Drone to
look for
rockfall
risk
• By Dylan Smits
A DRONE will survey parts of
Clifton Hill to ensure there is no
danger of rockfall.
It comes after a boulder fell
down the hillside, crashing several
barriers through Mulgans
Track.
It is unknown whether anyone
was walking the track at the
time of the rockfall.
The city council says it was an
isolated incident.
A spokesperson said the geotechnical
team believe the rock
was likely rubble dislodged by
the 2011 earthquakes which got
caught in vegetation.
Then more recently the vegetation
may have died, causing
the rock to fall.
“Our geotechnical engineer
has had a thorough ground
investigation and concluded
that this was a blue sky event,
which is not expected to repeat
as there is no significant source
material above the track,” said
the spokesperson.
The engineer has recommended
a drone survey be
carried out later this week to remove
any lingering uncertainty
for the public.
Mt Pleasant
resident John
Atkins walks
the track during
weekdays with
his men’s walking
group.
“It could have
been disastrous
if someone was
there. You can
John Atkins
see what it did to the fences,” he
said.
He believes the drone survey
is a good idea.
“Anything to keep the track
safe and open. After all, we use
it a lot.”
Beyond Hope
From an Auckland prison to changing lives in
Afghanistan by Bariz Shah
A powerful story of how one man didn’t let other people define him
At age 18, Bariz Shah ended up in an Auckland prison. As an
Afghan migrant who was deeply affected by 9/11, Bariz spiralled
from schoolyard fights into crime and drugs - until prison made
him rethink the story of his life.
Years later, in Christchurch, Bariz had turned everything around
when a terrorist walked into the local mosque and took the lives of 51
people in his community. Driven by a new purpose, Bariz and his wife Saba
raised money to return to Afghanistan and establish 51 small businesses in honour of
those they lost.
In this memoir about finding self-belief, belonging and positive change, Bariz’s story
reminds us that we always have the power to change ourselves for the better.
‘Bariz gifts us his truth-telling, delivered with unwavering optimism.’ Matt Brown,
author of She Is Not Your Rehab
‘Bariz has been through adversity and emerged with love, care and kindness. He
shows that nothing is impossible.’ Meng Foon, Race Relations Commissioner 2019-
Sisterhood
by Cathy Kelly
Two sisters. One secret. A journey to learn who they really are…
The instant Irish number one bestseller!
As the waves crash on to a wild Atlantic beach, Lou is at a crossroads. For the first
time ever, just giving up seems like an option. In just one night, at her own 50th
birthday, her world has imploded. Her mother has kept a secret hidden all her life.
And it changes everything. Before Lou can take another step, she needs to get to the
bottom of the shocking truth that alters who she really is. Along with her sister, Toni,
who is facing her own crisis, the two women sets out on a life-changing journey – one
that will take them through Ireland’s wildest coastline and to Sicily’s sun-baked rocky
shores. It will also take Lou deep into her relationships with her mother, her sister and
her daughter to figure out how to stop pleasing everyone else – and carve out who she
really wants to be.
‘I really, really loved it. I think it’s her best book so far, written with maturity and
great compassion. The characters are very relatable, Lou was my favourite . . . I
enjoyed this book so much’ MARIAN KEYES
MAJOR renovations to the
Hollywood Cinema in Sumner
are under way.
Contractors from Bushnell
Builders have torn down the
front canopy facing Marriner St
as part of the first stage of the
makeover.
“It’s been a long time coming,
so it’s good to see things finally
under way,” said project manager
Andy Wilkinson.
Built in 1938, the oldest cinema
in Christchurch will become
part of the high-end Silky Otter
Cinemas chain.
It was owned by cinema pioneer
Lang Masters for more than
six decades. He died, aged 92, in
August last year.
Masters sold the cinema to the
Doig family in September 2021,
who are leasing it to Silky Otter.
Wilkinson said the construction
part of the renovation
will hopefully be complete in
December with the opening date
yet to be determined.
“What we’re figuring out right
now is how the tenant’s needs
are going to integrate with that.
They have to install the seating,
the audiovisual equipment and
the fit out of the bar.”
It will be determined in
the coming weeks whether
Waxing lyrical: Iconic
NEWS 7
daysailer up for sale
• By Dylan Smits
THE LAST boat moored in
Governors Bay is an icon of the
area. Now it is going on sale –
and the owner prefers selling
local.
Ross Cornish
is 75, and as he
ages he’s finding
it more difficult
to maintain his
classic daysailer
Lyric.
Ross
Cornish
He is content
letting it go.
“I’ve had my
fun with it. The
boat needs to move on because
I’m moving on.”
The 24ft boat has a kauri hull
and a roof fashioned from uncommonly
used kaikawaka.
Using the clinker boat method
invented by the Vikings, Lyric
was built by renowned Governors
Bay boatbuilder Lionel
Jefcoate in 1974.
It was sold to the Rout family
in 1985, before Cornish bought it
in 2004 after Jonty Rout died.
“It was looking a bit rough. So
I thought that was a job for me
to fix it up and it could be a bit
of fun.”
ON THE MOVE: Well known Governors Bay daysailer Lyric is
up for sale.
Since the second-last moored
boat left the bay about 10 years
ago, Cornish says Lyric has become
a local symbol.
“If I had a dollar for every time
I’ve seen Lyric in a picture of the
bay, I could buy a car.”
He said most people in Governors
Bay have their boats parked
on their properties these days, so
Lyric is a reminder of a bygone
era.
Cornish is willing to sell Lyric
cheap if a reliable person, capable
of maintaining the boat, expresses
interest.
“If there’s a person in Governors
Bay who wants to take it on
that would be brilliant, but it’s
got to go somewhere.”
As an older boat, Lyric requires
regular cleaning and Cornish
says a paint job is due.
“It’s just getting harder and
harder for me to do it and I’m
hoping there’s someone out there
up for the task.”
Cornish uses Lyric for day trips
where he mostly travels the same
route around Quail Island and
back to Governors Bay.
“Sailing is very therapeutic.
You’re just trying to get best out
your boat that you can.”
JOURNEY: The waka en route from Okains Bay to Rāpaki
in preparation for the opening of SailGP.
Waka readies for SailGP
• By Dylan Smits
THE OKAINS Bay waka
Kōtukumairangi will lead the
seaborne welcome to foreign
captains at the start of SailGP.
Craig Pauling
is the kaihautū
or waka leader
for the welcoming
ceremony
on Thursday,
March 21.
“It’s about
Craig
Pauling
revitalising all
our traditions
and activities
around waka. It gives us the
opportunity to show that to the
world and show an organisation
like SailGP what can be done
working with indigenous people,”
he said.
His hapū is Ngāti Wheke from
Rāpaki, where the waka is being
stored after it was transported
from Okains Bay.
Kōtukumairangi was built by
Okains Bay Museum founder
Murray Thacker in 1990, alongside
builders from Ngāi Tahu
ahead of the 150-year anniversary
of the Treaty of Waitangi.
It is Ngāi Tahu’s only traditional
waka.
“We want to have the opportunity
to profile our whole maritime
history and experiences,”
said Nuk Korako, co-chair of
the Rāpaki SailGP governance
committee.
The captains will be welcomed
onto several Ngāi Tahu waka in
the bay during a pōwhiri and
be given a traditional Māori
challenge as they row towards
Rāpaki marae.
Korako said the captains will
then be welcomed onto Rāpaki
marae in a similar ceremony to
the SailGP opening last year.
Keen rower takes up the oars to
raise funds for a worthy cause
• By Dylan Smits
A MONCKS Bay resident has
paddled for charity as part of
Rowing for Life, an event with
the goal of rowing the length of
New Zealand’s east coast.
Deb Hymers-Ross saw a
chance to use her rowing skills
for a good cause.
“Anything to do with rowing
I’m very interested in, but most
important is the charities that
we’re raising money for with this
journey.”
The 63-year old made her contribution
to the overall distance
goal as part of a five-person
rowboat crew travelling from
Peraki Bay to Long Bay and then
from Sumner Beach to Waikuku
Beach.
Rowing for Life was created
by Invercargill rower Ian
Hamilton to raise funds for the
Lions Club Cancer Trust, Child
Cancer Foundation, Starship
Foundation and Surf Lifesaving
New Zealand.
The rowers stopped rowing
and checked in at the Sumner
Surf Lifesaving Club last Tuesday
after bad weather interrupted
FUNDRAISER: Deb Hymers-Ross took up the challenge of Rowing for Life and joined in
the journey from Peraki Bay to Waikuku Beach last week as part of a team of five rowers.
their journey around Banks
Peninsula.
The Ferrymead Lions Club and
surf lifesavers treated the rowers
to food and encouragement after
completing a leg of their journey.
“The Lions are so lovely, really
welcoming. They were really
interested in the boat and its
dimensions and they have a
worthy cause that will benefit
from this journey.”
The experience has been
enjoyable for Hymers-Ross
despite some weather delaying
parts of the trip.
“The other rowers set a really
nice pace and I’ve found myself
joining in really easily.”
Hymers-Ross said coastal
rowing was chosen for the
fundraiser because of the
resurgence the sport is having in
international competitions.
“It’s something new and a little
bit different.”
Raised funds will be split
evenly between the recipient
charities.
The Lions Club Cancer Trust
is fundraising to purchase a skin
cancer screening bus which will
help provide tests to people in
rural areas nationally.
Book highlights impact of
Wednesday March 13 2024 Bay Harbour News
marine noise pollution
• By Dylan Smits
HEATHER McQuillan wants to bring
attention to the impacts of noise pollution
on marine life with her new children’s
book.
The Sumner author is a primary school
teacher turned writing tutor. She believes
connecting with children through stories
can help them better understand issues in
the world.
McQuillan says “you have to be in touch
with your inner child” when writing about
serious topics for young people.
“Of course many things have changed
from when I was young, but those
concepts of identity and belonging are still
very relevant.”
Her new book Avis and the Call of the
Kraken was released on March 1.
It is the sequel to her 2019 book Avis
and the Promise of Dragons, which won a
Storylines notable junior fiction award.
The plot follows 11-year-old Avis as she
learns how to grow up, care for her pet
dragon and help prevent harm to mythical
sea creatures near her coastal home.
McQuillan’s story was partly inspired by
living close to Sumner beach and hearing
the sound of ships travelling past.
“Some nights you could hear this thrum
of the engines as they were waiting to get
into port. I thought ‘gosh that noise is so
annoying to me’.”
The idea for her story was born,
imagining a kraken affected by noisy
human activity.
“That’s the issue at the heart of the story,
exploring the effect noise has on these
creatures.”
A 2015 study from the United States
based National Institutes of Health found
underwater noise pollution can cause
hearing loss for marine mammals and
interfere with their migration and breeding.
The most common causes of underwater
noise pollution are oil exploration, shipping
and military activity.
STORYTELLER:
Heather McQuillan
hopes young readers
will connect with
the setting and
environmental
theme of her new
children’s book, Avis
and the Call of the
Kraken.
“It’s got all sorts of implications for the
health of sea creatures but I wanted to
write that message in a way kids could
relate to.”
The setting is purposely vague but has
clear references to Sumner and Lyttelton
Harbour, which McQuillan said can
help children connect to the story’s
environmental theme.
“I wanted younger readers to be able
to say ‘this is something I recognise’. It’s
so important for them to be able to see
themselves in stories.”
REAL ESTATE
Exceptional lifestyle
or development
8 Harmans Road, Lyttelton
Price by negotiation,
28,049m² Land
Listing no. RH1245
Wednesday March 13 2024 Bay Harbour News 21
ADVERTISING FEATURE
Welcome to paradise and a genuine,
once in a lifetime opportunity to secure
28,049sqm of prime Lyttelton hillside land
to either conserve, develop, or to build your
lifestyle dream.
Available is a phenomenal land size
of 28,049 sqm, or 2.80 hectares, or 6.93
acres. Either way you look at it, this is
an exceptional lifestyle, conservation or
development opportunity. Potentially this
represents the largest raw development land
parcel left to be made available in Lyttelton.
Property is available for sale with no
services to site. Existing landowners have
undertaken considerable investigations
into the redevelopment potential of the
site, including the creation of easements
over neighbouring land for future access to
services.
Zoned lifestyle, with rockfall
management areas and 160m contour line
restrictions, surveyors have drawn plans for
an eight-lot subdivision. Comparable titled
sections of 1,200sqm on the market today,
are currently asking more than $390,000.
Based on those numbers, it doesn’t take
long to calculate the value in developing the
land further.
For conservationists and philanthropists,
the local community have been using part
of the land to develop mountain bike and
walking tracks, which are evidently well
used. Integrating the land back into natural
Port Hills reserve, complete with native
lizards in situ, is an opportunity to explore.
Having invested eighteen years into
the site, our owners are pragmatic about
passing this project over to another,
who has the enthusiasm to finish the
development dream. If that sounds like
you, then let’s chat about the potential you
envision.
SuperValue Sumner completes Stage 1 of its renovation.
In Stage 1, customers will notice a move into the new
building, which houses most of the new retail space for
the store. The aisles are not fully completed, but they
have been designed to allow movement within the store
while further construction is underway. The checkouts
and liquor area will be temporarily relocated to where
the produce department used to be. A temporary entry
to the store is where the exit used to be.
Stage 1 is set for opening on week commencing
March 18th.
Looking ahead, Stage 2 will see the construction of
a new Bottle store in the unused portion of the old
supermarket. The current Bottle store will remain open
during this stage. Supermarket operations
will continue as usual, with new products being
introduced gradually.
Stage 2 is scheduled to be completed by the
beginning of May.
In Stage 3, the Bottle store will move into its new
premises, and in its place the new supermarket
entrance and exit, will be constructed. Additionally new
manned and self-scan checkouts will be installed in this
space. Finally the the liquor area will be completed,
and the store will be ready to rebrand as a FreshChoice
Supermarket.
Stage 3 is slated for completion by mid to
late June.
