THE ICONIC Lyttelton 

steam tug’s sailing days could 

be over if it does not find 

about $300,000 needed for a 

refit. 

The 116-year-old tug has 

been out of commission since 

August, when the vessel’s 

boilers failed a safety inspection. 

“At the end of the day, if we 

don’t get the funding it will 

be the end of the tug,” said 

preservation society 

president Mike Bruce. 

The refit plan is 

on hold until at least 

$70,000 is raised, 

which will allow work 

to begin. 

The society has 

$30,000 in the 

bank, and $70,000 

guaranteed from

various organisations if it 

reaches a $190,000 

threshold. To achieve that, 

it must first find another 

$90,000. 

“We’re really treading 

water here until we get the 

funds,” said Bruce. 

Some of the larger costs 

are replacing the steam 

tubes and installing an 

electric pre-heater for 

the boiler. 

The refit could give the tug 

another 40 to 50 years of life, 

said Bruce. 

The society is finding it 

difficult to get charitable or 

corporate sponsors on board. 

“You do get despondent with 

all the rejected letters,” Bruce 

said.

Gnome away from home for Judy

JUDY RICE, a self-proclaimed 

‘mistress’ to her gnome Winkle, 

is about to store her collection 

of indoor and backyard buddies 

and embark on a country-wide 

adventure. 

The 69-year-old Sockburn 

resident has collected more than 

400 garden friends since 1990, 

but when she and her partner 

Murray Wilson move into a 30ft 

Rockwood caravan, only a few 

will join. 

“The house is on the market, 

and we have already placed a 

deposit on our caravan. I’m 

getting old – if we don’t go now, 

we will never do it. 

“Winkle, his girlfriend Trixie, 

Moonshine the Joker and a few of 

Murray’s will come. The rest will 

go into storage – they won’t be 

happy about it either.” 

Judy hopes to be off by 

June, picking up Murray from 

Ashburton and then following 

the warmer weather around the 

country. 

Having left in November 2022 

for a five-month trip across the 

North Island, she is not new to 

travelling for long periods. 

“It was on my bucket list for a 

long time and came to fruition 

after my mother died from agerelated 

issues in January 2022 and 

my husband’s death five weeks 

later, from surgery complications 

and dementia. 

“I’ve lived in Christchurch for 

about 45 years and I needed to go. 

GNOME HOME: With only 

a few gnomes able to fit 

into the caravan, the rest of 

Judy’s buddies will go into 

storage. 

I looked around while planning 

and thought, can I do this by 

myself? Then I noticed Winkle 

winking at me from his shelf. 

He makes me laugh, and other 

people laugh too. ” 

Some highlights of the prior 

trip included meeting the 

captain’s right-hand man on 

the Cook Strait ferry, flying in 

a plane, riding a double-decker 

bus, meeting a robot waiter and 

sandboarding. 

Judy documented their 

adventures in a blog, Judy and 

the Travelling Gnome, which is 

written from the perspective of 

Winkle and has attracted more 

than 17,000 viewers worldwide. 

She has also written a children’s 

book, Winkle Goes on Holiday, 

and an adult story, Winkle the 

Travelling Gnome, which is being 

worked on by her editor before 

hopefully going on sale this year. 

“I’ll keep writing as long as 

people keep reading – so another 

book is planned and will be about 

the new adventure.”

ALL ABOARD: The Lyttelton tug has been used for harbour 

cruises since it was retired in 1971. 

Lyttelton’s long life well lived 

THE LYTTELTON steam tug 

has a 116-year-long history. 

Built in 1907 by the Ferguson 

Brothers firm in Glasgow, it came 

to Lyttelton via the newly completed 

Suez Canal. It served as 

the port’s main tug until World 

War 2. 

Initially called Canterbury, 

its name was changed to 

Lyttelton in 1911. 

The vessel drew massive crowds 

in 1913 when it tugged the 

battlecruiser HMS New Zealand 

into harbour, and again in 1920 

when it assisted the battlecruiser 

HMS Renown, which was 

carrying King Edward VIII when

he was Prince of Wales during 

his tour of New Zealand. 

In 1942, the tug was requisitioned 

for service and armed by 

the Royal New Zealand Navy. 

She returned to normal port 

service in 1944. 

Following the introduction of 

the new tug Canterbury, the tug 

was retired in 1971. 

A museum ship ever since, 

it was leased for $2 a year to 

the Tug Lyttelton Preservation 

Society. In 1989, the society was 

gifted full ownership of the tug 

by the Lyttelton Harbour Board. 

It has maintained it up to present 

day, moored at Z wharf.

“We really don’t want to 

consider the fact we might not get 

the funding,” said Bruce. 

“We all believe we’re going to 

have a breakthrough moment.” 

The society is hopeful the tug 

will receive the necessary funding 

and refit within a year. 

A givealittle page has been set 

up to help crowdfund, but this 

has only brought in small sums 

to date. 

Bruce said the tug will need 

much larger grants to achieve its 

funding goal. 

Despite the challenges, it could 

be years until the society calls it 

quits on the tug as long as members 

stay passionate and keep up 

basic maintenance, said Bruce. 

The preservation society’s 

trained volunteers maintain the 

tug at weekly sessions, which 

Bruce said have a “phenomenal 

turnout”. 

The $300,000 refit is only the 

start of a long-term plan for a 

$1.5 million modernisation of the 

vessel. 

This would include a new 

rear canopy, visual aids and 

information for tour guests, and 

an interior renovation to make the 

tug more attractive for visitors.

Helping mums who need it most

HAVING A baby can be scary – 

especially if you’re on your own. 

That’s why Mickenzi Askin 

started making baby bundle 

packs to donate to mums in need 

of some help. 

The packs contain blankets, 

lotions, lip balms, toys, creams, 

clothing, bottles and more. 

“Each pack is different but all 

are designed for mums to be or 

struggling mums with newborns 

to one-year-olds. The only thing 

we ask is what the gender is as we 

don’t get enough gender neutral 

items. 

“They’re based on who needs 

it most and if we don’t have any 

available, we also offer other help 

like referrals to organisations 

who can give the right support. 

“In today’s world, the need 

to support women, especially if 

pregnant, has grown. It makes 

me happy knowing the help I 

once received is being passed 

on,” said Askin. 

She became pregnant at age 17 

with her daughter, Scarlett, who 

is now eight-and-a-half. 

“I was still in school so I lost a 

lot of friends, had no money and, 

at that time, there was not a lot of 

help out there for young mums. 

Askin and her friend Amber 

Braxton make up the packs. She 

is helping Braxton through her 

first pregnancy. 

Said Askin: “With Madeline, 

who is five-an-a-half, my second 

pregnancy, I had a partner 

who wasn’t physically there so 

I basically raised my children 

alone. 

“I also wasn’t producing any 

milk so a stranger donated theirs 

to the hospital. 

“They’ll never know how much 

I needed that and I can’t ever 

thank them. So I wanted to 

give back because I know how 

much it’s needed.” 

Askin knows situations 

change all the time, having 

made a “quick move” from 

Geraldine to the city about 

five years ago. She says that is 

often when new mums need 

help. 

“I moved

“I ran to St Vinnies in 

Hornby and said to the 

ladies there: ‘I really need 

some help’. 

“They were about five 

minutes from closing the shop

Light, tasty salad that’s easy to make 

NERYS WHELAN is a Kiwi 

chef with a passion for good food 

and while she concentrates on 

keto recipes, some like this Thai 

beef salad work for everyone. It 

is a great light, tasty option that 

is easily whipped up with a few 

pantry basics and cooked on the 

barbecue. It also makes the more 

expensive cut of meat go further. 

Thai beef salad 

Makes 4 

GF/SF/DF/EF 

For the zesty Thai dressing: 

1 Tbsp fresh ginger, finely grated 

½-1 chilli, seeds discarded, finely 

chopped 

1 clove garlic, crushed 

1 Tbsp fish sauce 

1 lime, zest and juice 

1 tsp rice wine vinegar or apple 

cider vinegar 

30g Allulose (or another easy 

dissolving sweetener) 

1 tsp Dijon mustard 

2 Tbsp sesame oil 

2 Tbsp fresh coriander, finely 

sliced 

½ tsp salt 

For the salad: 

400g scotch fillet steak, left 

covered at room temperature for 

30 minutes prior 

3 Tbsp olive oil 

1 tsp salt 

1 tsp cracked black pepper 

120g mesclun 

50g mung beans or bean sprouts 

8 cherry tomatoes, quartered 

¼ small red onion, finely sliced 

¼ cucumber, diced 

2 Tbsp fresh coriander, roughly 

chopped 

1 Tbsp fresh mint, roughly 

chopped 

30g peanuts, chopped 

Method: 

• First, make the dressing by 

putting everything in a jar and 

shaking to combine or whisk 

together in a bowl. You can make 

a larger batch of this and leave it 

in the fridge for a ready-made, 

light and fresh salad dressing, just 

omit the coriander so it doesn’t 

discolour. 

• Heat a heavy-based frying pan 

over a high heat. 

• Rub the steak with the oil, 

salt and pepper. Once the pan is 

very hot, add steak and cook to 

your liking. Once steak is cooked, 

remove from pan and let it rest 

while you prepare the rest of the 

salad. 

• On a large serving platter, 

scatter the mesclun on the bottom, 

then arrange the mung beans, 

cherry tomatoes, red onion, 

cucumber and herbs over the top. 

• Once the steak has rested for at 

least 5 minutes, slice it and pat dry 

any juices with a paper towel. 

• Lay the steak on top of the 

salad, sprinkle over the eanuts, 

season lightly with salt and pepper, 

then drizzle over about half of the 

dressing and serve. 

Nutrition note: Apple cider 

vinegar is believed to help 

moderate blood sugar levels, as 

well as lower cholesterol.

Outlander may not excite, won’t disappoint 

MITSUBISHI’S mid-size 

Outlander is on track to 

eclipse, yes that’s the name of 

its smaller sibling, and become 

the company’s biggest selling 

passenger vehicle in New Zealand. 

It was second behind the 

market-leading Toyota RAV4 

on our best selling SUV charts 

for 2023. Launched here at the 

end of 2021 it arrived here as the 

first model off the production 

line from the Mitsubishi, Nissan, 

Renault Alliance. 

Its success provided a dream 

start for this partnership. 

While the styling doesn’t send 

the heart racing, it won’t spark 

a bout of yawning. A clean and 

uncluttered contemporary lines 

are a little to generic to stand out 

Motoring with Bob Nettleton 

from the automotive crowd, being 

more of a blend in type. A facelift 

is due in the next 12 months to 

provide a welcome visual refresh. 

New underpinnings improve 

safety, body strength and 

steering stability, while multilink 

suspension and dual pinion 

electric power steering raises the 

ride quality and comfort bar. 

The Outlander’s 10-year 

150,000km new vehicle warranty 

is one of the better ones in New 

Zealand, although some rivals are 

starting to catch-up. 

The six model range is evenly 

split between two and four-wheel 

drive models in three trim levels 

LS, XLS and high spec VRX. 

Prices start at $41,990 for the 

2WD LS and top out at $75,990

Engine choice is limited to a 

135kW 2.5L motor or 185kW 

PHEV. Having to haul, depending 

on the model, an SUV weighing 

anywhere between 1575kg 

make is a big ask for this modest 

performing motor, but livelier 

with the PHEV power train. It’s 

mostly under load when driving 

over hilly terrain when the 

engine’s energy levels begin to flag 

and progress slows. 

A 245Nm war chest of torque at 

3600rpm doesn’t really get the job 

done that convincingly. Pleasantly 

smooth and responsive on flatter 

going, there is enough thrust to 

safely waft past slower moving 

traffic. 

A well resolved eight-speed 

sport mode constant variable 

transmission is one of Mitsubishi’s 

best. Step shift control changes 

do a fine job of mimicking a 

conventional automatic, with 

few slurring gear shifts that were 

once an undesirable trait of these 

transmissions. 

A generously proportioned 

passenger compartment earns 

top marks for spaciousness, 

practicality and being a relaxing 

long distance cruiser. Upping the 

comfort ante on the test vehicle 

were heated seats, three-zone 

automatic climate control, and 

rear door sunshades. 

A 12.3-inch full digital driver 

display is Mitsubishi’s first fullscreen, 

full-colour liquid crystal 

display, projecting a variety of 

information on to a large screen 

with exceptional clarity. A 

customisation function enables a 

variety of information to be easily 

combined and displayed. 

The test vehicle’s six drive 

modes are accessed via a centre 

console mounted selector, and 

range from normal to snow, and 

almost everything in-between. 

The suspension tune is very 

much in-tune with our often 

exacting driving conditions 

and topography. It makes an 

immediate impression with 

its strong road holding, even 

when you quicken the pace over 

demanding undulating roads. 

While the striking 20-inch 

alloys make a powerful visual 

statement, the ride quality suffers, 

with more suspension noise at 

low speeds over high frequency 

bumps found on our urban roads.
