Road
closure
frustrates
residents
• From page 1
SailGP said in correspondence
with residents the road closure
was “designed to manage the flow
of traffic, parking, emergency
access, resident access and
transport options for ticket
holders”.
It said addresses in the closed
areas would be mailed a pass
allowing access from Lyttelton in
late February or early March.
SailGP did not respond to
questions from Bay Harbour
News about why it was necessary
to restrict access to residents,
especially those who live close to
Dyers Pass Rd, or if alternative
options had been considered.
On its website it said the traffic
management plan had been
prepared with input from the city
council, ChristchurchNZ, Waka
Kotahi, local businesses and other
stakeholders.
Lyttelton residents will also be
blocked from entering the suburb
through Sumner and Governors
Bay and only allowed access
through Tunnel Rd, Bridle Path
Rd and Ferry Rd.
Borrow a library surfboard
• By Dylan Smits
BORROW a board and bring it
back in two weeks – that is the
concept behind New Zealand’s
first surfboard library in
Sumner.
“We’re putting it out there for
people who have never tried it
before for free,” said co-founder
Lucas Sampaio.
The Goat Shed library on
Nayland St is looking for
donations of decent quality
surfboards to bolster its stocks.
Sampaio and another Sumner
resident Carlos Alonso came up
with the idea in 2020 and have
slowly opened the library up to
the public.
“We believe that building
slowly, we’ll be able to build a
bigger foundation for something
in the future,” Sampaio said.
He hopes the concept of
the library, which is run by
volunteers, spreads across New
Zealand.
“I believe and advocate for
every town in New Zealand
having a library because it
would increase the stoke and the
level of surfing and happiness,”
Sampaio said.
A key priority of the library is
to increase sustainability in the
sport.
The volunteers are not looking
for broken surfboards, but
can repair and recycle them
for future use. “Most of the
surfboard industry of the big
brands have boards that are
quite breakable and they don’t
last more than a year or two. We
try to repair as many boards as
we can and put them out there
and take care of them.”
Sampaio said they will assess
the difficulty of repairing a
board before it is accepted for
donation.
Experimentation is
encouraged, with Sampaio
hoping people will try out
different types of surfboards
from the library to find what
they enjoy.
“You don’t need to go out and
buy five different boards. You
can borrow what you need at the
time.
“If you know the forecast
(waves are) going to be a bit
bigger or smaller then you can
come and borrow a different
board for that specific week.”
The library operates under
an honour system, with people
signing an agreement promising
to return the surfboards they
borrow.
Sampaio credited the
Sumner Community Residents’
Association and Hub for
providing the library with a
garage at 57 Nayland St.
Tug society
holds out
hope
• From page 1
“We really don’t want to
consider the fact we might not get
the funding,” said Bruce.
“We all believe we’re going to
have a breakthrough moment.”
The society is hopeful the tug
will receive the necessary funding
and refit within a year.
A givealittle page has been set
up to help crowdfund, but this
has only brought in small sums
to date.
Bruce said the tug will need
much larger grants to achieve its
funding goal.
Despite the challenges, it could
be years until the society calls it
quits on the tug as long as members
stay passionate and keep up
basic maintenance, said Bruce.
The preservation society’s
trained volunteers maintain the
tug at weekly sessions, which
Bruce said have a “phenomenal
turnout”.
The $300,000 refit is only the
start of a long-term plan for a
$1.5 million modernisation of the
vessel.
This would include a new
rear canopy, visual aids and
information for tour guests, and
an interior renovation to make the
tug more attractive for visitors.
THE LYTTELTON steam tug
has a 116-year-long history.
Built in 1907 by the Ferguson
Brothers firm in Glasgow, it came
to Lyttelton via the newly completed
Suez Canal. It served as
the port’s main tug until World
War 2.
Group sets sights on green energy future
• By Dylan Smits
SOLAR PANELS on city council
buildings and communityowned
energy are part of the
grand vision of the new Lyttelton
Energy Transition Society.
The group was first
conceptualised in October by
bays residents who want to see a
faster local transition to cheaper
and greener energy.
“Our focus is on climate
change, renewables and the lack
of ability in the current energy
sector to address
climate change,”
said committee
member Thomas
Kulpe.
The society
was recently
registered and
is awaiting
approval for
charitable status.
Thomas
Kulpe
One of the group’s first goals
is to help finance solar panels for
city council facilities, especially
the Lyttelton Recreation Centre.
“That has the purpose
of increasing resilience in
Lyttelton if there were prolonged
power outages like in Cyclone
Gabrielle,” Kulpe said.
The society wants to partner
with the council and energy
companies to make these
installations happen.
SUN POWER: One of the society’s first goals is to install solar panels on Lyttelton’s city
council facilities such as the recreation centre.
“We will hopefully be able to
finance panels through grants or
through crowdfunding.”
Kulpe hopes Lyttelton
residents will get behind the
vision and the society’s longterm
goal of more communityowned
energy.
“We have the idea of having
public talks and workshops in
Lyttelton and hopefully raise
interest and awareness.”
The society is inspired by
micro-grid communities in
Australia and Europe, where
large residential areas have their
own power source with only one
connection to the general grid.
“Generation, storage, and
distribution of electricity by the
community. That is the longterm
vision for us.”
From Diamond Harbour
himself, Kulpe said establishing
more renewable energy for
Lyttelton buildings would be
positive for whole harbour area.
“There’s many places and
activities in Lyttelton that people
always migrate to.”
The society is appealing for
more members, especially those
with connections to fundraising
or renewable energy.
“We’re still in the set-up
phase, hopefully we’ll get more
members once we have public
meetings and start putting
ourselves out there more in the
community.”
One of the society’s first
public engagements was at the
Te Pātaka o Rākaihautū Banks
Peninsula Community Board
meeting on March 11.
The society has been cofounded
by Wendy Everingham,
information centre manager,
Patricia Scott, environmental
activist, electrician Sam Tweedie
and Greg Preston, manager
at the Building Innovation
Burn After Writing
- TIK TOK MADE ME BUY IT!
by Sharon Jones
THE MILLION-COPY TIKTOK PHENOMENONTHE BESTSELLING BOOK Write. Burn. Repeat. Now
featuring a brand new pink cover. Instagram, WhatsApp, Snapchat, TikTok, VSCO, YouTube...the
world has not only become one giant feed, but also one giant confessional. Burn After Writing
allows you to spend less time scrolling and more time self-reflecting. Through incisive questions
and thought experiments, this journal helps you learn new things while letting others go.
Imagine instead of publicly declaring your feelings for others, you privately declared your feelings
for yourself? Help your heart by turning off the comments and muting the accounts that drive you
into jealousy for a few moments a night. Whether you are going through the ups and downs of
growing up, or know a few young people who are, you will flourish by finding free expression -
even if through a few tears! Push your limits, reflect on your past, present, and future, and create
a secret book that’s about you, and just for you. This is not a diary, and there is no posting
required. And when you’re finished, toss it, hide it, or Burn After Writing.
Enzo Ferrari
The definitive biography of Enzo Ferrari
by Luca Dal Monte
Soon to be an AppleTV+ series, Enzo uncovers a wealth of new facts about the origins,
ambitions, and private life of Enzo Ferrari. Drawing on years of original research
conducted in Italy and abroad, this book lays bare the hidden aspects of Ferrari’s
career. From his earliest failed business ventures, to his political dealings with Italy’s
fascist government, Allied occupiers, and even Communist leaders. Revisit all the
highlights of Ferrari’s rise to greatness. Including his driving career in the 1920s, his
management of racing teams for Alfa Romeo in the 1930s and the launch of his own
company and team in the late 1940s. A must have for Ferrari and Formula 1 fans, this
definitive biography makes previous accounts obsolete.
The Doctor of Hiroshima
His heart-breaking and inspiring true life story
by Dr. Michihiko Hachiya
With what this poor woman had been through the sight of her crying tore at my
heartstrings. What if something should happen to her; who would care for her little
baby? To conceal the fear and terror in my heart I left her, trying to put up a cheerful
front. But no one could conceal from her the ominous import of the dark spots that had
appeared on her chest. The Doctor of Hiroshima is the extraordinary true story of Dr
Michihiko Hachiya, whose hospital was less than a mile from the centre of the atomic
bomb that hit on that warm August day. In immense shock and pain, he and his wife
Yaeko dragged themselves to the devastated hospital building and what colleagues
they could find. In time, they begin to heal, and start to treat the impossible numbers of
patients - a small girl covered in burns, an elderly man with pneumonia, a young boy
and his little sister looking for their parents. They also began to investigate the strange
unexplainable symptoms afflicting his patients - things he never dreamed he would
see... Told simply and poignantly in Dr Hachiya’s own words, The Doctor of Hiroshima
is a unique and deeply moving human story of survival about a small, committed
band of hospital staff in the face of unthinkable destruction and loss.
Beyond Hope
From an Auckland prison to changing lives in Afghanistan
by Bariz Shah
At age 18, Bariz Shah found himself in an Auckland prison. He’d defined his life by the
way others treated him: as an Afghan migrant after 9/11 and as a boy who kept making
mistakes. Picking fights and robbing dairies, Bariz spiralled into crime and drugs - until
prison made him rethink the story of his life. Inside, Bariz met men who helped him set
his life on track. He rediscovered his faith, found purpose and learned how to silence
the devil on his shoulder. Years later, in Christchurch, Bariz had turned his life around
when a gunman walked into the local mosque and took 51 lives of people Bariz knew
and loved. Grieving and thrust into a position of leadership, Bariz reflected on hate, hope
and positive change. A memoir about the journey from boy to man, Bariz talks about his
search for belonging, purpose and self-belief. It’s a reminder we are made, not born, and
that we always have the power to change ourselves for the better.
A GOVERNORS Bay man has
cycled 1500km down the South
Island to raise money for a cause
close to his heart.
Terry White said his 10-
day trip was challenging, but
worthwhile to raise funds for
mental health charity I Am
Hope.
“I’m pretty proud of my efforts,
physically and mentally I was
well outside of my comfort zone.”
The 47-year-old father of two
decided to embark on the trip
after losing a friend to suicide in
2022.
“Like many, he had struggled
with mental health for a long
time and from the outside
seemed to mostly have things
under control.”
White said the long trip was
far beyond any cycling he had
done before.
“Most of my riding the last
few years has been once or twice
with friends for a few hours.
Definitely nothing like this.”
He spent the past six months
training for the trip, which
started in Ship Cove in Queen
Charlotte Sound and ended in
Milford Sound.
The biggest challenge White
faced on the trip was on day six,
when he got sick with 92km left
to ride to Tekapo.
“Knowing why I was riding
thoughts of pulling out and
White found it peaceful
travelling solo for the whole trip.
“Spending that long riding
gives you a lot of time to think
and talk through everything
that is in your head.”
White’s days varied in
distance, but he generally cycled
for 10-12 hours, then slept in his
tent or at a backpackers.
A highlight of the trip was the
vista of Nevis Valley in Otago.
“Peaceful and wide open
country with big sky and
stunning views, no headphones
to distract me that day.”
White wishes everyone
had access to the counselling
struggles sooner in life.
“If just one of those sessions
stops a family from feeling
have been all worthwhile,” he
Fire still a
concern
as bike park
reopens
THE THREAT of fire is becoming
an increasing concern for
Christchurch Adventure Park, its
manager says.
Fire tore through 650ha of forest
and scrub on the Port Hills last
month. The blaze spread to the
adventure park, which had to
be closed for the second time in
seven years due to wildfire.
Park manager
Anne Newman
(right) said last
month’s fire has
definitely left workers
with a sense of
déjà vu from the
2017 fires. The park
is set to reopen tomorrow following
the month-long closure. In
2017, it was closed for nearly a year
while repairs were carried out.
The fire has also left staff
with concerns about the future,
Newman said.
“Fire seems to be becoming a
more common occurrence and
it’s pretty worrying for us as a
business in terms of the ongoing
impacts. We’re doing obviously
everything we can around fire
breaks and making sure that we’ve
got all the measures in place that
we possibly can.”
Community
chats with
Civil Defence
• By Dylan Smits
AS PART of the next stage of
preparing for disasters, the
Lyttelton Emergency Hub
is hosting the community
conversations series with Civil
Defence.
Civil Defence community
resilience co-ordinator Rachel
Hunt will be the guest speaker
for four events, the first tomorrow
evening at 6.30pm.
The talks will highlight hazards
such as earthquakes and
the Alpine Fault, flooding and
adverse weather, and tsunamis.
Emergency hub facilitator Felicite
Jardine said the talks were
a good way to bring attention to
the hub’s mission of high-level
community preparedness
without the need for immediate
government assistance.
“It’ll be a good way of getting
our message out into the community.
I’d also like to hope that
we get a few more volunteers out
of it.
“Civil Defence have a great
relationship with Lyttelton
Emergency Hub and we will
continue to work together to
improve community resilience
in the area.”
The meetings will be at 40
Winchester St.
Riders eye milestone victory
in 25th edition of Le Race
THE CYCLING community will
be celebrating a special milestone
on Saturday when 600 riders
line up for the 25 th edition of the
Golden Homes Le Race.
Since its inception in 1999,
the 100km race from Cathedral
Square to Akaroa has featured
big names in the sport, as well
as some of the most eccentric
weekend warriors.
The tough climbs over Dyers
Pass, Gebbies Pass, Hilltop and
the Summit Rd over the years
have attracted some top fields,
and the Hall of Fame includes
a long list of world champions,
Olympic medallists and Commonwealth
Games winners like
Brian Fowler, Hayden Roulston
and Kate McIlroy.
Some of those competed in the
heyday of their careers, while
other young New Zealand talents
used Le Race as a stepping stone
to a professional career on the
cycling world tour.
“Those names are a great
reflection of the high regard Le
Race is held in cycling circles,”
said race organiser Sheree Stevens.
“It has been wonderful so
see those same young kids we
first met at the starting line in
the podium in Europe or the US,
and of course makes us incredibly
proud.”
This year’s field will include
defending champions Sharlotte
Lucas and Jonty Harris, as well
as previous two-time winner
Daniel Whitehouse and Australian-turned-Kiwi
pro rider
Matilda Raynolds.
Stevens said her event has
faced the same challenges as
other sports events in recent
years and Le Race was virtually
on life support after the double
cancellation in 2020 and 2022
due to the pandemic.
“Other events organisers may
have pulled the pin, but this is
such a special race and we just
love our cycling community too
much to let this amazing event
die a quiet death. Not on my
watch,” says Stevens, who adds
that increased competition from
other events, notably mountain-bike
competitions has also
challenged the viability of classic
road race.
The race also conflicts with
Sail GP in Lyttelton on this
weekend.
Stevens is grateful for the New
Zealand community for reciprocating
her commitment to Le
Race by again signing up in large
numbers for the gruelling climbs
over the Port Hills.
“That’s what keeps us all
coming back, their love for this
special event. And the big smiles
on everyone’s faces when they
share their battle stories over a
beer in Akaroa.”
Knitting for the good of her community
• By Dylan Smits
MARIE RHODES has spent
countless evenings knitting
since she was child. During
her retirement, she and fellow
knitters have sold goods with
all proceeds supporting quality
healthcare for Akaroa.
The 74-year-old started selling
knitted wares at street markets in
SALE
2017 as part of a broader mission
of fundraising for the Akaroa
Health Centre.
“I feel passionately about
Akaroa and Banks Peninsula,
and we need to have a really
good health system. I mean, I’m
getting closer to needing the
old people’s home myself,” said
Marie.
She is part of the Guardians of
Akaroa Health which was was
formed in 1991 by volunteers
committed to improving services
at the Akaroa Hospital.
After the building was
demolished due to earthquake
damage, the guardians started
supporting the replacement
health centre which opened in
2019.
Marie’s sales have raised more
than $70,000 for the centre since
2017.
The funds have been used for
art classes, to buy a wheelchair
van, televisions, bed tables and
low-rise beds, all with the goal
of improving quality of life for
the centre’s long-term elderly
residents.
Marie believes supporting the
retirement and health facilities
at the centre is a key way to keep
families and young people in
Akaroa.
“It’s important to keep the
community alive, so we can keep
our young people here. We need
young people to give the town its
vitality.”
Since early last year, Marie has
sold the knitted goods from a
small shop opposite Pot Pourri
on Rue Lavaud.
A team of about 20 volunteers
helps her run the shop and knit
the goods.
“Some people send in their
knitting. They’re from many
places in New Zealand. They’ve
had good experiences with the
health centre or their family has,
so they see it as a good cause.”
Marie said she could not
operate the knitting shop
without the efforts of others.
“We’ve got quite a few elderly
people who don’t get out much,
have got limited mobility, but
they can still knit and crochet.”
Her favourite items to craft are
blankets and children’s clothes.
Jobs for Nature’s
impact tangible
as funding ends
Over the next few
months, Jobs for Nature
projects across the
country will hang up
their spades and put
away their gumboots
for the last time. Lily
Duval from Kaimahi for
Nature Whakaraupō
spoke to conservation
teams across Lyttelton
Harbour about their
mixed emotions as the
end of the programme
draws closer
LAUNCHED IN 2020 by the
Labour government, Jobs for
Nature’s primary purpose was to
help those impacted by Covid-19
find jobs in conservation.
By September 2023, the
scheme had employed 13,350
people and invested more than
$1.2 billion in green employment.
The funds helped groups up
and down the country achieve
environmental goals, from tackling
the march of wilding pines
to supporting threatened species
or restoring vast swathes of land
to indigenous plant cover.
Evidence of the funding is
everywhere in Lyttelton Harbour
– tens of thousands of trees have
been planted on the hills, thousands
of introduced predators
have been trapped, and invasive
weeds have been uprooted.
The plantings will help stop
sediment flowing off the hills
into the harbour, improving the
quality of both freshwater and
marine habitats, and it will also
mitigate fire risk.
Harbour conservation teams
hope new forests will attract
native species like tūī and the
orange-fronted parakeet.
Predator control efforts have
given native birds, lizards and
bugs a reprieve and support wider
efforts to create a predator free
Banks Peninsula.
Weed control work has given
native plants a chance to take
root and recloak the hills.
Kaimahi for Nature Whakaraupō
is one of the largest Jobs
for Nature projects in the South
Island.
It is a partnership between
Ngāti Wheke, Living Springs and
Conservation Volunteers New
Zealand.
Two field teams are operated
from Living Springs and Rāpaki.
The project has planted more
than 70,000 native trees and
trapped thousands of rats,
possums and stoats over the past
three years.
Orton Bradley Park and the
city council also received funding
and were able to upscale their
conservation work.
Kaimahi for Nature
Whakaraupō includes Te
Hapū o Ngāti Wheke, Living
Springs, Conservation
Volunteers New Zealand:
$4,500,000
· Planted 70,000+ native
trees, shrubs and grasses.
· Employed 30 people
over three years.
· Controlled 1090ha for
predators. Trapped 1404
possums, 1605 rats and 205
mustelids.
· Built 9km of fencing.
For all these groups, the
financial boost allowed them to
achieve environmental goals that
were otherwise out of reach.
“The Jobs for Nature scheme
was a fantastic initiative, in my
opinion,” said Living Springs
field team leader Grant Whitehead.
“It really helped drive a lot of
these projects forward. It gave
employment to a lot of people.”
Living Springs field officer
Daniel Ho said the impact of
their work is already easy to see.
“When you take a walk in the
forest compared to two years
ago, you can tell the difference.
And you have local landowners
around here that also comment
on the difference. They’ve
stopped hearing the hideous
screeching of possums, and the
bird life is much better. It’s a
quality-of-life improvement for
everyone around here.”
Kaimahi for Nature Whakaraupō
was unable to find
funding to keep the field teams
active.
March 31 will be their final day
in the field.
The teams are sad to see the
project end, and many are concerned
about the future.
Whitehead worries much of
their hard work could be undone
in the coming years.
“I struggle with the fact that
this billion-dollar Jobs for
Nature programme is just going
to be finishing up with no real
funding put aside for further
work, especially when we have
such big challenges with the
environment,” he said.
“Reinvasions of predators and
pest plants like wilding pines
are major issues for us. They’re
like cancer on your land. How
to remove them without control,
I’m uncertain.”
Despite concerns over the
future, the teams have no doubt
Jobs for Nature will leave behind
a positive legacy.
They hope community volunteer
groups set up by Kaimahi
for Nature Whakaraupō can
look after some of the plant sites
and the trapping lines.
These include the Living
TREASURES FROM THE PAST
First female MP broke through barriers
• By Liz Grant
ELIZABETH McCOMBS won
the seat of Lyttelton in 1933,
becoming the first woman in New
Zealand to be elected a Member
of Parliament. It was a convincing
win, with a majority of 2669 votes
over the two men who had been
her rivals.
This was a by-election brought
about by the death of her husband,
James McCombs, the Labour
MP for Lyttelton. Elizabeth had
stood unsuccessfully in other
Christchurch seats in the elections
of 1928 and 1931. This time, her
candidacy was well supported
locally.
Labour Party leader Harry
Holland was a strong supporter,
and Elizabeth was introduced as
the candidate at the Excelsior Hall
in Ōhinehou Lyttelton on August
21. She formally opened her
campaign at the Oddfellows Hall
on August 25 and went on to that
resounding victory.
On the evening of her success,
a crowd of about 2000 gathered,
in dreadful weather, below the
balcony of Warner’s Hotel in
Cathedral Square to hear her
speak.
New Zealand proudly claims
to be the first country in the
world to grant women the right
to vote (in 1893), but the right of
women to stand for Parliament
did not come with the right to
vote. It would take another 26
years and the passing of the
Women’s Parliamentary Rights
Act 1919 before women could put
themselves forward as candidates.
It was 14 years later when
Elizabeth McCombs took her
seat in the house. There was still
resistance to the very idea with a
letter to the editor published in
the Christchurch Press capturing
the prevailing attitude: “I hope
TRAILBLAZER: Elizabeth Reid McCombs, née Henderson circa 1919-1925. Right, Elizabeth McCombs at Lyttelton harbour
Mrs McCombs will have the
distinction of being the last and
only woman in Parliament.” The
writer’s disdain for McCombs and
her “sentimental absent minded”
supporters was palpable, labelling
them “masculine women and
feminine men”.
Elizabeth McCombs was no
newbie and would have taken
little notice of those opinions.
Her husband had been an MP for
nine years and she had spent a
lot of time in Parliament’s public
gallery. She was familiar with the
way Parliament worked and was
in no way intimidated by it.
The welfare of women and girls,
workers and the unemployed, was
her key focus.
Born Elizabeth Reid
Henderson, she was the eighth
of nine children. Like her three
older sisters, she was involved
with the socialist Progressive
Liberal Association in Ōtautahi
Christchurch. One of the
association’s goals was to increase
the political rights of women.
It was through the association
Elizabeth met James McCombs, a
committed socialist. They married
in 1903. Elizabeth was also a
prominent figure in the Women’s
Christian Temperance Union and
the National Council of Women.
James had become an MP in
1913, having stood for the Social
Democratic Party. In 1916, he
was elected the first president of
the second New Zealand Labour
Party, and Elizabeth was elected
onto the party executive. In 1921,
she was the second woman to be
FOREHAND:
Elizabeth
McCombs
at opening
season,
Woolston, circa
1933.
elected to the Christchurch City
Council.
It was thanks to her efforts a
crèche and women’s restroom
was built in Cathedral Square.
She became chair of the council
electricity committee and was on
the hospital and tramway boards.
In 1926, she was one of the
first women in New Zealand to
be made a Justice of the Peace.
It was a strong track record that
underpinned her parliamentary
success.
When she was elected to
Parliament, Labour was in
opposition and there was limited
opportunity for Elizabeth to push
through the causes to which she
was dedicated, but she worked
extremely hard in the house and
in her electorate.
Increasingly, this took a toll on
her health, which had never been
robust due to asthma. Only two
years after she had taken her seat,
she died in hospital in Wellington
on June 7, 1935, aged just 61.
Elizabeth had earned a great
deal of respect during her time in
Parliament and flags were flown
at half-mast across the country.
Later in Christchurch, thousands
lined the route for the funeral
procession to Waimairi Cemetery.
Michael Joseph Savage, then
leader of the Labour Party,
eulogised that “her passing has
created a gap in the ranks of
the Labour Party that will be
hard to fill”, noting as the first
female elected to New Zealand’s
Parliament she effectively
disproved the belief women are
inferior to men in governance
through her “outstanding
abilities”.
Elizabeth McCombs’ portrait
is on the wall in the Women’s
Suffrage Room in the New
Zealand Parliament. She and her
husband are commemorated by
the McCombs Memorial Garden
in Woolston Park.
they are bombarded with choice.
Other markets including Europe
and the UK haven’t fallen out of
love with wagons to the same
extent as us.
For almost a year, the trimmed
down Corolla line-up sold
here, including the wagon,
are all powered by Toyota’s
popular hybrid petrol-electric
powertrain. The ‘go all hybrid’
is being driven on two fronts.
One is buyer demand, with the
other, Toyota’s push to reduce
the carbon footprint of their new
vehicle sales in New Zealand.
From an affordability
perspective, with so many
Toyota models available with
hybrid-electric technology,
they have inevitably morphed
into a mainstream customer
choice. These days, the cost of
buying one of the company’s new
hybrid-electrics compared to a
petrol-only model has become
negligible.
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
The champion Corolla has
a well-proven track record for
reliability spanning the decades.
This latest model debuted
here in 2021 offering superior
refinement, performance, build
quality, and ride and handling,
compared to its predecessor that
didn’t have an abundance of
any of these attributes. Hardly
surprising though. It was a
Japanese domestic market model
and we were one of the few
places outside of Japan where it
was sold, primarily to plug the
wagon gap in the Toyota NZ
Corolla range.
There’s a likeable sophistication
about its styling, with the lower
grille showcasing its extra width
and LED headlights that wrap
around and delicately blend
into the front guards. Only one
model, the $36,995 Japanese
built entry entry-level GX being
road tested here, is available on
our market.
Up until the end of last year,
this latest Corolla wagon missed
out on the punchy 125kw
2.0-litre petrol motor used in its
hatchback and sedan siblings.
Instead, it had to get by with
an aging 1.8-litre petrol motor
renowned for its longevity and
good fuel economy but not a lot
else. There is another string to its
bow and that’s versatility.
For almost decade it was the
petrol component in a raft of
Toyota models with its acclaimed
petrol/electric hybrid system.
Recently it received a useful
and long overdue power bump
from 90kW to 103kW. It’s now
smoother and more refined than
the hybrid system it replaces, but
a fair chunk of this goes out the
door under full throttle.
The new found heft is most
noticeable in town driving where
the test wagon coasted for longer
periods on flat terrain in EV
mode only at speeds of up to
50km/h. Its star doesn’t shine so
brightly on the open road where
acceleration for overtaking
slower traffic is on the leisurely
side.
Engaging the transmission’s
‘Sport’ mode puts a bit more
spring in its performance step in
these situations, but only does,
if you will excuse the pun, a
passable job. I could only wonder
how good this wagon would
be with the excellent 135kW
2.0-litre petrol-electric hybrid
system used in the Corolla Cross
SUV. People in the UK know as
it’s used in the high-spec Corolla
Touring wagon sold in that part
of the world.
The 1.8-litre hybrid system
used in the GX that’s the subject
of this review features in the
more modestly equipped Corolla
wagons that Toyota serves up to
the Brits.
The 2.0-litre hybrid offers
a much larger dollop of
performance, enabling it to
charge through the 0–100km/h
dash in 7.5 seconds. That’s about
Ratings out of 10: Performance 6; Handling 7; Build Quality
7; Comfort 6; Passenger and Load Space 6; Value for
money: 7; Safety – ANCAP not rated.
Overall points out of 10: 7
three seconds quicker than the
1.8-litre hybrid. A Continuously
Variable Transmission (CVT)
automatic provides a consistently
seamless and pleasant ,but far
from gear shifting, regime.
This is the largest Corolla
wagon so far, although a roofline
that slopes away steeply toward
the rear of the vehicle does
compromise load height.
Like the Corolla hatch, rear
seat space is tight especially
head and legroom. Overall it
isn’t a commodious load hauler
of people or cargo. A refreshed
cabin features pleasant yet hard
wearing fabric seats, smart key
entry with push button start.
This wagon earned bragging
rights by being the first Toyota
sold here with Apple CarPlay
and Android Auto all accessed
via a new 7-inch touchscreen.
Making it on to the list of
standard equipment is a smallish
4.2-inch touchscreen display,
air-conditioning, heated exterior
mirrors and modest four-speaker
audio system.
It get a ‘high five’ from me for
its push button engine start and
headlights that automatically dip
at night for on-coming traffic.
Toyota’s excellent Safety Sense
technology package is standard
with impressive pedestrian and
cyclist detection capabilities.
Other noteworthy inclusions are
autonomous emergency braking,
all speed dynamic radar cruise
control, plus a bunch of other
safety tech you wouldn’t expect
to find in small wagon in this
price bracket.
Like its hatch sibling,
this model is also built on
Toyota’s excellent New Global
Architecture (TNGA) platform.
It creates a lower centre of
gravity, and greater body
rigidity to provide more assured
handling and stability.
Handling is a vast
improvement on the Corolla
wagons that have followed in
the tracks of this one. Generally,
the suspension reacts quickly to
sudden and unexpected changes
in direction by either the driver,
or instigated without warning by
sub-standard road surfaces.
Less engaging steering than
the Corolla hatch reflects the fact
that the wagon is tuned for the
Japanese market. There, drivers
prefer steering with a softer more
comfortable feel, rather than set
ups with sporty aspirations and
intent.
While both the handling and
steering of the wagon lack the
crispness of the hatch, it works fine
in a vehicle focused on practicality
and versatility, not being a crowd
pleaser on the sporty drive front.
HIGHLIGHTS OF LYTTELTON

26 Bay Harbour News Wednesday March 20 2024
Sail into the wonderful SeaSide
town of LytteLton
Unique, quirky, and seriously charming – Lyttelton is a hidden gem that you can happily explore in the morning, afternoon, or
whole day. Home to SailGP for 2024, it’s the perfect place to soak up the atmosphere before, during and after the racing.
Start with Brunch
And coffee
The dining scene in Lyttelton is supreme, and that
starts with breakfast or brunch.
For coffee lovers, a morning spent at Spooky Boogie is
always a great idea. The coffee experts will ensure you are
properly caffeinated, and you can even top up on some
freshly roasted coffee beans while you’re there. Sip and
browse as you explore the quirky shop filled with art, gifts
and records.
For a hearty breaky that focuses on plantbased
food, head straight for The Shroom
Room. Serving up vegetarian and vegan
delights, the restaurant offers a tasty sit-in
menu as well as delicious cabinet food to
grab for on the go.
For the iconic Lyttelton breakfast
experience, check out Lyttelton
Coffee Culture. The cafe stands
strong and is as popular as ever,
with one-of-a-kind service, strong
brews, wholesome food and
sustainability at the fore.
Since you are in Lyttelton, an iconic
bite to try is Hope River Pies.
Trust us when we say these
pies are seriously good. Craig
Minehan has been making pies
for Christchurch for over 18
years, so you can guarantee
he has mastered the art of
a perfect pie. Perfect for a quick bite on the go, opt
for one of the classic flavours or something more
adventurous. Vegetarian options are also available.
And, of course, it wouldn’t be a Lyttelton breakfast
highlight without a mention
of The Farmers’ Market.
Taking place every Saturday
from 10am-1pm, the market is
home to a collection of local
vendors who not only sell
fresh produce, eggs, meat
and bread but also the most
delicious options for a flavourpacked
first meal of the day.
MaritiMe History
Lyttelton has a fascinating history, and there are
a few ways to learn and experience the stories of
Lyttelton’s past while visiting the town.
A rare piece of maritime history, Lyttelton’s
Timeball is a reminder of the town’s important
maritime location. The Timeball Station is open
to the public and boasts spectacular views over
Lyttelton Harbour. Timeball stations were important
visual signals in many of the world’s ports, enabling
correct ships’ chronometers and accurate
navigation. However, many were discontinued after
dinner that will satisfy your taste buds. You’ll find
great options for vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free
requirements, too.
For Japanese Māori inspired deliciousness, be sure
to check out SUPER. With a focus on fresh, local
and organic ingredients, their dishes take flavourful
cuisine to new heights.
The menu is full of
mouth-watering options
hotcakes with teriyakiglazed
Akaroa salmon,
or one of their steamed
Bao burgers.
still working.
Add a visit to the Torpedo Boat Museum in the Old
Powder Magazine Building to your afternoon and
see a piece of history with the partly restored 1885
Lyttelton torpedo boat and an example of a steam
engine that once powered it. Check out the scale
pizzas you can’t get anywhere else. How do they do
it? A beautiful woodfired oven, ideal for crisp toppings
and hand-stretched dough. Named after trees in te
reo Māori, Arbour’s pizzas showcase a Kiwi twist on
the Italian classic.
