THIEVES WHO open
padlocks securing implement
sheds at the Edmonds Factory
Gardens and remove them,
without taking anything else,
are baffling volunteers who
tend to the city landmark.
While the Friends of
Edmonds Factory Gardens
Society’s work off Ferry Rd is
routinely undermined by vandalism
and rubbish dumping,
the curious actions of two men
present an unusual headache.
How the duo, who targeted
the sheds on December 8, January
23 and February 7, opened
the padlocks concerned society
president John Hoskin.
“These guys somehow or
other have managed to get a
key. It’s a complete and utter
mystery why they’re doing
this,” the 86-year-old said.
Hoskin said police had been
notified on each occasion and
he was surprised they had not
been able to trace the pair.
With six CCTV cameras
on site, Hoskin said they have
footage of the men arriving by
car, removing the locks and
departing, always in broad
daylight.
“We’ve given them ideal
photos . . . the car they come in
and the registration and they
still don’t seem to be able to nail
them down.”
Police had not traced the men
and enquiries are continuing.

five padlocks, and only on the
first incident did the men try
and continue to enter the sheds,
only to be thwarted by another
layer of security.
Now they are content to just
take the padlocks.

Central Community Board
member John Miller was also
perplexed about why padlocks
were targeted.
“It’s very bizarre. The obvious
reason is metal value, they are
made of brass, but a merchant
told us they’re $5 each, so it
seems like a hell of a lot of work
and risk,” he said.
The city council’s acting head
of parks Rupert Bool was also
puzzled.
“We are unsure how these
padlocks are being taken, we
are looking into a new style of
padlock to hope to alleviate
thefts,” he said.
Between September 5 last
year and February 20 council
staff had to replace 33 padlocks
at community parks.
The city council oversees
infrastructure at the gardens,
including a toilet block and
rubbish removal. A band of
devoted volunteers take care of
the gardens’ upkeep.
In recent months the toilet
block has been vandalised on
several occasions, while cyclists
are ignoring signs barring access
and damaging the lawns.
Nine brass memorial plaques
have also been removed
from benches.
“That is purely for scrap.
We’re trying to get them replaced,”
said Hoskin, who also
lamented some benches had
been gouged, and rose beds
uprooted.
“There’s always something
going on, it’s all very
heartbreaking.”
Thomas Edmonds,
manufacturer of the iconic
Kiwi baking powder brand,
commissioned the gardens
around his Ferry Rd factory in
1923.
The factory, which was
demolished in 1990, and
gardens are instantly
recognisable nationwide
thanks to featuring on the
front cover of the Edmonds
Cookery Book since 1955.

are planned along the route of the
City to Sea Pathway
Community feedback has
opened on the proposals which
are part of the pathway, a planned
11-kilometre walking and cycling
path following the course of the
Ōtākaro Avon River from Oxford
Tce to Pages Rd, New Brighton.
The pathwat will be constructed
in three stages:

said the pathway is expected to be

“We’ve heard from the
community that they currently feel
unsafe when crossing some of the
roads, due to poor visibility, high
speeds, and no dedicated crossing
points.”
The crossings will lower speeds
and make it safer for pathway
users, Little said.
Coastguard
fundraising
for new
permanent
premises
COASTGUARD Canterbury is
fundraising for new headquarters
after years of temporary
buildings.
The February 22, 2011
earthquake damaged the
Lyttelton-based organisation’s
Naval Point building. It was
demolished last year ahead of
SailGP.
Since then, the coastguard
has been based in temporary
accommodation in portacoms at
the Naval Point public jetty.
The city council, community
and iwi have had input on the
design and location of the new
building, near the public slipway.
The new headquarters will
feature meeting and training
rooms. There will also be a radio
room with a harbour lookout.

and trailer will be installed.

Arrests made over electrical thefts
THREE MEN have been arrested
after alleged powerline tampering
and electrical thefts across
Christchurch, which police say is
“dangerous” offending.
Police confirmed the trio –
variously aged 40 and 48 – are due
to reappear in the district court on
charges related to the incidents.
On Thursday, February 22
police responded to Ruru Rd,
Bromley where a man stole a
vehicle loaded with electrical
supplies.
Police located the vehicle as it
went down Linwood Ave towards
Sumner and officers observed it
turning down Portman St, where
the vehicle was recovered and a
man arrested. The arrest followed
the two other men detained the
previous week.
The electrical thefts left
Educational Child Care Centre in
Dallington without power on four
occasions over a four week period.
Staff arrived at work to find
there was no power, a situation
that was starting to become stressful
for parents trying to drop off
their children first thing in the
morning, centre manager Sarah
Webb-Matenga said.
“We just haven’t been able to
open. The first time we couldn’t
open until after 10. And this last
two times, it was sort of nine.”
THe repeated bold attacks
have left residents puzzled as
investigations continue.
“Police continue to investigate
Christchurch powerline
tampering, electrical supply and
copper thefts, including incidents
over the last four weeks, one
incident occurring just last night
on Raymond Rd,” said Senior
Sergeant Roy Appley.
“Recent incidents have occurred
in the Marshlands, Dallington
and Bromley areas, including
Lower Styx Rd, Banks Ave and
Gayhurst Ave, typically between 3
and 5.45am.
“The three arrested were not
the only people involved in this
activity and we would caution
scrap metal dealers that this
is occurring and to be wary of
frequent customers.
“The theft of copper from live
wires is extremely dangerous.
If someone were to touch these
downed lines, they could be badly
injured or killed.”
Appley said anyone who noticed
damaged power equipment
should call Orion on 0800 363
9898 – day or night.
“We have identified a vehicle of
interest – a white station wagon –
and ask that anyone living in the
Dallington area with street-facing
CCTV that might have captured
images of this vehicle to get in
touch.”

“EVERYONE HAS one hour per
week to spend with a child.”
That’s the motto of Big Brothers
Big Sisters (BBBS) volunteer
Sharon Layton, who has spent
the last nine years giving support
to children and teens in need.
“In 2008 to 2009, almost every
charity was; write a cheque and
give us money. Well, I didn’t
have money. But I had time.”
So, she joined BBBS, where
children and teenagers are
paired up with an adult to spend
an hour together, after school or
on the weekend, for a minimum
of one year.
“The kids get put forward by
a school or a church or similar
because something has happened
in their home life and they’re
falling through the gaps.
“We don’t spend money on
the kids and we don’t interfere.
Anything said doesn’t go back
to their parents, it’s just to be a
stable extra person to trust, talk

to and do things with.”
Layton is the owner and operator
of property management firm
Quinovic Merivale.
“Time is something people
don’t consider but now with how
flexible work can be and it not
being all about working nine to
five, charity work can suit most
people.
“It gives me joy and absolute
fulfilment knowing these kids,
who could’ve gone down a
wrong path, didn’t. I can’t see
myself stopping anytime soon.”
Layton’s longest pairing, which
ended last year, was for seven
years and she said her new
pairing of a few months is going
well.
“It’s a great thing if a kid gets
more out of their life. Some
volunteers go to graduations or
21st parties and some kids say
we, BBBS, have saved their lives,”
said Layton.
There have been 2560 matches
of children, teens and adults
within BBBS’ Christchurch
sector across 20 years, with 175
matches in the past year, and 140
current open matches.
Layton is also a part of the
Zonta Club of Christchurch-
Canterbury, which is a global
initiative that works on building
a better world and society for
all girls and women to fully
participate in.
The club is hosting a global
Zonta Rose Day today, which is
a ticketed event, and will have
four guest speakers; Kendall
Flutey, Ella Archer, Cheryl Doig
and Jenny Clark speaking about
gender equality in innovative
and technological industries.
The event starts at 5.30pm at
Richmond Club. Tickets cost

Yes, that’s right a new House of Travel has opened in your area!!
Located on the corner of Prestons Road and Prestons Park Road you will find our new
shiny store.
Some of you will remember our old HOT Shirley office located at Homebase on
Marshland Road. We closed this store during the dark years of Covid and due to
a change of ownership at the Merivale store the Shirley owners – Nicky de Clifford and
Lisa Hutchison merged the two teams together.
However, we were always committed to coming back into the area when the time was
right. Travel has bounced back and the demand for our services has increased.
As more and more Kiwi’s are heading abroad the industry has struggled to keep up
which has caused prices to be higher than normal and availability stretched. However,
we are seeing more airlines coming back into the NZ market and an increase in tours
and cruises worldwide.
So, the time is right to start looking at your next holiday – we recommend booking as
far out as you can to ensure you get what you want. This is especially the case if you
are travelling during school holidays OR at other peak times such as Easter or
Christmas. We are excited to be back in the Marshland area of Christchurch and have
a new experienced team to help assist with your travel plans.

End of an era for Mazda’s long-serving ute
MAZDA ISN’T one of the heavy
hitters in our ute arena, but has
undeniable longevity, competing
with varying degree of success in
this market since the mid 1960s.
Up until 2020, the BT50 was
the not-so-well-known twin
of the hugely successful Ford
Ranger, in a model share deal
between Mazda and Ford. For
the current Ranger, Ford opted
out of this arrangement and
instead partnered with European
automotive heavy hitter
Volkswagen, with the current
Ranger the donor vehicle for the
latest Volkswagen Amarok.
Mazda was hardly flush
with offers from other vehicle
manufacturers keen to join forces
with them on a new ute. After a

collaboration knot with Isuzu
in a union of two of the smallest
manufacturers of Japanese
utes. Essentially the BT50 is
the current D-Max with some
cosmetic changes.
It seems Mazda’s days in
our ute market are numbered,
having clocked up around 58
years. The latest shipment of
BT50s is reportedly the last.
Mazda NZ deleting the BT50
from their catalogue is due to a
variety of factors including the
huge rise in the popularity of
SUVs, and increasingly tougher
engine emission standards.
The BT50 will still be sold in
Australia.

levels, starting with the GSX. For
this road test we check out this
model in $57,290 4WD form.
In the engine bay is a familiar
face and one tough customer in
Isuzu’s long serving and durable
turbocharged 3.0L four-cylinder
diesel.
These days it makes a handy,
but hardly class-leading, 140kw
of power. The 450Nm of torque
on tap is below the class average
500Nm most buyers are looking
for, but on the credit side of
the ledger it is as smooth and
refined as most of its rivals. It
showed plenty of energy and
endeavour to comfortably handle
the toughest on and off road
assignments.
If you want a ute that’s relaxing
to drive over long distances, and
who doesn’t, few do it better than
this one. A lot the kudos for this
is down to the BT50’s well-sorted
six-speed automatic that puts in a
consistently good gear-changing
shift, no matter the task.
A well-proportioned cab
provides plenty of leg and
headroom, and the seats are
supportive and comfy, with no
complaints from the passengers I
had on board.
For an entry-level model the
GSX is fairly well suited up.
A touch screen infotainment
system supports both Apple
CarPlay and Android Auto,
while a multi-information
display provides key driving
information.
The balance between ride
comfort and road holding is as
good as you will find among the
current crop of utes, apart from
the class leading Ford Ranger.
This has been achieved
without compromising durability
and strength, with the GSX
offering plenty of both, with a
heavier duty rear suspension
arrangement in recognition of it
being more of a work orientated
ute.
In GSX trim the firmer rear
spring make the low speed ride
over uneven surfaces fidgety.
However, the test ute cornered
confidently with the enjoyment
heightened by well-weighted and
communicative steering.
