HAVING A baby can be scary
– especially if you’re on your
That’s why Mickenzi Askin
started making baby bundle
packs to donate to mums in
need of some help.
The packs contain
blankets, lotions,
lip balms, toys,
creams, clothing,
bottles and
more.
“Each pack
is different but
all are designed
one-year-olds. The only thing
we ask is what the
gender is as we
don’t get enough
gender neutral
items.
“They’re
based on who
Speed drop
as a result of
Streets for
People trial
• By Sasha Watson
PEOPLE ARE driving slower on
Hampshire St than they used to,
since the installation of speed
bumps and bollards.
Data from the Streets For People
Aranui trial have shown an average
speed drop of 13km/h along the
street, a meeting has heard.
The meeting last week was to
hear community feedback to the
trial. It was attended by residents,
students, city councillors, city
council staff and the Aranui
Community Trust.
The 50km/h speed limit on
Hampshire St has not changed.
Burwood Ward city councillor
Kelly Barber told Pegasus Post
the average speed of 85 per
cent of drivers travelling down
Hampshire St was 52.9km/h,
pretrial.
“The average speed has dropped
to 40km/h now. The average of all
travelling vehicles was 46.3km/h
pretrial and is now 33.7 km/h.
This means the project is working,”
he said.
The meeting also heard feedback
against the bollards outside
Wainoni Park, which had been
removed prior to the meeting.
Eastern Eagles Rugby League
Club secretary Fina F’amoe had
been worried about the loss of
about 20 parking spaces in front
of the park, after median-flex
posts were installed in February.
“The bollards were removed
last week which is awesome. I’m
so pleased; it is commonsense as
they shouldn’t have gone up in the
first place,” said F’amoe.
Battle to priortise ‘lifeline’ bridge
• By Sasha Watson
REPLACING the earthquakedamaged
Pages Rd bridge could
become the No 1 priority in the
draft Regional Land Transport
Plan.
Councillors Celeste Donovan
and Aaron Keown presented the
city council’s submission to the
Canterbury Regional Transport
Committee on Monday urging
it to move the New Brighton
bridge upgrade from No 12 to
No 1 on its list of priorities.
Keown said evidence shows
there is a 26 per cent risk
of a magnitude 8 or higher
earthquake off the coast in
the next 50 years, which could
trigger a tsunami.
Donovan said the project
cannot be delayed any further
due to the need to improve
traffic flow during evacuations
and other emergency scenarios.
“I believe we can’t afford any
delays to this project, as this
bridge serves as a lifeline route
into and out of New Brighton
and the structure carries critical
communication and electricity
cables, as well as water/wastewater
services across the river,”
Donovan said.
“The Pages Rd bridge was initially
ranked as the No 1 project
in our region, but it got moved
down.
“This makes it challenging to
secure government funding, as
this funding typically goes first
MAIN EXIT: An artist’s impression of the new Pages Rd
bridge. Below – City councillor Celeste Donovan says the
current bridge needs to be replaced as soon as possible.
to the projects that are ranked
highest across the region,”
Donovan said.
The bridge was damaged in
the February 22, 2011, earthquake,
while Pages Rd dropped
in places, affecting drainage.
The ‘Gateway to New
Brighton’ project, which includes
the replacement of the bridge,
as well as various changes to
surrounding streets and intersections
is estimated to cost $65
million.
“Despite major redevelopment
work and regeneration across
the city, some key earthquake
legacy projects, such as Pages
Rd, are still yet to be completed,”
Donovan said.
Due to its deprioritisation
and the city council having no
confirmation of Waka Kotahi
NZ Transport Agency funding,
a hearings panel for the Pages
Rd bridge project was going to
be deferred for up to six months
until July. It will now be held on
April 4. Donovan learned of the
delay at a consultation meeting
with the Regional Transport
Committee on February 21 and
asked it reschedule the hearings
as soon as possible.
The committee includes
representatives from the
region’s councils as well as Waka
Kotahi.
The primary role of the
committee is to develop and
implement the Canterbury
Regional Land Transport Plan.
“It means the hearings
panel can begin the process of
hearing from the community
to get feedback on the proposed
design, understanding any
concerns, and changes that need
to be implemented as part of the
final design,” Donovan said.
The new bridge will be more
resilient to future earthquakes
and the effects of climate
change. It will also be designed
to improve access for everyone.
Work to
upgrade
playgrounds
under way
• By Sasha Watson
THREE playgrounds in Burwood
and Shirley are getting major
upgrades at a cost of $368,846
over the next two months.
Work started on the Robin St
playground in Burwood last week.
Once it is completed, the Sabina
St playground in Shirley will be
upgraded and then work will
start on the Chartwell Reserve
playground in Burwood.
Each playground will get
modern climbing, sliding and
sensory activities and take about
20 days to complete. The projects
have been funded through the city
council’s Long Term Plan.
The Chartwell Reserve
playground will get a new double
wave slide, climbing carousel,
playful edging and picnic table.
Waitākiri Primary School
pupils helped with the design and
planning of the new playground
on Chartwell St.
The work is expected to be
completed on May 9, weather
permitting.
The playground upgrades were
due to start in the middle of last
year but city council community
parks manager Al Hardy said
there was a delay during preconstruction
due to personnel
changes.
‘I basically
raised my
Community feedback
children alone’ • From page 1
•From page 1
Said Askin: “With Madeline,
who is five-an-a-half, my second
pregnancy, I had a partner
who wasn’t physically there so
I basically raised my children
alone.
“I also wasn’t producing any
milk so a stranger donated
theirs to the hospital.
“They’ll never know how
much I needed that and I can’t
ever thank them. So I wanted to
give back because I know how
much it’s needed.”
Askin knows situations
change all the time, having
made a “quick move” from
Geraldine to the city about five
years ago. She says that is often
when new mums need help.
“I moved without having
much of anything but my
children into my nana’s house.
“I ran to St Vinnies in Hornby
and said to the ladies there: ‘I
really need some help’.
“They were about five minutes
from closing the shop but I
explained my situation and they
stayed to help me with sheets,
clothing and much more.
“Just what I needed, so it gives
me joy someone else might get a
smile and a bit of support out of
this too.”
Askin sent her first six packs
out last week and said the
mums were very grateful to
receive them.
“It went very well. We’ll keep
doing bundles as long as we
keep getting donations.
“I didn’t think it would take
off but after asking my small
following on Instagram, we’re
receiving donations from all
over New Zealand.”
When she’s not making packs
or working on her business,
Sustainable Mama, which
focuses on creating sustainable
and natural products like
wooden baby rattles and healthy
skin creams and lotions, Askin
volunteers at the St Vincent de
Paul shop in Hornby.
“I started volunteering about
four weeks ago. It’s a nice wee
cycle, going back to help the
beautiful women there.”
•To donate or for more
information about
the packs, contact
Mickenzi Askin on her
Facebook page https://
www.facebook.com/
sustainablemama.nz
F’amoe said streets in the area
were already narrow and the
bollards around Hampshire St
were causing congestion.
“If they were installed in the
gutters alongside the footpaths, it
would give traffic more space on
the road.”
Barber said
some aspects of
the trial will stay
the same, such
as speed bumps.
“The project
may have gotten
Kelly
Barber
off on the wrong
foot, but this is a
really good way
forward with
community engagement and the
council is listening to residents.”
As part of the project, Barber
said city council staff also tested
changes to several street corners.
On Monday, he went out doorknocking
with staff.
“We heard from residents about
the ‘forest’ of bollards outside
Hampshire St shops not being
visually appealing. The city council
is looking to remove them and
install an island or the like.
“Changes to Shortland St will
be made to allow trucks to move
easier. There is plenty of scope to
find local solutions.”
Barber said about $700,000
of the allocated $2.6 million
has been spent on the project so
far. It is 90 per cent funded by
New Zealand Transport Agency
Waka Kotahi.
TRIAL: The
bollards, installed
out front of
Wainoni Park,
Term 1 - From the Tumuaki
Avonside Girls’ High School
Te Kura Kohine o Ōtākaro
Educating and empowering young women
to achieve now and in the future.
Ko Hine-Titama koe nānā i puta ki te whai ao ki te ao mārama
Avonside Girls’ High School Te Kura Kohine
o Ōtākaro – A community where ākonga are
empowered and nurtured to thrive.
Our vision statement above comes from
consultation with our students and community.
The first goal to achieve this for us is
establishing a wairua in which all students
belong in their identity. That was certainly
encapsulated in the start of the school year.
2024 at Avonside Girls’ High School Te Kura
Kohine o
Ōtākaro has
started with a
strong sense of
school wairua
and energy. This
has been led
by our amazing
staff and Year
13 students
from day 1.
The year began with our Year 13 leaders out
on a three-day camp experience to bond
and develop their leadership skills and goals.
It was an incredible experience for these
students who demonstrated courage (kia maia),
manaakitanga, determination (kia manawanui)
and leadership. They came back to school
with strong energy and welcomed the new
Year 9s into the school. This term the Year 13
peer support leaders continue to work with
There were some
incredibly creative
costumes that
encompassed
our school mauri.
Following on from
that we held our
house tabloid
sports. Everyone
dressed up in
house colours and
had heaps of fun.
This term we have
also held our
swimming sports
and athletics’ day.
These were great
days and enjoyed
by all – lots of
participation
and competition.
Summer sport
has also got off
to a great start
with students competing in touch, tennis, indoor
netball, volleyball, cricket, softball, ki o rahi
and rowing. Winter sport trials are currently
on and we are excited to have more sign ups,
teams and groups participating in sport. Our
Music department is also thriving with bigger
numbers in orchestra, choir and bands. Kapa
Haka is now 40 strong and our polyfest Pasifika
group consists of 78 students – they perform at
Canterbury Polyfest in Hagley Park. Both groups
sound amazing, and we are very proud of this
development in the arts and cultural groups in
our school.
At the heart of what we do we want our
students to succeed academically, and we would
like to congratulate all our 2023 students on
their NCEA results. We celebrate this in our
academic assembly. With over 70% pass rate at
Level 1 and Level 3 and 75% pass rate at Level
2 our students are achieving well. We would
like to congratulate our staff and students
on the growth in endorsements and we were
excited to hear about our students who gained
scholarships. 7 scholarships were gained
by 5 students with Zoe Langley gaining an
Outstanding Scholarship in Technology.
our Year 9s to
support them
at the start of
their secondary
school
experience.
Our staff led a
mihi whakatau
to welcome new staff and we were proud of
Quentin Smitheran, a teacher, who led the
whaikorero.
Year 9 students had 3 days at Avonside to get
to know the school and settle in. We had lots
of fun including the traditional newspaper
dress competition in which students had to
create outfits from newspapers that reflected
their house, women leaders and school values.
Light, tasty salad that’s easy to make
NERYS WHELAN is a Kiwi
chef with a passion for good food
and while she concentrates on
keto recipes, some like this Thai
beef salad work for everyone. It
is a great light, tasty option that
is easily whipped up with a few
pantry basics and cooked on the
barbecue. It also makes the more
expensive cut of meat go further.
Thai beef salad
Makes 4
GF/SF/DF/EF
For the zesty Thai dressing:
1 Tbsp fresh ginger, finely grated
½-1 chilli, seeds discarded, finely
chopped
1 clove garlic, crushed
1 Tbsp fish sauce
1 lime, zest and juice
1 tsp rice wine vinegar or apple
cider vinegar
30g Allulose (or another easy
dissolving sweetener)
1 tsp Dijon mustard
2 Tbsp sesame oil
2 Tbsp fresh coriander, finely
sliced
½ tsp salt
For the salad:
400g scotch fillet steak, left
covered at room temperature for
30 minutes prior
3 Tbsp olive oil
1 tsp salt
1 tsp cracked black pepper
120g mesclun
50g mung beans or bean sprouts
8 cherry tomatoes, quartered
¼ small red onion, finely sliced
¼ cucumber, diced
2 Tbsp fresh coriander, roughly
chopped
1 Tbsp fresh mint, roughly
chopped
30g peanuts, chopped
Method:
• First, make the dressing by
putting everything in a jar and
shaking to combine or whisk
together in a bowl. You can make
a larger batch of this and leave it
in the fridge for a ready-made,
light and fresh salad dressing, just
omit the coriander so it doesn’t
discolour.
• Heat a heavy-based frying pan
over a high heat.
• Rub the steak with the oil,
salt and pepper. Once the pan is
very hot, add steak and cook to
your liking. Once steak is cooked,
remove from pan and let it rest
while you prepare the rest of the
salad.
• On a large serving platter,
scatter the mesclun on the bottom,
then arrange the mung beans,
cherry tomatoes, red onion,
cucumber and herbs over the top.
• Once the steak has rested for at
least 5 minutes, slice it and pat dry
any juices with a paper towel.
• Lay the steak on top of the
salad, sprinkle over the eanuts,
season lightly with salt and pepper,
then drizzle over about half of the
dressing and serve.
Nutrition note: Apple cider
vinegar is believed to help
moderate blood sugar levels, as
well as lower cholesterol.
Outlander may not excite, won’t disappoint
MITSUBISHI’S mid-size
Outlander is on track to
eclipse, yes that’s the name of
its smaller sibling, and become
the company’s biggest selling
passenger vehicle in New Zealand.
It was second behind the
market-leading Toyota RAV4
on our best selling SUV charts
for 2023. Launched here at the
end of 2021 it arrived here as the
first model off the production
line from the Mitsubishi, Nissan,
Renault Alliance.
Its success provided a dream
start for this partnership.
While the styling doesn’t send
the heart racing, it won’t spark
a bout of yawning. A clean and
uncluttered contemporary lines
are a little to generic to stand out
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
from the automotive crowd, being
more of a blend in type. A facelift
is due in the next 12 months to
provide a welcome visual refresh.
New underpinnings improve
safety, body strength and
steering stability, while multilink
suspension and dual pinion
electric power steering raises the
ride quality and comfort bar.
The Outlander’s 10-year
150,000km new vehicle warranty
is one of the better ones in New
Zealand, although some rivals are
starting to catch-up.
The six model range is evenly
split between two and four-wheel
drive models in three trim levels
LS, XLS and high spec VRX.
Prices start at $41,990 for the
2WD LS and top out at $75,990
Ratings out of 10: Performance 7; Handling 7; Build Quality
8; Comfort 7; Passenger and Load Space 7; Styling 7; Value
for money 7; Safety – Five Star ANCAP crash rating.
Overall points out of 10: 7.5
Incorporating
best motorbuys
www.drivesouth.co.nz
for the flagship PHEV (Plug-in
hybrid electric).
Engine choice is limited to a
135kW 2.5L motor or 185kW
PHEV. Having to haul, depending
on the model, an SUV weighing
anywhere between 1575kg
make is a big ask for this modest
performing motor, but livelier
with the PHEV power train. It’s
mostly under load when driving
over hilly terrain when the
engine’s energy levels begin to flag
and progress slows.
A 245Nm war chest of torque at
3600rpm doesn’t really get the job
done that convincingly. Pleasantly
smooth and responsive on flatter
going, there is enough thrust to
safely waft past slower moving
traffic.
A well resolved eight-speed
sport mode constant variable
transmission is one of Mitsubishi’s
best. Step shift control changes
do a fine job of mimicking a
conventional automatic, with
few slurring gear shifts that were
once an undesirable trait of these
transmissions.
A generously proportioned
passenger compartment earns
top marks for spaciousness,
practicality and being a relaxing
long distance cruiser. Upping the
comfort ante on the test vehicle
were heated seats, three-zone
automatic climate control, and
rear door sunshades.
A 12.3-inch full digital driver
display is Mitsubishi’s first fullscreen,
full-colour liquid crystal
display, projecting a variety of
information on to a large screen
with exceptional clarity. A
customisation function enables a
variety of information to be easily
combined and displayed.
The test vehicle’s six drive
modes are accessed via a centre
console mounted selector, and
range from normal to snow, and
almost everything in-between.
The suspension tune is very
much in-tune with our often
exacting driving conditions
and topography. It makes an
immediate impression with
its strong road holding, even
when you quicken the pace over
demanding undulating roads.
While the striking 20-inch
alloys make a powerful visual
statement, the ride quality suffers,
with more suspension noise at
low speeds over high frequency
bumps found on our urban roads.
