have come at a more poignant

The Greg Manson-trained 

pacer with a big future took 

out the $30,000 Robin and 

Geraldine Wilson Rangiora 

Classic on Saturday – just 

weeks after a grand finale cancer 

fundraising event linked to 

the colours he races in. 

When Lincoln-based 

Manson’s horses step out onto 

the race track they carry with 

them a very special memory 

to his mate Blair Vining who 

is remembered for his fight for 

better cancer care. 

Manson’s colours have the 

initials BV emblazoned on 

black, red and white. 

BV stands for Blair Vining, 

and the red, black and white 

represent the colours of Vining’s 

rugby club Midland in 

Winton. 

Vining became a national 

identity as he battled terminal 

bowel cancer.

“The city council accepts that 

we decided to build the stadium 

and will fund its construction,” 

the letter says. 

But Broughton, who has previously 

called for the discussion to 

be Canterbury-wide, reiterated 

that in a responding letter to 

Mauger. 

“We believe this conversation 

about the operations of a regional 

facility needs to be with the whole 

region in the first instance, 

rather than just with Selwyn and 

Waimakariri.”

A SCHOOL has again pleaded 

for better infrastructure and 

lower speeds to protect its pupils. 

West Rolleston Primary 

School is on the corner of Dunns 

Crossing Rd and Burnham 

School Rd and currently has a 

50km/h speed limit around it, 

and no pedestrian crossing. 

The school does operate a Kea 

crossing at the start and end of 

the school day. 

In December, the Government 

sent a letter to all councils 

advising them to pause work 

on speed limits until the 

Government has developed its 

new speed limit setting rules 

with NZ Transport Agency 

Waka Kotahi. 

Twenty-six schools in Selwyn 

would have had either variable 

speed limits or permanent 

30km/h limits added in the 

council’s speed management 

plan, with some of the changes 

made before schools reopened in 

the new year. 

Last week, school board 

chair Rob Hunt pleaded with 

councillors for help with 

infrastructure and speed. 

“We can’t stress enough how 

concerned we remain around 

our tamariki our community 

and the impact of safety that is 

evident everyday.” 

Hunt said about 600 of the 

800 pupils at the school use the 

crossing. 

“When you have that many 

people crossing a road every day 

you actually of the risk of injury 

or risk to life.

Brown said he is currently

Brown did not provide a 

specific timeframe for the 

changes to be made. 

“The new rule will also 

implement variable speed limits 

on roads approaching schools 

during pick up and drop off 

times, rather than permanent 

reductions, to keep young New 

Zealanders safe when they are 

arriving at or leaving school,” 

Brown said. 

Brown did not say whether the 

Government would help pay for 

the increased costs of installing 

digital variable speed signs. 

Since West Rolleston Primary 

School opened eight years ago, 

Hunt has done three public 

forums to the council. 

The councillors will discuss 

the matter further at today’s 

transport and infrastructure 

meeting.

Board will select its chair at

thrown into turmoil at the end

A motorcyclist received serious 

injuries after crashing through a 

guardrail on the one-way bridge

collided with another motorcyclist 

then hit the guardrail. The other 

rider has moderate injuries.

“Their level of interest will be 

crucial in any discussion, including 

any potential discussion at a 

regional level,” Mauger said. 

“This is only a very early first 

step on formal discussions and 

does not preclude any other 

discussions.” 

Mauger is yet to respond to 

Broughton’s letter. 

No specific numbers are given 

in the letter, but 2019 estimates 

show without any contribution 

from surrounding councils, 

Christchurch ratepayers would 

be paying $144 on their rates 

each year. 

Mauger is proposing a joint 

funding model similar to the 

one for the Canterbury Museum, 

which costs Selwyn ratepayers 

$37 on their rates bill annually. 

Currently, Selwyn ratepayers 

are looking at a 16 per cent rates 

rise this year, and doubledigit 

rates rises for the next 

three years. 

When Selwyn Times 

asked readers in January 

for their opinions on 

contributing towards the 

stadium there were mixed 

views, with some supporting 

it and others against it. 

Rolleston Residents Association 

chair Mark Alexander said 

his personal view, which does 

not reflect the association’s, was 

the city has not been a good 

neighbour. 

“If Christchurch 

wants to talk about 

facility funding on a 

regional basis, that’s fine 

but we (Selwyn) also 

operate facilities that 

Christchurch residents 

use.”

to receiving the conversational 

proposal, but has not committed 

to funding it. 

“We do not have any funds 

currently set aside and have no 

plans in our future budgets to 

start contributing.” 

He said any funding assistance 

would be consulted on with 

residents. 

“Any future decision 

to contribute or not also 

needs to be put to the 

community through 

proper consultation to 

understand their desire 

and ability to pay. This has 

been my commitment to 

the Selwyn community 

which I have reinforced 

every time I have been asked 

about the topic,” Broughton said. 

Mauger said Te Kaha is expected 

to open in mid-2026, and 

operational costs are forecast 

to start in the 2026-27 financial 

year. 

A Waimakariri District Council 

spokesperson confirmed the 

letter had been received, and the 

council would meet in the coming 

weeks to consider it. 

“Currently, there is no funding 

put aside or anticipated in our 

Long Term Plan for this. Any 

potential contribution from 

Waimakariri District would 

need to be subject to full community 

consultation before any 

decision was made,” they said. 

Scott had received Mauger’s 

letter and said staff were 

currently considering it. 

“We are waiting for 

staff advice to come 

through,” Scott said. 

“We’re not quite sure 

they need us to be the 

mechanism to collect the 

rate. How far out does 

that push? Is it to Kaikoura, 

Waimate, Waitaki? 

We don’t know.” 

Scott agreed with Broughton 

about having a regional discussion. 

“I think he’s probably right, 

that’s a reasonable view on that. 

But what I would say also is where 

it’s happened in other areas it has 

been capital regionally rather than 

operating expenditure.” 

At this stage, all Mauger said 

all he is asking for is whether the 

councils will receive a funding 

proposal. 

“This is not asking you to 

make a binding decision, only 

whether you would be willing to 

look at options further.”

New street lights branded ‘style crime’ 


NEW STREET lights in 

Prebbelton have been labelled 

hideous and cheap. 

Antique-style street lights have 

recently been replaced with LED 

equivalents, which residents say 

look out of place. 

Resident Roger Sell said the 

lights should have been replaced 

with what was there. 

“I would have thought you 

would have found a like-for-like 

LED version to replace them,” he 

said. 

“It is a feature of your street 

when you move into it.”

property Murray England said it 

has been upgrading 9000 street 

lights across the district. 

“Since 2017, the council has 

been upgrading these streetlights 

to LEDs as part of a nationwide 

effort co-funded by NZ Transport 

Agency Waka Kotahi,” 

Washington said. 

“Changing to LEDs reduces 

the cost to our ratepayers and 

helps improve our carbon footprint. 

“LEDs use less power, are 

cheaper to maintain, give less 

light pollution and have the 

ability for us to add remote connection 

so we can turn them up, 

down or off more easily.” 

The council is in the final stages 

of the project, changing the 

last of its 5000 non-LED lights 

to new standard LED lights over 

this year. 

The budget for the district 

for the project is $4,885,000 of 

which Waka Kotahi has provided 

$3,357,146 in co-funding.

Receivers put project manager’s home

A FAILED building project 

manager’s million-dollar 

property has been put on 

the block by receivers as 

tradespeople - including a 

Selwyn plumber - are still owed 

thousands from a previous 

bankruptcy. 

The five-double bedroom, 

three-bathroom property on 

Chevron Pl, Ilam, occupied by 

Marc Findlay and Deborah Jane 

Robinson-Findlay was scheduled 

to be sold by deadline sale late 

yesterday. 

It had a rateable value of $1.18 

million in August 2022. 

The property is among collateral 

supplied by the couple to 

receivers Waterstone Insolvency, 

which is acting on behalf of 

Auckland-based business finance 

lender Ignite Solutions Ltd. 

Marc Findlay and Deborah 

Jane Robinson-Findlay were 

jointly placed into receivership 

on December 1 last year. 

Peter Drennan from Waterstone 

Insolvency said although 

Ignite Solutions Ltd was the sole 

appointer for the receiverships, it 

was aware of a number of other 

claims. 

“It’s not appropriate for us to 

comment on totals or numbers 

at this stage,” he said, adding not 

all creditors have claims against 

both individuals.

Selwyn plumber Darren Maher 

was caught up in the collapse 

of Project 1 Design, and says he 

is still owed $65,000 for unpaid 

work carried out at an apartment 

complex on Manchester St in 

March 2017. 

He is investigating whether he 

can make a claim on proceeds 

from the house sale. 

“I’m speaking to my legal 

team. It’s still a possibility,” he 

said. 

Maher was among unsecured 

creditors owed $611,333.20, according 

to a liquidators’ report 

dated February 2018. 

“I was one of the ones who 

bankrupted him. I’ve been to the 

police, it’s just complete and utter 

burglary. He done me out of 

$65,000 plus GST in a week.” 

He said the work at six apartments 

on Manchester St was 

completed on April 3, 2017, and 

three days later Findlay had told 

him via a text message a payment 

had been made, but it did 

not appear in Gillon & Maher 

Plumbing Ltd’s bank account. 

On April 17, 2017, Maher told 

police he received an email from 

Findlay saying that he (Findlay) 

had not been paid “and for that 

he was forced to take action”.

demand rises

GROWING DEMAND for cream 

cheese in China has seen Fonterra 

ramp up production at its Darfield 

site. 

The cream cheese factory is 

forecast to export around 20,000 

tonnes of cream cheese to China 

this season, and 1500MT to South 

East Asia. 

Plant manager Matt Smith said 

exports were growing year-onyear 

and sales had really picked 

ahead of Chinese New Year. 

“Due to the growing demand 

we’ve been able to increase 

production; the team recently 

made significant efficiency, 

quality, and yield improvements 

- to increase annual throughput 

by an additional 2100MT per year 

- all executed with zero capital 

spend.” 

Smith said cream cheese was 

common in traditional Chinese 

pastries and was used in tea 

macchiatos, made using a base of 

Chinese tea, topped with a cap of 

cream and cream cheese that is 

whipped together until it forms a 

light and fluffy texture. 

When drinking a tea macchiato, 

the goal is to sip the drink at a 

45-degree angle to get the ideal 

mix of tea and creamy topping in 

each mouthful.

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY’S end-of-year 

party could be back after it was called off 

last year. 

In previous years, the Garden Party has 

marked the end of lectures for students 

and is a day of music and partying at the 

university’s sports fields. 

Lincoln University Students Association 

(LUSA) met with police, St John and the 

district licencing inspector about hosting 

the event in its full capacity again this 

year, which requires LUSA to gain a special 

liquor licence. 

New LUSA president Demetrio 

Cooper was reluctant to answer 

questions from Selwyn Times and 

said little about the meeting or 

plans for the event. 

“We are working with the external 

authorities like Selwyn (alcohol) 

licensing and the university at 

the moment and once I have more 

information we can let you know,” 

Cooper said. 

“It would be good to see an 

event, but if we have any more information 

I’ll share it later, but I’d like to see something 

this year.” 

Council head of regulatory Sue Atherton 

said no event details were confirmed and 

there has been no application for a licence 

made by LUSA. 

“There was a meeting with the LUSA 

which was a presentation from them to the 

university and tri agencies (police, St John 

and the district licencing inspector) advising 

that they are looking at options for the 

Garden Party 2024,” Atherton said. 

“All alcohol licence applications submitted 

in Selwyn are reported on by the tri 

agencies. The district licencing committee 

then needs to consider the application.” 

Last year the event never got off the 

ground. In June former LUSA president 

Amy Wells said it had “been forced” to 

make changes to the event which included 

a Lincoln student-only rule. The Garden 

Party was due to be replaced with a 

scaled-back lawn party, but that was later 

cancelled due to low ticket sales. 

At the time Wells nor the university did 

not comment on the reason for the shift in 

the events rules. 

However, Selwyn Times understands 

LUSA’s hand may have been 

forced by university management 

after issues with student behaviour 

pre and post-event in 2022. 

The university has been firm in 

denying any involvement with the 

event, despite LUSA meeting minutes 

from last year showing a desire 

from vice-chancellor Professor 

Grant Edwards to reduce risk to 

the students and wider community 

from the event. 

“There has been a desire from the university’s 

vice chancellor to aim to reduce 

the risk to students and the wider community 

at Garden Party,” the minutes said. 

Cooper would not be drawn to comment 

on why Garden Party was restructured 

last year. 

“There was lots of whispers everywhere, 

but I don’t listen to whispers.” 

The university again declined to answer 

questions from Selwyn Times relating to its 

involvement in the planning and approval 

of the Garden Party.

potential as a new superfood. 

Researcher’s work 

on caterpillars as 

future food earns 

her trip to Japan 

A LINCOLN University lecturer’s research 

into native caterpillars as a new superfood 

has earned her a trip to Japan to rub 

shoulders with a roomful of Nobel Prize 

winners. 

PhD student Chrystal O’Connor has 

been granted a Catalyst: Leaders fund 

through the Royal Society Te Apārangi 

to travel to the 15th HOPE meeting, with 

seven Nobel laureates in Kyoto, which 

starts on Monday. 

The meeting will be attended by 

students from Asia-Pacific and Africa. 

O’Connor is one of five others travelling 

from New Zealand. 

The event aims to inspire and motivate 

them to become excellent scientists who 

are able to shoulder the future of science 

and technology in the region. 

“I’m looking forward to making new 

connections and hearing new ideas,” 

O’Connor said. 

“My PhD is looking at insects that are 

unique to Aotearoa and feeding them 

rākau rongoā (medicinal plants) to see if 

this increases the nutritional value of the 

insect and if they are a viable source of 

sustainable food.” 

The plants, including manuka and 

kawakawa, showed signs of having 

beneficial properties for the native 

caterpillars she has studied. 

O’Connor grew up working on a dairy 

farm near Cambridge, Waikato. She 

completed a master’s on milk protein 

digestion. When choosing her PhD 

focus, she changed direction to look at 

indigenous foods and sustainability with 

AgResearch. 

She said insects like caterpillars are 

traditional indigenous foods in some 

cultures but had not been eaten for many 

years. 

SCIENCE: Chrystal O’Connor is 

heading to Japan for the 15th 

HOPE meeting which starts on 

Monday. 

O’Connor has carried out surveys which 

showed many Māori would be willing to 

try the caterpillars. In parts of the world, 

such as Asia and Africa, eating insects is a 

normal practice. 

But O’Connor believes more work 

needs to be done if they are to become a 

widely accepted food source, despite their 

high protein levels and the extra benefits 

imbued on them by medicinal plants. 

O’Connor is also looking into the 

medicinal qualities of New Zealand’s 

endemic native plants. 

In semester 1 next year, she will be 

sharing her knowledge with Lincoln 

students during a Mahika Kai course, 

which will cover food gathering and the 

ecosystems and habitats these species are 

found in. 

O’Connor also plans to stop off in the 

United States on her way home from 

Japan to attend an indigenous farming 

conference.

required. I wonder how many

their own income to increase 

by 50 per cent over the next 

three years. That’s the increase

Council rates have always 

increased and often well above 

inflation figures. We have a great 

many new homes in the district, 

all contributing funds. 

You might imagine that with 

all that extra income we could 

have a rates reduction! Why have 

such huge increases become 

necessary? 

Has council been fiscally 

irresponsible? I think 

the increases are totally 

unreasonable and we should, at 

the very least, have very clear 

explanations as to why the 

increases are ‘needed’.

WHEN PAUL Penning was 

gifted a train set as a boy, he was 

instantly hooked. Now many 

years down the track, he’s been 

able to reconnect with the hobby. 

The 74-year-old has spent 

the past five years making 

miniatures of buildings for 

his model railway, including 

several scale replicas of Selwyn 

structures. 

“My grandfather gave me a 

model railway for my birthday 

when I was very young and I 

had a model railway to about the 

time I went to high school, then 

of course life got in the way,’ Paul 

said. 

“My grandchildren love it 

now.” 

His collection of scale replicas 

includes The Famous Grouse 

Hotel, Lincoln Library, the 

former Lincoln Railway Station 

and Prebbleton goods shed, Lincoln 

Union Church and, most 

recently, Coffee Culture. 

Paul is a retired aircraft 

engineer, who worked for 

National Airways Corporation, 

Mt Cook Airlines and Air New 

Zealand. 

He said of building the 

miniatures: “I just enjoy making 

them. I enjoyed the challenge of 

designing them on the computer. 

Since retirement, I’ve taught 

myself two computer programs, 

one to work a 3D printer and one 

to work a Cricut, which is a poor 

man’s laser cutter. And I make 

the models from those.” 

The 3D printer was a birthday 

present from his children, and 

his wife bought the Cricut. 

“As part of my career I’d seen 

3D printing being done and I 

thought actually I could use this 

for model making. 

“So my three children built 

houses and they asked me to 

make models of their houses, 

so they could see. So I started 

doing that and then when we 

were building this house here in 

Lincoln, I built a model of that, 

and it’s just gone on from there.” 

He built the model of 

Coffee Culture because his 

granddaughter worked there, but 

generally, it’s just buildings he 

finds interesting. 

“The combined Presbyterian 

church I thought was a great 

looking building, the Grouse I 

thought again it’s good looking, 

interesting architecture, and the 

same for the library.” 

Now he has a running N-gauge 

layout (1:160 scale), which 

includes buildings such as the 

Grouse. 

Paul’s goal is not to replicate 

every detail of Lincoln, but 

rather to follow a general 

New Zealand theme featuring 

buildings from the district. 

“They’ll go creatively in their 

own spaces, I don’t want to 

be too realistic about it, 

otherwise you get yourself into 

a bind.” 

He is constantly thinking 

about what to build. 

An OO-gauge layout (1:76 

scale), with structures such as 

the library, is next on his list. 

“Lying in bed last night, I 

thought I need to build another 

railway layout so I can run a 

lot of the models of trains and 

locomotives that I’ve built. So 

maybe that will be the next thing 

I do. Though because of the fire 

in the Port Hills, I wondered 

about doing the Lincoln Fire 

Station.” 

Paul recently took his model of 

the library to the library. 

“They were quite interested. 

I was sort of surprised. They 

wanted to put it on their 

Facebook page. There’s been 

quite a bit of response to that.”

Toughest match yet for Weedons

WEEDONS ARE now just one 

game away from the chance 

to defend their Canterbury 

Country T20 title. 

But that game, against unbeaten 

Sefton in the last round of 

the competition, could prove to 

be their biggest challenge yet. 

A win will see Weedons make 

the final, but if they slip up, 

big wins for either Darfield or 

Leeston-Southbridge could see 

them leapfrogged. 

Weedons player-coach Jeremy 

Benton said Sefton would likely 

be their toughest match of the 

season. 

“Their big players stand up 

every single game. 

“Nothing too crazy, but they 

just know how to win games of 

cricket. Some people don’t really 

like it, but I massively respect it, 

and I just love the way that they 

go about their work.” 

Weedons would have their spot 

in the final confirmed already if 

not for a loss against Leeston on 

Saturday where they could only 

score 111 batting first. 

Despite a flurry of early 

wickets, including a screamer of 

a catch from Akhil Pant at first 

slip, Leeston brothers Harry and 

Sam Chamberlain scored 53 not 

out and 31 runs respectively to 

see them home.

but Benton said either side 

was unlikely to be heavily impacted. 

“A big reason why Sefton and 

Weedons do go pretty well is because 

we don’t actually have too 

many country lads in the set-up,” 

he said.

Sefton) has been playing a little 

bit, but I don’t know if he will 

be in it, and they’re trying to get

Benton hopes the net-run-rate 

margin from Weedons (+1.920) 

to Leeston (-0.228) and Darfield 

(-1.543) is big enough there’s no 

way they can be overtaken – but 

he said there’s not much point 

worrying about it. 

“I guess we just focus on playing 

alright on Friday. 

“It’s a good excuse for us to 

really go out and play with a bit 

more freedom and just give our 

batters a chance to have a whack. 

“And yeah, hopefully, get a win 

up on Sefton.” 

The last round of the T20 competition 

is being played on Friday 

night, to avoid a clash with 

music festival Electric Avenue on 

Saturday.

Country gears up for 

Hawke Cup challenge

LEESTON all-rounder Sam 

Chamberlain is preparing to lead 

Canterbury Country in their 

biggest match of the season. 

Country will take on regular 

rivals Hawke’s Bay for the 

prestigious Hawke Cup, with 

competition starting on 

Friday. 

The cup, often referred to as 

the Ranfurly Shield of provincial 

cricket, was won by Hawke’s Bay 

in November when they beat 

Country convincingly. Country 

previously held the cup in 2022, 

when they won it off Hawke’s Bay. 

Now, after making it through 

the upper South Island qualifiers 

against the likes of Nelson 

and Marlborough, Country will 

have the chance to win it back in 

Napier. 

Chamberlain, who captains 

the side, said the rematch with 

Hawke’s Bay provides an extra 

level of motivation. 

“We’ve created a bit of a rivalry 

with these guys over the last 

couple of years. 

“They’re a very strong team 

and have a lot of representative 

players so I know it’ll be a good 

challenge, but I think everyone’s 

excited by that.”

Malvern wins 100th 

Oakes challenge 

THE MALVERN Rifle Club has 

claimed the Oakes Challenge 

Shield in the 100th year of the 

competition. 

Held between Malvern and the 

Ashburton District Rifle Club for 

the first time in 1924, the winners 

of the shield host the challengers 

each year. 

Two teams of both target rifle 

and F-class shooters contested the 

match at Malvern on Saturday. 

The scores of the top eight 

from each team were combined 

on a “points down” from the 

maximum and “centres up” to 

determine the winning club 

team, with 10 counting shots per 

shooter at 300 and 600 yards. 

It was a fine and hot day with a 

southwesterly wind, which made 

for very challenging conditions at 

300 yards, with frequent shifts in 

the wind. 

Conditions were more settled, 

or more predictable, at 600 yards, 

with generally better scores. 

Malvern’s Andre du Toit, 

Daniel Alexander and Ran Bao 

scored maximums at 600 yards, 

while Malvern’s Sam Kershaw 

and Ashburton’s John Snowden 

were both only three points down 

for the day. 

Malvern won with a score of 

66 points down and 45 centres 

up, versus Ashburton’s 81 points 

down and 40 centres up.

rural vet scheme

24-year-old Sam beams with 

enthusiasm. Having lived in the 

North Island all her life and gained 

her Bachelor of Veterinary Science at 

Massey University, she snapped up the 

chance to start her veterinary career in 

Selwyn’s rural communities, supported 

by a government scheme. 

The Ministry for Primary Industries’ 

Voluntary Bonding Scheme is 

designed to ease the shortage of rural 

veterinarians working with production 

animals and working dogs. Since 2009, 

it has supported 449 graduate vets. This 

year’s intake has just been announced 

– 33 graduates, linked to 24 rural 

communities across the country. 

Samantha Johnson is one of these 

graduates, splitting her time between 

Leeston and Lincoln VetEnts. This 

gives her a great introduction to the 

variety of rural veterinary life, with 

the lifestyle block focus at Lincoln, 

and Leeston tending more towards 

farming work. She loves heading out 

in the well-equipped VetEnt truck to 

tackle whatever she’s faced with on 

farm. Working with the “largies”, as she 

affectionally calls them, is her particular 

passion. 

Sam always knew she wanted to be a 

vet, right from her first visit to a clinic 

as a kiddie with the family dog. She was 

obsessed while growing up but even so, 

money could have been a real barrier. 

The training is long and expensive, and 

not everyone has financial supports 

within their family. 

Vet graduates typically leave with a 

student loan of up to $100,000. This 

bonding scheme pays $55,000 over 

five years, directly against the loan. 

Graduates must complete at least three 

years before payments start. 

Sam is very grateful that this funding 

meant she could stay in NZ to start her 

career, instead of chasing higher starter 

salaries in Australia. 

The veterinary clinics are also very 

glad to have her. Jessica Rees, Leeston’s 

Clinic Coordinator, says “Having her 

production animal expertise on the 

team has greatly expanded our services. 

And because the scheme lasts for five 

years, Sam is building real and lasting 

connections.” 

Sam’s mentor at Leeston, Annalisa 

Pope, also speaks enthusiastically. “Sam’s 

energy – and her up-to-the minute 

training – is giving a real lift to all of 

us. It’s a two-way street – we’re learning 

from her just as she is from us.”

Sam’s genuine duty of care to animals 

is beyond question – she says: “I can be 

their voice.” Selwyn District is lucky that 

this scheme brought her to us.

It’s back – the tree 

trimming scam

This scam is on the rise again in regional 

and rural towns across Canterbury, and 

it’s a particularly unpleasant one as it often 

preys on the elderly and vulnerable. 

The scenario goes like this… Someone 

knocks on your door, wearing a high vis 

vest – the universal passport! They say 

that they were working on another tree 

job near you, and noticed that you have a 

dying/diseased/dangerous tree. They offer 

to trim it for you at a reduced price, “while 

they are in the area”. 

Sometimes they will knock on every 

door, but more often, they will have 

scoped you out. They’re looking for people 

who look vulnerable and are likely to 

accept an offer of help – they’ll check for 

a badly kept garden or street frontage, 

disability-related ramps, handles or car 

stickers, and elderly people gardening on 

their own. 

Additional nasty details are that they 

may target people whose first language is 

not English, or where there has recently 

been a natural disaster such as earthquake 

or flooding. 

Once they’re on your property, they 

might demand cash up front, start the job 

then require payment before completing 

it, refuse to clear the trimmings unless you 

pay more, and are undoubtedly scoping 

the property and what you’ve got in your 

garage or shed. 

And of course, they will not do a good 

job on the tree, which might have been 

perfectly healthy in the first place. 

Real arborist companies DO: 

• Send out a qualified arborist to assess the 

task, access and any risks 

• Provide a detailed quote, in writing 

• Invoice for payment once the work is 

completed to your satisfaction 

• Have a proper website, with uptodate 

certification and insurance certificates 

and customer recommendations and 

references 

• Provide their own, serviced equipment 

and safety equipment 

• Understand the legal requirements of 

tree work, including when working near 

power lines 

Real arborist companies DO NOT: 

• Door knock for work 

The way to protect yourself is to get at 

least three written quotes, ideally from 

companies that are members of the 

NZ Arboricultural Association -

The scam is serious and frequent 

enough that it is highlighted both on the

and neighbours to spread the word.

IT HASN’T been an easy summer 

in the garden. 

Exceptionally unsettled weather 

has occurred in all parts of New 

Zealand with extremes of heat, 

wind and rain. Regardless of 

this, February is still a significant 

month for harvesting crops and 

reaping the benefits of your hard 

work both in the home orchard 

and vegetable garden. 

Summer salad vegetables 

should be at their peak this 

month. Ensure plants are regularly 

watered to maintain healthy 

growth, especially cucumbers, 

tomatoes, lettuce and radishes. 

Other typical summer veges include 

beans (climber and dwarf), 

aubergines, courgettes, beetroot, 

corn, onions, peppers and pumpkin, 

and should all be ready to 

harvest. 

Remove any plants that have 

cropped and finished for the 

season to provide room for winter 

vegetables (broccoli, brussels 

sprouts, cabbages and cauliflower) 

which can now be planted to mature 

in the early winter. Consider 

saving seed from your favourite 

summer vegetables, particularly 

beans and tomatoes. 

Late season’s peaches and plums 

are now maturing, and apples 

and pears are beginning to ripen, 

particularly early varieties such 

as gala. Fruit are now forming on 

citrus trees (ripening in midwinter). 

Ensure all fruit trees are 

well mulched to help maintain 

soil moisture and reduce weed 

growth. 

Most strawberry fruiting has 

now finished, so allow growth to 

provide runners for next seasons 

plantings or remove old plants. It’s 

possible to obtain a second crop 

on raspberry plants in February, 

especially if old wood has 

been removed after the first crop.

Almost all herbs thrive in the

However, a number do flower and 

go to seed in late-February so remove

plants. You can also gather leaves 

for drying which is easy to do. 

Simply place the leaves in a shallow 

tray in a dry, sunny, sheltered 

position. Leave them for about 

two to three weeks, which should 

be sufficient time for drying. 

February provides the peak of 

display for summer annuals that 

thrive in the hot summer months, 

like cosmos, marigolds, petunias, 

salvias, portulacas and zinnias. 

Plant ‘potted colour’ to brighten 

up containers or special parts 

of the garden. Continue deadheading 

plants to help maintain 

continuous flowering. 

Keep roses well-watered and 

apply mulch to keep moisture and 

nutrients in.

garlic in 

the ground 

WE ALL know garlic wards off 

vampires, but did you know it also 

keeps away aphids, apple scab, 

leaf-curl and mosquitoes? 

Crush a few cloves, soak in a 

litre of water for a couple of days 

and use as a spray to keep at bay 

ants, spiders, caterpillars and cabbage 

and tomato worms too. 

And, did you also know, it’s said 

to provide many health benefits 

I’m not qualified to list? 

To put it simply, garlic’s right up 

there with marigolds as the companion 

plant every garden should 

have and it is soon time to plant it. 

Look for a well-drained spot – 

pots, hanging baskets or any available 

space in your raised garden 

will suit. 

If you’re growing it for its 

guardian capabilities, plant it next 

to your roses to ward off aphids, 

beneath apple and peach trees to 

prevent apple scab and leaf-curl, 

and next to your tomatoes to protect 

against red spider. 

Dig in some compost, and 

nitrophoska blue fertiliser or use 

a potting mix if you’re planting in 

baskets or pots. 

Plant single cloves twice the 

depth of the actual clove, compost 

over the top and don’t fill in with 

soil. Then harvest later in the year. 

It’s as easy as that.

Corolla enters brave new hybrid world 

TOYOTA’S TOP selling 

Corolla has upped its low 

engine emissions credentials 

in this country, by ditching the 

2.0-litre petrol model, and only 

offering hybrid petrol-electrical 

powertrains across the entire 

range. 

Corolla, is one of the best 

selling cars on the planet with 

more than 50 million sold since 

it launched nearly 60-years ago. 

Its huge success over this time 

has been anchored on it being 

solid, dependable and affordable, 

and never waivering from those 

core attributes which made 

it an automotive icon. At the 

same time, it has embraced new 

technology including safety and 

been responsive to changing 

buyer demand. 

The 12th generation Corolla 

has been with us since 2019, 

and a quantum advance over 

its predecessor with a more 

engaging driving experience, 

something that hasn’t 

traditionally been of strength 

of this model. It really hits the 

mark by offering high levels of 

advanced safety technology, 

and clever touches such as 

Mobile Assistant. This uses 

Motoring with Bob Nettleton 

Siri or Google Assistant voice 

commands to perform simple 

connectivity tasks like sending 

a text message or setting a 

reminder. 

Modern consumers prefer 

hybrid-electric powertrains 

that are now the most popular 

choice across the Corolla range. 

In the last two years, a lot of 

that is down to the now ditched 

generous Government clear car 

rebate. While the pace of buyer 

interest in EVs and hybrids 

will slow with the demise 

of incentive, interest won’t 

evaporate. I expect they will 

continue to appeal to those who 

value low emissions and running 

costs, and vehicle fleet operators 

striving to reduce their carbon 

footprints. Nearly two years 

ago there were eight models in 

the Corolla line-up. Going all 

hybrids has halved that figure, 

with a hybrid model among the 

casualties, with Toyota hitting 

the delete button on the sedan. 

This is the first time in decades 

this body style hasn’t featured 

in the Corolla NZ range. A 

shame really, because the latest 

version was one of the best, but 

buyer interest has waned even 

from the rental car firms and 

fleet operators, traditionally the 

largest purchasers of this model. 

Firing the opening shot in 

the hybridised three hatchback 

and one wagon Corolla family 

is the price leading $36,995 

GX, followed by the mid-range 

$39,190 SX and rounding the 

hatch offering, is the flagship 

$42,190 ZR being reviewed 

here. There’s a GX wagon 

available for $36,990. The only 

remaining petrol only model is 

the $76,000 high performance 

229kw 1.6-litre turbo GR hatch. 

It’s only available in very limited 

numbers, with the 150 units a 

year earmarked for our market 

allocated via a ballot system. An 

optional $1000 two-tone paint 

job buys you a black roof that 

contrasts really well with the 

bolder colours in the Corolla 

paint swatch, to provide a more 

sophisticated look. 

From a driving pleasure 

perspective, the sweet 125kW 

2.0-litre dynamic torque internal 

combustion engine naturally 

aspirated engine will be missed. 

It always impressed with its 

strong and zippy performance 

and crisp throttle responsive. 

By comparison the 1.8-litre 

petrol electric hybrid, even with 

a combined power output has 

been bumped up to 103kw for a 

healthy 13kw power gain, lacks 

that zing. The extra urge for the 

hybrid models is off the back of 

Ratings out of 10: Performance 6; Handling 7; Build Quality 

7; Comfort 7; Passenger and Load Space 5; Fuel Economy, 

on road test average consumption: 5.1L /100km Styling 7; 

Safety – Five Star ANCAP crash rating. 

Overall points out of 10: 7 

the addition of a slightly larger 

and powerful battery pack. 

The extra performance is 

most obvious in around town 

motoring. Here the test car now 

runs for longer periods on flat 

terrain in EV only at speeds of 

up to 50km/h. The extra hybrid 

heft is less noticeable at higher 

speed open road cruising. 

Dropping the transmission 

into Sport mode was the best 

option for brisk overtaking, or 

maintaining a respectable pace 

on long hill climbs. It’s a pity 

the Corolla here doesn’t use the 

same impressive 135kW 2.0-litre 

petrol electric hybrid system that 

features in this model on some 

overseas markets. It does a great 

job in the Corolla Cross that 

arrived here about a year ago. 

Maybe Toyota is keeping their 

powder dry on it until we see an 

all-new Corolla some time in 

2025. 

The Constant Variable 

Transmission automatic has a 

dynamic shift featuring a gear 

and belt drive system to improve 

transmission performance in the 

lower ratios, where belt efficiency 

isn’t so great. It uses a gear drive 

from standing starts, resulting 

in stronger acceleration, and 

reduces the irritating momentary 

sluggishness off the mark that 

characterised the CVT in the 

outgoing model. 

There are lots of positives 

about this latest Corolla but 

not a modestly proportioned 

cabin. Passenger space for rear 

seat occupants is cramped with 

limited head and legroom. Large 

wrap-around driver and front 

passenger seats accentuate the 

slightly claustrophobic feel for 

rear seat occupants. 

Befitting its top-of-the-range 

status, the ZR is equipped 

with a large colour head-up 

display, 18-inch alloys, leather 

and suede accented sports 

front seats, 8-speaker premium 

audio system, ambient cabin 

illumination, and high-grade bi- 

LED headlamps. 

This new model has an even 

smarter version of Toyota’s Safety 

Sense technology package, with 

one of the headline changes a 

pedestrian and cyclist detection 

system. Some other notables 

items from this package’s bag of 

safety tricks, are autonomous 

emergency braking, all speed 

dynamic radar cruise control 

and automatic high beam on and 

off. 

Handling went up several 

notches with his newest Corolla 

I cannot remember a version 

that got close to this one for crisp 

road holding and supple riding. 

The suspension acts quickly and 

decisively to calm and soothe 

the vehicle and its occupants 

through unexpected changes in 

direction by the driver, or the 

road surface. 

This Corolla is full of surprises, 

most positive around how it 

rides, drives and handles.

Police say the 25-year-old 

from Burnham recorded 1026

litre of breath. The lega limit is 

250mcg/l. He was also charged 

with sustained lo s of traction.

A DARFIELD farmer has 

spoken of watching a man leap into 

the flooded Hawkins River to try and 

save himself after a helicopter winch 

rescue operation failed. 

Rod May had taken his tractor to 

the scene on Greendale Rd, to try and 

reach the middle-aged man who had 

been clinging to the branches of a tree 

in the rising waters on Sunday night. 

The man had driven into the 

flooded river, escaped from his car 

and ca led emergency services from 

his ce lphone which he managed to 

keep with him. 

Ultimately, a second helicopter 

winch operation plucked the man 

to safety after he was swept downstream. 

It was a happy ending to the 

ordeal which had lasted more than 

three hours. The rescue was among 

several in Canterbury on Sunday in 

flooded rivers. 

May said he and his family had just 

had dinner when a neighbour alerted 

them. Arriving about 8.50pm, he saw 

the floodwaters were too high for the 

tractor, however, he used its lights for 

i luminating the site where the man

four times by youth believes a 

family group conference was a 

waste of time. 

The meeting involved one 

of the teens, a 13-year-old, 

his family, Oranga Tamariki, 

police and four other victims, 

including another dairy 

owner. 

Facilitated by Oranga 

Tamariki, youth justice family 

group conferences are 

intended to help youth take 

responsibility and leave them 

with a plan for the future. 

While the victims could 

speak a the meeting, Sangeet 

Mehta said the decision had 

already been made as to what 

would happen with the youth. 

The victim’s views did not 

make a difference.

A BAR patron who won $1200 

on the pokies may have been 

targeted by thieves moments after 

she co lected the money. 

A group of men who were in 

the bar a the same time are the 

focus of police inquiries. It is 

believed they watched her being 

paid, and then quickly swooped. 

The incident happened at The 

Famous Grouse Hotel in Lincoln 

two weeks ago. 

After she was paid out a the 

bar, the men who had been 

si ting nearby went over and 

congratulated her. While she was 

distracted the money disappeared 

from her handbag. She only 

realised it was gone after she left 

the hotel. 

Police have taken CCTV 

security camera footage from the 

hotel which shows the men going 

over to the woman and mobbing 

her in a congratulatory way. The 

footage also captures a hand from 

one of the men going towards the 

bag. 

Police say they may have 

identified one of the group but 

aren’t saying anymore about 

the incident. The Selwyn Times 

understands the men are from 

the Amberley area.

underway, it is really tempting to start 

choosing brand new furniture for your 

new home, placing items on order before 

moving in. 

Holding off until you are in is a really 

good idea. 

Often older furniture can look tired 

in the setting of a brand new home yet 

choosing new items before you are in and 

have a true appreciation of the spatial 

elements of the home, can be a mistake. 

For starters, you might not have the 

budget right at the end of the build for 

splashing out on new lounge and bedroom 

suites or other pieces for the home. 

Secondly, there can be surprises as to what 

will work and what definitely needs to go 

on TradeMe or taken to the local op shop. 

The old chest or armchair which 

has been in the family for 100 years 

may look great in the new house once 

reconditioned with new stain or paint then 

re-upholstered. Tired old chairs, settees or 

ottomans can come to life when restored, 

providing a comfy seat in the bedroom 

or another corner of the house while also 

bringing a touch of colour to an otherwise 

neutrally toned décor. Bright paint 

and stencilling can also be used to add 

vibrancy to furniture for a child’s room. 

Furnishing items may be given a totally 

different purpose, adding character to a
