Cameron Bailey of Harcourts gold is exceptiona ly good at what he does. Do not
waste your time (and potentia life savings) going with anyone else other than
Harcourts gold in Christchurch and surrounding areas. Cam and his team sold
our house in just 3 weeks and the efficiency and professionalism in which they
achieved our desired result was very impressive. I had it on the market origina ly
with another company for 3 months to no avail.
Cam’s team was a real pleasure to deal with from day one and we knew our
investment was in safe hands. Thanks again Cam, you are awesome.
which her mother is also part
of.
“The prep . mental, psychological,
excited about. It’s no easy feat, but
you never feel alone,” said Osman.
“And of course, a mum-anddaughter
team is so much more
fun – when we practice together
in the car or the kitchen, it’s great
harmony.
Security call after
Cook’s eyes
gouged and
nose cut off
• By Chris Barclay
VANDALS HAVE cost ratepayers up
to $25,000 after yet another attack on
the statue of Captain James Cook in
Victoria Square.
That is the estimated repair bill from
the two attacks, early on February 14,
and again the following night.
It is the third time Cook’s statue has
been targeted on the anniversary of
his death – he was killed in Hawaii on
February 14, 1779.
During last week’s initial overnight
attack, three of the four sides of the
granite base were daubed with slogans
in red paint proclaiming: ‘Happy Cpt
Cook is Dead Day’, ‘The Crown is
Complicit’ and ‘Landback’.
Tino Rangatiratanga, the Māori
$25K REPAIR BILL FOR STATUE
national flag, was painted on the other.
An individual or the people
responsible also climbed the base and
painted a red cross on Cook’s chest,
then on Thursday night scaffolding put
up the previous day was scaled and his
nose was ground off and his eyes were
gouged.
The repair job’s progress was evident
yesterday, with Cook’s nose clearly
back in place.
Port Hills
fire: Police
speak to
walkers
spotted in
vicinity
• By Sam Sherwood and
Pierre Nixon
POLICE HAVE spoken with two
people seen on a walking track
moments before the Port Hills
fire was noticed, as part of their
investigation into the blaze that
covered more than 650 ha.
More than 100 houses were
evacuated after the fire on the
Port Hills last Wednesday. One
woman lost her “whole life”
after her container home was
destroyed.
Police have said the fire is being
treated as unexplained.
It can now be revealed residents
near Hoon Hay Valley Rd saw two
people around a walking track on
the hill followed by smoke. The
pair then drove off with residents
taking photos of the car and
sending them to the police.
A police spokesperson
confirmed police had spoken to
those people, as well as the ones in
the car.
“Along with several others in
the area, as they appear to be
likely witnesses at this time.”
Controversial intersection won’t be closed
• By Daniel Alvey
A BUSY intersection will
remain open after a close
community board vote sealed
its fate.
The Main South, Riccarton,
and Yaldurst Rds intersection
was recommended for closure
by city council staff, who said it
was a hot-spot for accidents.
“Over the last 10 years there
have been 81 crashes at the
Main South Rd and Yaldhurst
Rd intersection,” city council
transport operations manager
Stephen Wright said.
“Seventy of those involved vehicles
turning right from Main
South Rd and colliding with
vehicles on Riccarton Rd.”
Two people were seriously
injured, including a cyclist.
Wright said.
The contentious topic was
adjourned by the Waipuna
Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board last week
and a special meeting held on
Tuesday.
At Tuesday’s meeting, the
debate lasted for two and a half
hours before a decision was
made.
For the closure was Riccarton
Ward councillor Tyla Harrison-
Hunt, Halswell Ward councillor
Andrei Moore, and Halswell
Ward board member Marie
Pollisco.
Against the closure was
Hornby Ward councillor
Mark Peters, Hornby Ward
board member Henk Bunnk,
Halswell board member Debbie
Mora and board chair Helen
Broughton.
Hornby Ward board member
Sarah Brunton abstained, and
Riccarton Ward board member
Gamal Fouda was absent.
The board received 304
submissions on the proposal, of
which 54 were in favour of the
closure while 71 had concerns
about the closure.
Other measures including
cycle lanes, safe speed platforms
and a signalled pedestrian
crossing at Bush Inn shops will
be put in.
Food vandal busted
Quintin
Swanepoel
A VANDAL who targeted
vehicles and properties on a
St Albans street with fruit and
other foodstuffs for more than
a year has been intercepted by
police and issued with a trespass
notice.
Quintin
Swanepoel,
a Mersey St
resident, was
preparing to
hide in his
vehicle in an attempt
to record
and identify the
individual on
Sunday night,
a last resort to end the bizarre
attacks.
Ultimately, a neighbour
alerted Swanepoel to the individual’s
presence that night and
he contacted police, who arrived
promptly and interviewed the
man under a street light.
Police told Swanepoel the man
offered no explanation for his
behaviour before being issued
with the notice.
Swanepoel recorded the conversation
on his mobile phone
and hoped it marked the end of
regular attacks which spanned
more than a year.
In the latest attack on Valentine’s
Day cream was poured
over the windscreen of his car
and a tray of raw mince was
shoved into a neighbour’s letterbox.
The vandalism typically took
place between 1am and 4am.
“He turned up much earlier
than usual this time,” Swanepoel
said.
“A neighbour texted me
saying he’d spotted him. We
phoned the police, they turned
up very promptly and were extremely
helpful, very kind about
the situation.
“They questioned the man and
he denied it at first. In the end
he did admit he’s been doing it.
He said he had no reason for his
actions. Hopefully this is the
end,” Swanepoel said.
Fatal stab
charges
dropped
• By Anna Leask
CHARGES HAVE been dropped
against the man arrested in
connection with the fatal stabbing
of Anaru Williams in a Hei Hei
park.
Williams was found dead with
stab wounds at Wycola Park in
the early hours of December 22.
A 36-year-old man was found at
the scene and taken into custody.
He later appeared in the district
court in December charged with
assault.
Days later a 31-year-old woman
appeared in court on a charge of
wounding with intent to cause
grievous bodily harm.
Another person was referred to
Youth Aid in relation to the fatal
attack.
Police have said they have not
ruled out further, more serious
charges. The man appeared in
court last Friday and his matter
was “finalised”.
“Police carried out a review
once the investigation was complete
and determined under the
Solicitor General’s Guidelines
the threshold for prosecution had
not been met in this instance,” a
police spokesperson confirmed.
“The charge was therefore
withdrawn.” The 36-year-old has
been granted permanent name
suppression.
Mountain
bike series
cancelled
due to fire
THE PORT Hills fire has
forced the cancellation of
major mountain biking event,
Crankworx Summer Series.
It was to be held at Christchurch
Adventure Park from March 1-3.
However, the fire has put paid
to the event, organisers have announced.
“At this time, the situation
remains in the hands of the fire
service and the full extent of
the impact on the Port Hills,
(Christchurch Adventure Park),
and surrounding areas is yet to
be fully determined,” Crankworx
wrote in a statement on Facebook.
“It is with a heavy heart that we
must announce the complete cancellation
of Crankworx Summer
Series New Zealand for 2024.
Crankworx was “deeply saddened”
by the decision, it said.
Christchurch Adventure Park
general manager Anne Newman
said the decision was “disappointing,
but understandable”.
Staff at the park were “fully
focussed” on preparing the park
to reopen to the public as soon as
possible, she said.
“Police are working through
what they have said, as
investigations are ongoing.”
Senior Sergeant Roy Appley
said police have had a number of
residents come to the base and
advise them about “suspicious
activity” they’ve seen up to and
including on the first fire day.
“So our message to communities,
if you see something happening
in your community and
you’re not sure about it or your
gut feeling tells you that’s not
right, it probably isn’t.
“While I can’t absolutely say
about the cause of the fire yet,
what we do say is that if you’ve
got suspicions about some activity
that you’re concerned about,
please report it to the police as
soon as possible, particularly any
video footage of persons,” Appley
said.
He confirmed a number of people
have already presented video
footage to police.
“(On Tuesday), within a very
short period of about two or
three hours, we had three separate
residents come with good
information and video footage.
‘This latest action crosses the barrier
into really serious damage’ – council
POLITICAL STATEMENT: The statue of Captain James
Cook in Victoria Square was defaced on February 14, the
anniversary of his death in 1779. PHOTOS: CHRIS BARCLAY
• From page 1
The city council posted a
security guard after the second
attack.
Cook’s statue had previously
been targeted on the anniversary
of his death in 2019 and 2022,
while there was also damage
done in June 2020 and August
2022.
Although Cook, who set foot
in New Zealand on October 8,
1769, left a legacy of scientific
and geographical knowledge, he
is also a controversial figure in
terms of enabling British colonialism.
The latest incident has
prompted a call to station
security guards at the landmark
to prevent another costly restoration
job in 2025 and beyond.
Waipapa Papanui-Innes-Central
Community Board member
John Miller now wants measures
to be in place for next year’s anniversary.
“I think it would be worth
having some eyes on it before
the next anniversary. It’s fairly
predictable there’s a good chance
of a fourth attempt happening,”
Miller said, adding the cost of
repairing the statue would outweigh
the cost of security.
“Grinding the nose off and
gouging the eyes is not only
macabre . . . from an art curation
point of view that’s going to cost
us an arm and a leg to repair and
reinstate.
“This latest action crosses the
barrier into really serious damage,
it’s not just applying paint.”
City council acting head of
parks Rupert Bool said the council
was looking into additional
security measures for next year.
He said the repair bill for last
week’s damage ranged between
$15,000 to $25,000 and covered
security, scaffolding, staff labour,
materials and remedial work
undertaken by a heritage conservator.
A water-based paint stripping
product was used to lift the graffiti.
The statue was donated by
bookmaker and philanthropist
Matthew Barnett, and was
shaped from a 12-tonne block of
marble by William Trethewey.
It was unveiled on August 10,
1932 and moved to a more central
location when motor vehicle
traffic on Victoria St stopped
flowing through the square in
1989.
Monuments to Cook have
drawn criticism in the past,
particularly in present-day
Gisborne, where his crew killed
local Māori during an early
interaction at the Turanganui
River.
In 2019, the statue of Cook
on Gisborne’s Titirangi Hill
was relocated downtown to
Tairawhiti Museum following
ongoing protests and vandalism.
Failed project manager’s
home sale attracts offers
DEADLINE SALE: Receivers are reviewing offers on Marc
Findlay and Deborah Jane Robinson-Findlay’s family home
in Ilam, after it was put on the market. Below – the couple
in 2017.
• By Chris Barclay
THE ILAM home at the centre
of a receivership drama for a
failed project manager and his
wife has drawn plenty of interest.
The five-bedroom, three-bathroom
property in Chevron Pl
was put on the market by receivers
Waterstone Insolvency with a
sale deadline of 4pm Tuesday.
It is the family home of Marc
Findlay and Deborah Jane
Robinson-Findlay, who were
both placed into receivership in
December.
Waterstone Insolvency is acting
on behalf of Auckland-based
business finance lender Ignite
Solutions Ltd.
Other unidentified creditors are
involved. Waterstone Insolvency
would not reveal the scale of the
debts incurred by the couple.
Although it had a rateable
value of $1.18 million in August
2022, extensive renovations
were undertaken after a consent
to add two bedrooms and an
ensuite was issued in 2021.
“We have received a number
of offers that the receivers are
currently reviewing,” said Waterstone
Insolvency consultant
Peter Drennan.
Findlay, a sole trading individual
project manager, said he
had not worked for six months, a
factor leading to the home being
sold.
As reported in The Star last
week, Findlay was adjudged
bankrupt in 2017, leaving
Christchurch tradespeople thousands
of dollars out of pocket.
Plumber Darren Maher is
investigating whether he can
lodge a claim for proceeds
from the house sale, claiming
he is owed $65,000 by Findlay
for work carried out in a
Manchester St apartment
complex in 2017.
Family reveals reason for Goldie sale
• By Daniel Alvey
THE FAMILY of late rich-lister
and Mainfreight co-founder Neil
Graham has revealed why they
are selling six paintings by iconic
artist Charles Goldie.
The unique collection of
Māori portraits will be sold
by Auckland auction house
Art+Object on March 25.
Before the paintings are sold
they will be exhibited in the
Christchurch next month.
One of Graham’s sons, Dean
Graham,
said the
paintings are
currently in
an art storage
building.
Dean said
the paintings
were the pride
Dean Graham
of his dad’s art
collection.
“He loved
the Goldies . . . it wasn’t so much
the value of them, it was just the
matter of how amazing they were
to look at.
“He had them all on a wall in
his lounge between his TVs, all
temperature-controlled, with art
lights and alarms.”
Dean said neither he nor his
brother and sister have a place
to do them justice and keep the
paintings protected.
“At our places with kids
and cats, it makes it bloody hard.
So we just figured someone
should enjoy them now and we
can see them enjoy it and get the
thrill of owning them like dad
did.”
Graham, a Christchurch
rich-lister, assembled the pieces
between 2005 and 2013 before he
died in 2015 aged 71.
Goldie, who was considered
the finest painter of kaumātua
and people of importance, died
in 1947 aged 76.
Former Robert McDougall
COLLECTOR: Mainfreight
co-founder Neil Graham
acquired the Goldie
artworks between 2005
and 2013 before he died in
2015.
RECORD: This Goldie
portrait of Te Aho O Te
Rangi, A Noted Waikato
Warrior has a catalogue
price of $2 million to
$3 million ahead of the
auction next month.
and Christchurch Art Gallery
curator and independent art
valuer, Neil Roberts, said there is
potential for the auction to break
records.
“Two or three million
dollars (for a painting) is not
unreasonable. New Zealand,
only in the last decade or so,
has started to get prices past $1
million,” Roberts said.
The prized piece in
the collection, Te Aho O Te
Rangi, A Noted Waikato Warrior,
has a catalogue price of $2-3
million.
Roberts said because multiple
pieces are going up at once,
they are more likely to achieve a
higher sales value compared to
the sale of just one.
Colin McCahon’s 1982
painting holds the current record
for the most expensive New
Zealand artwork which sold for
$2.45m in September 2022.
Last year, one of Goldie’s most
historically significant portraits
Reverie, Ena te Papatahi, a
Ngapuhi Chieftainess, was
repatriated to New Zealand, and
in the process set a new world
auction record for a Goldie at
$1.83 million.
Roberts said it is unlikely
the paintings will be sold to an
overseas buyer with current
regulations in the Antiquities
Act which protect New Zealand
artwork.
Developer calls for his day in court
• By Ric Stevens
PROPERTY developer Dave
Henderson wants to be tried in
a court in front of a jury of his
peers.
Either that, he says, or the
Crown should withdraw charges
hanging over his head for almost
nine years, and which are now in
a legal limbo.
A judge said in 2019 the prosecution
of Henderson for alleged
breaches of the Insolvency Act
was an “astronomical” waste of
taxpayers’ money.
And Henderson is prepared
to go to the Supreme Court to
lay down his challenge to put
him on trial or drop the charges
completely.
“I’m not afraid of the court.
I’m not afraid of going there. I’m
not afraid of a robust hearing,”
Henderson said.
“[I’m] not afraid of any of that
because I know, at the end of
the day, the charges were laid
malevolently.”
Henderson was referring to
charges dating back to the middle
of last decade and which the
Court of Appeal has described as
“relatively trivial in nature”.
In 2015, two representative
charges were filed against Henderson,
alleging he had broken
the law by being involved in
NOT AFRAID: Christchurch property developer David Henderson relaxes at a family cabin
near Queenstown.
the management of a business
while he was an undischarged
bankrupt.
Henderson, who was bankrupted
in 2010 but has since been
discharged, says he had permission
to do that.
In 2016, a further charge was
laid alleging that he made a false
statement about his employment
and income over the previous
years. He denies that too.
Henderson is no stranger to
legal battles with government
agencies and officials.
He was once chased by Inland
Revenue for a supposed tax bill of
nearly $1 million, proving after
a five-year fight and financial
devastation that, in fact, the department
owed him $65,000.
He later bought the Cashel
St building which housed the
Inland Revenue staff who had
pursued him.
He renamed it and for three
years they had to go to work at
Henderson House. When the
lease ran out, he evicted them.
Henderson wrote a book about
his Inland Revenue fight, titled
Be Very Afraid. The book then inspired
a 2007 movie, We’re Here
This report was produced by
Open Justice – Te Pātītī, an
NZME initiative funded by
NZ on Air
to Help, supported by the Film
Commission.
This time, Henderson’s
protagonists are the Official Assignee,
the public servant who
administers the Insolvency Act
within the Ministry of Business,
Innovation and Employment
(MBIE), and Crown Law.
Henderson’s current case
has been described as a
“low-priority” by the Deputy
Solicitor-General and the charges
“relatively trivial” by the Court of
Appeal.
The penalties involve a maximum
jail term of two years, but
other people convicted of similar
offences have typically received
sentences ranging from community
work to home detention.
The case has already eaten
up enormous amounts of court
time. It took 13 hearings over two
years before a district court judge
determined there was sufficient
evidence for a jury to hear.
As the accused, Henderson was
entitled to disclosure – to see the
evidence that Crown Law would
rely on.
over long-delayed insolvency case
Because of his past battles,
there were thousands of documents,
leading to ongoing arguments
and delays.
When the proceedings came
back before Judge Raoul Neave in
the district court in 2019, he said
the case had gone on longer than
it should have.
“The amount of money, taxpayers’
money, that has been wasted
on this case is astronomical,”
Judge Neave said.
In a minute issued shortly after
that, Judge Neave asked Crown
lawyers to reflect on continuing
the prosecution given the “vast
amount of State resources” being
consumed.
But by 2020, the Crown still
believed there was enough
evidence, the prosecution still
had public interest, and the only
reason counting against it was
the time it had taken.
Crown lawyers maintained this
was not their fault.
When the case came back
before Judge Neave, he again said
that “we’ve got better things to be
doing to be quite frank”, but he
would let the case take its course.
He gave the Crown a month
to provide details of the vast
case file to a court-appointed
“amicus” or third-party reviewer.
Then the 2020 Covid lockdown
intervened.
After the lockdown, which had
Revenue, he bought the building housing their offices and
renamed it Henderson House. PHOTO: JOHN MCCOMBE
put even more pressure on the
court system, the Chief Justice
asked prosecutors to consider
whether cases should proceed.
In 2020, the Deputy Solicitor-
General, who at that time was
Brendan Horsley, then stayed the
Henderson proceedings.
This means the charges won’t
come to court, but instead go into
a legal limbo where questions
of guilt or innocence are never
determined.
“They didn’t consult me. If
they had said, ‘we’re either going
to stay these [charges] or we
might have to delay it a few more
months’, I would have said ‘just
delay it a few more months’.
“I want my day in court,”
Henderson said.
“We all know there is a whole,
lame, metaphor that where there
is smoke there’s fire.
“So, everyone is left with a
view that ‘you know, he did do it,
whatever it is, he’s just lucky’.
“I’m not interested in being
lucky. I know my hands are clean
and I want my day in court. Or
withdraw the charges.”
Henderson made an application
to the High Court to have
the stay removed so he could
have that day in court. That
failed, so he took the matter to
the Court of Appeal.
“Mr Henderson seeks to be
tried before a jury of his peers,”
noted the Court of Appeal judgment.
It also turned down his request
to have the stay removed.
It found the public interest, not
the interests of a particular defendant,
is the only “mandatory
consideration” in whether or not
to grant a stay of prosecution.
Henderson said he would now
seek leave to take the matter to
the Supreme Court.
Part of Henderson’s argument
is that the charges were stayed so
the Crown could avoid criticism,
public shaming and embarrassment
about the way the prosecution
had been conducted.
When asked for comment,
Crown Law emailed a statement,
citing the Court of Appeal
judgment which said the appeal
judges were “readily satisfied
there is no proper basis for these
assertions”.
Asked to explain why the
charges were stayed rather than
withdrawn, Crown Law drew
attention to paragraphs in the
judgment which said the Deputy
Solicitor-General and a District
Court judge had found there
was sufficient evidence on which
a properly directed jury could
convict.
The judgment said matters
taken into account in making the
decision to stay the proceedings
included the length of time the
case had taken, the “intervention”
of the Covid-19 pandemic,
stresses on the courts, likely
further delays, the impact on
Henderson, and the “relatively
trivial nature of the charges”.
“There is in our view nothing
to suggest that the Deputy
Solicitor-General failed to take
into account relevant considerations,
or took into account irrelevant
considerations,” the appeal
judges said.
Crown Law added as Henderson
had said he intended to seek
leave to appeal to the Supreme
Court, “we do not propose to
comment any further”.
Districts wary of funding stadium
• By Daniel Alvey
MAYOR PHIL Mauger’s bid for
funding assistance for the $683
million Te Kaha stadium may
not be as easy to secure as he
wants it to be.
Mauger has written to
Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton,
Waimakariri Mayor Dan
Gordon and Environment
Canterbury chair Peter Scott for
help with operational funding,
but not construction costs.
“The city council accepts that
we decided to build the stadium
and will fund its construction,”
the letter says.
But Broughton, who has
previously called for the
discussion to be Canterburywide,
reiterated that in a
responding letter to Mauger.
“We believe this conversation
about the operations of a
regional facility needs to be with
the whole region in the first
instance, rather than just with
Selwyn and Waimakariri.”
Mauger said Selwyn and
Waimakariri were chosen
because they are direct
neighbours to Christchurch.
“Their level of interest will
be crucial in any discussion,
including any potential
discussion at a regional level,”
Mauger said.
“This is only a very early first
step on formal discussions and
TE KAHA: Mayor Phil Mauger has written a letter asking
for Selwyn, Waimakariri and ECan’s help with operational
costs of the new stadium.
does not preclude any other
discussions.”
Mauger is yet to respond to
Broughton’s letter.
No specific numbers are given
in the letter, but 2019 estimates
show without any contribution
from surrounding councils,
Christchurch ratepayers would
be paying $144 on their rates
each year.
Mauger is proposing a joint
funding model similar to
the one for the Canterbury
Museum, which costs Selwyn
ratepayers $37 on their rates bill
annually.
Last year Mauger and city
councillor Sam MacDonald
suggested a levy could be placed
on users of the stadium from
outside of the city.
Broughton said he was open
to receiving the conversational
proposal, but has not committed
to funding it.
“We do not have any funds
currently set aside and have no
plans in our future budgets to
start contributing.”
He said any funding
assistance would be consulted
on with residents.
“Any future decision to
contribute or not also needs
to be put to the community
through proper
consultation to
understand their
desire and ability to
pay. This has been my
commitment to the
Selwyn community
which I have reinforced
every time I have been
asked about the topic,”
Broughton said.
Mauger said Te Kaha is
expected to open in mid-2026
and operational costs are
forecast to start in the 2026-27
financial year.
A Waimakariri District
Council spokesperson
confirmed the letter had been
received and the council would
meet in the coming weeks to
consider it.
“Currently, there is no
funding put aside or anticipated
in our Long Term Plan for this.
Any potential contribution
from Waimakariri District
would need to be subject to full
community consultation before
any decision was made,” the
spokesperson said.
Scott had also received
Mauger’s letter and said ECan
staff were currently
considering it.
“We are waiting for staff
advice to come through,”
Scott said.
“We’re not quite sure
they need us to be the
mechanism to collect the
rate. How far out does that
push? Is it to Kaikoura,
Waimate, Waitaki? We
don’t know.”
Scott agreed with Broughton
about having a regional
discussion.
“I think he’s probably right,
that’s a reasonable view on
that. But what I would say
also is where it’s happened in
other areas it has been capital
regionally rather than operating
expenditure.”
At this stage, all Mauger said
he is asking for is whether the
councils will receive a funding
proposal.
“This is not asking you to
make a binding decision, only
whether you would be willing to
look at options further.”
COURT
First court
appearance
for sport star
• By Anna Leask
A CANTERBURY sports star
accused of dishonestly taking a
vehicle and intentional damage
has appeared in court for the
first time in person since he was
charged.
The man – who listed his occupation
on court documents as
“athlete” – is facing two charges
in the district court.
An interim suppression order
prevents the reporting his name
and any other identifying details.
Supported by a representative
from his sport, he made a brief
appearance before Judge Katie
Elkin.
He has pleaded not guilty to
both charges and has elected a
trial by judge alone.
The sportsman was granted
name suppression when his case
was first called in court last year.
Court documents state on
Wednesday, November 15 - the
day after Cup Day at Addington -
the man allegedly took a $10,000
car from another person.
The charge states he took the
car “dishonestly and without
claim” but not in circumstances
amounting to theft. He is also accused
of intentionally damaging
the car owner’s garage door.
The man was remanded on bail
until his next court date.
A PROMINENT far-right
activist has been sentenced to
community detention with
supervision after he was found
in possession of a prohibited
firearm despite not holding a
firearms licence.
Kyle Chapman, the former
leader of the far-right National
Front white nationalist group,
was arrested following a search
warrant at a Christchurch
address on September 8.
The 52-year-old was charged
with the unlawful possession of
firearms and ammunition.
He was sentenced in the district
court by Judge Tom Gilbert
on Tuesday,
According to the summary
of facts, police found a Norinco
7.62mm rifle stored in the wardrobe
of his bedroom.
He was also in possession of
a 7.62mm magazine, which was
kept in a camo-print bag under
his bed. Three other 7.62mm rifle
rounds, 46 .22 calibre rounds,
three 12-gauge shotgun shells
and two .22 magazines were also
in the bag.
In the garage was a zip-lock
bag containing 82 .22 rounds of
ammunition and one 7.62 round
Chapman avoids jail sentence
over prohibited firearm charges
SENTENCED: Kyle Chapman is a co-founder of the Right
Wing Resistance group.
of ammunition.
In explanation, Chapman told
police the rifle was an airsoft rifle
he was given by a friend who had
since died. He also pleaded guilty
to a charge of failing to comply
with Covid-19 lockdown requirements.
Chapman’s lawyer, Joshua
Grainger, said Chapman had
gotten himself into a situation
over the years of “hoarding many
possessions which he had from
his past”.
With assistance from family,
he has since cleared out his house
to make it a better place for his
responsibilities as a father and he
has pulled back from activism.
He said Chapman was “fairly
self-motivated” in addressing the
needs he had.
Judge Gilbert said there was no
suggestion the firearms he was in
possession of were used or taken
into the public.
Chapman had some previous
convictions but they were from
more than 30 years ago.
“They are now so old that in
my view that can’t have a material
bearing on the sentence I
impose on you today,” Judge
Gilbert said.
The judge had read the
pre-sentence report including
letters from his children and his
partner.
“It’s apparent you’ve been
involved as an activist over the
years for various causes, including,
at times, far-right groups.
“The pre-sentence report says
that you have told the writer that
you have decided to give those
activities away and focus primarily
on your family.”
Judge Gilbert said he would
ordinarily be “somewhat sceptical”,
but the material he had
read did suggest this is what has
happened.
The pre-sentence report writer
said he was at a “low risk of reoffending”.
He sentenced Chapman to
six months of home detention
with supervision. The various
firearms and ammunition would
be forfeited to the Crown.
Chapman earlier posted on
Facebook that he “got raided and
arrested”.
“Thank (sic) a miracle from
God I was not held in custody.
But I am looking at jail in the
future.”
COURT 15
Rapist allowed to
appeal verdict at
Supreme Court
• By Tara Shaskey
A MAN who continues to claim
sexsomnia made him rape a woman who
was passed out after a night of drinking
has been given the green light to have his
case heard by the Supreme Court.
Damin Peter Cook is currently behind
bars after a jury rejected he was asleep
or unconscious at the time of the 2019
offending.
Cook, who is in his mid-40s, argued at
trial that he has no memory of the incident
and that he suffers sexsomnia, a type of
parasomnia or movement disorder that
occurs during sleep.
In September 2022, he was sentenced in
the district court to eight years in prison
on one charge of sexual violation by unlawful
sexual connection and one charge
of sexual violation by rape.
Both convictions relate to the sexual
assault of a woman three years prior. Cook
had been partying with the victim
one evening in September 2019
at a house in Christchurch. She
had passed out in a bedroom and
around 7am, she was woken by
Cook who was having sex with her.
The woman was afraid and
pretended to be asleep but, shortly
after, she left the bedroom and told
a friend what happened, and the
police were alerted.
Last year, Cook took his case to
the Court of Appeal, challenging
his convictions and sentence.
While his appeal against conviction
was dismissed, his sentence was
quashed and replaced with a jail term of
seven years after the appeal court found
the sentencing judge’s starting point was
too high.
Cook has now turned to the Supreme
Court to have another go at having his
convictions overturned.
On Monday, the Supreme Court – the
court of last resort – released a judgment
granting his application for leave to appeal
the Court of Appeal’s ruling.
The judgment stated the Supreme Court
would consider whether the Court of Appeal
was correct to treat Cook’s defence as
insane automatism.
According to the Court of Appeal decision,
the trial judge’s directions to the jury
applied the law as held by the Court of Appeal
from the earlier, relevant case of Tony
Damin
Peter Cook
This report was produced by
Open Justice – Te Pātītī, an
NZME initiative funded by
NZ on Air
Paraire Cameron, from Rotorua.
In that case, the court held Cameron’s
sexsomnia was a form of insane
automatism.
“As a result, the defendant had the
burden of showing that he suffered from
a disease of the mind to the extent that he
did not understand the nature and quality
of his act.”
But the court did not hold that sexsomnia
generally is insane automatism and
stated the classification depends on the
evidence in the particular case.
Cook submitted to the trial judge that
the Cameron case was wrongly decided
and that he should not follow it.
He wanted the judge to rule
that sexsomnia is a form of sane
automatism.
“That would mean that, where
there is an evidential foundation
for the defence, it would be for the
Crown to exclude the reasonable
possibility that a defendant acted
without conscious volition.”
But the trial judge followed the
Cameron case, as he was bound to
do, the Court of Appeal decision
stated.
The court was ordinarily bound
by its earlier decisions and would
only depart from them in rare cases where
there was cogent reason to do so.
At the appeal, Cook’s counsel repeated
submissions that the Cameron case was
wrongly decided and that Cook’s convictions
should be quashed accordingly.
But the Court of Appeal said it had no
reason to depart from the Cameron case
and dismissed the appeal against conviction.
“The issue of whether sexsomnia can be
a form of sane automatism or insanity was
central to the Court’s decision,” the decision
stated.
“The Court conducted a review of the
common law history of the defences of
sane automatism and insanity. The Court’s
analysis was orthodox and did not result
in a radical or striking change to the law.”
A date is yet to be set for Cook’s appeal.
FOREIGN BODY
IN thE EYE
Recently Steve saw a cool 10 month old
hearding dog called Kip with a swollen
bulging right eye. Kip had been treated
by his primary veterinarian for this eye
issue 2 months before Steve saw Kip.
Being a valuable working dog, it was very
important Kip didn’t lose sight in this eye,
so Kip was referred to Steve.
Clinically Kip was working normally. His
owner noticed he was struggling to eat
comfortably, had gone off dry food and
was shying away from anything near
the right side of his face. His oral cavity
and teeth were all normal. His eye was
inflamed and there was a crusty bloody
discharge seen. His cornea was normal.
Richard Lucy ultrasounded the eye and
suspected a foreign body, most probably
a grass seed.
Steve then anaesthetised Kip and went
in surgically, saw a draining sinus tract
at the inside cornea of his eye- the tract
travelled up between the eye and orbital
rim. Steve probed with a long pair of
curved forceps and removed a large
barley grass awn. Hugely satisfying and a
fantastic outcome for Kip.
Kip stayed a few days in our hospital. One
morning the hospital nurse came in and
found Kip on the top of our kennels. A
“ never seen before “ moment and there
have been
thousands of
dogs through
the kennels.
Being an agile,
young working
dog, Kip was
obviously great
at jumping
vertically from
a standstill. No
harm was done
and Kip was
pleased to hop
down and be
fed.
NEWS
Mosquito warning issued
after warmer weather
gives boost to breeding
• By Dylan Smits
DANGEROUS exotic
mosquitoes’ ability to breed in
Lyttelton is increasing due to
climate change.
After a hot summer, residents
are being urged to check their
properties for potential mosquito
breeding habitats due to the close
proximity of homes to the port.
“If exotic mosquitoes were to
sneak through, breed, and infect
people, the results could be disastrous.
The diseases they carry
cause severe illness and can be
fatal,” said Dr Matt Reid, medical
officer of health for the National
Public Health Service.
Health protection officers monitor
the area around the port for
evidence of foreign mosquitoes,
particularly those which could
threaten public health.
Serious diseases like malaria,
dengue fever, and Ross River
fever can be carried into New
Zealand by tropical mosquito
types like aedes and anopheles,”
said Reid.
“With climate change potentially
making our environment
more comfortable for these
mosquitoes, an outbreak could
have significant cost implications
for the health system, and
eradication campaigns can cost
millions.”
PREVENTION: All Lyttelton
residents are being asked
to empty collections of
stagnant water on their
property to prevent exotic
mosquito breeding.
All Lyttelton residents are being
asked by the NPHS to check
their property for collections
of stagnant water which can be
attractive breeding grounds for
mosquitoes.
“Mosquitoes struggle in the
cold but with the recent warm
weather, areas of stagnant and
pooled water can be perfect
breeding grounds.”
Reid said residents should
empty out any plant pots,
buckets, tins, jars and other items
that may hold water.
Boats, dinghies, and kayaks
should also be turned upside
down regularly to prevent pooling
water.
Reid said this notice is based
around prevention as he is not
aware of any exotic mosquitoes
being discovered at the port.
months in Christchurch before
ending in June 2023.
The scheme reduced an adult
single fare zone in Christchurch
to $1.30 with a MetroCard, or
$2.10 cash.
Other centres around the
country phased out half price
fares last year, including in both
Auckland and Wellington where
it was wrapped up in July and
September, respectively.
The study found almost half of
participants were able to afford
additional trips, with more than
a third able to spend money on
food and other essentials as a
result.
Dr Angela Curl, a senior
lecturer at Otago’s department
of population health, said research
found those experiencing
“transport poverty” benefited in
terms of accessibility and easing
financial stress.
“We know that public housing
residents, including those in our
study, experience transport difficulties
related to affordability
and accessibility, with Statistics
New Zealand figures showing the
lowest income households spend
more than a quarter of their incomes
on transport,” she said.
“Our findings show that for
many who live in public housing,
access to reduced fares on public
transport reduces their financial
stress, gives them the ability to
get to places they need, removes
anxiety, and improves their wellbeing
and social contact.”
Participants were asked about
awareness, use and impact of half
price bus fares.
Transport Fares - A Research
2022, showed bus patronage in
Christchurch and Wellington
matched 2019 rates, but largely
remained below pre-Covid-19
levels even since the introduction
of half-price fares.
But the report said people who
already relied on public transport
were benefiting from cheaper
fares by saving money and
choosing to travel more often.
In the Otago University study,
45 per cent of public housing respondents
stated half price fares
had allowed them to make a trip
they would otherwise have been
unable to take, compared to 16
per cent of other respondents.
Thirty-six per cent said they
had been able to spend money on
other things such as food due to
cheaper fares, compared to 8 per
cent of other participants.
THE GROUND-breaking
Climate Action Campus will
have its lease and scope extended
despite opposition from residents
concerned about the state of the
red zone component.
The campus, which occupies
the old Avonside Girls’ High
School site and 1.8 hectares
of red zone land bordered by
Cowlishaw and Patten Sts, can
stay for another three years
providing upkeep issues are
addressed.
When the lease extension
application was advertised,
city council staff received two
complaints from neighbours
unhappy about a BMX track
being added to the campus.
They were also upset about the
deteriorating appearance of the
area.
One resident of 36 years in
the area described the red zone
site as an eye sore with broken
wooden pallets, plastic chairs
and rubbish strewn over the area.
They had noticed a “dramatic
decline” in the appearance and
wellbeing of the area since the
campus opened in 2021, claiming
planted gardens were overgrown
with weeds.
Former mayor Vicki Buck, a
driving force behind establishing
the campus, said the BMX track
had been removed but
disputed claims the
red zone land was in
disrepair.
“For a very brief time
there was a bike track and
it wasn’t quite far enough
from residents so we’ve
taken it away,” she said.
“Kids look after the
gardens and they do like to
build huts. There might have
been a broken pallet but they’re
definitely not there now.
“What we’ve got in
mind, and what we’re
doing here, is so much
bigger than two residents
complaining about some
weeds.”
The new lease
conditions also allow the
campus, which is officially
part of Ao Tawhiti Unlimited
Discovery in the central city, to
add beehives and hut building to
its educational programme.
A community solar farm may
be added in the future.
“The concept of it is kids come
here to take action on climate
change with their teachers,” Buck
said.
“A lot of the kids enjoy
growing vegetables, horticulture,
composting, all those sorts of
things.
“This is about environmental
concerns, this is about
environmental education and
taking action on climate change.”
A council report said the
lease would be approved on the
basis the issues raised will be
addressed ongoing, particularly
around rubbish and the general
upkeep and appearance of the
area.
Campus staff did agree to
be more vigilant in removing
broken pallets plus increase site
maintenance and sweeps for
rubbish. The campus, which
is used on a daily basis and is
believed to be the first of its
kind in Australasia, originally
involved eight schools but the
number has now ballooned to 23
educational institutions.
Merivale
bridges
replaced
TWO BRIDGES in Merivale will
be demolished and rebuilt, as the
structures have reached the end of
their design life.
The bridges at Poynder Ave and
Garden Rd will be rebuilt to new
structural standards.
Works start on March 4 with
each bridge expected to take
about four months to complete.
The Poynder Ave bridge will be
built first.
City council transport planning
and delivery manager Jacob
Bradbury said the bridges have
reached the end of their design
life and need to be upgraded for
safety reasons.
“We appreciate this project will
be disruptive to nearby residents
and to road users, but we are aiming
to minimise this by doing one
bridge at a time,” he said.
“Our contractors will be doing
their best to have these works
completed as quickly as possible,
but there will be increased trucks
and machinery in the area while
the works are going on.”
The design for the new
bridges includes the addition of
pedestrian footpaths.
Another Jack looms large in
the Crusaders set-up
SCHOOL STAR: Liam Jack in action in his Christ’s College days.
• By Sam Coughlan
YOUNG LOCK Liam Jack is
following in the footsteps of
his father and uncle – he is
on a pathway to becoming a
Crusader.
Liam is the son of former
Crusader Graham Jack, who
made four appearances in the
victorious 1998 season and
played 21 times for Canterbury,
and nephew of Chris Jack who
played more than 100 times for
the Crusaders and earned 67
caps for the All Blacks.
Liam, 19, who toured the UK
and Ireland with the Crusaders
during their pre-season matches
against Munster and Bristol, and
played against the Highlanders
in Methven last week, said it was
an ‘awesome experience’.
“It was cool to be a part of that
environment, with all the professionals
and stuff like that.
“Yeah, they’re really friendly
and really inviting in that space.
It was really cool to see how they
did things.”
He said it was a goal to follow
in his father’s and uncle’s
footsteps.
“Yeah, it’s pretty cool to hopefully
have the same experience as
they did one day with putting on
the same jersey as them.”
Graham said Liam had worked
hard to be where he’s at.
“He’s put in a huge amount of
work to get there.
“It’s a factor of years of work
through his schooling, and a lot
of support from a lot of different
coaches over the years.
This is Liam’s second year
in the academy and he juggles
his rugby commitments with
academics – he is studying a
Batchelor of Architecture at Ara.
“It takes quite a bit of communicating
between the managers
of the academy and the the tutors
at Ara,” he said.
“But you can get around it
pretty easy and just get a good
schedule going and things go
pretty smoothly after that.”
Liam only found out he was
travelling to the UK two days
before the team left - which lead
to a bit of a mad rush.
“Yeah, it was a quick turnaround,”
he said.
“Had to get a passport sorted,
which was good fun.”
He said he leans on his dad
and uncle for advice often.
“Having them there to help
me when I need it, yeah. They’re
pretty open to helping me out
PHOTO: MARTIN HUNTER
and always there for me if I need
it.
“When he (Graham) did his
thing with the Crusaders he was
doing full time work being an
engineer, so he had that balance
real nailed down between the
two, and he’s able to help me out
with just trying to get my study
last week. Below, Liam’s
make a rugby career.”
Graham agreed and said he
tries to stay out of the way when
it comes to proper coaching.
“I don’t really get too involved
in the technical side. I just talk
more at a level about what he’s up
to, and show an interest, but I’m
not really that active in what he’s
doing day to day.”
Graham said he’s very proud of
his son’s achievements so far.
“To see your kids succeed in
whatever they’re choosing to
pursue is very exciting and it
just happens to be something
that myself and my brother had
previously been a part of, so that
makes it pretty cool as well.”
‘Tough’ final likely for
Burnside and Park
• By Sam Coughlan
BURNSIDE WEST Uni are
looking to avenge last year’s
loss in the Christchurch Metro
premier one-day competition
final when they face Lancaster
Park on Sunday.
It is Burnside’s third final in
as many years, after winning the
trophy in 2022 but losing to Old
Boys Collegians last season.
Captain Matt Hay said the
team isn’t worrying about what
happened last year.
“We’ve got quite a young
group and guys are just really
excited, more so about this
weekend rather than worrying
too much about last year, just
excited to be in the final again,
have it at home – looking
forward, I suppose, rather than
looking back.”
By virtue of topping the table
in the round-robin stage, the
final will be held at Burnside
Park. Hay said it was a big bonus
for the team.
“The guys really enjoy playing
at Burnside because it probably
is the biggest ground on the
circuit too, so yeah it’s nice to be
at home.
“We’ve got a good club, obviously
good facilities and it’s just
nice to be in a familiar place,
and for our members and stuff
to come down and watch and
enjoy Burnside Park.”
In Burnside’s 2022 victory,
they beat Lancaster Park in the
final, but Park captain Angus
Hamilton said there’s no bad
blood.
“It’s not really something we
speak about too much with the
group, I guess.
“You never really need any
extra motivation for a final, but I
guess it’d definitely be nice to be
going back.”
Hamilton was there when
Lancaster Park last won the
competition in 2019, and played
in the 2022 final loss.
He said he would try to help
less experienced players who
hadn’t played finals before.
“Just trying to pass on to the
younger guys, not to shy away
from the occasion.
“It’s obviously a pressure-filled
match and it can be easy to get
overwhelmed by it a bit and go
into your shell.”
Lancaster Park beat Burnside
when the two teams met in the
round robin, and Hamilton said
they could take confidence from
that result.
“It was a pretty tight game and
I guess probably the last couple
of times before that, we’ve gotten
into a similar situation and
not been able to get across the
line, like in the final a couple of
years ago.”
Both teams respect each
other’s quality.
Said Hamilton: “They’ve
(Burnside) got a really strong
side, they’re really well balanced.
“They’ve got good seamers,
good spin options, especially
in one day cricket, and they bat
pretty deep.
“So you’re always aware, even
if they’re sitting right down
there, you’ve still got to stay on
the ball to make sure you knock
them off.”
Hay heaped praise on Lancaster
Park’s team as well.
“They’ve got some matchwinners
through their line up,
and are a very good competitive
side,” he said.
“You know that they’re always
up for a contest and a fight, so
I think it’s gonna be a really,
really good, tough game on
Sunday.”
The first ball at Burnside Park
will be bowled at 10.30am.
Huyser joins 300 club
• By Sam Coughlan
BURNSIDE WEST Uni veteran
Carl Huyser has become only
the second person to play 300
premier matches for the club.
Huyser last week joined
former fast bowler Scott Inglis,
who took the most wickets for
Burnside in their history with
614, including best figures of
9/49.
Huyser signed up with
Burnside in 2008 after moving
to Christchurch from South
Africa, and has become their
third-highest run-scorer,
behind Jack Kerr and Brian
Hastings. He assisted the team
in winning three trophies – the
50 over competition in 2018
and 2022, and the two-day
competition last year.
When asked about his
achievements, he downplayed
them.
“For me, the things that are
special are more the friendships
you make and the connections
and the people you play with,”
he said.
Under Huyser’s captaincy in
2018 the club took their first
trophy in 27 years, winning the
one-day competition. He was
captain from 2017–2021. Last
year he helped the team to their
first two-day title since 1991.
Huyser said those
were the most special
moments from his 16
seasons at Burnside.
“I think that meant
a lot to me and to the
club,” he said.
Huyser now coaches
the premier team as
well as opening the
batting, and says he
loves giving back to
the club.
“When I came fresh off the
boat, the club certainly helped
me find my belonging in New
Zealand and just find a community.
“I still feel like I’m giving
back to the club because the
club’s given me so much, for
sure.”
Harness
racing
chief
resigns
HARNESS RACING New
Zealand chief executive Gary
Woodham has resigned, citing
health issues.
Woodham suffered a medical
event while working at the HRNZ
headquarters at Addington
Raceway last April and underwent
surgery.
He subsequently took an
extended period of medical leave
before announcing his decision
to stand down from the role last
week.
“I have recently experienced
challenging health issues and
have decided to resign to focus on
recovery and spending time with
my family,” Woodham said via a
statement on the HRNZ website.
Woodham, a lifelong harness
racing fan who has been heavily
involved in owning, breeding and
racing a number of horses, started
his Addington Raceway-based
tenure in January 2021.
“As well as spending more
time with my family, work-wise
I will be looking to step into
more mentoring and directorship
positions in the near future,” he
said.
Mauro Barsi, HRNZ’s chief
operating officer, will also serve
as acting chief executive until a
replacement for Woodham is appointed.
The recruitment process
gets under way soon.
HRNZ chair Phil Holden
thanked Woodham for his service.
“Gary’s made a meaningful and
long lasting contribution to our
sport and while it’s never easy
making decisions like he has, we
wish him all the best for this new
chapter in his life,” he said.
Woodham’s announcement
follows the departure of another
key member of the HRNZ
McDonald, who joined HRNZ
wEEK EIGhT: 3 weeks to go!
You are now nearing the peak of your preparation.
Congratulations if you are still following the
programme and you have been able to do most of
the sessions. This means that it is more likely that
you will make it to the start line in good condition.
If you have not been able to follow the programme
or if you have only followed it half-heartedly you
need to adjust your goals and be prepared to jogwalk
the event all the way at an easy pace. You will
get there but it will take a bit longer.
Over the next couple of weeks, you need to
become comfortable with your training pace.
Get a good feel for it because that is the pace you
will need to do for the event if you want to finish
comfortably. If you go faster than your training
pace you risk injury or you will struggle over the
last few kilometres. The weekend run is close to
the time you will be on your feet on the day of the
event. This is a key session. Try not to miss any
of the sessions over the coming 2 weeks or do at
least 3 sessions per week. If you do only 1 or 2 you
might lose some of your hard gained fitness and
To achieve this goal
you need to develop
some awareness around
the basic requirements
of exercising for health and
fitness. First and foremost this has to
do with 3 key principles:
1. How often do you train? To improve your
level of health and fitness you will need to
aim for 4 sessions per week. 2 or 3 sessions
per week will only maintain what you have
and 1 session per week is definitely not
sufficient.
2. How long are your sessions? The
duration of your sessions will generally
build towards between 30 and 50 minutes
with one longer session of 60-120 minutes.
3. What is the right intensity to train at?
The good thing about the programme
is that all your runs will be done at
submaximal pace, also called conversation
pace. That means a pace where you can still
talk. If you can’t talk you are going too fast
and you are likely to come to a grinding halt
sooner or later.
This programme and accompanying information are
written as a guide only. If you are concerned about
your health at any stage please undergo a health
check with your GP.
TIP OF ThE wEEK
If your feet are sore and aching roll your
feet over a frozen drink bottle after your
run, it can do wonders. If your shoes are
worn this is the time to replace them so
you can still “run them in”. If the shoes feel
good stick to the same brand and model.
Most specialised sport shoe shops have
personnel trained in advising people on
the right shoe wear. You can also ask a
podiatrist. Sports Clinic have a great team
of experienced podiatrists who can help.
IN THE FAMILY: Alistair Hunt is relishing playing alongside son Lachie for
Elmwood in the men’s premier tennis interclub competition.
‘Real privilege’ to
share court with son;
comp in full swing
• By Diane Keenan
FORMER DAVIS Cup player and captain
Alistair Hunt is loving playing alongside
son Lachie for his home club Elmwood
in the men’s premier tennis interclub
competition.
Hunt, 51, and Lachie, 18, were part of
Elmwood’s close win against Bishopdale
on Saturday, with Lachie back on court
the following day for the Elmwood’s division
1 team, winning both his singles and
doubles where he teamed up with another
Davis Cup veteran Glenn Wilson.
“It was pretty special watching Glenn
coaching and encouraging Lachie, who
is always really open to advice on court,”
said Hunt. He was on the sideline
with his father, and Lachie’s grandfather,
Colin.
Hunt, who at the peak of his career was
ranked 184 in the world, is now based
in Arrowtown and has concentrated on
coaching instead of playing competitive
tennis in recent years.
His son’s enthusiasm for the game has
seen them team up for doubles at a number
of tournaments over summer.
“If I can continue to play well, I would
like to keep competing with him in
interclub and tournaments,” said Hunt,
renowned for his formidable serve and
devastating backhand when he played on
the international tour in the 1990s.
“It’s actually a real privilege to be on
court with Lachie. He got into the game
relatively late which is probably my fault,
but I did not want to be a parent who
put pressure their child to play and succeed.
“It is all coming from him. He’s totally
driven and working really hard.”
Elmwood has home court advantage on
Saturday against Burnside Park, who lost
1-5 to competition leader Cashmere at the
weekend.
For the first time this season all three
Meredith brothers were playing for unbeaten
Cashmere.
Burnside Park’s Emilio Gonzaga, who
won the recent Canterbury secondary
schools’ singles championship, was his
team’s only winner.
Points
Men
Cashmere 56, Bishopdale 39,
Women
Elmwood 56, Te Kura Hagley 41,
Cashmere 39, Bishopdale 37,
Waimairi 25, Shirley 11.
Cashmere this week play on its home
courts against Edgeware Waimairi, who
had the luxury of Paddy Ou and Nic Jenkins
in the top slots last weekend.
Edgeware Waimairi scored maximum
points against Te Kura Hagley, who line
up against second-placed
Bishopdale.
In the women’s competition
Cashmere also plays
at home against Edgeware
Waimairi.
Cashmere’s top player
Ruby Young is in top
Ruby
Young
form, last week beating
Elmwood’s Abby Mason
in three sets in a highly
anticipated match that produced excellent
tennis from both players.
Elmwood remains unbeaten this season
and will play the young Bishopdale team,
who were soundly beaten last week by Te
Kura Hagley, the big mover on the points
table. Te Kura Hagley’s experienced lineup
looks assured of making the playoffs.
It is a reversal of form from the first
round where, with only two of the roundrobin
games played due to cancellations, it
did not make the top four.
Te Kura Hagley’s highly ranked players
took the disappointment in their stride
and captain Beth Williamson is delighted
with her team’s performance this year.
“We are now into the full swing of this
round, all loving our tennis, hitting a lot
more and definitely turning in more consistent
performances,” she said.
Te Kura’s Adele Orangi is close to
achieving her 100th win in premier tennis,
and this week her side plays Shirley away.

Which players would make the
ultimate Crusaders line-up?
With the countdown to the
kickoff of Super Rugby Pacific
2024 tomorrow, Jaxon Daniels
delves into the archives to
curate the Crusaders ultimate
XV over the decades
CAPTAIN FANTASTIC: Legendary Crusaders captain Richie McCaw runs
into heavy traffic against the Highlanders. PHOTOS: GETTY IMAGES
1. Wyatt Crockett: The Super Rugby
appearance leader and only double
centurion. Crockett will go down as one
of the great props of all time.
2. Codie Taylor: Always reliable, third
on the Crusaders’ try-scoring list and
topping the try-scoring forwards in New
Zealand cements Taylor as the hooker in
my team.
3. Owen Franks: A scrummaging
maestro, Franks would go on to represent
the team 154 times, scoring a whopping
three meat pies.
4. Sam Whitelock: The All Blacks’
record appearance holder is second in the
Crusaders games played list, 19 games shy
of 200. A real workhorse who played at a
world-class level up until departing the
side in 2023.
5. Todd Blackadder: First Crusaders
Hall of Fame inductee and captain of
the back-to-back-to-back title-winning
Crusaders at the turn of the century.
6. Reuben Thorne: Captained the
Crusaders to a perfect 2002 season and
won seven titles along the way.
7. Richie McCaw (c): Widely considered
the Goat, McCaw was seemingly the
captain and first name on every team
sheet he was ever eligible for. A leader
of men and true representation of
Canterbury rugby.
8. Kieran Read: Third on the all-time
appearance list for the franchise, Read
will always be considered one of the great
Crusaders leaders.
9. Justin Marshall: The first-ever
Crusaders centurion and second
Crusaders Hall of Fame inductee shows
why he is considered one of the best nines
to play the game.
10. Dan Carter: All-time Super Rugby
and international points leader... need I
say anything else? The greatest 10 to ever
lace up the boots.
11. Caleb Ralph: Owner of the
Crusaders try-scoring record and record
for most consecutive games played in
Super Rugby at 104.
TALL TIMBER: Sam Whitelock
played more than 180 games for
the Crusaders.
12. Aaron Mauger: Slotting into the 12
jersey for the Crusaders, Mauger’s finesse
with his feet and ability to read the game
made him an all-time Crusader.
13. Robbie Fruean: Somewhat of a cult
hero, Fruean brought immense speed and
power to the Crusaders backline.
14. Sevu Reece: Only six tries shy of the
all-time Crusaders record with 46 in less
than half the appearances of the record
holder says enough.
15. Leon MacDonald: The physical
MacDonald, known as “Rangi”, provided
a great kicking game and was a major
factor in the Crusaders success in the
early 2000s.
Coach: Scott “Razor” Robertson:
Earned his shot at the big job by leading
the Crusaders to their greatest era of titles.
Honourable mentions: Andrew
Mehrtens, Rico Gear, Israel Dagg, Chris
Jack, Brad Thorn, Greg Sommerville,
Mark Hammett, Nemani Nadolo, Ryan
Crotty, Luke Romano, Richie Mo’unga,
Norm Berryman.
THE GREATEST: Dan Carter gets the nod at No 10 in the ultimate
Crusaders XV selection.

says he is drawing a “line in
ahead of his side’s opening Super
“The Chiefs are touting it as a
bit of a grudge match, a bit of a
rematch of the final,” he said.
“We’re not going there because
this is a new season, a new
When money is tight there are
simple and budget friendly decorating
ideas that can create an inspiring and
welcoming home.
Before you start worrying about
what you can afford to buy, take the
opportunity to provide a clean slate
for the room you want to update. By
removing dated, worn or damaged
items there will be more space for you
to be creative.
Make the most of the furniture you do
have. A simple way to change the look
of your room without spending any
money is to shift your furniture around
to change the focus and proportions of
the space.
If a new couch is not in your budget,
disguise your dated one with a slipcover
for a fresh new look. Buying used and
pre-loved pieces of furniture is a great
way to save and you never know what
hidden gems you will stumble upon at
a thrift store or market that will fit in
within your space.
A bookcase or side table can be given
more personality by placing some of
your favourite pieces together and
display in groups. It could be a cup and
saucer that you love or a photo that
just needs a frame. Wallpaper could be
added to the interior of a bookcase for
an eclectic look. Another option is to
stack your books according to colour
throughout or spruce things Christchurch
up with some new
bookends.
An old wooden ladder sitting in your
garage could be your next favourite
Decorating on a budget
– reuse and recycle
décor piece. Clean with sandpaper and
maybe add a coat of paint, then use it as
extra storage or to house plants inside
or outside.
With a little imagination, you can
make a tired side or coffee table feel
brand new. Consider painting the edge
of a simple black piece in gold, for
instance. If you have an old kitchen
chair that no longer fits in with the rest
of your décor, repurpose it as a bedside
table. Again a fresh coat of paint will
make it work in the new setting.
