Following the announcement at the
end of last year that the Charvilbased
My Cancer My Choices (see
our January 2024 issue) had won
The King's Award for Voluntary
Service, 10 of the charity’s current
longest-serving volunteers were
invited to a ceremony at Windsor
Guildhall where the Crystal Award
and Certificate were presented by
Andrew Try, the Lord Lieutenant for
the Royal County of Berkshire, on
behalf of His Majesty the King.

Charvil's cancer support volunteers receive their King's
Service Award
The King’s Award for Voluntary Service
is the highest award a local voluntary
group can receive in the UK. It is
equivalent to an MBE.
The volunteers represent the wide
range of support provided to the
charity, including complementary
therapists, meeter-greeters, trustees,
marketing, fundraising and admin
volunteers.
In the citation, given by Lindsey
Beard JP DL, Deputy Lieutenant of
the Royal County of Berkshire, she
said, 'It is difficult to capture the power
and importance of this charity… Unique
in Berkshire, it is clearly one of the most
important and effective charities one is
ever likely to meet.'
The original announcement was
made on the King’s birthday, following
a very rigorous nomination and
assessment process.
My Cancer My Choices (MCMC)
provides complementary therapies
and support to people living with, and
beyond, cancer across Berkshire. Its
mission is to empower people with
cancer, enabling them to make active
choices to enhance their well-being, as
they come to terms with their diagnosis.
Specialist therapists volunteer their
time to offer a range of one-to-one
therapies (acupuncture, scar tissue,
aromatherapy and oncology massage,
art therapy, reiki and reflexology) and
group therapies (mindfulness and yoga),
which help manage the side effects of
conventional treatment and improve
mental and physical health. The charity
has about 65 volunteers at four locations
across Berkshire and is funded purely
through donations and grants.
