Are you ready for this
spring’s upcoming aweinspiring
celestial event?
On April 8, 2024, a total
solar eclipse will cross North
America, passing over Mexico, the
United States and Canada. A total
solar eclipse happens when the
moon passes between the sun and
Earth, completely blocking the face
of the sun. The sky will darken as
if it were dawn or dusk; nocturnal
wildlife sometimes wakes up,
thinking that it is nighttime, and
non-nocturnal wildlife might think
it’s time to head to sleep.
Although we cannot normally
see the corona — the sun’s outer
atmosphere — because the sun’s
surface below it is so much brighter,
during a total solar eclipse, the
corona becomes visible, offering a
unique and amazing sight.
After the total solar eclipse
on April 8, the next total solar
eclipse that will be visible from the
contiguous United States will be on
Aug. 23, 2044. This rare occurrence
makes it a “must see” that will be
visible across much of the Midwest,
so it’s time to map out your viewing
location and make your plans.
On Monday, April 8, and the
weekend prior, many Southern
Indiana locations will host events
that residents and visitors alike can
enjoy.
Hoosier National Forest
If camping is your thing, Hoosier
National Forest may be just the
spot. The eclipse will encompass
most of the Hoosier National Forest,
which stresses that all developed
campsites will be by reservation-only,
via recreation.gov, even
those campsites that were previously
designated as first-come, firstserved.
This includes campsites
across the forest, including Saddle
Lake, Indian-Celina Lake, Tipsaw
Lake, German Ridge and Buzzard
Roost, among others.
Crawford County
Camping is also available in
Crawford County at various locations:
Patoka Lake State Park, Sycamore
Springs Park, Cave Country
Canoes and Marengo Cave. The
county also offers cabins and other
accommodations.
Leading up to Eclipse Day, Out
Party, which will include ample
viewing areas, as well as a square
dance extravaganza and other cultural
heritage activities.
Cave Country Canoes will
sponsor Eclipse on the River, a
unique event on Blue River, where
you will be able to witness the total
solar eclipse from the comfort of
your kayak. Campers and lodging
guests with personal watercraft will
be able to launch for free. Kayaks
are also available for rent. Whether
you are staying overnight to camp
or just joining in for the eclipse, you
can enjoy the celestial show from
the water.
