A NEW charity helping
disabled people to sail is
hoping to be fully operational
by spring.
The SailAbility Canterbury
Charitable Trust held a sailing
fundraiser, which served as a
test drive for their proposed
service in Lyttelton.
“We want to support as
many people as possible to get
into sailing,” said trustee Ben
Acland.
“We know currently there
is no way to get people with
physical disabilities, like
paraplegics, into the boats.”
In the future, the trust
wants to work with the city
council to make wharfs in
Lyttelton more wheelchair
accessible.
The future sailing
programme would involve
volunteers of varying
experience who would assist
and teach interested disabled
people to sail small boats.
Acland anticipated the
trust will cater for different
programmes to people’s
varying disabilities.
It will be run out of the
Naval Point Club.
Volunteers hosted five
wheelchair users in an assisted
sailing event and held a raffle
HOPEFUL: Five wheelchair users were the first to experience SailAbility’s services
during a fundraiser at the Naval Point Club.
to raise funds for the start of
the programme.
SailAbility Wellington
has loaned the trust two
Hansa 303 single or two-crew
sailing keelboats to help get
the programme started in
Lyttelton. The trust is looking
to purchase its own vessels
after enough fundraising.
Acland looks to
Wellington’s SailAbility as
the model to replicate as it has
nearly 400 users of the service
a week. “I hope we’ll have a
range of people from kids
just having their first sail to
people who might actually
take up the sport of sailing
and enter regattas that we
organise.”
Required for
the RSA Poppy
Appeal 2024
Every day the RSA supports veterans throughout New Zealand, and the
demand for our services has never been higher.
Since 1990 New Zealand has created over 30,000 veterans under the age of
50, and there are around 140,000 living veterans across New Zealand. The total
number of those eligible for our support is much higher as the RSA provides
support to all current and former serving members of New Zealand’s Armed
Forces and their families.
We require COLLECTORS for our poppy sites on this side of Christchurch City
on Friday 19 April and Saturday 20 April 2024. Please email us at admin@
templetonrsa.org.nz or call us on (03) 349 4701 if you can assist and are
willing to spend two hours on either or both days at one of our Manned Sites.
