March 20, 2024 42 I BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT I MID RIVERS NEWSMAGAZINE Logan University opens Women’s Health Specialty Clinic Logan University now features a Women’s Health Specialty Clinic at Montgomery Health Center in Chesterfield. The new clinic, which opened in January, is dedicated to providing patientcentered, evidence-based care tailored specifically for women. Logan is the first chiropractic institution worldwide to house a Women’s Health Specialty Clinic on its premises – a testament to Logan’s commitment to excellence in health, education and service, said Kristina Petrocco-Napuli, DC, MS, DHPE, FICC, FACC, Associate Provost for the College of Chiropractic at Logan. It was Petrocco-Napuli who championed the idea for the Women’s Clinic. “...We know that the majority of our patients are female – and there’s been a real shift in what the patient needs as well as what they want. We’re seeing more demand from females seeking chiropractic care for health conditions specific to women,” she said. The new clinic was also important because of Logan University’s role “training practitioners to be experts in their field,” Petrocco-Napuli said. “(It) was something we wanted to demonstrate as a model so students have more Dr. Emily Kliethermes opportunities to specialize their practice.” Through adjustment and/or acupuncture treatment, the Women’s Health Specialty Clinic may be able to help alleviate symptoms related to neuromusculoskeletal conditions including, but not limited to bone health, chronic pain management and headaches. In addition, plans for the Women’s Health Clinic include being a resource for women for menstrual issues and during pregnancy. The Women’s Health Clinic is led by Dr. Emily Kliethermes, DC, a seasoned professional with more than 25 years of expertise in chiropractic care. Dr. Kliethermes has owned and operated her own chiropractic practice, served as an independent contractor and associate and taught in higher education. “It is important that women in all stages of life are heard and symptoms are taken seriously,” she said. “I am excited to help women live their best life in all stages with chiropractic, acupuncture, nutritional counseling and lifestyle modifications.” “If you are having menstrual issues (painful periods, irregular cycles, infertility or menopausal) pain during regular daily activities, migraines or are worried about bone density we may be able to help,” Dr. Kliethermes said. “We have the DEXA scan to monitor bone health and body composition. Acupuncture and muscle work to help relieve cramps and other menstrual problems. And, of course, chiropractic to help with any aches and pains of daily living.” One area of focus for the Women’s Health Clinic is being a resource of care during pregnancy. “We help get the body ready for pregnancy by making sure the pelvis is structurally in place. We check the spine for misalignments,” Dr. Kliethermes said. As some mothers experience severe @MIDRIVERS_NEWS MIDRIVERSNEWSMAGAZINE.COM morning sickness in the first trimester, Dr. Kliethermes provides resources about nutrition and things that may reduce those symptoms. “As the body changes to accommodate the growing baby, we work with her to make sure the spine and pelvis are aligned. We also talk about nutrition, exercises and what she can do at home,” she said. The third trimester is the time that women are usually pretty uncomfortable. “The change in their body and center of gravity can cause low back pain, mid back pain and muscle strain. Unfortunately, there is little over the counter medicine that is allowed during pregnancy so we are a resource for pain relief.” “We are here to assist the moms anyway we can in all stages of pregnancy.” Petrocco-Napuli hopes that the clinic helps women achieve their health and wellness goals and the practitioners meet them at the level they are expecting from their care.
