THOUSANDS OF dollars of 

prizes will be up for grabs at the 

Les Mills City2Surf on Sunday. 

Entries will be taken on the day. 

Smiths City is putting up a 

smart TV, portable bluetooth 

speaker and headphones set, plus 

thousands in vouchers will be 

given away. 

The South Island’s largest fun 

run offers two distances – 6km 

and 12km –with both routes 

finishing in New Brighton. 

The 12km route starts first, in 

Latimer Square at 9am, and the 

6km in Porritt Park at 9.45am. 

This year’s event has one of the 

largest prize pools ever for lucky 

entrants. Prize winners will be 

drawn randomly from entrants’ 

bib numbers. Spot prizes will also 

be given away. 

Thousands of dollars worth of 

Thermatech and Brooks Running 

vouchers are up for grabs, plus 

smart watches and gear from 

Fitness New Zealand. 

The Christchurch Casino, 

Sport Canterbury, Canterbury 

University and Musashi will be 

providing spot goodies for lucky

Drone to 

look for 

rockfall 

risk

A DRONE will survey parts of 

Clifton Hill to ensure there is no 

danger of rockfall. 

It comes after a boulder fell 

down the hillside, crashing several 

barriers through Mulgans 

Track. 

It is unknown whether anyone 

was walking the track at the 

time of the rockfall. 

The city council says it was an 

isolated incident. 

A spokesperson said the geotechnical 

team believe the rock 

was likely rubble dislodged by 

the 2011 earthquakes which got 

caught in vegetation. 

Then more recently the vegetation 

may have died, causing 

the rock to fall. 

“Our geotechnical engineer 

has had a thorough ground 

investigation and concluded 

that this was a blue sky event, 

which is not expected to repeat 

as there is no significant source 

material above the track,” said 

the spokesperson. 

The engineer has recommended 

a drone survey be 

carried out later this week to remove 

any lingering uncertainty 

for the public.

Masters sold the cinema to the

Using the clinker boat method 

invented by the Vikings, Lyric 

was built by renowned Governors 

Bay boatbuilder Lionel 

Jefcoate in 1974. 

It was sold to the Rout family 

in 1985, before Cornish bought it 

in 2004 after Jonty Rout died. 

“It was looking a bit rough. So 

I thought that was a job for me 

to fix it up and it could be a bit 

of fun.” 

ON THE MOVE: Well known Governors Bay daysailer Lyric is 

up for sale. 

Since the second-last moored 

boat left the bay about 10 years 

ago, Cornish says Lyric has become 

a local symbol. 

“If I had a dollar for every time 

I’ve seen Lyric in a picture of the 

bay, I could buy a car.” 

He said most people in Governors 

Bay have their boats parked 

on their properties these days, so 

Lyric is a reminder of a bygone 

era. 

Cornish is willing to sell Lyric 

cheap if a reliable person, capable 

of maintaining the boat, expresses 

interest. 

“If there’s a person in Governors 

Bay who wants to take it on 

that would be brilliant, but it’s 

got to go somewhere.” 

As an older boat, Lyric requires 

regular cleaning and Cornish 

says a paint job is due. 

“It’s just getting harder and 

harder for me to do it and I’m 

hoping there’s someone out there 

up for the task.” 

Cornish uses Lyric for day trips 

where he mostly travels the same 

route around Quail Island and 

back to Governors Bay. 

“Sailing is very therapeutic. 

You’re just trying to get best out 

your boat that you can.”

His hapū is Ngāti Wheke from 

Rāpaki, where the waka is being 

stored after it was transported 

from Okains Bay. 

Kōtukumairangi was built by 

Okains Bay Museum founder 

Murray Thacker in 1990, alongside 

builders from Ngāi Tahu 

ahead of the 150-year anniversary 

of the Treaty of Waitangi. 

It is Ngāi Tahu’s only traditional 

waka. 

“We want to have the opportunity 

to profile our whole maritime 

history and experiences,” 

said Nuk Korako, co-chair of 

the Rāpaki SailGP governance 

committee. 

The captains will be welcomed 

onto several Ngāi Tahu waka in 

the bay during a pōwhiri and 

be given a traditional Māori 

challenge as they row towards 

Rāpaki marae. 

Korako said the captains will 

then be welcomed onto Rāpaki 

marae in a similar ceremony to 

the SailGP opening last year.

Keen rower takes up the oars to 

raise funds for a worthy cause 


A MONCKS Bay resident has 

paddled for charity as part of 

Rowing for Life, an event with 

the goal of rowing the length of 

New Zealand’s east coast. 

Deb Hymers-Ross saw a 

chance to use her rowing skills 

for a good cause. 

“Anything to do with rowing 

I’m very interested in, but most 

important is the charities that 

we’re raising money for with this 

journey.” 

The 63-year old made her contribution 

to the overall distance 

goal as part of a five-person 

rowboat crew travelling from 

Peraki Bay to Long Bay and then 

from Sumner Beach to Waikuku 

Beach. 

Rowing for Life was created 

by Invercargill rower Ian 

Hamilton to raise funds for the 

Lions Club Cancer Trust, Child 

Cancer Foundation, Starship 

Foundation and Surf Lifesaving 

New Zealand. 

The rowers stopped rowing 

and checked in at the Sumner 

Surf Lifesaving Club last Tuesday 

after bad weather interrupted

the journey from Peraki Bay to Waikuku Beach last week as part of a team of five rowers.

The Ferrymead Lions Club and 

surf lifesavers treated the rowers 

to food and encouragement after 

completing a leg of their journey. 

“The Lions are so lovely, really 

welcoming. They were really 

interested in the boat and its 

dimensions and they have a 

worthy cause that will benefit 

from this journey.” 

The experience has been 

enjoyable for Hymers-Ross 

despite some weather delaying 

parts of the trip. 

“The other rowers set a really 

nice pace and I’ve found myself 

joining in really easily.” 

Hymers-Ross said coastal 

rowing was chosen for the 

fundraiser because of the 

resurgence the sport is having in 

international competitions. 

“It’s something new and a little 

bit different.” 

Raised funds will be split 

evenly between the recipient 

charities. 

The Lions Club Cancer Trust 

is fundraising to purchase a skin 

cancer screening bus which will 

help provide tests to people in 

rural areas nationally.

A staggering 22,000 fans are 

set to witness heart-pumping 

action and near misses just 

metres from the shoreline at 

Te Nukutai o Tapoa, Naval 

Point, making it the most 

ticketed sail racing event the 

world has seen! 

GETTING TO AND 

FROM THE EVENT 

The fastest, most sustainable and most reliable 

way for SailGP ticketholders to get to and from 

the event will be via official shuttles, included in 

the price of all ticket categories. These FREE 

shuttles will depart from the city centre transport 

hub located outside Te Pae on the corner of 

Oxford Terrace and Armagh St and will return 

to this location after racing with the first bus 

departing Lyttelton at 4:30PM. 

In Season 4, SailGP will also implement a shuttle 

running between the SailGP Race Stadium at 

Naval Point and Lyttelton township. This will 

enable SailGP ticket holders to visit Lyttelton 

before or after racing if they wish, and experience 

the vibrancy Lyttelton has to offer! Lyttelton locals 

can also use this service to get to and from the 

event site if they have a ticket. 

The Lyttelton loop shuttle will be clearly 

signposted from the event site and will drop 

off/pick up from the existing bus stop outside 

Lyttelton Primary School on Oxford Street. 

ROAD CLOSURES AND 

RESTRICTIONS 

Public access to Lyttelton will be limited with 

road closures and restrictions in place from 

12pm - 6pm Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 March, 

with entry to Lyttelton blocked from Sumner 

and Governors Bay, and there will be no access 

to Lyttelton via Tunnel Road at Port Hills Road. 

Between the controlled period, only emergency 

vehicles, official event vehicles (buses and 

branded shuttles), taxis and vehicles with a 

clearly-displayed pass will be able to access 

Lyttelton. 

Lyttelton residents and businesses will be able to 

access their homes and workplaces during the 

controlled period via Bridle Path Road on both 

days using an allocated vehicle access pass, 

distributed via mail to all affected households. 

Cycle access to Lyttelton will not be affected by 

the restrictions and at all times traffic will be able 

to leave Lyttelton via the Tunnel, Governors Bay 

Road and Evans Pass Road. Emergency vehicles 

will be able to pass through road closures at all 

times, as will public buses.

Book highlights impact of 


marine noise pollution 


HEATHER McQuillan wants to bring 

attention to the impacts of noise pollution 

on marine life with her new children’s 

book. 

The Sumner author is a primary school 

teacher turned writing tutor. She believes 

connecting with children through stories 

can help them better understand issues in 

the world. 

McQuillan says “you have to be in touch 

with your inner child” when writing about 

serious topics for young people. 

“Of course many things have changed 

from when I was young, but those 

concepts of identity and belonging are still 

very relevant.” 

Her new book Avis and the Call of the 

Kraken was released on March 1. 

It is the sequel to her 2019 book Avis 

and the Promise of Dragons, which won a 

Storylines notable junior fiction award. 

The plot follows 11-year-old Avis as she 

learns how to grow up, care for her pet 

dragon and help prevent harm to mythical 

sea creatures near her coastal home. 

McQuillan’s story was partly inspired by 

living close to Sumner beach and hearing 

the sound of ships travelling past. 

“Some nights you could hear this thrum 

of the engines as they were waiting to get 

into port. I thought ‘gosh that noise is so 

annoying to me’.” 

The idea for her story was born,

SuperValue Sumner completes Stage 1 of its renovation. 

In Stage 1, customers will notice a move into the new 

building, which houses most of the new retail space for 

the store. The aisles are not fully completed, but they 

have been designed to allow movement within the store 

while further construction is underway. The checkouts 

and liquor area will be temporarily relocated to where 

the produce department used to be. A temporary entry 

to the store is where the exit used to be. 

Stage 1 is set for opening on week commencing 

March 18th. 

Looking ahead, Stage 2 will see the construction of 

a new Bottle store in the unused portion of the old 

supermarket. The current Bottle store will remain open 

during this stage. Supermarket operations 

will continue as usual, with new products being 

introduced gradually. 

Stage 2 is scheduled to be completed by the 

beginning of May. 

In Stage 3, the Bottle store will move into its new 

premises, and in its place the new supermarket 

entrance and exit, will be constructed. Additionally new 

manned and self-scan checkouts will be installed in this 

space. Finally the the liquor area will be completed, 

and the store will be ready to rebrand as a FreshChoice 

Supermarket. 

Stage 3 is slated for completion by mid to 

late June.

Venue: Naval Point in Whakaraupō Lyttelton Harbour is the 

event hub for all pre and post-racing action with plenty of 

programming for event ticket holders to enjoy. 

TRANSPORT: 

The most reliable, efficient and sustainable way to get to the 

ITM New Zealand Sail Grand Prix will be via official event 

shuttles, included in the price of all ticket categories. 

These FREE shuttles will depart from the city centre 

transport hub located outside of Te Pae on Oxford Terrace off 

Gloucester Street and will return to this location after racing 

with the first bus departing Lyttelton at 4:30pm. 

There will be a bus transfer from LYT to the event site which 

will travel on a continuous loop between these locations to 

support the Lyttelton township to drive patronage. This will 

be included in all ticket-holder communications.

The highly anticipated ITM New Zealand Sail Grand Prix 

| Christchurch is approaching fast, the world’s top sailors 

will be flying across Whakaraupō Lyttelton Harbour in 

high-performance F50 catamarans at the end of this 

month! So how can you make the most of a day out to 

watch the exciting close-to-shore racing? 

If you’ve already scored your SailGP ticket, you can enjoy 

Lyttelton’s hospitality before and after the racing. SailGP 

has confirmed a shuttle bus service looping between 

Naval Point and Lyttelton town on race days, Saturday 

March 23 and Sunday March 24.
