,
put a transistor radio on it and
listen to the cricket.”
The memorial has already
undergone one restoration after
it collapsed into raging seas after
a storm and high spring tides
combined to weaken the rock
and concrete terrace in 1978.
Restoration also led to revision
with a discrepancy detected with
the original, namely the incorrect
spelling of Gustave Vincent
Petersen as Peterson.
He enlisted in October 1915
and was killed in action on the
Somme on September 15, 1916,
Old Boys rue missed opportunities
• By Sam Coughlan
OLD BOYS Collegians will look
to win the key moments during
Saturday’s clash with St Albans
in the two-day competition.
Old Boys lost their final
match of the 50-over one-day
league against Burnside West
Uni last weekend to miss out
on the semi-finals of that
competition, just a year after
winning the whole thing. Their
focus now turns to the twoday
competition, where Old
Boys are fifth – but only the
equivalent of one win behind
leaders Burnside.
Old Boys captain Jack Lewis
said they have struggled to
string results together in recent
games.
“I think we’ve just been a
bit unlucky here and there, we
haven’t really put together a
solid team performance for the
last few weeks,” he said
“We always want to win
games, get a few young guys
some opportunities in prems
and look to build for next
season and finish on a high.
“It’s really just about sorting
out a couple deficiencies we’ve
had with the bat and maybe
sticking to a plan a bit longer
GUTTED: Old Boys Collegians players walk off the field after
their loss to Burnside West Uni that cost them a place in
with the ball and really nailing
those down.”
Lewis said it was
“disappointing” to miss out on
the finals in the one-dayers.
We wanted to obviously have
a chance to defend our title in
the finals, but to not even make
it to a semi was a tough pill to
swallow,” he said.
“But at the end of the day, we
just weren’t good enough, so we
didn’t deserve to be there.”
With three games to go
across six weeks in the two-day
competition, Burnside lead the
way on 75.8 points, followed
by Lancaster Park (62.8) and
Heathcote (61.1).
Old Boys face winless St
Albans on Saturday and will be
looking to force their way up
the table, while Burnside play
Lancaster Park in a top of the
table clash at St Albans Park.
Heathcote travel to play
fourth-placed Sydenham while
East Shirley host Merivale-
Papanui – who are also winless.
In the women’s one-day
competition, North West and
Sydenham are set to vie for a
spot in the final in the last few
weeks of the season.
With five rounds remaining,
the two teams sit in second and
third, both on 38 points, well
behind leaders Lancaster Park
on 53, while Old Boys prop up
the table on 23 points.
The top two women’s teams
play in the final at the end of the
season. The competition was
won by Lancaster Park last year.
North West beat Sydenham by
seven wickets at the weekend to
draw level with them on points
but move ahead thanks to a
superior net run-rate.
On Saturday, North West
host Lancaster Park at Burnside
Park while Sydenham travel to
Elmwood Park to take on Old
Boys.
All-rounder heads off on
international rep duties
• By Sam Coughlan
SYDENHAM all-rounder
Raunaq Kapur made a short trip
home to represent his native
Hong Kong.
The 20-year-old played three
matches against Malaysia and
Hong Kong A in a series that
served as preparation for a busy
year that includes Asia Cup and
T20 World Cup qualifiers.
Kapur took a wicket in each
game he played but saw limited
opportunity with the bat down
the order, scoring five in his only
innings against Malaysia.
He has previously played for
Hong Kong’s U19 side in 2019
and played twice for their senior
team as a 15-year-old in the same
year.
Kapur then moved to
Christchurch to pursue cricketing
opportunities – alongside now-
Sydenham teammate Aarush
Bhagwat and Lancaster Park’s
Kalhan Marc Challu. He has
since represented Canterbury’s
U19 and A sides and flew
home early from his Hong
Kong commitments to play for
Canterbury A against Auckland.
Returning players sign on for Coastal
• By Sam Coughlan
COASTAL SPIRIT have locked
up four key players ahead of the
Southern League season.
Winger Liam Cotter, who
top-scored for Coastal last year
with eight goals, joined captain
Dominic McGarr, goalkeeper Ellis
Hare-Reid and midfielder Joe
Hoole in staying with the club in
2024.
Head coach Robbie Stanton
said it was important to have
them confirmed.
“They were the core of last
year’s team, and that stability
is going to be vital for us going
forward this year.”
Coastal finished last season in
third place - the best team aside
from regular Southern League
table-toppers Christchurch
United and Cashmere Technical.
The top two teams at the end
of the Southern League season,
encompassing teams from the
South Island, qualify for the
National League against the best
from across the country.
After missing out last year,
Stanton wants Coastal to be
pushing for that level in 2024.
“In all honesty, our goal this
year is to play National League
and that’s what we’re gearing
ourselves up to do,” he said.
“The quality of players we’re
bringing in probably makes that
statement in itself, the majority
of them have played National
League, or the equivalent of.”
Stanton said Coastal have acquired
Cashmere Tech’s captain
Andrew Storer and Christchurch
United midfielder Mason Stearn
– both of whom featured in last
season’s National League.
The Ferrymead Bays duo of
Alex Macleam and Ryan Stanley
have also joined Coastal for the
season.
Stanton said the team’s preseason
has been ‘disjointed’ so
far, but the team should improve
quickly.
“A lot of players are coming in
from out of town, so that’s made
a little bit of a soft start.
“But pretty much from this
week onwards, everyone’s in
town, we’re getting them all into
Christchurch and getting them
bedded down into the training
regime.”
He said the core group from
last year would be important in
integrating the new players.
“Them seeing the platform that
we had last year, in terms of the
commitment the players are giving
to what we’re doing, will be
huge this year.
“The squad is really excited,
and the club is backing us with
everything we need off the pitch
to try and make that work.”
Stanton said some key preseason
friendlies are already
confirmed to help the team gel
together.
“We’ve got pre-season games
against Burwood, Christchurch
United and Nomads already
booked in, and a couple other
ones that are tentatively booked
in at the moment.”
Coastal Spirit’s Southern
League season will kick off on
March 30.
Top teams eyeing spots in semi-finals
BISHOPDALE AND Burnside
Park’s men’s teams have hit
form at the business end of
the premier tennis interclub
competition with both setting
their sights on next month’s
semi-final play-offs.
Burnside Park will play
competition leaders Cashmere
at Cashmere on Saturday while
Bishopdale will be on their home
courts against Elmwood.
Bishopdale last week thumped
Edgeware Waimairi, scoring
maximum points by winning all
matches. Their top player, Will
Schneideman was impressive in
his strong win over Edgeware
Waimairi’s Paddy Ou, a highly
ranked and rated player from
Otago.
Captain Grayson Cullen,
who played college tennis in the
United States, says his team will
go into this week’s match with
their strongest lineup including
fellow college graduates, Schneideman
and Maddison Aubrey,
club coach Gareth Robb and
James Wilson.
Elmwood’s match against
Cashmere last weekend was
rained out after a southerly
storm. Cashmere had won all
three completed matches, including
two long doubles clashes
which featured Elmwood’s
Alistair Hunt, former New
Zealand Davis Cup player, whose
singles against Cashmere’s James
Meredith was abandoned.
Cashmere, the first-round
winners, are making easy work
of the competition with the
team a mix of highly ranked
experienced players and talented
young players, Lucas Evans and
Liam Barrett. There will be some
interesting match-ups against
WINNER: Bishopdale’s Will
Schneideman was impressive
in his win over Edgeware
Waimairi’s Paddy Ou.
Points
Shirley 7.
Burnside Park which includes EJ
Gonzaga who won this week’s
Canterbury Secondary Schools
championship at Wilding Park,
beating Evans in a three-set
thriller.
Burnside Park only lost just
the one match in its game last
weekend against Te Kura Hagley,
with its top player Ben Smith defeating
Burnside’s Finn Emslie-
Robson in three sets.
Te Kura Hagley this week
plays Edgeware Waimairi which
is missing its number one, Nic
Jenkins due to injury.
In the women’s competition
Elmwood continues its
domination with its team led
by Abbey Mason and Louise
Oxnevad in the top singles
slots being too strong for the
opposition. One of its lower
order players, Holly-Jayne Feutz
is also in form winning the
Canterbury Secondary Schools
championship for her school,
Ashburton College, earlier this
week. Elmwood plays Cashmere
on Saturday. Elmwood was too
strong for Waimairi last week
but full marks to Waimairi’s
Sophie Ensor who had a straight
sets win over her higher ranked
Elmwood opponent. Waimairi
this week plays Shirley who
defaulted last week to Bishopdale
who jumped up the table by
taking maximum points.
Bishopdale’ this week plays Te
Kura Hagley whose match last
week against Cashmere was
abandoned due to rain when
they were leading 2-1 with the
teams sharing remaining points.
Boys’ High pair knock over senior rivals
• By Sam Coughlan
TWO CHRISTCHURCH Boys’
High students have blown away
their senior competition at
the Canterbury track and field
athletics championships.
Shot putter James Moore and
discus thrower Finn McLeod,
both 17, won their respective
events competing against some
men who were far older.
Moore threw 14.59m in the
shot put – more than a metre
clear of second-placed Max Abbot
– and his worst throw was
better than Abbot’s best.
McLeod took out the discus
with a best effort of 47.07m from
his second attempt.
Boys’ High head of athletics
Mike Drury said the achievement
is a special moment for the
pair.
“I think it’s really significant.
I’m certainly not aware of young
men over the years having success
in these events going up age
groups.”
Drury said the pair had only
decided last week to compete in
the senior competition.
“Even though they’re only 17,
they both thought they’d have
a go at the senior shot put and
discus titles.
“And tied in with that, it
means that you’re throwing
CHAMPIONS: Finn McLeod (left) and James Moore
representing New Zealand secondary schools at the
Capital Classic in Wellington. PHOTOS: MIKE DRURY
a much heavier implement as
well.”
McLeod only had his first ever
throw with the 2kg senior discus,
up from 1.75kg for age-group
competitions, three days before
the event.
“Finn’s coach said to him:
‘Okay, why don’t you have a go
at throwing the 2kg discus in
the Canterbury champs this
weekend’.
“So he got it out, had two
throws, and that was his preparation
for that event.”
The pair have signed up to
compete in the International
Track Meet next Saturday – the
biggest event on the athletics
calendar in the South Island,
featuring a number of overseas
representatives.
Drury hopes the boys make
the cut for the prestigious competition.
“I read the other day that
WIND-UP: McLeod begins
his action to throw the
discus.
there’s athletes from 20 different
countries competing, and a total
of 80 international athletes that
are going to be competing on
that day,” he said.
“So it’s a really cool event, and
the quality of competition will be
unreal.
“At this stage, both boys are
hoping that they will make the
fields for those, but it will come
down to how many international
athletes are coming over and
happen to be in their events.”
McLeod could have the chance
to compete against 2022 Commonwealth
Games medallists
Matt Denny (Australia) and
Lawrence Okoye (Great Britain)
in the discus.
Moore will face off with his
coach Nick Palmer, ranked
second in the country, and fourtime
Canadian champion Mark
Bujnowski.
POWER: Moore loads up to
throw the shot put during
an event at Ngā Puna Wai.
If they qualify, Drury thinks
they’ll be competitive.
“Finn is actually ranked fourth
in New Zealand right now for
discus, and James is fifth in shot
put.
“So that puts it into perspective
about how well they are actually
achieving.”
But it’s not just athletics
where the pair put in the hard
yards.
“These two guys, they’re
involved in a lot of stuff – both of
them are still prefects this year,”
Drury said.
“They’re also both in the 1st
XV this year, our head coach has
been really obliging in terms of
encouraging them to carry on
with their athletics.
“Everyone at the school is
immensely proud of them.”
It comes after two deaths during
race days in Christchurch in
recent weeks.
Since the racing season began
in August, animal organisation
SAFE said there have been
5051 injuries, 65 fractures and
six deaths.
However, the industry said
this was well down on prior
years due to it implementing an
Injury reduction strategy.
SAFE Head of investigations
Will Appelbe told Checkpoint
the recent deaths were
“horrific”.
One of the dogs was 4-yearsold
and suffered two broken
legs while racing and had to be
euthanised.
The other dog was just 2 and
had to be euthanised after suffering
from an open fracture, he
said.
Appelbe said they were just
two within a wider context,
which showed dogs experienced
“extreme suffering” in the racing
industry.
“The dogs do continue to suffer,
do experience an extreme lot
of suffering and it’s been allowed
to continue for far too long.
In the last racing season, 40
percent of greyhounds that raced
suffered an injury ... that’s a feature
of an industry that multiple
reviews have said is inherently
dangerous.”
Appelbe said it had been an issue
for far too long and three reviews
had been published since
2013, all identifying “significant
animal welfare concerns” that
continued to persist.
While campaigning for the
election in 2023, now Prime
Minister Christopher Luxon
said greyhound racing should be
banned.
But it was not good enough
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
Call to ban greyhound racing
no timeline had been put on an
action that was the only way to
protect the greyhounds, Appelbe
said.
The previous Labour government
should have moved to
ban it sooner, but there was an
opportunity for Luxon to put his
words into action and “protect
these greyhounds from further
harm”.
Dogs were suffering and it was
not good enough, Appelbe said.
In a statement to Checkpoint,
Greyhound Racing New
Zealand said it was saddened
and disappointed by the euthanasia
of the two greyhounds.
It said euthanasia was considered
by an independent veterinarian
to be the most humane
option.
It said the rate of race day euthanasia
had reduced drastically,
going from 67 in the 2018/19
racing season to seven in each of
the past two seasons.
Greyhound Racing New
Zealand said this was due to
animal welfare measures it
had recently put in place.
MILESTONE FOR NICHOLLS
Canterbury batter Henry
Nicholls passed 5000 List A runs
against Central Districts on
Wednesday. Nicholls went into
the game one run short of the
milestone and took 10 balls to get
off the mark against the Stags but
converted his milestone innings
into his eighth List A century.
MASTERS EVENT IN TOWN
Ngā Puna Wai is hosting the
New Zealand Masters track and
field championships, held in
Christchurch for the first time in
14 years. The event is expected
to attract over 220 athletes from
ages 30-95 from Friday to Sunday
and is open to all members of a
local Masters athletes centre, and
Athletics New Zealand members.
Athletics Canterbury is inviting
people to come and watch.
REGION ALONE AGAIN
Canterbury Rugby League has
returned to standalone district
status after previously being
aligned with Southern Zone. The
change means Canterbury can
field their own team at youth
tournaments – where previously
local players would represent the
South Island Scorpions. The Bulls
were aligned with Southern Zone
from 2009 onwards when NZRL
switched to a countrywide zonal
structure.
weeK Seven: The ease of running
The training programme you have followed has
allowed for a gradual increase in fitness. Generally
you should cope comfortably with the increase
in mileage and intensity. If you are struggling it
can be because of an inefficient or poor running
technique. The best way to run is with an upright
body position. That might sound self-evident
but it is not infrequent that I see people running
stooped forwards or leaning back too far. You
achieve an upright body position by pushing your
pelvis and chest slightly forward with your neck
and head nicely aligned with your spine. Keep
your stride short so you land under your body
rather than ahead of it. Over striding is the most
common mistake made by runners of all levels.
To prevent over striding keep your stride short
and try and land on your mid-foot rather than
on your heel. Once you start running you can
introduce a slight “total body” forward lean (so
not just the upper torso). This body position will
give you the added benefit of a gentle forward
pull by the forces of gravity. In a previous article
I mentioned the importance of rhythm and that
is easier achieved with a shorter stride. Stay low
to the ground to minimise the forces of impact.
Have your arms relaxed; bend elbows with hands
moving up and down in front of your chest
dictating the rhythm of your legs.
To achieve this goal you
need to develop some
awareness around the
basic requirements of
exercising for health and
fitness. First and foremost
this has to do with 3 key
principles:
1. How often do you train?
To improve your level of health and
fitness you will need to aim for 4 sessions
per week. 2 or 3 sessions per week will only
maintain what you have and 1 session per
week is definitely not sufficient.
2. How long are your sessions? The duration
of your sessions will generally build towards
between 30 and 50 minutes with one longer
session of 60-120 minutes.
3. What is the right intensity to train at? The
good thing about the programme is that all
your runs will be done at submaximal pace,
also called conversation pace. That means a
pace where you can still talk. If you can’t talk
you are going too fast and you are likely to
come to a grinding halt sooner or later.
This programme and accompanying information are written
as a guide only. If you are concerned about your health at
any stage please undergo a health check with your GP.
TIP oF The weeK
If you are hoping to achieve some weight
loss as part of your programme this is the
time that you should see a shift in your
weight. One of the tricky things regarding
weight loss through exercise is that any
loss of fat can be offset by an increase in
muscle bulk. As muscle tissue is heavier
than fat a net gain in weight can be the
result in the short term for some people.
So if you have not lost weight and you have
kept to a healthy diet, don’t despair as this
might be the main reason. Your own unique
response to your exercise regime will decide
when you will start to lose weight and how
much you will lose. The good news is that
the health benefits from a regular exercise
programme are still the same, regardless of
the amount of weight you lose (or not).
and improved landscaping.
Said the city council’s planning
and delivery transport
manager Jacob Bradbury: “We’re
aiming to make this section
of Stanmore Rd more peoplefriendly
and pleasant for those
who visi the shops and amenities
in the area.
“We’re also focusing on improving
safety for pedestrians
and road users with new bus
stops and bus parking bays, safe
speed platforms a the roundabouts,
footpath resurfacing and
FAERIE FUN: The Christchurch Faerie Circle face painting was a popular attraction
at the 13th annual I Love Brighton festival.
• By Geoff Sloan
AN ESTIMATED crowd of
up to 15,000 descended on
Thomson Park for the 13th
annual ‘I Love Brighton’
festival.
“This is a family
friendly even that we
put on every year with
activities for children, a
little market area, we’ve got
entertainment happening.
offerings, keen to recruit new
members by running games
and activities.
The event began after the
Christchurch earthquakes as
pedestrians will still be able to
access businesses in the area.
“We’ll need to install temporary
stop-go traffic lights while
we complete this work, with a
one-way system in place between
Worcester St and Hereford St for
BIG TURNOUT: An estimated
Event co-organiser Martha
Baxendell said the free festival
was a great way to star the
year.
I mean, just a fun day for
everyone.”
Community groups
and sports clubs took the
