Wardens playing crucial role as 

cost of living continues to bite 

AN EASTERN suburbs 

organisation is stepping up to 

support those in the community 

feeling the pinch of rising costs. 

The Ōtautahi Māori Wardens 

is collecting, packing, and distributing 

up to 80 food parcels 

weekly, delivering any leftovers 

to community pantries in the 

east. The wardens’ kaupapa of 

‘one parcel, one car’ means those 

in need are offered immediate 

relief with weekly necessities, 

and they support as many people 

as possible with every delivery. 

Data from Stats NZ shows 

the cost of living for the average 

household increased 7.4 per cent 

in the year ending September 

2023. Grocery food was a significant 

contributor to this, rising 

11.1 per cent. 

Wardens kaiwhakahaere 

(chair) Jacqui Te Wani said when 

the organisation first started 

filling the community pantries 

and food parcels, it was low 

to just below middle-income 

families which typically sought 

assistance. 

Since Covid, the demand 

for support has extended to 

include middle-income earners 

and above, and the pressure on 

households means people are 

travelling further afield for help. 

“What we’re seeing now is 

people outside of the east that 

are coming,” Te Wani said. “It’s 

not just this side; we are seeing 

them from Shirley, Riccarton, 

wherever.” 

Unfortunately for the wardens, 

their food supplier closed permanently 

before Christmas, and 

they have been trying to find an 

alternative to meet community 

demand. 

“Demand around Christmas 

was especially high as this is 

a challenging time for many 

whānau. The reality is if we had 

more supplies, the number of 

food parcels we distribute could 

easily be up to 140 every week.” 

Providing access to food for 

people in need is not the only 

way the wardens wrap their arms 

around the communities they 

serve. 

Volunteers are active at a range 

of community events, from 

large-scale festivals to tangi, or 

simply by providing one-on-one 

support to a community member 

who may be struggling. They 

offer security, day and night 

patrol, traffic control, cultural 

assistance, and other essential 

services, such as transportation, 

to vulnerable communities. 

“When we rock up to an event, 

and people see Ōtautahi Māori 

Wardens, they have an automatic 

perception they’re safe,” Te Wani 

said. 

Her daughter Rawinia has 

been a warden since she was 13. 

She was the youngest warranted 

warden and is now the head 

funding co-ordinator. 

Rātā Foundation has provided 

funding to Ōtautahi Māori 

Wardens for several years, 

including support with costs for 

a van to ensure they can make its 

deliveries.

Walking with grief after double cancer blow

JADE BELL’S solution to 

grief was to walk with it, after 

winning her cancer battle but 

losing her partner to the disease. 

To continue her walk, Bell will 

participate in the Relay for Life 

on Saturday as a solo participant 

for the 12-hour event. 

Bell, 44, was diagnosed 

with hodgkins lymphoma on 

Christmas Eve 2004 and after 

undergoing treatment in 2005, 

was able to beat the cancer. 

“The cancer is behind me. I 

do have a couple of health issues 

now that are treatment-related 

from the radiation and chemo,” 

she said. 

Bell was hoping to put the 

disease behind her, but that 

proved not to be. In 2022 she lost 

her partner of almost 18 years, 

John Wood, to pancreatic 

cancer. 

“John died on October 25, a 

day before our 18th anniversary 

and three days before his 

birthday.” 

Bell said his battle was 

“horrific”. 

“We only had two-and-a-half 

months from finding out that 

he had cancer to his passing 

so everything happened really 

quickly. 

“We hadn’t long been together 

when I was diagnosed and he 

helped me through my cancer 

and my treatment. So it was 

really lovely to be able to care for

him, but really hard to know that 

I wasn’t going to be able to help 

him through,” Bell said. 

After John died, Bell began 

walking. 

“I joined the Walk1200km 

challenge soon after he passed, 

and last year I walked over 

2400km. 

“I don’t say it helped me 

through my grief, I say I walk with 

my grief.” 

At first, she started walking 

around her Templeton neighbourhood, 

continuing her journey 

around the hills. 

“I spent many hours walking 

over the Port Hills, which was just 

amazing. I quite often say when 

you’re on a track like that you 

don’t feel alone but sometimes you 

can be in a room crowded with 

people and feel quite alone.” 

Bell’s first Relay for Life was last 

year when her friends invited her 

to complete a lap. This year 

it will be a bit different as she 

aims to complete a minimum 

of 40km and could walk up to 

70km. 

“I really want to do as much 

I can for the Cancer Society 

because they don’t receive any 

Government funding and the 

work they do is priceless,” she 

said. 

For Bell, the event offers her a 

chance to remember John. 

“It is another challenge to keep 

me moving forward, to remember 

John and other loved ones who 

lost the battle, to celebrate my 

survival and support those 

fighting.”
