Teen track stars eyeing
spots at world champs
• By Sam Coughlan
TWO YOUNG middle
distance runners are chasing
qualification for the junior
world championships – one on
the back of a national record.
Cooper Wightman, 16,
and Daniel Prescott, 17, will
compete in the 1500m at the
U20 national championships,
starting in Wellington today.
Wightman is a year 12
student at Christchurch Boys’
High School while Prescott
finished up at St Thomas’ last
year and will be attending
college in the United States on
an athletics scholarship from
August.
Wightman recently broke
the national U17 record for the
800m in a time of 1:50.46 at
the International Track Meet at
Ngā Puna Wai, a race in which
Prescott set a personal best.
Last year Wightman also set
the record for the fastest time
as a 15-year-old New Zealander
in the 800m.
But neither will run the
800m at the U20 nationals.
Instead they are competing
in the 1500m, with the heats
on Saturday and the final on
Sunday, because it is more of
stacked field.
The junior world
championships will be held in
August in Lima, Peru.
Wightman said it would
mean a lot to represent his
country if he got the chance.
“One of my goals from
when I started running was to
represent New Zealand. So, just
keep pushing away at it and
we’ll just see how it goes.”
Despite both having achieved
the required qualifying time in
the 1500m, they are far from
confirmed to take part.
Seven runners have achieved
the qualifying time, but
Athletics New Zealand can
only select two to compete
internationally.
It makes this weekend’s race
essentially a straight shootout.
“I don’t know if there’s ever
been that many other runners
that have ran that so it’s just
based off whoever gets top-two
at nationals,” said Wightman.
Cycleway
planning
gets started
despite calls
for delay
• By Sasha Watson
A FIVE-WEEK-long investigation
into the $19 million Wheels to
Wings cycleway started this
week, despite the Government’s
draft proposal to cut funding for
transport projects.
City council staff are looking
into Bishopdale roads to help plan
a construction approach for the
cycleway.
It is concurrent with
investigations into a replacement
water main on Harewood Rd and
wastewater pipes on Chapel St and
Sails St as well as installing traffic
lights at the Langdons and Greers
Rd intersection.
Papanui Ward city councillor
Victoria Henstock said it is
irresponsible to proceed with the
investigation into the cycleway.
“The city council relies on cofunding
from NZTA for over 95
per cent of its transport projects
so NZTA’s funding decision
will determine whether W2W
proceeds.
“Harewood Ward city councillor
Aaron Keown and myself
proposed an amendment in the
Long Term Plan for all works on
the cycleway to be halted pending
full disclosure of the updated costs
and confirmation of funding from
NZTA.
“Our amendment failed with the
majority of councillors voting in
favour of continuing this.”
Cinema’s new lease of life
• By Dylan Smits
MAJOR renovations to the
Hollywood Cinema in Sumner
are under way.
Contractors from Bushnell
Builders have torn down the
front canopy facing Marriner St
as part of the first stage of the
makeover.
“It’s been a long time coming,
so it’s good to see things finally
under way,” said project manager
Andy Wilkinson.
Built in 1938, the oldest
cinema in Christchurch will become
part of the high-end Silky
Otter Cinemas chain.
It was owned by cinema
pioneer Lang Masters for more
than six decades. He died, aged
92, in August last year.
Masters sold the cinema to
the Doig family in September
2021, who are leasing it to Silky
Otter.
Wilkinson said the construction
part of the renovation will
hopefully be complete in December
with the opening date
yet to be determined.
“What we’re figuring out right
now is how the tenant’s needs
are going to integrate with that.
They have to install the seating,
the audiovisual equipment and
the fit out of the bar.”
It will be determined in
the coming weeks whether
VISION: Work has started on the Hollywood Cinema in
Sumner. Below – an artist’s impression of the cinema
after it is converted into part of the Silky Otter Cinema
chain.
Silky Otter can refurbish the
interior at the same time as the
construction work, Wilkinson
said.
Three 48-seater luxury cinemas
and a bar will be created.
Wilkinson said the back end
of the building will be extended,
making room for an additional
cinema to complement the
previous two.
The city council issued a
building consent in November.
Bushnell Builders was selected
as the contractor last month.
Before major structural work
can begin, asbestos in the walls
and ceilings will be removed.
Then new foundations for
the existing building and the
extension will be constructed.
“There’s quite a lot of work
that’s got to be done inside
with the structure before that
rear wall can be taken out,”
Wilkinson said.
The neighbouring Coffee
Culture, which is attached
to the building, will also be
renovated with designs still in
the planning stage, he said.
The owner of Sumner Bar
and Grill next door, Shubham
Kumar, welcomed the start of
the renovations.
“It will definitely be good. If
customers go there, they will
come here too.”
Community
board chair’s
resignation
on the table
• By Chris Barclay
HELEN Broughton’s future as
chair of the Waipuna Halswell-
Hornby-Riccarton Community
Board should be clarified today,
despite her resignation from the
role following
pressure from
colleagues.
Although the
city’s longestserving
local
government
politician tendered
her resignation
ahead of the
board’s monthly
meeting, standing down was
Helen
Broughton
contingent on Broughton being
able to act as board spokesperson
on planning and housing
intensification.
Broughton, who has represented
Riccarton on the board since 1995,
included that caveat, which was set
to be a major talking point on this
afternoon’s agenda.
If her stipulation is denied she
planned to revoke her resignation,
exacerbating an impasse.
Appointed unopposed as chair
in 2022 elections, Broughton’s
final term before retirement came
under scrutiny following a difficult
meeting on February 15.
Mixed Messages in
the Current Market
Whether it’s the newspaper, the television
or online commentary, there’s currently
plenty of optimism around the property
market and – to be fair – it’s contagious.
But the real question we need to ask
ourselves is whether it’s true.
Let’s face it, after the rollercoaster of the
past four years, including the highest price
increases ever seen post-Covid and a harsh
correction in 2023, who doesn’t want to
celebrate just a little? But I’m of a mind we
need to take a pause and reflect.
So, why don’t we dive in together, look at
what’s happening locally and then decide
what’s fact, fiction or even conjecture?
Because it’s all there!
Here’s what I’m currently seeing …
Let’s start with listing numbers, which are
up.
As are auction numbers. Our own company
currently has some 74 auctions booked for
the month ahead at the time of writing and
this is creating significant buyer interest.
Although the number of auctions reflects a
strong push by people to be on the market
in February, it’s by no means unusual.
Who doesn’t dream at Christmas and
through the New Year of changing
direction, whether that means purchasing
instead of renting, upsizing, downsizing
or leaving the city? So, I’m not one for
jumping to conclusions based on the
current increase in available properties.
It’s definitely seasonal and this summer
momentum can often be seen ebbing in
the autumn months of April and May.
But here’s something not so customary
of late: being pleasantly surprised by the
number of those auctions brought forward
(a term used when the owners receive an
unconditional offer that brings everything
forward from the scheduled auction date).
It’s a sign that people don’t want to wait
because they fear competition – and that
happens when there are more buyers
around. Only this week, out of a catalogue
of 19 properties, we had four that were
brought forward, and all had additional
strong, competitive bidding. Tears, smiles
and applause from those in the busy room
followed.
Attendances at open homes are also up, as
are multiple offers, so these three elements
are certainly supportive of a strengthening
market which owners, realtors and the
media are taking heart from.
Now let’s look at what I’m currently
hearing.
Most of us have short memories and it’s
easy to slide into a belief pattern that all
is well and prices will jump back to those
extraordinary figures we came to expect
two years ago. For context, prices across
New Zealand peaked in November 2021,
then were seen to drop by almost 18% to
bottom-out in May of last year.
Since then, they have increased by 4%
according to statistical data up until
December of last year.
So, it’s a cautious journey and although
banks and others are sticking with low
growth figures, there’s still room for
optimism – though it needs to be mixed
with realism too.
Finally, what am I thinking?
There is still a world of pain out there for
many people.
Increased interest rates are hurting and
that’s across every demographic. Banks are
proving extremely pedantic in what they
expect of their clients. It means that some
people are finding it too tough to hang on.
Despite the promise of Brightline and tax
deductibility changes, that includes recent
landlords. And other vendors are preferring
to downsize rather than struggle with hefty
monthly mortgage payments.
There’s also a belief that we are likely at
the bottom of the market and good times
are around the corner, in which case now
is the time to buy. For the entrepreneurial
amongst us, this is a signal to hunt hard for
opportunities.
It’s always a crystal-ball game and mine
is a little cloudy at the moment, so I’d
encourage anyone making a property
decision to get good advice, keep your
expectations intact and, if you’re selling,
hope that you just might have a property
that causes people to applaud your result.
After all, this market might be exactly right
for your circumstances and yours might
be one of the good news stories that we’re
starting to see.
Investigation work questioned
in face of possible funding cut
• From page 1
Henstock said the budgets in the
LTP are based on the original costings,
which are now out of date.
“Those figures are misleading.
We have been told that on average
our transport projects have
increased by about 27 per cent
so we can reasonably expect the
W2W project costs to increase
substantially.”
She said many people were
confused about the project’s status,
with media reporting earlier in
the Long Term Plan process that
council staff had proposed the
cycleway be deferred, due to it not
being a priority project.
“The public generally were not
aware the project was back in the
LTP.
“Now they see a CCC Newsline
article and social media post about
investigative works soon to be undertaken.
Residents are now asking
how can this project continue
if funding is not available.’’
Canterbury Charity Hospital
chief executive Carl Shaw said the
hospital board was not looking
forward to seeing the project
continue.
City council city infrastructure
general manager Jane Parfitt said
it is common practice that detailed
investigations are commissioned
in advance of construction, which
will not start until later this year.
PLANNING: Investigations
into potential construction
plans for the Wheels to
Wings cycleway have
started. The investigation will
also look into water system
upgrades on Harewood Rd
and traffic light installation
at the Greers and Langdons
intersection.
When Copenhagen Bakery
owner Donna Thomsen was
approached for a comment by
Norwest News, it was the first time
she had heard about the investigations
going ahead and she said she
couldn’t comment further without
having all the facts.
NZ rep
dream
closer for
athletes
• From page 1
“They will get the advantage for
selection, so it really just comes
down to one race.”
The pair represent Selwyn at club
meets and are coached by former
New Zealand Commonwealth
Games representative Angie Petty
and her partner, Briton Sam Petty.
Angie Petty said it would be
‘insane’ if the pair were to qualify
together.
“Of those runners (that have
made the qualifying time), Daniel
is second-fastest and Cooper is
fourth,” she said.
“But Cooper ran his in a local
event while all the rest were in
big meets like (the Sir Graham
Douglas International in Auckland
last weekend).
“It’s easier to run faster in those
big meets with other runners
around you and I know Cooper’s
got more in him.”
Wightman said the prospect was
exciting.
“It’s just down to one simple race,
who comes out better on that day.
“I quite like that instead of
having points and stuff where you
have to worry about all the races
you’re running.”
Ryman’s Northwood village ticking all the boxes
CHOOSING Northwood
Retirement Village has worked
out very well for David and
Eileen Jorgensen, allowing for
pastimes including David’s
passion for outdoor spaces.
His volunteer work in a nearby
memorial garden allows him
to both stay part of the wider
community, and to keep fit.
When the couple decided
to sell their lovely home in
Rangiora, they eyed up a couple
of Canterbury villages – and
are now very happy with their
Ryman Healthcare choice at
Northwood.
They love that they get all-day
sun in their swish townhouse
and that they can keep up a
social whirl in both their village
setting and within their existing
circle of friends from Rangiora
and Christchurch.
David has been keeping busy
with his gardening tools. As
well as tackling the garden and
vege patch that surrounds their
home, he has recently started
volunteering at Belfast-based
Otukaikino, a living memorial
garden that allows people to
honour their loved ones after
they’ve passed away.
There is also an Otukaikino
walk, that gives people a chance
to walk around a 13-hectare
freshwater wetland reserve.
David says there is always
weeding to do at Otukaikino,
even in the winter season.
“The weeds keep growing. . .
HAPPY HOME: Eileen and David Jorgenson couldn’t be happier with their decision to
relocate to Ryman Healthcare’s village at Northwood.
And Otukaikino can really use
people to volunteer.”
Gardening is a way to keep
active while working with others
on a worthwhile project. His
friend Ian Pitt, whom he has
known since their children were
in scouts together, alerted him to
the project and has built seats for
the large garden space.
Eileen says the couple moved
into the Northwood village
in mid-September last year,
following their house sale. The
couple agree it has a great aspect
looking onto the gardens outside
a set of apartments within the
village.
“I think we’ve got one of the
pick of the setups. We get the sun
all day,” David says.
“Here there is an amazing
group of people with similar
thoughts.”
He has reflected on what the
couple have in terms of a safety
net. He’s talked to friends of
their age and they agree people’s
health and retirement needs can
change very quickly.
David says he can maintain
his fitness through weeding
some of the gardens near their
townhouse, and he also helps
with other gardens for friends on
the east side of Christchurch.
“I don’t see gardening as work
really. I enjoy it as it helps me
keep fit and I like things being
tidy,” he says.
It is also the people who are
important at Northwood, and
these include fellow residents
and the wonderful village team,
who help organise outings and
events such as the once a week
Happy Hour for residents.
“They’re brilliant. . . couldn’t
be better,” he says of the staff.
He and Eileen like the ‘lockup
and leave’ aspect of the
village.
Eileen, for example, has
recently been on a trans-Tasman
cruise, and the couple plan to
fly into Cairo in April for an
Egyptian getaway including a
cruise on the Nile river.
Eileen says she loves the
atmosphere of the village: “It’s
like being on holiday all the
time. It’s great.”
Sales advisor Sharyn Wilson
says it has been a privilege to
welcome the Jorgensens among
the first residents to move
into the village in the north of
Christchurch.
“Watching the village
transform at the rate it has
continues to add to the
excitement here,” Sharyn says.
“It’s been wonderful seeing
our village grow and watching
our residents form new
friendships. We truly have so
many lovely people moving in.”
am to 4:00 pm, the store welcomes both
trade professionals and the general public
to explore this unique selection of painting
and decorating items.
Serves 4
Ingredients
1 shallot or ½ medium white onion,
sliced
1 Tbsp coconut oil or mild olive oil
1 large piece of fresh root ginger (about
3cm), peeled and grated
2 cloves garlic, grated
1 green chilli, deseeded and chopped
1 tsp mustard seeds
1 tsp ground coriander
1 tsp ground cumin
1 tsp ground turmeric
300g dried black/brown lentils
1 × 400ml tin of coconut milk
200g Swiss chard, washed and roughly
chopped
Natural or dairy-free yoghurt, to serve
(optional)
Fresh coriander, chopped
Directions
In a shallow saucepan, fry the shallot
or onion in the coconut or olive oil over
a medium heat for 5 minutes, until it
starts to soften and caramelise, stirring occasionally.
Add the ginger, garlic and chilli and all
of the spices, and fry for another 5 minutes,
stirring often.
Mix in the lentils, coconut milk and
650ml water.
Bring to the boil, reduce the heat and
simmer for about 40–50 minutes, stirring
occasionally, until the lentils are soft and
the water absorbed. Add the Swiss chard
and cook for 5 minutes, until wilted.
Directions
Preheat the oven to 150degC
fan/170degC.
Spread the drained beans on a baking
tray and bake for 15 minutes until slightly
dried out. (This is important.) Add the oil to
a medium-large saucepan over a mediumhigh
heat. Add the pepper, shallot or onion,
mushrooms, garlic, cumin, paprika and
mixed herbs and saute for around 8 minutes
until soft. Remove from the heat and set
aside to cool a little.
Place the sauteed vegetables and all the
remaining ingredients, including a good
pinch of salt and grind of pepper, in a large
food processor and pulse until combined,
leaving some larger chunks.
Using wet hands (as it helps prevent the
mixture sticking), shape the mixture into
6 patties (each roughly 8–10cm). Line a
baking tray with parchment paper and place
the patties on top. Put the tray in the fridge
for a couple of hours, to help the patties stick
together.
Preheat the grill to a medium heat or the
oven to 190degC fan 210degC.
If grilling, drizzle a little olive oil over the
patties and place them under the grill for
8 minutes. Turn them over, then grill for 4
minutes on the other side, checking every
few minutes as every grill is different. They
should look a little golden.
If baking, drizzle a little olive oil over
the patties, then bake in the oven for 10
minutes.
Flip them over and bake for a further 10
minutes.
Tiny SUV packed with pep and personality
ALONG WITH the new
generation Jimny and the Ignis
are the funky, fun and affordable
members of the otherwise staid
Suzuki NZ model line-up.
They are the smallest new
SUVs sold but have giant sized
personalities. Alongside the
popular Swift hatch, they are
driving the brand’s continuing
strong sales growth.
With a unique design and
trendy, yet slightly retro,
appearance, the Ignis made a
triumphant return in 2016 after
a long absence, having an almost
immediate and positive impact.
Distinctive SUV looks, a
roomy cabin, plus sharp pricing,
meant it ticked a lot of boxes for
those on a budget.
www.drivesouth.co.nz
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
The Ignis gets runs on the
board right away with its cute
front end, chunky wheel arches
and eye catching angled roofline.
I like how the styling touches
pay homage to previous Suzuki
models from the mists of time.
These include the “C” pillar
slits from the 1970s Giugiarodesigned
Fronte coupe, while the
clamshell-shaped bonnet and
guard garnish are a nod to the
original 1988 Vitara SUV.
The three-strong model lineup
leads off the $22,990 GLX
manual with a $1500 premium
for the automatic. The higher
spec LTD reviewed here is only
available as an automatic sells for
$26,500.
A 1.2 litre 4-cylinder, 16-valve
Ratings out of 10: Performance 6 Handling 7; Build Quality
7; Comfort 6; Passenger and Load Space 6; Styling 7; Value
for money 7; Safety – No ANCAP crash rating.
Overall points out of 10: 7
Incorporating
best motorbuys
double overhead camshaft engine
is common across all three
models. This multi-point fuel
injected power plant has variable
valve timing technology and
produces 66kW and 120Nm of
torque at 4400rpm.
Dualjet engine technology
engine reduces emissions. It does
this brilliantly, with the manual
producing just 107 grams per
litre of CO2, and the automatic
slightly more at 114 grams per
litre. These figures better several
hybrids costing considerably
more than the humble Ignis.
While these aren’t the
ingredients for fire breathing
performance, the engine
has sufficient flexibility and
responsiveness to satisfy most
owners without sending their
pulses racing.
Acceleration is lively and the
motor shows far more tenacity
than its modest capacity would
suggest. However, at higher revs
it does become coarse and lumpy.
The automatic in the test car
proved smooth and efficient in
lower speed urban driving. At
open road pace it’s less agreeable,
proving slow to kick down under
hard acceleration when you need
that extra burst of power.
The cabin is modern, inviting
and offers a decent amount of
space for a diminutive hatch.
There is plenty of head and leg
room for both front and rear
occupants, while good ground
clearance makes it easy to enter
and leave.
The LTD is well appointed
with cruise control, power
steering, electric windows and
electric mirrors. A computer
displays fuel consumption, sixspeaker
audio system, Bluetooth
audio-streaming and hands-free
calling.
Playful and surprisingly
composed road holding are
a good fit with the vehicle’s
effervescent personality.
However, being taller and
narrower than other cars in
this class, body lean enters the
handling frame sooner when
nudging things along through
tight corners or over undulating
terrain. This only becomes worse
if you continue to unreasonably
push the vehicles handling
limits. A plus for urbanites is
the vehicle’s excellent turn-ona-dime
4.7 metre turning circle,
that makes light work of U-turns
in narrow streets.
