Thursday February 15 2024 Cable clash halts cycleway work • From page 1 “Due to the design clash being identified early in the programme, the bulk of the works which is focused on the south side of Waterloo Rd is still to be completed,” he said. Once a solution has been found, it is expected to take about two months to complete. Also in the area is the Halswell Junction Rd Extension project, which will create a new link from Halswell Junction Rd at Foremans Rd over a new railway crossing to Waterloo Rd to improve safety and the freight network connections to Waterloo Business Park and to Pound Rd. The new road link will redirect traffic through the industrial area and through to Waterloo Business Park. “Once the South Express Cycleway works are completed, the contractor will disestablish their site as no further work can take place until the KiwiRail works at the railway are completed. The KiwiRail works on the railway line are programmed for line closures in June, July, and August 2024,” said Bradbury. “Between now and then, KiwiRail plan to undertake enabling works that do not involve a line closure. Once the KiwiRail works are complete, the new STOP WORK: Construction of the South Express Cycleway has been halted due to an unexpected design clash. level crossing will be opened, the existing level crossing closed and fenced off, and traffic will begin using the new link road to travel north on Halswell Junction Rd. “Following the KiwiRail works, Fulton Hogan will return to construct the cul-de-sac section of Halswell Junction Rd, which will have a new name and numbering.” The Halswell Junction Rd Extension project is funded by the city council’s Long Term Plan and the South Express Major Cycleway has a combination of funding from the Long Term Plan and the Government’s Shovel Ready funding. Dancer off to world champs • From page 1 “Being there will be a good experience, I’ve never been to Scotland before. While I’d like to place higher than I did last year, which was 42nd, getting into the top 50 per cent would be awesome,” said the 15-year-old, who is from Hoon Hay. However, travelling to and from the competition, staying in accommodation and the cost of airfares will be expensive – upwards of $15,000. Luke’s mother Kendra Street said: “If anyone is keen to donate and help, that would be amazing. We have already paid for entry into the competition, our airfares are on the credit card and we are awaiting the council’s response to Luke’s Youth Development funding application. “With every . . . donation, yours or your business name will be printed onto an ‘I have your back’ t-shirt, which Luke will wear out and about to say thank you to his supporters and sponsors.” Luke qualified at the 2023 New Zealand Irish Dancing national championships, held at Burnside High School, having won all three of his dances for the overall title and gaining a perfect score of 300 in the U15s age group. He has been dancing for about five years at the Southern Cross Irish Dance School and has competed regularly for about two years. Said Street: “We first went to a boys-only class before he joined. Luke thought this was quite a unique and fun dance and he had rhythm and could learn the steps. He loves it, when he first started, he would just keep dancing all the time.’’ Luke will be competing in the soft-shoe and hard-shoe 15-16-year-old boys categories at the championship, where, if he places in the top 50 per per cent, he will then be eligible to compete in the set dance category. There will be a panel of five adjudicators to judge and score each dance out of 100 points in aspects including rhythm and musicality, turn and crossover, elevation, speed, power, posture, carriage 5 WINNER: Luke Street won all three of his dances for the overall title in the U15s age group at the New Zealand Irish Dancing Championships, where he also qualified for the world competition. and presence. The overall result is based on the total points a dancer received from their three dances. “Luke has pulled up his socks in terms of training and his presentation during the dances. It was good for him, in his first world championships last year, to see the standard of dancing from all of the other boys, and learn what he needs to do,” said Street. •To help Luke get to Scotland, contact Kendra Street on Facebook or the Southern Cross Irish Dance School page and donate to the bank account: 06- 0829-0100-548-01.
