Residents left frustrated over
‘forgotten’ traffic safety work
• By Sasha Watson
FOR YEARS, residents have
requested safety improvements
and traffic management
on Northcote Rd and the
surrounding streets.
Now, they feel “forgotten
about” and “disappointed” in
the city council’s response to
their requests.
Gary Watts,
who lives in
the area, has
pushed for
improvements
since 2017
when he first
presented his
Gary Watts
concerns to
the Waipapa
Papanui-Innes-Central Community
Board.
“It’s very disappointing to see
nothing being done because it is
an ideal place to live in.
“It’s growing, and it’s close to
many amenities. It feels like the
council has forgotten about us.”
The number of vehicles on
Northcote Rd for last year
(January-November 2023) was
about 11,332 detections eastbound
approaching and 12,554
travelling westbound.
The most recent stats (2020)
for average daily traffic was 424
vehicles along Paddington St,
534 on Uxbridge St and 1021 on
Fenchurch St.
Watts said the increase in
traffic over the last four years
is due to the recent opening
SAFER STREETS: Northcote residents want better traffic management as the area’s
booming population is causing backups and safety risks on high pedestrian streets.
of Marian College and the
increase in population with
further increases coming with
the opening of the nearby
Pak’n’Save supermarket.
This concerns residents
as it causes congestion
along Fenchurch, Camden,
Paddington and Ealing streets,
and makes crossing the roads
unsafe.
principal Sam Turner and
board of trustees chair Rose
Wells spoke about the issues at
a community Board meeting on
February 15.
“Some parents have had concerns
about children walking
to school safely as there’s decreased
visibility from increased
parked cars. We
feel like it’s only
a matter of time
until something
happens. Basically,
at peak
times, the street
is becoming oneway.”
Turner and
Rose suggested
Emma
Norrish
extending yellow painted lines,
painting around corners, timerestricted/no
parking signs,
adding turning lanes, and
installing light signals.
Community board chair,
Emma Norrish said Marian
College staff are investigating
traffic volumes in the area now
that its students are back.
“Staff have ordered tube
counts and will further investigate
the effect students have on
Paddington and surrounding
streets.”
Donating time to assist their community
Right across the city,
some amazing women
help their community
every day. To mark
International Women’s
Day tomorrow, reporter
Sasha Watson spoke
to advocators and
empowerers Sharon
Layton and Phillipa
Jacobs-Lory
“EVERYONE HAS one hour per
week to spend with a child.”
That’s the motto of Big Brothers
Big Sisters (BBBS) volunteer
Sharon Layton, who has spent
the last nine years giving support
to children and teens in need.
“In 2008 to 2009, almost every
charity was; write a cheque and
give us money. Well, I didn’t
have money. But I had time.”
So, she joined BBBS, where
children and teenagers are
paired up with an adult to spend
an hour together, after school or
on the weekend, for a minimum
of one year.
“The kids get put forward by a
school or a church or similar because
something has happened in
their home life and they’re falling
through the gaps.
“We don’t spend money on
the kids and we don’t interfere.
Anything said doesn’t go back to
their parents, it’s just to be a stable
STRENGTH: Sharon Layton, left, has spent the last nine years giving an hour each week to
support to children and teens in need. Zonta’s New Zealand District 16 Governor, Phillipa
Jacobs-Lory, has had a passion for working with women for more than 20 years.
extra person to trust, talk to and
do things with.”
Layton is the owner and operator
of property management firm
Quinovic Merivale.
“Time is something people
don’t consider but now with how
flexible work can be and it not being
all about working nine to five,
charity work can suit most people.
“It gives me joy and absolute
fulfilment knowing these kids,
who could’ve gone down a
wrong path, didn’t. I can’t see
myself stopping anytime soon.”
Layton’s longest pairing, which
ended last year, was for seven
years and she said her new pairing
of a few months is going well.
“It’s a great thing if a kid gets
more out of their life. Some
volunteers go to graduations or
21st parties and some kids say
we, BBBS, have saved their lives,”
said Layton.
There have been 2560 matches
of children, teens and adults
within BBBS’ Christchurch
sector across 20 years, with 175
matches in the past year, and 140
current open matches.
Layton is also a part of the
UNEVEN SURFACE: An artificial surface is coming to replace the damaged Paddington
Reserve volleyball court, but nobody knows when.
Surface solution in sight
for park’s volleyball court
• By Sasha Watson
THE DAMAGED Paddington
Reserve volleyball court will be
getting an artificial surface, but
no one knows when.
Local resident Gary Watts has
pushed for permanent repairs to
the Northcote court for about 12
months and first lodged a request
to the council in February 2023.
“It would be much appreciated
to learn why the playing surface
hasn’t yet been made safe for use.
“It is quite a major concern.
The mayor, Phil Mauger, was
even quite disturbed to learn
this information when he visited
Paddington Reserve/Park a few
months ago,” said Watts.
A city council spokesperson
said Mauger had visited in
January, and thought there was
a bit of a health and safety issue
with the dirt on the court. He
asked the head of parks to look
into it.
“Over the last 18 months,
the court has experienced an
increase in casual use, resulting
in increased wear and tear.
“The turf court was renovated in
October 2023 and has since been
safe for use. Staff have replaced
the volleyball net and repaired the
turf for now and are looking at a
longer-term solution.”
But, the council didn’t say
when the new artificial turf
would be installed.
Papanui Ward city councillor
Victoria Henstock, who engaged
with Watts about the issue, also
didn’t know.
“However, I am delighted to
learn staff have confirmed they
are working towards a long-term
solution and are currently engaging
a specialist sport turf contractor
to install an artificial surface,
offering year-round play for the
community. That’s a great result.”
Traffic issues an
ongoing concern
• From page 1
Papanui Ward city councillor
Victoria Henstock was not at the
meeting because she was out of
town but she spoke about the
issues beforehand to Norrish and
community board advisor, Mark
Saunders.
“Once college staff have
this information, they’ll look
at what no stopping and/or
timed parking restrictions are
appropriate to the Uxbridge,
Paddington, Fenchurch block and
make their recommendations to
the board,” she said.
Henstock is also planning
to include adding four lanes to
Northcote Rd in the city council’s
Long Term Plan.
Watts mentioned that along the
streets, there are new units and
car parks installed, which has
narrowed them significantly.
“At one end, there are Marian
College students who park on
both sides of the road. At the
other end is Te Kura o Matarangi
Northcote Primary School,
which, during rush hour times,
significantly lessens drivers’
visibility for pedestrians,” he said.
A city council spokesperson
confirmed Paddington St was
seven-and-a-half metres wide,
which is considered wide enough
for a vehicle to safely pass
through other vehicles parked on
BUSY: Traffic volume at
the Lydia St–Northcote
Rd intersection is being
investigated.
both sides of the road.
There is also concern about
the lack of signage installed
around the college and the delay
in installing the 30km/h speed
limits on Paddington St.
However, the spokesperson
said: “On Paddington St, there
would be no signs installed as
they would be provided at the
gateways to the zone bound by
Northcote, Main North and
Tuckers roads and the railway
line.
“We can confirm there will be
a warning sign on Northcote Rd
with variable speed limits, they are
just going through programme
implementation at the moment.”
The date of installation is yet to
ST MARGARET’S College
has finished the South Island
secondary school rowing
championships as the top
Canterbury school and third
best overall, behind Wakatipu
High School and Timaru Boys’
High.
The crews won the U17 coxed
four, U18 coxless pair, U15 coxed
eight and U18 novice coxed
four, at Lake Ruataniwha in
Twizel. The gold medals were
accompanied by four silvers.
The result is an improvement
on last year’s two golds, three
silvers and five bronzes, and saw
St Margaret’s finish as the top
girls’ school in the competition
as well.
Scarlett Hansen and Poppy
Blakely were a part of two winning
teams – they won the U15
coxed eight as well as the U18
novice four, competing up three
age groups.
Coxswain Bella Harris directed
wins for the U15 coxed
eight and U17 coxed four.
St Andrew’s also performed
strongly at the event.
They won four golds as well –
in the boys’ U16 coxed four and
eight, the girls’ U16 coxed eight
and boys’ U18 coxed four.
This, alongside their three
bronze medals and other fourth
and fifth-placings, saw St
Andrew’s finish as the second
best Canterbury school and the
second-best co-ed in the competition.
St Bede’s also celebrated four
gold medals.
The U17 teams in the coxed
eight and coxless pair were first,
as well as the U18 novice coxed
eight and U15 coxed eight.
They took home five silver
medals and one bronze, and saw
two boats place in the top three
in the U17 coxed four, finishing
second and third.
Rangi Ruru was successful as
well, with three golds, a silver,
and five bronze medals.
They had multiple medalwinning
boats in two categories,
placing first and third in the
U18 novice coxed eight as well
as second and third in the U15
coxed eight.
They were the third-best girls’
school in the competition, behind
St Margaret’s and Christchurch
Girls’ High.
Christ’s College took home just
one gold – the boys’ U15 coxed
octuple sculls – as well as two
silvers and two bronzes.
This was the same medal haul
as last year, with Christ’s even
defending the title they won in
2023 in the U15 coxed octuple.
Burnside High School bounced
back after a year without medals
in 2023 – they took home one
gold, silver and bronze.
Burnside emerged victorious
in the girls’ U18 novice coxed
quad sculls. Zeda Mata’u coxed
the team of Sam Rankin, Bryah
Moriarty and siblings Kate and
Emily Ryall to victory.
Marian College also won one
gold, silver and bronze.
Charlotte Peterson and Cara
Brignull won the U17 double
scull with Peterson turning
around and placing third on the
U17 coxed four as well.
These schools will all compete
in the premier national
competition – the Maadi Cup –
from March 18-23, also at Lake
Ruataniwha.
SAFE RIDING: The city council is proposing to add three new road crossings to the City
to Sea Pathway.
Safe crossings for path
THREE SAFE new road crossings
are planned along the route
of the City to Sea Pathway.
Community feedback has
opened on the proposals
which are part of the pathway,
a planned 11-kilometre walking
and cycling path following
the course of the Ōtākaro Avon
River from Oxford Tce to Pages
Rd, New Brighton.
The pathwat will be constructed
in three stages:
• Western section – from
Fitzgerald Ave to Kerrs Rd.
• Eastern section – from Kerrs
Rd to Wainoni Rd.
• Wainoni to Waitaki section –
from Wainoni Rd to Pages Rd.
The western section will be
constructed first and includes
three new road crossings on
Stanmore Rd, Swanns Rd and
Gayhurst Rd.
The community will be able
to view details of the planned
crossings and give feedback until
March 24. Staff will also be at two
community events where people
can see the plans, ask questions,
and give feedback in person.
The events include a community
drop-in at Dallington
Landing on Saturday from 10amnoon,
and the Richmond Gala at
Avebury House on March 23 from
10am-2pm.
Dave Little, Red zone manager,
said the pathway is expected to be
popular.
“We’ve heard from the community
that they currently feel unsafe
when crossing some of the roads,
due to poor visibility, high speeds,
and no dedicated crossing points.”
The crossings will lower speeds
and make it safer for pathway
users, Little said.
Roasting up a storm with courgettes
Courgettes in season
are cheap, easy to
cook and completely
dependable, reckons
Nigel Slater
Honey-roasted
courgettes and ricotta
Roasted courgettes can be
seasoned with garlic and smoky
paprika and served with ricotta.
Add halves of lemon at the table.
Cook the courgettes on a tray
and you’ll get a firmer, more
toasted result than if you cook
them in a deep-sided baking
dish. Use a palette knife to turn
them once, so they caramelise a
little on both sides. To veganise
the recipe, use agave or date
syrup in place of honey.
Makes enough for 4
Ingredients
4 medium courgettes
2 Tbsp honey
6 Tbsp olive oil
3 tsp dried mint
2 Tbsp thyme leaves
2 cloves garlic
1 tsp ground paprika
50g golden sultanas
1 Tbsp pine kernels
250g ricotta
Method
Set the oven to 220 deg C.
Remove the stalks from the
courgettes, then cut each in half
lengthways and then again. Put
the courgettes on an oven tray. In
a bowl, mix together the honey,
olive oil, mint and a grinding of
black pepper. No salt yet. Finely
chop the thyme leaves. Peel and
crush the garlic to a paste then
stir the thyme and garlic into the
honey and oil.
Pour the dressing over the
courgettes, toss them well, then
roast for 20-25 minutes till
the courgettes are tender and
toasted, turning once during
cooking. Remove from the oven
and season with the ground
paprika, a generous crumbling of
sea salt, the sultanas and the pine
kernels. Return to the oven for
5-7 minutes.
Place in a serving dish with the
ricotta.
Courgettes with
lemongrass and coconut
cream
This is best when you allow
the dressing to crisp lightly on
the courgettes. Once they are
pale gold, add the pak choi and
coconut milk and bake till the
courgettes are nicely toasted.
DEPENDABLE:
Mix hearty,
in-season
courgettes
with ricotta or
coconut cream
for sumptuous,
syrupy flavours.
PHOTO: GETTY
Ingredients
Serves 2-3 with rice
35g ginger
4 cloves of garlic
2 fat stalks of lemongrass
2 bird’s eye chillies
1 tsp ground turmeric
½ tsp sea salt flakes
6 Tbsp groundnut oil
500g courgettes
2 plump heads of pak choi
3 spring onions
200 ml coconut cream
Serve with steamed brown rice
Method
Peel and roughly chop the ginger
then put it in a food processor.
Peel the garlic and add to the
ginger. Remove the outer leaves
of the lemongrass and tough
ends of the stalks, then chop and
add to the bowl.
Slice the chillies in half lengthways,
remove the stalks and
seeds then add to the ginger with
the turmeric and sea salt flakes.
Process to a thick paste, pouring
in the oil as the blades turn. Set
the mixture aside (it will keep for
several days, tightly covered, in
the fridge).
Preheat the oven to 200 deg C.
Line a roasting tin with kitchen
foil. Wipe the courgettes and
slice them thickly (1cm coins)
then put them in a bowl. Add the
paste and toss to lightly cover the
courgettes then place them in the
foil-lined roasting tin. Bake for
25 minutes.
Meanwhile, cut each head
of pak choi into four down the
length and finely chop the spring
onions. Toss the pak choi and
onions together then, when the
courgettes have been cooking for
25 minutes, add the vegetables
and coconut cream and toss
gently together.
Return the tin to the oven and
continue cooking for a good 15-
20 minutes until the pak choi is
tender (the stems should retain
some crunch, with the leaves
soft), the courgettes golden.
Serve in bowls with the steamed
rice.
End of an era for Mazda’s long-serving ute
MAZDA ISN’T one of the heavy
hitters in our ute arena, but has
undeniable longevity, competing
with varying degree of success in
this market since the mid 1960s.
Up until 2020, the BT50 was
the not-so-well-known twin
of the hugely successful Ford
Ranger, in a model share deal
between Mazda and Ford. For
the current Ranger, Ford opted
out of this arrangement and
instead partnered with European
automotive heavy hitter
Volkswagen, with the current
Ranger the donor vehicle for the
latest Volkswagen Amarok.
Mazda was hardly flush
with offers from other vehicle
manufacturers keen to join forces
with them on a new ute. After a
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
bit of speed-dating, they tied the
collaboration knot with Isuzu
in a union of two of the smallest
manufacturers of Japanese
utes. Essentially the BT50 is
the current D-Max with some
cosmetic changes.
It seems Mazda’s days in
our ute market are numbered,
having clocked up around 58
years. The latest shipment of
BT50s is reportedly the last.
Mazda NZ deleting the BT50
from their catalogue is due to a
variety of factors including the
huge rise in the popularity of
SUVs, and increasingly tougher
engine emission standards.
The BT50 will still be sold in
Australia.
You can have your BT50 in
Ratings out of 10: Performance 7 Handling 7; Build Quality
7; Comfort 6; Passenger and Load Space 7; Styling 7; Value
for money 6; Safety – Five Star ANCAP crash rating.
Overall points out of 10: 7
any configuration as long as it’s
a double cab, but you do have
the choice of three specification
levels, starting with the GSX. For
this road test we check out this
model in $57,290 4WD form.
In the engine bay is a familiar
face and one tough customer in
Isuzu’s long serving and durable
turbocharged 3.0L four-cylinder
diesel.
These days it makes a handy,
but hardly class-leading, 140kw
of power. The 450Nm of torque
on tap is below the class average
500Nm most buyers are looking
for, but on the credit side of
the ledger it is as smooth and
refined as most of its rivals. It
showed plenty of energy and
endeavour to comfortably handle
the toughest on and off road
assignments.
If you want a ute that’s relaxing
to drive over long distances, and
who doesn’t, few do it better than
this one. A lot the kudos for this
is down to the BT50’s well-sorted
six-speed automatic that puts in a
consistently good gear-changing
shift, no matter the task.
A well-proportioned cab
provides plenty of leg and
headroom, and the seats are
supportive and comfy, with no
complaints from the passengers I
had on board.
For an entry-level model the
GSX is fairly well suited up.
A touch screen infotainment
system supports both Apple
CarPlay and Android Auto,
while a multi-information
display provides key driving
information.
The balance between ride
comfort and road holding is as
good as you will find among the
current crop of utes, apart from
the class leading Ford Ranger.
This has been achieved
without compromising durability
and strength, with the GSX
offering plenty of both, with a
heavier duty rear suspension
arrangement in recognition of it
being more of a work orientated
ute.
In GSX trim the firmer rear
spring make the low speed ride
over uneven surfaces fidgety.
However, the test ute cornered
confidently with the enjoyment
heightened by well-weighted and
communicative steering.
