she went on to major (decision) her.
“At Wonder Woman (tournament), the
girl who was No. 6 in the nation took her
down, but Kailey went on and won 9-2.
This season, she’s beaten kids who had
seven state titles and two who were runnerups.
She’s pretty special.”
Kruse is glad to have her back for
another season.
“They don’t get much better than her,”
Kruse said. “She’s a quiet, reserved girl.
She does not draw attention to herself.
She’s modest, humble and brilliant. She
has a 4.5 GPA.
“She has a wonderful sense of humor.
She has great parents. They let us coach
her and they’re supportive of all of our
kids.”
Junior Nevaeh Smith (130), senior
Sophie Johnson (135) and junior Dana
Thee Sanchez (155) all won their thirdplace
matches.
“Smith and Sanchez, we’d hoped they’d
win a state championship,” Kruse said.
“Smith was disappointed. I told her she was
amazing. She’d beaten three state champions
this year. She got caught by Halea
Bartel from Nixa and lost by one point
at 6-5. I was proud of her.
They’ll take that (semifinal)
match so hard that
they’ll lose the next match
but she rebounded and did
what she had to do.”
Sanchez is in her second
year of wrestling for the
Spartans.
Johnson didn’t wrestle
as a freshman. Kruse said
she’s about 125 pounds
and wrestles up to 135.
Senior Alanah Braun
(190) came in fourth. Two
seniors – Stevie Lupo
(115) and Katelyn Guth
– each wound with fifthplace
finishes.
The school has honored
the team.
“We had a big assembly.
It was pretty cool,” Kruse
said. “There was a lot of
excitement. We’ll be going
in front of the (school) board. We’ve been
invited to Jeff City to get a proclamation
by the legislators.”
This is a long way to come when only 15
girls came for that first team.

wrestling,” Kruse said. “She wrestled the
year before when there was girls wrestling
and she was wrestling the boys.”
Going into the second day, the Spartans
had clinched a trophy but they wanted
more.
“We had seven going for medals,” Kruse
said. “We were seven points
behind Nixa and two ahead of
Lebanon. I asked them ‘What
trophy do you want to go
home with?’ We had second
in our hands and in our control.”
The Spartans responded by
winning five of six matches.
“One of the coolest
moments came from my
115-pounder Stevie Lupo,”
Kruse said. “She said, ‘Coach
my dream was just a medal. I
want a medal for my wall. I
was ready to quit and accept
my sixth place medal but you
said we had to fight for each
other.’
“And she did. She found a
way to pin her opponent and
get the medal.”
Kruse is looking forward to
next season.
“Our future looks good,”
Kruse said. “We’ve got four returning
qualifiers. We will be bringing back a state
champion and two third-place finishers.
The girls who were hurt will be back. We
have some young girls who can step up.
We’ve got some kids in the wings.”
