Cinema’s new lease of life
• By Dylan Smits
MAJOR renovations to the
Hollywood Cinema in Sumner
are under way.
Contractors from Bushnell
Builders have torn down the
front canopy facing Marriner St
as part of the first stage of the
makeover.
“It’s been a long time coming,
so it’s good to see things finally
under way,” said project manager
Andy Wilkinson.
Built in 1938, the oldest cinema
in Christchurch will become
part of the high-end Silky Otter
Cinemas chain.
It was owned by cinema
pioneer Lang Masters for more
than six decades. He died, aged
92, in August last year.
Masters sold the cinema to
the Doig family in September
2021, who are leasing it to Silky
Otter.
Wilkinson said the construction
part of the renovation will
hopefully be complete in December
with the opening date
yet to be determined.
“What we’re figuring out right
now is how the tenant’s needs
are going to integrate with that.
They have to install the seating,
the audiovisual equipment and
the fit out of the bar.”
It will be determined in the
coming weeks whether Silky
Otter can refurbish the interior
at the same time as the construction
work, Wilkinson said.
Three 48-seater luxury cinemas
and a bar will be created.
Wilkinson said the back end
of the building will be extended,
making room for an additional
cinema to complement the
previous two.
The city council issued a
building consent in November.
Bushnell Builders was selected
as the contractor last month.
Before major structural work
can begin, asbestos in the walls
and ceilings will be removed.
Then new foundations for
the existing building and the
extension will be constructed.
“There’s quite a lot of work
that’s got to be done inside
with the structure before that
rear wall can be taken out,”
Wilkinson said.
The neighbouring Coffee
Culture, which is attached
to the building, will also be
renovated with designs still in
the planning stage, he said.
The owner of Sumner Bar
and Grill next door, Shubham
Kumar, welcomed the start of
the renovations.
“It will definitely be good. If
customers go there, they will
come here too.”
closing
for new
fit out
SPREYDON Library is shutting
its doors for six weeks while
the city council refurbishes the
building.
The Barrington St library will
be closed from 1pm on Saturday,
March 23 until Sunday, May 5. It
will reopen on Monday, May 6.
During the closure, the building’s
interior and exterior will
be painted, windows will be
replaced, new carpet will be
installed and the layout will be
enhanced.
While the
library is closed,
reserved items
will be available
to collect from
during this period,
but can be returned to any
other library across the city.
City council head of libraries
and information Carolyn Robertson
said while library users may
be disrupted by the closure, the
building’s refurbishment is much
needed.
“We are looking forward to
welcoming our library users
back in May to an updated and
enhanced building as part of
our regular renewal programme
across all our facilities,” she said.
Walking with grief after double cancer blow
• By Daniel Alvey
JADE BELL’S solution to
grief was to walk with it, after
winning her cancer battle but
losing her partner to the disease.
To continue her walk, Bell will
participate in the Relay for Life
on Saturday as a solo participant
for the 12-hour event.
Bell, 44, was diagnosed
with hodgkins lymphoma on
Christmas Eve 2004 and after
undergoing treatment in 2005,
was able to beat the cancer.
“The cancer is behind me. I
do have a couple of health issues
now that are treatment-related
from the radiation and chemo,”
she said.
Bell was hoping to put the
disease behind her, but that
proved not to be. In 2022 she lost
her partner of almost 18 years,
John Wood, to pancreatic
cancer.
“John died on October 25, a
day before our 18th anniversary
and three days before his
birthday.”
Bell said his battle was
“horrific”.
“We only had two-and-a-half
months from finding out that
he had cancer to his passing
so everything happened really
quickly.
“We hadn’t long been together
when I was diagnosed and he
helped me through my cancer
and my treatment. So it was
really lovely to be able to care for
ON TRACK: Jade Bell
started walking after the
death of her partner, and
last year walked more than
2400km.
him, but really hard to know that
I wasn’t going to be able to help
him through,” Bell said.
After John died, Bell began
walking.
“I joined the Walk1200km
challenge soon after he passed,
and last year I walked over
2400km.
“I don’t say it helped me
through my grief, I say I walk with
my grief.”
At first, she started walking
around her Templeton neighbourhood,
continuing her journey
around the hills.
“I spent many hours walking
over the Port Hills, which was just
amazing. I quite often say when
you’re on a track like that you
don’t feel alone but sometimes you
can be in a room crowded with
people and feel quite alone.”
Bell’s first Relay for Life was last
year when her friends invited her
to complete a lap. This year
it will be a bit different as she
aims to complete a minimum
of 40km and could walk up to
70km.
“I really want to do as much
I can for the Cancer Society
because they don’t receive any
Government funding and the
work they do is priceless,” she
said.
For Bell, the event offers her a
chance to remember John.
“It is another challenge to keep
me moving forward, to remember
John and other loved ones who
lost the battle, to celebrate my
survival and support those
fighting.”
• Relay for Life runs from
10am-10pm on Saturday at
Brookside Park, Rolleston.
Riding Sumner’s waves brings boost
• By Dylan Smits
AS A SURFING couple ages,
their bond has been strengthened
by their commitment to
riding the waves.
Peter Garrett and Jazelle
Alderdice live in Clifton and say
surfing at Sumner Beach keeps
them mentally and physically fit
as they get close to retirement.
“The main goal for me is to
keep myself in shape and keep
being able to go out. I’ll take
what comes every day and
continue enjoying what comes,”
said 74-year-old Garrett.
“I quite often get out of bed
and go down and have a surf
and then come home in time for
breakfast.”
He introduced Alderdice, 64,
to surfing at Orewa beach near
Auckland soon after they met.
“He pushed me onto a wave
and he said to me, ‘this is going
to be the best experience of your
life.”
She was not convinced.
“When I started riding on the
wave, standing up on it for the
first time, I thought, ‘oh my god,
this is the best experience of my
life’.’”
Like Garrett, Alderdice has no
plans to stop surfing.
“As long as I can manage to
hold my board up and my body
can handle it, of course I’ll keep
going.”
The couple met at a festival in
2010 and found a connection.
DEDICATED: 74-year-old Peter Garrett has been surfing at Sumner for more than 20 years.
Garrett and partner Jazelle Alderdice find many ways to stay active and enjoy nature
together.
“We both love food and being
in the natural world. We have
maturity as people to, you know,
not sweat the small stuff,” said
Alderdice.
Alderdice also stays active
through cycling and tramping,
but the couple still find time to
surf together.
“We can share the experience
and talk about the waves,” said
Alderdice.
Surfing is Garrett’s main
hobby after starting later in life
when he was 51.
“When I was a beginner I was
not very good, but I always work
actively on improving myself. So
I’ve enjoyed the journey of slowly
catching up with others.”
He’s surfed in Byron Bay in
New South Wales and beaches
in Bali, but Garrett says Sumner
Beach is his personal favourite.
He first enjoyed the soft but
steady nature of the waves at
Sumner when he was introduced
to longboarding by a friend.
“It’s probably one of the best
beaches in the world,” he said.
“Consequently it’s busy in the
summertime. Sometimes you
can see 60 to 80 surfers lined up
along the beach.”
Alderdice said it is a great spot
for older surfers.
“There’s really good, gentle
waves, but you can still have
fun.”
Garrett revels in selecting a
wave at the beach and executing
a surf.
“I’m always quite hungry for
waves.”
He has a passion for health
and wellbeing, both physically
through surfing and mentally
through his career as a
hypnotherapist.
“You’ve got to look after your
health. If you want to keep going
in older age.”
Surfing is not Garrett’s only
method of staying fit. He also
enjoys cycling, tramping and
gardening.
to health and wellbeing for couple
Throughout his career he has
seen a growing understanding
of the link between physical and
mental health.
“People realise that their
nutrition and their exercise, and
their time outdoors always factors
into the journey back into a state
of wellbeing.”
Garrett’s said his active hobbies
are critical for maintaining good
mental health, a message he tries
to impart to his clients.
“If I wasn’t able to do those
things, I’d be less happy. I’m
very connected in to the natural
world.”
He is partially retired and
winding down operations at his
hypnotherapy business.
Alderdice shares her partner’s
love of the beach environment.
“It’s this dance with nature.
It’s the joy of the balance and the
grace it requires.”
She mostly uses a stand-up
paddleboard.
“I was older when we started
and I knew I wouldn’t have
the back or arm strength for
longboarding, so I’ve stuck with
the paddleboard.”
Alderdice is working part time
as a psychotherapist and will
retire within the next few years.
Like Garrett, she sees a strong
connection between good physical
and mental health.
“There’s something about the
movement and the balancing that
really helps my mental health and
keeps me in a good place.”
SURFS UP: Peter Garrett, left and Jazelle Alderdice riding the waves at Sumner.
Garrett has two adult children
and five grandchildren from a
past relationship. He hopes to pass
on the surfing spirit.
“My youngest grandson is seven
years of age. I’ve got a little foamy
board lined up for him.”
Surfing as he gets older presents
some difficulties but Garrett says
he is up for the challenge.
“Going from lying down to
standing on your feet require a
degree of agility and so you’ve got
keep yourself in shape.”
Garrett surfs several days a
week and finds it beneficial for
maintaining mental sharpness
and good psychological health.
“For people who spend time out
in water, it has an effect which is
very much like meditation.”
He said some of his most
memorable surfs have been at
Whitewash Head.
“It’s great, you get a big wave
and you’re just cruising on this
mountain moving through the
water.”
Garrett considers himself lucky
to have got away with only a few
cuts and bruises throughout his
time surfing, but there is one close
call he still thinks about.
In 2013, Garrett had finished
surfing in Muriwai, near
Auckland.
“I got back into the car and was
driving home and the radio came
on. They talked about a shark
attack and someone had been
killed. That happened probably
20 minutes after I came out of
the water, only about 400m from
where I’d been.”
He was not discouraged from
surfing by the incident and he has
returned to Muriwai since, despite
some added caution.
There is little discussion of
sharks among surfers in Sumner,
said Garrett.
“You tend to feel a bit more
conscious of it when you’re the
only one out, but if there’s 40
other people out that changes the
odds a bit.”
Alderdice is usually
unconcerned by sharks, but said
the 2013 incident was scary.
“I heard on the radio that there
was a shark attack at the beach
that he was surfing at. I heard
from him soon after but it was
very frightening.”
Since his partial retirement,
Garrett has more time to focus on
improving his skills.
He is also considering rejoining
the Sumner Longboarders Club as
he gets more time for surfing.
The couple’s advice to older
people who might want to
try surfing is to start with
paddleboarding.
“Take it slowly. If you choose
the wrong board you can make
life very difficult for yourself,” said
Garrett.
Alderdice recommends surfing
to all.
“The fact that there’s now standup
paddleboarding means it is
easier for people to get into, no
matter what age.”

Tiny SUV packed with pep and personality
ALONG WITH the new
generation Jimny and the Ignis
are the funky, fun and affordable
members of the otherwise staid
Suzuki NZ model line-up.
They are the smallest new
SUVs sold but have giant sized
personalities. Alongside the
popular Swift hatch, they are
driving the brand’s continuing
strong sales growth.
With a unique design and
trendy, yet slightly retro,
appearance, the Ignis made a
triumphant return in 2016 after
a long absence, having an almost
immediate and positive impact.
Distinctive SUV looks, a
roomy cabin, plus sharp pricing,
meant it ticked a lot of boxes for
those on a budget.
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
The Ignis gets runs on the
board right away with its cute
front end, chunky wheel arches
and eye catching angled roofline.
I like how the styling touches
pay homage to previous Suzuki
models from the mists of time.
These include the “C” pillar
slits from the 1970s Giugiarodesigned
Fronte coupe, while the
clamshell-shaped bonnet and
guard garnish are a nod to the
original 1988 Vitara SUV.
The three-strong model lineup
leads off the $22,990 GLX
manual with a $1500 premium
for the automatic. The higher
spec LTD reviewed here is only
available as an automatic sells for
$26,500.
A 1.2 litre 4-cylinder, 16-valve
Incorporating
www.drivesouth.co.nz
double overhead camshaft engine
is common across all three
models. This multi-point fuel
injected power plant has variable
valve timing technology and
produces 66kW and 120Nm of
torque at 4400rpm.
Dualjet engine technology
engine reduces emissions. It does
this brilliantly, with the manual
producing just 107 grams per
litre of CO2, and the automatic
slightly more at 114 grams per
litre. These figures better several
hybrids costing considerably
more than the humble Ignis.
While these aren’t the
ingredients for fire breathing
performance, the engine
has sufficient flexibility and
responsiveness to satisfy most
owners without sending their
pulses racing.
Acceleration is lively and the
motor shows far more tenacity
than its modest capacity would
suggest. However, at higher revs
it does become coarse and lumpy.
The automatic in the test car
proved smooth and efficient in
lower speed urban driving. At
open road pace it’s less agreeable,
proving slow to kick down under
hard acceleration when you need
that extra burst of power.
The cabin is modern, inviting
and offers a decent amount of
space for a diminutive hatch.
There is plenty of head and leg
room for both front and rear
occupants, while good ground
clearance makes it easy to enter
and leave.
The LTD is well appointed
with cruise control, power
steering, electric windows and
electric mirrors. A computer
displays fuel consumption, sixspeaker
audio system, Bluetooth
audio-streaming and hands-free
calling.
Playful and surprisingly
composed road holding are
a good fit with the vehicle’s
effervescent personality.
However, being taller and
narrower than other cars in
this class, body lean enters the
handling frame sooner when
nudging things along through
tight corners or over undulating
terrain. This only becomes worse
if you continue to unreasonably
push the vehicles handling
limits. A plus for urbanites is
the vehicle’s excellent turn-ona-dime
4.7 metre turning circle,
that makes light work of U-turns
in narrow streets.
