Residents likely to ignore Sail GP road closure
• By Dylan Smits
RESIDENTS WHO use
Governors Bay Rd say they
will drive through a road block
during SailGP, rather than take a
significant detour to reach their
homes.
One resident who lives near
Sandy Bay, off Governors Bay Rd,
said she will ignore attempts to
stop her passage.
“Oh blow them, they’ve got no
right to stop me,” she said.
She and other residents who
intend to ignore the closure live
on the eastern side of Governors
Bay, close to the Dyers Pass Rd
turn-off where the road block
will be located.
SailGP told residents in a letter
they would, like last year, need
to detour through Lyttelton and
drive the long way along Governors
Bay Rd to reach their homes.
The letter said Governors Bay
Rd would become a one-way road
for residents with a valid entry
pass from Lyttelton between
noon and 6pm on March 23 and
24.
Resident David Gregory also
said he is likely to ignore the
closure.
“It seems illogical to allow
access to your home from one
direction, but not from the other
direction,” he said.
“The purpose of this seems
obscure.”
Governors Bay Rd resident
Vix-Creag McCulloch said it was
frustrating last year not being able
to access their homes from both
directions, despite having passes.
She said it was bad event management
for residents who lived
on the closed part of Governors
Bay Rd.
“To be able to show the traffic
wardens your pass, your rates
notice and point to your house
and then told to find a park and
walk there was very infuriating,
especially with a damaged knee.”
Paddling pupils’
Sunday fun-day
on the Estuary
• By Dylan Smits
A FLOTILLA of paddleboards
and kayaks were a
noticeable addition to the Avon-
Heathcote Estuary on
Sunday, as Te Raekura
Redcliffs School held its
second Paddle to Kura.
The outing was
organised by school
parents, Darren Fidler
and Abby Moore, as
a way of connecting
families in the school
community.
Nick
Leith
Pupils left the Christchurch
Yacht Club at 2pm with their
parents and paddled about
1.5km to the Beachville Rd jetty
opposite the school.
Said principal Nick
Leith: “We’re extremely
fortunate to have such a
strong connection to the
resources in our local
area and community.”
Leith said the event
made the most of
school’s unique coastal
location.
“And if you could just clip his nails….”
Nail Clipping for Pets - Pampering Pedicure or Torturous Trim…
As veterinarians, we often find ourselves
balancing the importance of medical
treatment with the emotional wellbeing
of our furry patients. A common
example of this delicate balance is nail
trimming.
This seemingly benign request that
can be quick and simple to perform in
a well-trained pet, can also strike fear
into the hardiest of vets and nurses,
as we realise that nail trimming can
be a significant source of stress and
anxiety for many animals making it
a challenging procedure to carry out
effectively.
Nail care is an important aspect of
pet health. When nails are kept at the
proper length, it allows our pets to move
around freely and maintain their natural
gait. Long nails can push the toes up or
to the side, changing the conformation and mechanics
of the feet and legs, they can also be more likely to
become torn or cracked. Whilst it is important to keep
our pets’ nails trimmed to prevent these problems, nail
trimming is almost never an urgent matter.
Elective procedures should be carried out in a way
that preserves the relationship between the veterinary
team and the patient. Heavy-handed restraint should
never be used as this can exacerbate the stress and
anxiety experienced by our pets. It also risks physical
injury to the animal or people handling them. For
many patients, nail trimming is or has been a traumatic
experience (for example a nail being cut to the quick,
causing pain) and this association can carry over into
other aspects of veterinary care if not handled properly.
Just as people have varying sensitivities to touch, so do
our pets. We encourage pet owners to take the time to
gradually condition their pets to accept
handling of their feet and nail trimming
at home. This can involve gentle
handling, distraction with treats, and
introducing the sensation of touch and
use of equipment that feels different
on their paws gradually. Alternative
options for keeping nails short are also
available. These include scratch boards
which dogs can be trained to use at
home.
If a pet is particularly sensitive to nail
trimming or refuses to tolerate it despite
gentle handling, we may recommend
medical treatment with anxietyreducing
medications or a degree of
sedation. Our goal is always to carry out
the procedure safely and effectively,
without causing unnecessary stress to
the animal.
At Kowhai Vet, we are committed to providing
compassionate and thoughtful care to all our
patients. We understand that even routine procedures
like nail trimming require careful consideration and
a personalised approach. Our team is dedicated
to ensuring that every pet leaves our clinic feeling
comfortable, cared for, and ready to face the world
with their best paw forward.
Work scheduled for Cave Tce
• By Dylan Smits
STABILISATION work will
start on a Redcliffs hillside in
mid to late March to address
erosion.
The complaints of nearby
residents are being addressed
after years of them voicing
concerns about slips on the
slope above Cave Tce.
Malcolm Fraser, who lives on
Moncks Spur Rd, has to drive
up Cave Tce to reach his home.
He said vegetation and debris
falling onto the road has caused
difficulties in the past after bad
weather.
“You’ve got all this rubbish
hanging and falling onto the
roadway and it’s fairly narrow
already.”
Fraser said he has been
complaining to the city council
for the past 25 years, trying to
get the slope maintained more
regularly.
“All they do is clean up the
slips and not address the issue.”
He said city council
contractors usually attend to the
area annually, but only when
prompted by residents.
City streets maintenance
manager Steve Guy said the
issues around slips are being
addressed and a contractor
has recently been selected for
stabilisation work.
EROSION: Residents on Moncks Spur Rd say stabilisation
work is need to prevent slips on Cave Tce (above). The city
council is planning to start work in the coming weeks.
“The contractor will be
establishing the site and setting
up traffic management in the
coming weeks.”
He said construction is
expected to take three weeks.
Blair Quane also lives on the
Moncks Spur Rd and has dealt
with the slips.
“When we get a period of
sustained rainfall, we lose part
of the bank down onto the road,
which has meant we need to
drive around or through it.”
For the duration of the
construction, Cave Tce will be a
one-way road at times.
The stabilisation will involve
removing existing vegetation
and sculpting the slope to
provide an even surface for
Geofabric installation, Guy said.
Geofabric will be installed to
provide a protective layer and
prevent erosion.
Guy said the slope will be
hydroseeded and watered and
monitored regularly for seed
growth.
Hydroseeding is a mix of
seeds, mulch, fertiliser and
water. It can be used to rapidly
establish a vegetation cover to
protect exposed soil from sheet
and erosion.
Fraser also wants the
vegetation maintained more
regularly to lower fire risk.
“The hanging grass and
toetoes are a real problem and
they need to sort it out.”
All areas associated with
hillside vegetation potentially
pose a fire risk, said Guy.
In response to residents’
concerns about the irregular
maintenance of the slope, Guy
said: “The area in question
is maintained reactively, and
as such can be prompted by
residents and staff who are
carrying out maintenance in the
area.”
He said the city council aims
to maintain a balance between
“vegetation control and bank
stability,” as vegetation on the
slope can help prevent erosion.
Road
closure
frustrates
residents
• From page 1
SailGP said in correspondence
with residents the road closure
was “designed to manage the flow
of traffic, parking, emergency
access, resident access and
transport options for ticket
holders”.
It said addresses in the closed
areas would be mailed a pass
allowing access from Lyttelton in
late February or early March.
SailGP did not respond to
questions from Bay Harbour
News about why it was necessary
to restrict access to residents,
especially those who live close to
Dyers Pass Rd, or if alternative
options had been considered.
On its website it said the traffic
management plan had been
prepared with input from the city
council, ChristchurchNZ, Waka
Kotahi, local businesses and other
stakeholders.
Lyttelton residents will also be
blocked from entering the suburb
through Sumner and Governors
Bay and only allowed access
through Tunnel Rd, Bridle Path
Rd and Ferry Rd.
Tunnel marks
60 years as vital
link to port
YESTERDAY marked 60 years
since the Lyttelton Tunnel first
opened.
It was built for £2.7 million
in 1964 and held the record for
the longest road tunnel in the
country until the opening of
Waterview Tunnel in Auckland
in 2017.
Having Lyttelton Tunnel
meant the Port Hills were no
longer a barrier to road transport.
Christchurch and Lyttelton
were originally connected by a
zigzag path, then a tortuous hilly
road, a railway tunnel, and finally
a road tunnel – 114 years after
the first organised settlement
was established.
In 1965, around 2800 vehicles
travelled through the tunnel
each day. These days, over 11,000
vehicles travel through the
tunnel daily, including around
1200 heavy commercial vehicles
– underlining the tunnel’s importance
as a key freight route.
A post celebrating the
milestone on NZTA’s Facebook
page attracted the following
comments:
Chris Hardwick said: The size
of the tunnel is around twice as
big as what you can see allows
for ventilation, power and other
utilities.
“You could purchase a book of
tickets 10 per book for regular
travellers, 20 cents per car and
10 cents per motorcycle. In 1975
while riding my motorcycle
through the tunnel in rush hour
I was overcome by the fumes
and crashed into the side of the
tunnel.
Pip Grant said: “Can’t
remember how much it cost to
go though the tunnel but it was
exciting when the Lyttelton to
Wellington ferry would leave
from Lyttelton.
“As a little person of 4 years
old it was an event, to go through
the tunnel and get to the ferry
terminal with our toilet paper
roll (our streamers) and throw it
up to the ferry before it departed
along with a heap of others doing
the same thing. We were pretty
amazed how long the tunnel
was.”
Someone Else’s Bucket List A Moving and
Unforgettable Novel of Love and Loss by Amy T. Matthews
In a sisterly P.S. I Love You for the digital age, when an outgoing social media
for fans of Josie Silver and Rebecca Serle, Amy T. Matthews’ wryly funny, bittersweet
new novel puts a uniquely poignant, achingly uplifting twist on life after loss, dreams
that can come true-and how a strong sister bond can be timeless. My dying wish
is for you to finish my bucket list. I refuse to die without knowing this list will be
completed. And I refuse to die without knowing my family will be okay... Jodie Boyd
is a shy and anxious twenty-something, completely unsure what to do with her life.
Her older sister, Bree, is an adventurous, globe-trotting, hugely successful Instagram
influencer with more than a million followers. She’s the most alive person Jodie
knows-up until Bree’s unfathomable, untimely death from Leukaemia. The Boyds are
devastated, not to mention overwhelmed with medical debt. But Bree thought of
everything-and soon, Jodie is shocked by a new post on her sister’s Instagram feed.
The first of many Bree recorded in secret, the post foretells a jaw-dropping challenge
for Jodie- to complete Bree’s very public bucket list. From “Fly over Antarctica,” to
“Perform a walk-on cameo in a Broadway musical,” if Jodie does it-and keeps all
Bree’s followers-a corporate sponsor will pay off the staggering medical debt. If she
gains followers, the Boyds won’t be the only ones to benefit. It’s crazy. It’s terrifying.
It’s impossible, immoral even, to refuse. So, despite the whole world watching, Jodie
plunges in, never imagining that in death, her sister will teach her how to live, and
that the last item on the list-”Fall in love”-may just prove to be the easiest.A tangled
web of ambition and intrigue melts into a tale as delicious and rich as chocolate.
I am pleased to be the new MP for Banks Peninsula. I am committed
to making sure I implement National’s values of delivering change to
my electorate.
National is laser-focused on rebuilding our economy, restoring law
In light of this month’s devastating fires, I want to focus on helping
the Bays become more resilient and figure out how to bridge the gap
On that note, my office in Ferrymead will be fully operational by the
end of this month. The office is located at 987 Ferry Road and will be
NEWS 5
SUMNER artist Ina Johann
will present her observations of
Banks Peninsula at an exhibition
in Diamond Harbour.
From Friday to March 24,
Johann will have a range of abstract
art on display at Stoddart
Cottage Gallery.
Fractures and Residues, the unruly
existence of things exhibition
will explore Johann’s interest in
geological forms, flora and other
living things on the peninsula.
She is interested in lichen and
fungi and finds fringes and
boundaries where natural and
urban habitats meet.
Many of Johann’s drawings
represent spaces cracked
open. Pieces of local rock or
fungi specimens are connected
through drawings and watercolour.
In her work, bold fragments
and tiny residues are at play
to create what she calls “new
territory”.
To gather inspiration, Johann
likes to dig and explore cracks
in nature. She is also a wanderer
and bird lover who spends as
much time as she can in the
bush.
Born in Germany, her
decision to settle and down in
OBSERVER: Ina Johann uses the natural world as the
inspiration for many of her artworks.
Christchurch has expanded her
thinking and influenced her
art practice. Johann has been
an artist in residence in France,
Switzerland, Scotland and held
the volcanic artist residency in
Whakatane. She has received a
number of awards and been a
finalist in the New Zealand Art
Awards. An opening event for
the exhibition will be held at the
gallery on Saturday from 3-5pm.
Forum ‘life-changing’
for year 13 students
TWO YEAR 13 students were
the recipients of scholarships
from the Ferrymead Rotary and
Linwood Woolston Rotary clubs.
Hannah Watson and David
Templeton from Te Aratai
College attended the Rotary
national science and technology
forum in Auckland.
Both Watson and Templeton
described the forum as “lifechanging.”
Watson has returned with
a focus on completing an
agricultural degree at Lincoln
University, rather than
physiotherapy or veterinary
nursing.
She has been interested in the
problems of climate change and
feels an agricultural course will
support her goal of researching
sustainable technology and
cures for diseases.
Templeton still intends to
study mathematics and music
but will include science subjects
in his degree.
He particularly enjoyed
meeting and working with
students from throughout New
Zealand who are focused on and
committed to science studies.
Watson and Templeton
found the visits to technology
companies and Auckland
University both educational
and fun. They were given
experiments to take part in
such as timing running on a
treadmill, and food technology
experiments.
During the weekend they
visited some of Auckland’s
tourist spots like the sky tower.
Over 170 New Zealand students
attended the course organised by
Auckland rotary clubs.
Veteran car ready for sedate tribute
• By Chris Barclay
GEORGE LEE is obviously
no boy racer, but the 76-yearold’s
wheels will turn heads
sedately when Vintage Car
Club Canterbury pays homage
to the world’s longest-running
motoring event.
The retired motor trimmer/
upholsterer owns the oldest
motor entered in Saturday’s inaugural
Brooklands to Brighton
Run, which is modelled on the
enduring London to Brighton
Veteran Car Run and restricted
to vehicles at least a century old.
Lee spent 30 years basically
rebuilding a 1904 Alldays &
Onions single cylinder eight
horsepower four-seater from
scratch, a true labour of love he
had to be railroaded into.
Having restored the interiors
of hundreds of vintage and
classic cars since starting his
apprenticeship at Riccarton bus
builder GB McWhinnie in the
1960s, Lee needed badgering into
buying the motor and gearbox in
Greymouth.
“I thought I work on old cars
all the time, why do I want a
hobby on what I’m working on?”
asked Lee, who then justified
why he relented in 1992.
“It grows on you, it’s a rust disease.
If it’s rusty we’ve got to pick
it up and have a look at it.”
Alldays & Onions’ obscurity
BY GEORGE: Retired motor trimmer/upholsterer George Lee with the finished product of
his part-time labours over 30 years, a pristine examples of a 1904 Alldays & Onions veteran
motor vehicle.
helped because Lee wasn’t interested
in restoring a stock-standard
Model T Ford. The Birmingham-based
English automobile
manufacturer operated between
1898 and 1918.
Once he returned from the
West Coast, Lee sourced an
Alldays & Onions differential in
Palmerston North plus a chassis
from Loburn.
While his veteran – cars
produced before 1918 earn that
designation; vintage were made
between 1919-1930 – is almost
entirely faithful to an original,
there is one modern concession.
“There is a crank at the front
PHOTO: CHRIS BARCLAY
but I’ve got a Japanese starter
motor because I’ve hurt my back
a few times,” Lee admitted.
“The thing is a lot of these cars
never get on the road because the
people who own them are old
and they can’t crank (start) them.
You have to be pretty strong.”
Sporting a canary yellow paint
job for maximum visibility, Lee
spent untold thousands of hours
toiling to make the rare machine
roadworthy two years ago,
though it was not an expensive
exercise.
“It’s cost bugger all really because
I’ve done it all myself,” said
Lee, who was looking forward
to the run after a recent tune-up
jaunt to Geraldine.
“It’s something free for the
public and the kids love it,” he
said.
The London to Brighton Veteran
Car Run was first held as
the Emancipation Run in 1896,
with emancipation referring to
the repeal of the law requiring
all motor vehicles to be preceded
by a man walking with a red
warning flag.
It was revived and rebranded
in 1927, restricted to vehicles
built before 1905, and has subsequently
been held annually with
two exceptions: the duration
of World War 2 plus ensuing
petrol rationing until 1947, the
Covid-19 pandemic stalled the
2020 edition.
The English version in November
covers 87km and attracts
more than 350 entrants, the local
equivalent will be considerably
shorter.
Around 50 drivers will travel a
maximum of 30km after they set
off from Brooklands.
ROADWORTHY: Veteran and vintage-class cars will take part in the inaugural Brooklands
to Brighton Run on Saturday.
The route, which includes
Spencerville, Lower Styx, Prestons,
Burwood, Waimairi Beach,
Marine Parade and Southshore
en route to the final destination,
a car park on Hawke St, should
take about an hour to complete.
And if they experience mechanical
issues along the way,
there should be a 1919 Nash tow
truck in the vicinity.
The run starts at 10am and
once the vehicles, including motorcycles,
arrive they will be on
display until 2pm.
Vintage Car Club Canterbury
branch veteran convener Colin
Hey said members had always
taken a keen interest in the
British event and eventually the
penny dropped.
“We thought, ‘Why don’t we
organise one for Christchurch?
We’ve got a Brighton here,” Hey
said.
The route was designed to keep
potential stoppages to a minimum,
so there is only one set of
traffic lights to negotiate, exiting
Prestons.
“One difficulty with veteran
cars, and especially motorbikes,
is stopping and starting again,”
Hey said.
“Some of the motorbikes don’t
have a clutch, so once the engine
stops the rider has to jump off
and push-start it.
“It’s basically left hand turns
and then one or two intersections
and some roundabouts. It’s very
easy running and there shouldn’t
be too much traffic.”
Hey said the speed was not the
essence, it was an opportunity
to showcase the horsepower of
yesteryear.
“It’s definitely not a race, most
of the cars will do 30 miles an
hour, the really old ones will do
20-25.”
Each participant receives a
commemorative plaque at the
finish, while there will also be
prizes for the oldest vehicle/
youngest driver combination plus
the best motorcycle, car or truck
chosen by the public who visit the
display.
said Leith.
Keen teachers and staff joined
the pupils on their voyage. There
were well-earned ice creams
Smart devices
helping keep
a close eye on
bird numbers
• By Dylan Smits
ARTIFICIAL intelligence is
being used to learn about native
birds in Redcliffs’ Barnett Park.
A mobile bird monitor has
been recording sounds in the
park for the past two years. It
then uploads the data to an AI.
Cacophony Project
manager Matthew
Hellicar said a major
accomplishment
of the monitor was
discovering the
presence of little
owls in the valley.
The species was
introduced to the
South Island from
Germany between
1906 and 1910.
Little owl readings
have been small
in number but
consistent so far,
said Hellicar.
“Without the
technology, what
you get is anecdotal evidence.
People might hear something at
night time,” he said.
“As soon as we know what
we’re trying to protect, we know
where to focus our efforts to
support breeding habitats.”
Invented in 2016, the so-called
‘cacophonator’ analyses bird
songs which then identifies
the species and detects sound
volume.
“It gives you a measure of the
population. It’s impossible to
tell specifically how many of
each bird you’re hearing, but it’s
a sample of the population that
tells you whether the population
PARK RESIDENT: The
little owl’s presence
in Barnett Park
was confirmed by
Cacophony’s bird
monitor.
is doing well or not.”
The monitor will have to run
for several more years before
more accurate estimates of
population changes are made,
but the technology already gives
volunteers an idea of what birds
are in the park, said Hellicar.
There are about eight species
confirmed in
the park from
native silvereyes
to bellbirds and
swallows.
Silvereyes are
the individual
species with the
highest amount of
sounds recorded
with more than
200 confirmed
readings since
the monitor was
installed.
Cacophony
also wants to help
attract more native
species like tūī.
The current AI distinguishes
between 15 bird species,
providing a method of
monitoring species diversity in
the park.
The Cacophony Project
provides data to the park’s
regreening group and Predator
Free Redcliffs as part of a united
effort to protect native birds.
Hellicar joined Cacophony
and other groups like the
Summit Road Society in 2016
after moving from the United
Kingdom.
“My first realisation when I
got involved with our trapping
and monitoring processes in
DEDICATED: Cacophony Project manager Matthew Hellicar is deeply involved in
conservation efforts across Canterbury, playing a role in the Banks Peninsula Conservation
Trust and the Summit Road Society.
UNITED: Volunteers from the Cacophony Project with members of the Barnett Park
regreening group and Predator Free Redcliffs. The organisations work together with the
overall goal of increasing the native bird population in Barnett Park.
New Zealand was that our data is
really poor.”
“We’re building the cacophony
index of how loud the birdsong
is.”
There are six volunteers in
the park regreening group who
regularly monitor the artificial
intelligence’s analysis, said
Hellicar.
The volunteers listen to the
monitor recordings and confirm
whether the artificial intelligence
is correct in identifying the
species.
“That’s how the AI is learning,
so it’s really critical.”
SMART DEVICES: The ‘cacophonator’ is an AI-equipped
bird audio monitor. It distinguishes between bird species
and supplies a population estimate based on the volume
of bird song. Right, cacophony’s powerful thermal camera
uses AI to make visual detections and classifications of
predators and native birds.
CELEBRATION: Swimmers made a splash in the Governors Bay
community pool on Sunday after completing a relay hosted by the fire
brigade for mental health charity I Am Hope.
Firefighters’ swim
relay ‘exceeded
our hopes’
• By Dylan Smits
A CHARITY swim relay hosted by the
Governors Bay Volunteer Fire Brigade has
so far raised just over $6000 for a youth
mental health charity.
Brigade secretary Mike Smith said the
swim “exceeded our hopes”. The brigade
had set the goal of raising $5000 for I Am
Hope.
On Sunday, 22 swimmers from the brigade
and the bay area swam a combined
700 lengths at the Governors Bay pool.
“Our community really got in behind it,
we didn’t know how many swimmers we
would get until they turned up at the pool
gate,” said Smith.
The charity was chosen because firefighters
are on the frontline of mental
health callouts, said Smith.
“These calls weigh heavily on us all. As
first responders it is heart-wrenching to
witness young members of our community
struggling with their mental health and
well-being.”
Founded by mental health advocate
Mike King, I Am Hope has funded counselling
for more than 10,000 young people
since 2013.
“More funds for speedy access to free
counselling will help these young people
navigate their most challenging times,”
said Smith.
The swimmers came from every part
of the community, from primary school
children to grandmothers.
“There was a great atmosphere with
lots of non-swimmers coming along to
support us,” said Smith.
“Plenty of cheering going on as people
came out of the water with big smiles as
swimmers finished their lengths.”
Many of the swimmers wore costumes
and were sponsored by friends and family.
At least one participant was swimming
laps for the duration of the event from
9am to noon.
Smith said the idea was inspired by the
Amberley Volunteer Fire Brigade, who
held a similar event on Saturday.
“We decided as a group to do something
DRESSED-UP: Governors Bay
residents Dianne and Annabel took
part in the swim and had three
costume changes throughout.
to raise funds for such a great cause.”
The event was the biggest joint brigade
fundraiser Smith has seen since he joined
seven years ago.
Governors Bay residents Vladka Hassett
and Denise Hellebrekers swam the most
laps and got the most sponsors respectively.
Smith said the 13 brigade swimmers
were “completely outswum by the kids”
but managed to complete a combined 200
lengths.
“We still have a tanker crew on the Port
Hills fire ground doing mop up duties at
the same time that the swim fundraiser
was going on, so some missed out.”
Grants awarded to high-achieving siblings
ACHIEVERS: Siblings Gabriella and Jeremy Hawke have received grants from the Sumner
Ferrymead Foundation to support their future studies.
FOR THE first time in the
Sumner Ferrymead Foundation’s
30-year history, two siblings were
recipients of grants in the latest
funding round.
Gabriella and Jeremy Hawke,
a promising ballet dancer and
an aspiring surfer respectively,
both received funds to support
their studies at the NZ School
of Dance in Wellington and the
Raglan Surfing Academy.
Gabriella started ballet at the
age of three in the Sumner community
hall, and it has been her
sole focus since then.
“I’ve learnt many styles
including classical, jazz, musical
theatre and contemporary, but
classical ballet is my favourite.
I love the discipline of it, and
the history behind be,” said
Gabriella.
“My goal is to join the Royal
New Zealand Ballet. Last year I
got feel for what it’s like to be in
a professional dance company
when I had a two-month secondment
with them. It was a wonderful
experience.”
As a third year student,
Gabriella’s typical day starts
with a classical technique class,
followed by more dance classes
until 4.30 or 5pm.
“The last year has no academic
classes unlike the first two years,
where we studied physiology,
anatomy, sports psychology, music,
dance history, dance studies
and the list goes on.
“On top of that I was completing
my last year at high school so
it was incredibly busy.
“I am so grateful to the support
I have received from the
Sumner Ferrymead Foundation
as not only are the tuition costs
very expensive, but so is living in
Wellington. It’s a great help.”
Unlike Gabriella, her younger
brother Jeremy has tried most
sports – from skateboarding
and football to snowboarding
and skiing. And then he found
surfing!.
Jeremy is using the grant from
the Sumner Ferrymead Foundation
towards the tuition costs at
the Raglan Surf Academy. The
academy is part of Raglan Area
School and provides surfing as a
physical education subject.
To be accepted students need
to be highly motivated, have a
high level of surfing competence
and a keen desire to do well both
in surfing and at school work.
“The surf academy curriculum
involves organising and running
a national surfing event for
secondary school students, skills
I can bring back to Sumner at the
end of the year,” said Jeremy.
“And, the expert coaching I
receive will improve my surfing
skills when competing in competitions
and free surfing.”
Sumner Ferrymead Foundation
trustee and New Zealand
Olympian John Christensen
knows too well the discipline,
passion and training required for
young elite athletes to succeed.
“It is hard to study, work and
train, so by providing some financial
assistance we hope to be
able to reduce the financial burden
on them and their families.
It will be great to be able to follow
both Gabriella and Jeremy’s
progress in the years to come.”
Next month the Sumner Ferrymead
Foundation is offering
four $5000 and one $10,000
community grants to clubs,
groups, and organisations in
the foundation’s catchment area
– from Taylors Mistake to Mt
Pleasant, around to Heathcote
and across to Brookhaven – to
celebrate 30 years of helping the
local community.
“It’s quite a milestone so it
seemed a good opportunity to
provide $30,000 for community
projects to mark the 30 years,”
said Christensen.
• Information on the
community grants will
be available on the
website www.sumner
TREASURES FROM THE PAST
Black Prince and Bellona visit harbour
ON THE afternoon of 30 April,
1946, the British Royal Navy’s
light cruiser HMS Black Prince
steamed quietly through the
heads of Whakaraupō Lyttelton
Harbour without the assistance
of the harbour pilot or tug, on its
way to berth at Lyttelton Port’s
No. 4 Wharf.
Greeted by a small crowd of
sightseers, the ship’s crew were
invited to festivities held by the
Christchurch-based Union Jack
Club Inc., while its officers were
wined and dined by dignitaries
from the Lyttelton Harbour
Board and borough council.
In the days that followed, the
cruiser was open to the public
and more than 1500 people,
many of them school children,
went aboard to inspect what
was soon to become the newest
addition to the Royal New
Zealand Navy (RNZN).
Having been formed from
the Royal Navy’s New Zealand
Division just five years earlier
in October 1941, the RNZN’s
wartime fleet had acquitted
itself with honours in numerous
WWII battles from the Atlantic
to the Pacific oceans.
In the immediate aftermath of
WWII, however, the RNZN was
looking to adapt to peacetime
conditions which required
modernising its ageing fleet and
expanding its personnel. As part
of this post-war transition, the
old cruisers HMNZS Achilles
and Gambia were replaced
by two former Royal Navy
‘Improved’ Dido-class light
cruisers, with the RNZN flagship
HMNZS Bellona commissioned
on 17 April 1946, followed by
HMNZS Black Prince on 25
May, 1946.
NAVAL VISITORS: HMS Black Prince lit up in Lyttelton port. RIght – Sailor on wharf duty by HMNZS Bellona in Lyttelton
port c. 18 November 1947. PHOTOS: TE ŪAKA THE LYTTELTON MUSEUM REF. 1009394 AND 10512.1.
Launched in August 1942 and
commissioned in November
1943, HMS Black Prince had a
notable WWII service history in
the Royal Navy, from operations
in the North Sea to participation
in the D-Day landings, as well
as actions in the Mediterranean
and the Pacific including the
battle of Okinawa.
Displacing 6050 tonnes, she
was 156m long with a 15.4m
beam and 4.3m draught.
Propelled by four Admiralty
three-drum boilers producing
62,000 shaft horsepower (46
megawatts) driving four geared
steam turbines for a maximum
speed of 32.25 knots (59.73
km/h), the Black Prince had a
range of 6,824 km at 16 knots (30
km/h) cruising speed.
With a full complement of
530 men and main armament of
eight QF 5.25-inch guns in four
dual turrets fore and aft, these
Royal Navy Dido-class light
cruisers were considered a fitting
‘hand-me-down’ for the young
RNZN.
After its brief stay at Lyttelton,
the Black Prince departed on 5
May, 1946 for commissioning
and a full refit at its new
Auckland station, where it was to
be joined by its newly appointed
commander, Ashburton resident
Captain Charles Clinton Stevens.
Commander Stevens had
been a longtime member of the
Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve
(New Zealand) while working
at the Massey Harris Agency in
Ashburton.
On the outbreak of WWII
he joined the minesweeper fleet
before serving with distinction
in the Mediterranean and
Pacific theatres. His new
appointment was to oversee
the modernisation of the newly
acquired HMNZS Black Prince.
However, budget constraints and
recruitment difficulties, followed
by ‘mutinies’ among many
RNZN crews related to pay and
welfare concerns throughout
1947, would see the Black Prince
mothballed until its refit was
completed in 1952-3.
The Black Prince’s sister-ship
HMNZS Bellona had also been
commissioned into the Royal
Navy in 1943, participating
in various WWII operations
including Arctic convoys, the
sinking of the famous Nazi
battleship Tirpitz, as well as the
Normandy landings.
In April 1947, her RNZN crew
was also involved in a ‘mutiny’
while in port at Auckland. The
following November she visited
Ōhinehou Lyttelton as part of a
Te Waipounamu South Island
tour.
While the ship was in port, a
large number of her crew were
on leave in the central city when
Ballantynes department store
caught fire at 3:48pm on the
afternoon of 18 November, 1947.
The fierce intensity of the
blaze attracted large crowds at
which point the Bellona crew
stepped in to assist the fire
brigade and keep the public
out of harm’s way before police
reinforcements arrived. This
catastrophic fire killed 41
employees and remains the
deadliest fire disaster in the
country’s history.
Over the ensuing years,
HMNZS Bellona, with the Black
Prince from 1952-55, would play
key roles alongside the newly
acquired Loch-class frigates, in
training, regional cooperation,
and maintaining New Zealand’s
post-war naval presence in the
Pacific.
Bellona was returned
to the Royal Navy in 1956,
controversially replaced by
its ageing fellow Dido-class
cruiser HMNZS Royalist. The
old Black Prince represented
the RNZN at the coronation of
Queen Elizabeth II in 1953, and
made one last call at Lyttelton
on 9 November, 1954. She was
decommissioned in August
1955 to serve out her days as an
accommodation and spare parts
ship before being towed to Japan
for scrap in 1962.
DIAMOND HARBOUR RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB
Diamond Harbour Junior Teams
Hannah Riden, our Junior Club Captain, has the junior side of our club really
motivated. They just had an overnight camp in Port Levy, with lots of activities
attended by around 60 parents and kids. They have had Black Fern Grace
Brooker and previous Black Fern Stacey Lene visit to talk to and train with the
kids. They run fun events like roller discos and giant water slides, and of course
our club day packed with entertainment, food and drink for all.
The junior club is focused on fun and participation, with a family atmosphere
where all are welcome. The clubs stands for values such as respect, inclusion,
sportsmanship, courage and compassion, and champions those for our kids
both on and off the field. We encourage our senior team to be
role models and support the juniors, and they get stuck into it together
at our club day in games such as waterballooning the seniors and juniors
versus seniors tug of war.
Registration Day March 17 from 12 noon
Come be a part of it at Registration Day on
the 17th of March from 12 noon with the
super-wide fireman-powered water-slide!
Also bouncy castle, coffee cart, ice-creams,
bar open, sausage sizzle.
