Dancer stepping up

Dancing Championships in
Glasgow, Scotland, in late
March.
Luke has been training four
times a week with his instructors,

Argene Flack, at the Southern
Cross Irish Dance School’s new
facility in Phillipstown. He
will go to the championships
alongside fellow dance student
Cameron Murray, 11.
It will be the Hillmorton
High School year 11 student’s
second time competing at the
world championships, having
competed in Montreal, Canada
last year.

Festival-goers show their love

annual ‘I Love Brighton’ festival.

happening. I mean, just a
fun day for everyone.”

THE CITY council’s Fendalton
service centre is set to become a
one-stop shop for people to post
letters and pay bills.
From today, the service centre
will be upgrading to NZ PostPlus,
offering a range of new services.
These include bill payments,
IRD applications, Kiwi Access
applications and New Zealand
Transport Agency Waka Kotahi
services – in addition to the usual
posting of letters and parcels.
“We started providing postal
services at the Fendalton Service
Centre back in 2016 in response
to the community’s needs,” said
city council head of citizen and
customer services Sarah Numan.
“Since then, we have included
PostPlus services at our Papanui,
Riccarton, Linwood and Shirley
service centres, and we’ve had
great community feedback from
these.
“With these additional services,
our Fendalton centre will be a
convenient one-stop shop where
residents can access council
customer services, send letters
and parcels, and now also pay
bills.”
The Fendalton Service Centre
is located at 4 Jeffreys Rd,
Fendalton. It is open Monday to
Friday 9am-5pm.

top 50 per cent would be awesome,”
said the 15-year-old, who
is from Hoon Hay.

from the competition, staying in
accommodation and the cost of
airfares will be expensive – upwards
of $15,000.
Luke’s mother Kendra Street
said: “If anyone is keen to donate
and help, that would be amazing.
We have already paid for entry
into the competition, our airfares
are on the credit card and we are
awaiting the council’s response to
Luke’s Youth Development funding
application.
“With every . . . donation, yours
or your business name will be
printed onto an ‘I have your back’
t-shirt, which Luke will wear out
and about to say thank you to his
supporters and sponsors.”
Luke qualified at the 2023 New
Zealand Irish Dancing national
championships, held at Burnside
High School, having won all
three of his dances for the overall
title and gaining a perfect score of
300 in the U15s age group.
He has been dancing for about
five years at the Southern Cross
Irish Dance School and has
competed regularly for about
two years. Said Street: “We first
went to a boys-only class before
he joined. Luke thought this was
quite a unique and fun dance and
he had rhythm and could learn
the steps. He loves it, when he
first started, he would just keep
dancing all the time.’’
Luke will be competing in
the soft-shoe and hard-shoe
15-16-year-old boys categories at
the championship, where, if he
places in the top 50 per per cent,
he will then be eligible to compete
in the set dance category.

dance out of 100 points in aspects
including rhythm and musicality,

SURFable sessions
an annual highlight

the water on Sunday with members of the
Sumner Longboarders club for a special
lesson.
They were taking part in the SURFable
sessions at Christchurch’s Scarborough
Beach to help teach 48 disabled swimmers
to surf the waves.
Despite wet and cold weather, the
novice surfers relished the opportunity.
They quickly got to grips with the new
skills with their tutors while working
around their disabilities, which ranged
from blindness to Down syndrome and
cerebral palsy.
Event co-ordinator Pete Mannix said
the annual SURFable sessions wouldn’t
happen without help from an army of
volunteers who give up their day to make
it a special event for the surfers and their
families.
“It’s probably the one opportunity a year
that some of these guys get the opportunity
to get into the surf experience getting
onto a surfboard.
“Whether it’s standing up, sitting down,
lying down, doesn’t really matter.”
The Sumner Longboarders club is
celebrating 10 years of running the free
surfing lessons.
Over that time, the members introduced
around 400 disabled surfers to the sport.
“(There’s) a lot involved in the setting
up and the planning and the organisation
and it all comes together and then the first
session of the day, we’re standing up here
on the shore and you hear the hoots in the
hollers and the laughter and the yahoos
and you think: ‘Oh, all right, we’re under
way’.
“And everyone gets a big grin on their
face and that lasts all day.”
Mannix says the event is fully booked
each year, with more interest than the
50-member club can accommodate.
“We’re doing a big review after this
to look at sustainability and how do we
expand it.
“It’s a bit tricky in Christchurch, the surf
season. The warm weather and the warm
water doesn’t last very long, so that’s why
we try and put all the effort into the one
big event.”

Merv and Anji say goodbye
after 29 years of service

THE HEI Hei and Hornby
communities have said goodbye
to well-known dairy owners,
Balvant “Merv” Ravji and his
wife, Anjana.
After nearly three decades, the
couple has sold the shop. They
finished up on Sunday.
Said Ravji: “We just need a
break. It was an (open) seven-day
business, which we have been
running for 29 years. We’re not
retiring, but want to enjoy our
time and life while we still can.
“We would like to humbly
thank the whole community for
their understanding . . . there has
been an outpour of people who
have thanked us and wished us
well. We have been so welcomed
by everyone throughout the
years. We cannot thank them
enough.”
More than 200 well-wishers
have bid the couple farewell
online and in person.
Said Greater Hornby Residents
Association chair Derek Phelps:
“Being the people they are, Merv
and Anji wanted to keep it quiet,
but we could not let them get
away with that.
“They are a fantastic couple
who always give the most
outstanding service and will
be greatly missed. Merv has
advised the new owners have had
experience running a similar
operation.”
One well-wisher on Facebook
mentioned their father, who was
in a wheelchair, being greeted by
Ravji at the door, so the owner
could collect necessary items and
take them back out to his father,
which made life a bit easier.

News she wished the couple “the
very best for their next journey”.

go under the radar – but I told

“Most businesses around
here have changed owners
over the last few years, but not
the dairy. They become a part
of the community’s daily life,
taking an interest with everyone,
supporting those who need it day
and night,” she said.
“During Covid-19 and
throughout the restrictions,
Merv had set himself up with a
box outside the shop with bits
and bobs. He continued to serve
Hei Hei in any way he could.”
Cycleway
delayed

THE LATEST stage of
construction of the South Express
Cycleway on Waterloo Rd from
Halswell Junction Rd to Fulham
St has been halted.
Work began in January and
was due to finish in early March.
It has been delayed due to an
unexpected design clash with an
underground power cable.
Said city council transport
planning and delivery manager
Jacob Bradbury: “Due to an unexpected
design clash with buried
underground services, work has
temporarily ceased on Waterloo
Rd while a solution is found. Traffic
management has been reduced
and two-way traffic has resumed.
“We are currently working with
the service provider on a solution
and once we have that, we can provide
an updated completion date.”
The cycleway project includes
installing a temporary traffic
management layout, new kerbs,
channels, footpaths and drainage,
and building a new shared twoway
path.
“Due to the design clash
being identified early in the
programme, the bulk of the works
which is focused on the south
side of Waterloo Rd is still to be
completed,” Bradbury said.
Once a solution has been found,
it is expected to take about two
months to complete.

Heavyweight LDV lacking refinement
WE START this week’s new
vehicle road test with a question.
Is there any sort of market here
for a huge Chinese made luxury,
all electric seven-seat people
mover costing $119,000?
Chinese automotive giant LDV
reckon there is because that’s
exactly what they have launched
here in the form of the MIFA 9.
If nothing else this imposing,
futuristic looking giant is hard to
miss.
From every angle, this is a big
vehicle at 2-metres wide and
5.3 metres long, and making a
long story longer is MIFA 9’s
3.2-metre wheelbase.
New Zealand gets a threemodel
MIFA 9 range, each with
drive away pricing that leads

off with the entry level Elite at
$79,990, while the mid-spec
Luxury retails for $99,990. Easily
the most expensive model is the
$119,990 Premium provided for
this road test.
This luxury heavyweight of
the giant people mover brigade
possesses a remarkably good
turn of pace for such a high,
wide, long and hefty vehicle at
nearly 2.6 tonne. Providing the
performance fireworks is an
180kW electric motor driving
the front wheels with three drive
modes, Sport, Normal and Eco
available. That motor manages a
decent 350Nm of torque, enough
to propel it from 0-100km/h in a
sharpish 8.9 seconds. All models
are fitted with a large 90kWh

5; Comfort 7; Passenger and Load Space 8; Value for money
6; Safety – Five Star ANCAP crash rating.

acceleration had the test vehicle
moving with almost indecent
haste from traffic light standing
starts, much to the surprise of
drivers it left in its wake. A single
speed automatic keeps things
moving along nicely in both
town and highway driving.
The cabin is seriously large.
This means heaps of space to
pile in a whole bunch of features
that make this a road going
luxury cruise liner. No surprises
then to find two large captain’s
chairs in the second row, with
cooling and heating, massaging
function, with one touch fully
electric reclining. There are
three memory positions, eight
massaging options.
This is a bold breakout vehicle
for LDV, who are intent showing
the automotive world they can
design and build to top class
luxury vehicle – as a first attempt
it shows plenty of promise.
However, these aren’t enough
to ignore its flaws that you
don’t expect in $120K vehicle.
These include inconsistent build
quality, variable attention to
detail and too many hard and
lower grade plastic trims and
surfaces in the cabin.
Also I’d award a 5-star
annoying rating for the vehicle’s
over zealous and loud audible
warnings that burst into their
fullest voice for even the most
minor driving transgressions.
Finding where to silence these
on the small touch screen was
a mission, but there were high
fives all round in the cabin when
we finally hushed this electronic
nagger.
As expected, the ride is skewed
toward comfort and it delvers
that well enough over favourable
road surfaces. It’s less adept on
demanding roads where noise is
more noticeable.
Handling at moderate speeds
over undulating terrain, and
during cornering was better
than expected, but it’s a vehicle
that doesn’t enjoy being hurried
along over these sorts of roads.
Knowing and understanding
the MIFA 9’s road holding
limitations and driving to these
is one of the keys to enjoying this
unique people mover.
