MEGA MONEY: The expansive home on Wood Ln, in Fendalton, had an asking price of $9.75m.
Mansion sale matches record
A FENDALTON mansion
has equalled the highest
purchase price for a home
sold in Christchurch, with the
opulent five-bedroom property
changing hands for $8 million.
Placed on the market by
retired national building
magnate Bill Horncastle, the
expansive estate at 8 Wood Ln
was listed at $9.75 million –
the highest asking price ever
sought in the city.
Ultimately a deal was
finalised this week, matching
the $8 million outlay for a
property at Wairarapa Tce,
Merivale, which sold in an offmarket
deal in 2021.
Co-listing agent Cameron
Bailey told OneRoof the Wood
Lane buyers, a Christchurch
family, had been interested
in the property since it was
advertised countrywide last
October.
“Wairarapa Tce was sold in
2021 in a property boom so it
will be interesting to see what
this gets in another boom
year,” Bailey said.
“Wairarapa Tce was a
modern property, but it was
only 1000sq m of land. Land
underpins value, improvement
value goes down, land value
holds price. So, I just think the
land value will take care of it in
time to come.”
The Wood Ln property,
which had a rateable valuation
of $8.34 million when it hit
the market, also features five
bathrooms and is situated
on 3300sq m of land, leading
Bailey to describe the grounds
as a “private botanical gardens”.
High-rise
fire worry
• By Chris Barclay
A RESIDENTS’ association
chief has sounded an alarm over
firefighters’ ability to deal with
high-rise blazes as multi-storey
residential complexes stay on the
drawing board for city suburbs.
With a controversial nationwide
housing intensification
programme poised to accelerate,
Tony Simons from the Riccarton
Bush Kilmarnock Association
fears Fire and Emergency New
Zealand (FENZ) may not be
equipped to deal
with fires in
apartment blocks
designated to reach
up to 10 storeys.
“If they’re
going to build
10-storey buildings
in Hornby and
Papanui, they’ll
have fire escapes
Tony
Simons
and probably sprinkler systems as
well. My concern is whether the
fire service could put out a fire in
one of those buildings in a hurry,”
he said.
“You need tall ladders and that
sort of thing. Could they (FENZ)
respond quickly if a tall building
caught alight in Hornby at 4
o’clock in the morning?”
Christchurch is currently
covered by one fire appliance
equipped with a 30-metre ladder
capable of reaching an eighth
floor.
Susie45 talks about infamous
Hurricanes handbag fiasco
• By Chris Barclay
SUSIE LANGMAID laughs when
asked about how much she paid
for her handbag.
“$18. I got it in Bali,” she reveals
from an island off Queensland.
Tracked down by The Star
following last week’s story on
Trade Me’s 25 quirkiest sale items,
Langmaid hasn’t always been so
light-hearted about her spending
on fashion accessories, especially
when she wasn’t actually spending
her own money.
The Australian didn’t exactly
enjoy what transpired after she
won an online auction for a $30
Roxy handbag in May, 2006 under
the username of Susie45.
The handbag was memorably
wielded by Tana Umaga to
reprimand Hurricanes teammate
Chris Masoe after the latter had an
altercation inside the Jolly Poacher
pub on Victoria St after the Super
14 final at Jade Stadium.
Owner Nicole Davies then
playfully listed the handbag on
Trade Me and was astounded
when the leading legitimate bid
was $22,800.
While Langmaid happily revisited
her role in the purchase on
behalf of a mystery businessman,
one aspect remains under wraps.
“I got hounded for months by
the media trying to get his identity.
It’s still private and privileged
information,” she reminded The
home in its place. However, the
discovery of two rooms dating
back to the original 1890s layout
provided inspiration for their new
home, which was constructed
around them. Bailey said the
Horncastle’s were delighted with
the cash unconditional offer with
a short settlement.
“It’s just what they took on
the day. They had bought another
property and they wanted
to move,” he said. “They’re very
Star, before reminiscing.
“I got approached by a close
friend who said someone wanted
to buy the handbag. I didn’t even
know who Chris Masoe was.”
Langmaid also heard from
Trade Me, dubious her interest was
legitimate, a reasonable request
given there had been an alcoholimpaired
bid for $100 million.
She ultimately regretted acting
as a conduit, although linking
with Davies was worthwhile: “I
was so happy that incident made
her a lot of money.”
It was not as lucrative for
Langmaid, who charged five per
cent of the purchase price as her
buyer’s agent fee, in this instance
$1140.
“I got a hamburger at the pub
when I handed it over and I had to
fight to get my phone ($275) phone
bill paid,” she said.
Highlighting the gap in list
recorded for a Christchurch
SAVING Governors Bay-
Teddington Rd from rising sea
levels is a priority for users of
the vulnerable route.
Diamond Harbour
Community Association
president Graeme Fraser said
implementing climate change
adaptation options to preserve
the road is important for
residents and visitors.
“If it was gone we’d be cut
off completely. We’d have to go
the long way around Gebbies
Pass, which would be quite the
change.”
The association supports
either flood proofing the road
or moving sections of it to
higher ground but says the
city council must act before
significant sea level rise.
“It would be good to see
some concrete steps taken
fairly soon because the road to
Diamond Harbour is already
quite vulnerable to flooding
when there’s high-tide.”
The low-lying road is a
focus area for city council’s
draft adaptation pathways
options because it is vulnerable
to flooding and critical to
accessing the southern end
of Lyttelton Harbour and the
eastern bays.
City council statistics show
the road is used by about 2000
vehicles a day.
The options proposed by
the city council’s coastal panel
are closing parts of the road
and building anew on higher
ground, flood proofing the
route by raising the road or
building a sea wall, or closing
the road and improving other
routes around the harbour
such as the Summit Rd to
Gebbies Pass Rd route.
A study by GNS science
estimated sea levels around the
harbour could rise by 38-47cm
over the next 30 years.
The road sits at sea level
and a coastal panel report
identified it as a high-risk area
for flooding if no adaptation
measures are taken.
Teddington Quarry manager
Barry Blatchford believes the
solution is simple.
“It’s pretty basic. All they
need to do is lift the road up.”
Purau residents use the
road as their main route
between the settlement and
Christchurch.
The coastal panel member
for Purau, Paul Dahl, said it
is crucial to implement an
adaptation plan before the
flooding risk becomes too
high.
“They will have to do work
before that, or it will be closed
and we’ll have to go the long
way round.”
Restoring
What’s the cost?
We’re preparing our work plan and budget for the
DAVID BENBOW, jailed for
life for murdering his childhood
friend Michael McGrath, claims
there has been a “miscarriage
of justice” as he appeals his
conviction and sentence.
The 54-year-old former prison
guard denied killing McGrath in
Halswell in 2017.
In October, after an earlier
hung jury, Benbow was found
guilty in the High Court at
Christchurch.
The Crown alleged Benbow
murdered the 49-year-old
after finding out he was in a
relationship with his partner of
17 years, Joanna Green.
McGrath was supposed to visit
Benbow about 9am on May 22,
2017, to help him move some
railway sleepers. The Crown said
the sleepers were a “ruse” and
once McGrath arrived Benbow
killed him with his .22 rifle and
later disposed of his body.
McGrath’s body and the
firearm have never been found.
Meanwhile, the defence said
McGrath never showed up
and Benbow was in no better
position than anyone to say what
happened to him.
Earlier this month, Benbowwas
sentenced by Justice Jonathan
Eaton to life imprisonment
with a minimum non-parole
period of 17 years.
The Court of Appeal granted
the NZ Herald access to Benbow’s
notice of appeal.
In the notice, signed by
Benbow, he is asked what the
grounds of his appeal are. He
said a “miscarriage of justice occurred
at my trial”.
“I will particularise my
grounds of appeal once my
lawyer has reviewed my case.”
He also said his sentence was
“manifestly excessive”.
Quakes and
other hazards
a concern for
home buyers
NINE IN 10 home buyers are now
considering natural hazard risk
when deciding on a property.
A new Earthquake Commission
Neilsen IQ report shows 89 per
cent of people who have recently
bought or are considering buying a
property have natural hazard risks
on their minds.
“We are highly exposed to
natural hazard risks in New
Zealand, including a range of
geological hazards like earthquakes
and volcanoes,” EQC chief
resilience and research officer Jo
Horrocks said.
“We also face increasing
exposure to severe weather events
and the resulting hazards, such as
flooding and coastal inundation.
“It is not surprising that the
devastation caused by the severe
weather events last year has made
New Zealanders more aware of
natural hazard risks.
“It is positive that people are
more aware about these risks and
Another river
crossed for
New Brighton
bridge upgrade
A NEW Pages Rd Bridge is a
step closer after being considered
in the of the draft Government
Policy Statement on Land
Transport for 2024.
The New Brighton bridge was
one of two key improvements
featured in the city council’s
submission to the GPS, which
outlines how the Government will
invest in land transport over the
next 10 years.
“The Pages Rd Bridge is a lifeline
project that will significantly
improve the ability of a wellpopulated
coastal community in
Christchurch to evacuate in the
event of a catastrophic tsunami
event. It is a regionally significant
resilience project and we would
like to see it specifically named
in the GPS,” said Mayor Phil
Mauger.
Mauger also wanted the Greater
Christchurch Public Transport
Future and Mass Rapid Transit
given priority by the Government.
“We would also like to see the
Greater Christchurch Public
Transport Futures and Mass
Rapid Transit projects included
as these are critical public
transport projects which invest in
improvements now to support our
projected population and urban
growth,” Mauger said.
• From page 1
There is also a 17m ladder,
which is mainly used to
extinguish fires and act as an
elevated monitor to assess how,
for example, a factory fire was
developing. It reaches about four
floors.
Both appliances are based
at the FENZ headquarters in
Kilmore St.
But FENZ Canterbury
assistant commander Steve
Kennedy sought to allay
concerns saying resourcing was
subject to regular review.
“At the moment that (two
ladders) is
deemed to be
sufficient. It’s
like anything,
we’d always like
to have more,”
he said.
Kennedy was
confident the
centrally-based
ladder appliances
would reach suburban high-rises
is a timely fashion.
“Our standards of cover
require our first appliance to be
there within eight minutes, the
specialist (ladder) appliances
would be a bit behind that, it
depends on the location,” he
said.
“Christchurch is a bit of a
wagon wheel really, we’re still
pretty central where those
appliances are located.”
Kennedy said the key with
buildings featuring between four
and 10-storeys were the in-built
measures like fire escapes and
sprinkler systems.
“If we’re looking at buildings
between four and 10-storeys it’s
really the ‘life safety’ features
that save lives more than our
aerial response or appliance
response.
“They’d the first factor in
getting people out safely, then we
come along and put it out.”
Three months ago the city
council asked the Government
for permission to pause work
on implementing new housing
intensification rules which would
make it easier for developers to
build homes and commercial
buildings taller and closer
together.
However, Housing Minister
Chris Bishop denied that request
on March 1 because the plan
change was necessary to increase
development capacity “as fast as
possible”.
City councillors are scheduled
to receive a housing intensification
update from staff on Tuesday.
The city council sought to apply
the brakes on the plan change
process because it did not believe
intensification rules brought in by
the previous Government were
suited to the city’s needs.
It was also responding to the
concerns of many homeowners –
including residents’ associations
– who feared the new rules would
devalue homes and lead to a loss
of amenities like green spaces and
direct sunlight.
No money for creditors after auction sale
• By Chris Barclay
AN ILAM property connected
to a failed project manager in
debt to tradespeople around
town has been sold, although his
creditors will not benefit from
the proceeds.
The sale of the five-bedroom
house in Chevron Place was
finalised earlier this month on
behalf of Waterstone Insolvency
after Marc Findlay and his wife
Deborah Jane Robinson-Findlay
were placed into receivership in
December last year.
Listed with a rateable value
of $1.18 million, but subject
to extensive additions and
renovations since 2021, the
property fetched about $1.6
million.
Once debts were cleared with
a finance company and a bank,
Robinson-Findlay, the registered
owner of the property, received
around $500,000.
“The proceeds from sale are
sufficient to meet the secured
claims on the property,” said
Peter Drennan from Waterstone.
It is understood the secured
claims on the property related
to money owed to an Aucklandbased
finance company which
appointed Waterstone, and a
bank.
There were no other claims
related to Robinson-Finlay
SOLD: The property at
Chevron Place, Ilam, owned
by failed project manager
Marc Findlay and his wife
Deborah at has been sold
on behalf of receivers.
although it is believed a bill of
around $8000 was settled with a
business which did work on the
property.
Marc Findlay was declared
bankrupt in 2017 after amassing
significant debts and creditors
might have to follow that course
of action again if they are to
recoup alleged losses associated
with construction projects he
oversaw.
That action would rely on an
official assignee discovering
assets which could be sold and
distributed to creditors.
Any claims lodged against
Marc Findlay were not covered
by the house sale as the couple’s
receiverships were treated
separately.
When the sale was revealed
by The Star last month, plumber
Darren Maher, who claimed
he was owed $65,000 for work
done on a Findlay-run project in
2017, hoped to be compensated
through the house sale.
However, because that debt was
included in Findlay’s bankruptcy
it has essentially been voided by
that process.
Findlay’s bankruptcy was
discharged on January 30, 2021,
and he then set up as a sole
trading project manager.
He told The Star last month he
had not worked for six months, a
factor leading to the family home
being sold.
Man who shot teen dead at party
• By Sam Sherwood
A CONVICTED killer who
shot a teen dead at a party has
been declined parole at his first
appearance before the board.
Connor Whitehead, 16, was
shot dead in Casebrook on
November 5, 2021.
In May, Joshua David Craig
Smith and Daniel Nelson Sparks
were found not guilty of murder
but guilty of manslaughter.
Smith, who fired the fatal shot,
was jailed for seven years. Sparks
was jailed for six years, three
months.
Smith has now appeared
before a parole board for the first
time.
At the beginning of the
hearing, panel member
Campbell Roberts told Smith the
board had met with Whitehead’s
family.
They told the board although
the killing happened in 2021,
it was still “very fresh in their
memories”.
“They’re still dealing with it.
They spoke about the continued
pain, loss, grief and suffering.”
The family felt they had been
given a life sentence, and would
live with the memories of what
happened to Whitehead for the
rest of their lives.
They felt Smith could’ve
made a different decision, and
EMOTIONAL: Joshua Smith
(right) cried as he was
addressed in court by
Connor Whitehead’s father
James (above).
encouraged him to do the
rehabilitation offered to him and
break clear of his gang influence.
They believed he should stay in
prison.
“Mr Smith is someone who
may be safe to release at some
point in this sentence. He
accepted the board was going
to need to see evidence he’s
addressed his rehabilitative
needs.”
GEORGE
HEARD
“What we are seeking is a
date for further consideration
and a direction from the board
as to the relevant steps, or
activities that they expect will be
completed by that date.”
Kirby suggested the next date
would be one that gave him
time to complete a programme
and receive individual psych
treatment.
Smith remained willing to
meet with Whitehead’s family
to express his remorse in person
and apologise.
Kirby said Smith had been
attacked by members of the
Crips gang while in prison.
He also addressed some
“recent misconducts”, including
a recent incident where Smith
admitted head-butting a fellow
prisoner.
There was other alleged
misconduct, which Smith
denied, including involving
contraband. The misconduct
had resulted in Smith’s security
classification going up to high.
Smith told the board he had
applied to have the contraband
charges dismissed as he claimed
it had been established there was
“very little evidence to support
their claims”.
He had also applied for
a review of his security
classification. Board member
Alan Hackney told Smith there
were several possibilities before
the board, including asking
for a psychologist’s report and
bringing him back again before
the board earlier, or wait for him
to be assessed at a later stage.
He preferred to know what
was happening with his
psychologist assessment so he
could start his “journey through
(the) rehabilitation process”.
The board agreed to request
a psychologist’s report and
they would see him again in
five months. It would also give
him more time to sort out the
allegations around misconduct
and his security classification.
“It doesn’t mean we will look
at releasing you then, clearly you
need to do some rehabilitation
that will take some time.
“At least then we will know,
you will know, what that
rehabilitation will look like.”
At trial, the Crown alleged
both men responded to a call
for help from Sparks’ son, as
the party got out of control and
he was threatened, by arming
themselves with loaded firearms
– a Stevens shotgun and a
Mossberg shotgun – in Smith’s
VW Golf.
About 11pm, the two men
arrived at the party. Sparks’ son
pointed out the group of people
acting aggressively towards him.
Sparks approached them and
there was a verbal argument.
Gang signs were pulled and
there was yelling.
Two shots were eventually
fired, one from each of the
firearms, one by each of the
defendants.
The two shots were about six
seconds apart. The Crown said
the most likely scenario was that
Smith fired the fatal shot that
struck Whitehead and Sparks
fired a shot from the Mossberg
into the air, likely from the car.
Whitehead was shot in the
chest. His injuries were not
Record price paid for Goldie masterpiece
• By Daniel Alvey
A NEW RECORD was set for
the most expensive Charles
Goldie painting sold when six
went under the hammer on
Monday.
The paintings were owned by
the late Mainfreight co-founder
Neil Graham.
On the night, four of the
six paintings were sold at an
Art+Object
auction in
Auckland.
Te Ahoo-te-Rangi
Wharepu, A
Noted Waikato
Warrior fetched
$2.1 million
including the
buyer’s premium
and GST
Neil
Graham
making it the most expensive
Goldie painting ever sold.
The previous record of $1.8
million was set by a painting
sold at an auction in Sydney last
year.
The paintings were being sold
by Graham’s children Dean,
Greg and Tania.
“When I walked into the
gallery it sent shivers up my
spine and I got all teary-eyed
and it was quite emotional.
“It was very nerve-racking.
We’d never done anything like
TOP PRICE: Te Aho-o-te-Rangi Wharepu, A Noted Waikato Warrior (left) sold for $2.1
million including buyer interest and GST, breaking the previous record of $1.8 million. Lot
5: Kamariera Te Hau Takiri Wharepapa (right) is still unsold and is valued at $1-1.6 million.
that before. I’d never been
to an auction before in my
life,” Dean said.
Art+Object art director
Ben Plumbly said there
were about 50 people at
the auction house and
hundreds joined online.
“It’s not the easiest
market at the moment for
discretion spending and
presenting six paintings by the
same artist at the price level they
Dean
Graham
were was never going
to result in hundreds of
bidders.”
He said two of the
paintings were sold to
people in the auction
house and two were sold
to online bidders. All the
buyers were from New
Zealand.
“They’ve all gone to
New Zealand collectors and
they’ve all gone to genuine
collectors of the artist’s work.”
Two of the paintings remain
unsold with one currently under
negotiation.
Dean said the paintings had
been in storage due to none
of the family having a place
suitable for them.
“Now someone else can enjoy
them on their wall rather than
being hidden away, which is
not the right thing to do with
paintings like that, “ Dean said.
Lot 6: Memories’: Hera
He said the family had no
expectations on what they were
going to sell for.
“We didn’t know what to
expect really.
“The market dictated how it
was going to go and we’re pretty
happy,” Dean said.
Dean said the money will help
Champion swimmer making
a splash in world of dance
• By Jean Edwards
RISING BALLET star and teen
swimming sensation Hamish
Giddens has mastered the art of
fluid movement.
The Burnside High School
16-year-old, who holds four
national age-group titles in the
pool, will fly to New York City
next month to compete in the
world’s biggest student ballet
competition - the Youth America
Grand Prix.
Giddens will perform a
variation and modern solo
judged by a panel of top ballet
school and dance company
directors, and take part in
adjudicated classes in the hope of
winning a scholarship to train in
Europe.
After placing third in the
men’s classical category at
regional semi-finals in Sydney
last September, Giddens is poised
to leap into the world of dance.
“When you dance it’s like
nothing else is really happening.
Expressing yourself through
movement feels like a completely
different world to expressing
yourself through words,” he said.
“Being on stage is the best
feeling, I can’t describe it. It’s just
amazing, it makes everything
worth it.”
The talented teenager’s
growing set of medals and
awards includes gold in the
1500m freestyle at last year’s
New Zealand short course
swimming championships,
breaking a decades-old
Canterbury record for 15-yearold
boys formerly held by an
Olympian.
Giddens also claimed the
800m freestyle, 400m freestyle
and 200m backstroke titles,
and silver in the 1500m open
men’s category, making him
the youngest swimmer in the
country to win an open medal.
“That was surreal. I was not
expecting to get that silver medal
and a Canterbury record as well
for my age group. It was a great
feeling,” he said.
Part artist, part athlete,
Giddens said he benefited from
the complimentary aspects of
swimming and ballet.
“Ballet has helped me take
on a lot of stroke corrections
for swimming. Swimming has
definitely given me an endurance
part for my ballet, which is
definitely needed for both
sports,” he said.
Giddens – who comes from
a family of six – took his
first ballet steps at the age of
four, copying his older sister
practising in the lounge.
He has also followed in the
footsteps of his great aunt
Lorraine Peters, Southern Ballet
founder and Christchurch
the various complimentary aspects of the two disciplines.
master tutor and choreographer.
His father Kelvin Giddens said
Hamish showed an aptitude for
dance at a young age.
“He’s a clever boy, he’s really
driven, he’s very committed,
determined and goal-driven, and
quite unique in his ability to set
out to achieve what he aims to
do,” he said.
“Both physically and mentally
he picks things up really, really
easily. He’s very focused, so I
think he has the head game to
make things happen.”
Giddens wakes at 5.30am for
swim training from 6-7.30am
five mornings a week, including
Saturday.
He also trains at Convergence
Dance Studios four days a week.
Kelvin said he enjoyed seeing
friendships blossom between
Hamish and other swimmers
“When you dance it’s
like nothing else is really
happening. Expressing
yourself through movement
feels like a completely
different world to
expressing yourself through
words.”
– Hamish Giddens
and ballet students, and his
achievements in two technically
and physically demanding
pursuits.
“A number of his swimming
coaches have commented how
quickly he picks up corrections.
“The corrections in ballet are
minute so he can apply that to
his swimming. His core strength
he gets from ballet is an amazing
platform for him to swim off
and the fitness he takes from
swimming transfers really well
to ballet,” he said.
Giddens trains at Convergence
under artistic director Olivia
Russell.
She said he stood out for his
ideal proportions, long lines,
musicality, stage presence
and quick ability to apply
corrections.
“For the majority of even
exceptional dancers, it takes a
good chunk of time to process
a correction. You give him
information and he processes
it very quickly to his body,” she
said.
“He applies it and keeps that
application, so when he comes
back to your next coaching
session it’s still there, which is
really rare and a brilliant quality.
He’s not just a technician, he
actually has a great future as an
artist as well.”
Russell said swimming had
given Giddens the power of
endurance, which was vital in
the world of professional male
ballet dancing.
“They have to be as fit as a
swimmer, as fit as a runner, they
have to be strong enough to lift
humans above their heads and
they have to make it all look
easy. They have to be musical,
they have to be artistic and
then there’s the ballet technique
itself,” she said.
Despite the physical, technical
and artistic skills involved,
Russell said perceptions about
boys and dance still needed to
change.
“My own son had a period
of time last year as a wee eightyear-old
hiding in the library
at lunchtime because he was a
‘ballet boy’. I think that’s quite
heartbreaking,” she said.
“I think we should promote it
rather than ridicule it.”
Russell said international
competitions like the Youth
America Grand Prix and Prix
de Lausanne could help to
launch the careers of aspiring
professional dancers, by creating
global connections with elite
ballet schools and companies.
While tuition fees are often
included in scholarship offers,
travel and accommodation is
not, so the Giddens family has
set up a Givealittle page to help
financially support Hamish
overseas.
He has been offered direct
entry to The Royal Ballet
School’s 2025 summer intensive,
when he will spend up to five
weeks training in London.
He is also taking part in the
The Royal New Zealand Ballet’s
national mentor programme,
under which he will be mentored
by dancers and the company’s
artistic team over the course of
the year.
Russell said Giddens had a
bright future in dance.
“I am very proud of him, on
all levels. Everything that he
has pushed through technically,
emotionally, mentally. He has
really grown as a whole person
and dancer. I’m really excited to
see his dreams come true,” she
said.
Giddens dreams of one day
dancing for The Royal Ballet in
London or Dutch National Ballet
in Amsterdam.
“Ballet feels like my heart is
fulfilled when I do it and it’s my
passion. Ballet is definitely what
I want to do with my life. It’s my
favourite thing in the world,” he
said.
That dream is taking shape,
one step at a time.
Spanish solution sought for rare illness
A CHRISTCHURCH man
living with a rare, potentially
fatal abdominal illness has
changed tack with his life-saving
treatment plan in Europe.
Oscar Parker, who was
diagnosed with abdominal
vascular compression syndrome
(AVCS) in December, originally
planned to undergo surgery in
Germany, providing $120,000
could be raised through
donations.
By yesterday, nearly $60,000
had been contributed by 583
donors via Parker’s givealittle
page.
Four years after his health
started deteriorating, Parker
learned AVCS was the cause of
his excruciating abdominal pain,
relentless fatigue, disrupted sleep,
nausea and malnourishment
after Dusseldorf-based vascular
surgeon Wilhelm Sandmann
was consulted.
As he continues to battle
symptoms of an illness which
rarely affects males, Parker has
decided to seek a solution in
Spain, where vascular surgeon
Alejandro Rodriguez Morata
carries out a less invasive
procedure.
The 21-year-old had pondered
the switch for two months,
according to his sister and family
spokesperson, Cushla Parker.
“Oscar has made the decision
after further investigation and
consult zoom calls to change
surgeons should we raise enough
funds,” she said via a post on
Oscar’s givealittle page.
“This change has come
about due to Oscar’s types of
compressions and method of
surgery needed for this.”
Malaga-based Morata’s surgery
is also expected to require less
time in the operating theatre,
while there is also a believed
to be a reduced risk of post-op
complications.
Cushla Parker said the switch
from Germany to Spain did
not alter the fundraising drive,
which launched in December.
The procedure is estimated
to cost $86,000 while the
family also has to cover flights,
accommodation, post-op
rehabilitation and loss of income
when accompanying Oscar
overseas.
Once a thriving musician,
singer and hockey player at St
Bede’s College, despite being
diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes
when he was 13, Parker is now a
shell of his former self.
The syndrome occurs when a
sufferer’s blood vessels are under
abnormal pressure, limiting the
size of the vessel and the amount
of blood flowing through it.
That lack of blood flow can
cause a person to feel weak and
experience acute pain.
“His symptoms prevent him
from being a typical 21-year-old.
Essentially he’s just pretty much
at home all the time,” Cushla
Parker said.
“It is overwhelming
emotionally for our family at
times to watch our loved one
suffer.
“But we are so fortunate we
have a surgical treatment option
as many with rare diseases don’t.
“We hold on to the fact we
have this option and this is what
drives us as we are extremely
grateful for the surgical
intervention opportunity
overseas for Oscar to improve his
quality of life.”
Oscar Parker can be supported
cause/help-oscar-fund-medicaltreatment-not-available
MAJOR ILLNESS: Oscar Parker’s battle with abdominal
vascular compression syndrome has had a drastic effect
on his health and well-being. After careful consideration,
Parker has chosen to switch to a less invasive surgical
solution offered by Dr Alejandro Rodriguez Morata, a
leading vascular surgeon.
BURNT OUT: A deliberately lit pallet fire parked outside an Addington apartment complex
left two cars extensively damaged on Tuesday night and sent smoke billowing through
the neigbourhood.
‘Troublemakers’ blamed for pallet fire
A DELIBERATELY lit pallet fire
extensively damaged two cars
parked outside an Addington
apartment complex on Tuesday
night.
Police confirmed the fire was
being treated as suspicious after
two people were seen near the
wooden pallets shortly before the
fire broke out in Walsall St about
7pm.
Witness Connor Nicholson-
Plank said the scene was “pretty
hectic”, with emergency services
battling the “massive fire”.
He told the New Zealand
Herald he spoke with a police
officer who told him “a couple
of troublemakers” set the pallets
on fire.
Residents were advised to
close windows as thick plumes
of smoke enveloped the area
until Fire and Emergency New
Zealand crews extinguished the
blaze around 7.30pm.
An ambulance was also
dispatched to the scene as a
precaution.
Police were scanning CCTV
cameras in the vicinity in a bid to
identify the men.
BLACK SPOT: Over the last 10 years there have been
27 crashes at this roundabout. The city council will be
installing several safety measures.
Upgrades coming for
dangerous intersection
WORK ON essential safety
improvements to the busy
Cashmere Rd/Colombo St/
Centaurus Rd/Dyers Pass Rd
roundabout will get under way
after Easter weekend.
There have been 27 crashes
at the roundabout over the last
10 years and the city council
will be installing several safety
measures.
The work includes installing
safe speed measures, designed
to slow traffic, on all four
approaches to the intersection.
The measures will give
motorists more time to react
and avoid a crash and the slower
speeds will help reduce the
impact of a crash, a city council
spokesperson said.
The works involve new
kerb alignments, footpath
improvements and new road
markings as well as installing a
concrete lip around the centre of
the roundabout to help reduce
the speed of travel.
There will be several
traffic management layouts
implemented while the work is
completed, including a variation
of temporary traffic lights,
shoulder closures, lane drops
and temporary on-street parking
removal.
Work is expected to finish in
early July.

A MARINE conservation
academic says the New Zealand
Whale and Dolphin Trust turned
down funding for a project from
SailGP due to concerns about its
behaviour during racing.
The future of SailGP in
Whakaraupō Lyttelton Harbour
next year is also in doubt after
an appearance by endangered
Hector’s dolphins saw a racing
day cancelled over the weekend.
SailGP chief executive Sir
Russell Coutts has come out
firing since, saying there was too
much red tape and racing did not
need to be halted.
He claimed Hector’s dolphins
were not endangered and a
statement from Otago University
professor Liz Slooten saying as
such was a “lie”.
Hector’s dolphins are listed
as threatened – nationally
vulnerable, “which means they
have been assessed as facing a
high risk of extinction in the
medium term”, Department of
Conservation deputy director
general operations Henry Weston
said.
Emeritus Otago University
professor Steve Dawson was
unimpressed by Sir Russell’s
comments.
“Sir Russell is one of the world’s
great sailors but he’s not a dolphin
expert. It’s the International
Union for Conservation of Nature
that considers the species to be
endangered and they are the
principal international body that
evaluates the threat status of our
animals and plants worldwide.”
Hector’s dolphins are listed by
the Department of Conservation
as nationally vulnerable.
Dawson had been one of the
advisers on SailGP’s Marine
Under New Zealand law, no
vessel could go faster than five
he said, and that would be the
case wherever SailGP was held.
applaud that. It was the right
decision,” he said.
Dawson said he was also a
part of the New Zealand Whale
and Dolphin Trust, which had
turned down SailGP funding for
a conservation project because of
greenwashing concerns.
“We ended up declining that
funding on the basis that we
didn’t feel that their behaviour
over last year’s racing was
adequate in relation to this
endangered species.
“I don’t want to take
money from any activity that
potentially posed harm to the
animals that I’m studying. I
think that’s inappropriate,”
Dawson said.
His view remained the same
now, he said, and added he
would not accept funding from
the fishing industry, either.
Concerns had been raised
about the safety of Hector’s
dolphins prior to the event,
when a DOC memo revealed
two dolphins were sighted on
the course in 2023, but racing
continued – despite the race
director being told to stop it.
The harbour has been a
marine mammal sanctuary
since 1988.
Weston said more than one
upokohue Hector’s dolphin was
present over the weekend.
“At this time of year, mothers
and calves are present in the
harbour and calves have been
seen on the course this weekend.
“Newborn calves and young
animals are vulnerable to boat
strike as they are less aware of
risk, spend more time on the
surface and dive more slowly
than mature dolphins,” he said.
OPINION 19
Your chance to give plan feedback
Mayor Phil
Mauger talks
about rates
rises and the
Long Term
Plan
YOU’VE PROBABLY heard
us talking a lot lately about our
draft Long Term Plan (LTP) and
the projected rates rises.
Last week we publicly released
Christchurch City Council’s
Draft Long Term Plan from 2024
to 2034, setting out the services
we plan to deliver, the things we
plan to build and how we plan to
pay for it.
Like everyone, whether you’re
in business or trying to keep
your household running, the
council is also facing significant
pressure from inflation, interest
rates and insurance costs.
This has led to a projected
rates rise for next year of 13.2 per
cent, or $8 a week for the average
household. This includes 4.4 per
cent for inflation, 0.9 per cent for
insurance increases, 1.7 per cent
for debt servicing cost increases
– all up that is 7 per cent of next
year’s rate rise before we even
look at anything specific to the
council.
The remainder includes 2.2
RISING: The construction of Te Kaha has added 2.2 per
cent to the projected rates rise of 13.2 per cent for 2024.
per cent for Te Kaha build
costs, which we committed to
back in 2022, and 1.8 per cent
because we are getting a smaller
dividend from Christchurch City
Holdings Limited (CCHL) this
year.
There were two key decisions
a majority of councillors agreed
to during the drafting of the LTP
which also have an impact on the
rate rises.
The first was a decision to
maintain existing levels of
service – the things we plan to
do. This means we will continue
to deliver work on our roads,
in our parks, all things water
and rubbish collection, with no
changes.
If we had decided to look at
decreasing some levels of service,
then rates rises may have been
less but it would mean that the
council would provide less.
The second was the decision
not to continue with a business
case from CCHL on a proposal
to increase its dividend to the
council by changing the way it
manages the Council-owned
companies. This would look at
how much of each company the
council owns.
If we had continued with the
business case, it would have
gone out for public consultation
showing how we could
potentially have rates savings in
the future.
I did not agree with these
decisions because I think we
should have looked at all options
to minimise the rates increase,
but a key part of any LTP is
finding the options with majority
support around the council table.
These two decisions highlight
the types of tough decisions we
had to make during the drafting
of the LTP.
We know that a 13.2 per
cent increase is high, so we are
continuing to look at options to
bring this down when the final
plan is adopted in June. Part of
this is getting your feedback and
ideas.
Our draft LTP is now open
for public feedback until 21
April. I urge you to look at our
proposals, think about what
you would like to see the council
doing, and make a submission.
Remember, none of these
decisions are set in stone.
Do you agree with what we’re
proposing? Have we got the
balance right? Is there anything
you think we should cut, delay, or
speed up?
Please tell us.
For me, it’s also about keeping
up momentum. It’s great to see
Te Kaha, Canterbury’s multiuse
arena, and the new Court
Theatre building both rise out
of the ground at pace. We will
be opening Matatiki Hornby
Centre on April 19, and work
will be underway on the new
South Library – Ōmōkihi – and
along the Ōtākaro-Avon River
Corridor.
To keep things moving, it
means taking care of the basics
that make Christchurch the best
place in New Zealand to live,
work, play and invest. But we
have to do this based on what our
city can afford. That’s the balance
we’ve tried to strike with this
draft LTP.
So please, tell us what you think
– this will help us shape the final
LTP.
United introduces raft of new
players to defend league title
• By Sam Coughlan
A NEW-LOOK Christchurch
United team won’t panic if
results don’t go their way early
on.
United have been forced to
make changes to the team which
won the Southern League,
Chatham Cup and English Cup
last season due to an exodus of
players.
United start their Southern
League campaign at home
against Nomads – who they beat
2-1 in pre-season – tonight.
Aaron O’Driscoll, Eoghan
Stokes and Daniel MacLennan
are all pursuing opportunities
in Australia, while Eddie
Wilkinson followed former
coach Paul Ifill to Wellington
Olympic and last season’s topscorer
Sam Philip has joined
Birkenhead United.
Former captain Matt Tod-
Smith joined rivals Cashmere
Technical.
Among the new recruits are
Central League stars Joel Stevens
(Wellington Olympic), Ta Eh
Doe (Napier City Rovers) and
Matt Brazier, who was the top
scorer in the league at Petone
under Ryan Edwards – United’s
new coach. Dutch goalkeeper
Stefan van Dijk, and defenders
Adam Huskic (Bosnia and
Herzegovina) and Michael
Hornsby (Germany) have joined
from overseas as well.
Edwards said getting the team
to gel on the pitch will take time.
“Players getting to know each
other, players getting to know the
coach, players getting to know
the style of play and how we want
to connect.”
He said it would take time for
everyone to learn the style of play
he wants to implement – with
short and fast passing in the
build-up to invite pressure before
counter-attacking. It’s a different
style to last year’s slower pace.
“We’re starting to show signs
of playing like a team, but it’s in
patches at the moment, so it’s
going to take us another six or
so weeks to really start to bring
it out.”
An example of what Edwards
is trying to implement was
evident in United’s pre-season
win over Nelson Suburbs. An
18-pass move starting from their
own goal-line culminated in a
goal for winger David Yoo.
Edwards said despite
the personnel changes, his
expectation is to challenge
for the title.
“That’s a given for us
because of the stature of
the club and the history
and what the ambition of
the club is as well.”
Ferrymead Bays also
open their campaign
tonight, hosting newly-promoted
Universities.
Bays coach Alan Walker said
they will need to be wary of their
opponents in their first game at
this level.
“They’ll be fired up for the
game and we’ve got to counter
that and make sure that we’re
disciplined in what we do.
“I expect that they’ll be okay.
They’ll be a good team to the
league.”
Cashmere Technical have
Ryan
Edwards
drawn the short straw,
making the trip down to
play Dunedin City Royals on
tomorrow night.
They have made a few changes
to last season’s team, with the
signing of former Christchurch
United captain Tod-Smith the
standout. Cashmere Tech come
into the match on the back of
winning early silverware in the
Steve Sumner Cup after
beating United 4-3.
FC Twenty host Nelson
Suburbs tomorrow in a
rematch of last year’s finalround
game, which ended
3-1 to Suburbs.
FC Twenty were
relegated last season but
were invited to rejoin the
league after Dunedinbased
Green Island pulled
out, citing costs.
The final game of the round
will see Coastal Spirit host
Selwyn United at English Park.
Coastal have picked up a
number of high-profile
players this season, including
former Cashmere Tech captain
Andrew Storer, plus Ferrymead
Bays duo Alex Macleam and
Danny Boys, in an effort to
improve on their third-place
finish last season and push for
the National League.
HIGH-PROFILE sports
administrator David Moffett
appears to have tried to make
amends for an oversight
regarding the name of his
planned Christchurch-based
NRL franchise.
The Star revealed last week
the Linwood Keas, Canterbury’s
top rugby league club, were
taken by surprise over Moffett’s
name for the franchise he heads
SYDENHAM’S women’s captain
Felicity Robertson celebrated
the end of a fantastic summer
by leading the team to their first
one-day trophy in 30 years.
Sydenham beat Lancaster Park
on Saturday in an underdog
victory in the final, with Park
heavy favourites before the game.
Robertson (right) was awarded
player of the match after she took
2/37 then top-scored with 33 as
Sydenham chased down Park’s
136 all out.
She said it was great to be able
to contribute in the final.
“To be able to contribute, and
have a few partnerships along the
way, and then from a bowling
– if it flies – the South Island
Kea.
Feathers were ruffled, and legal
advice was being considered.
Linwood president Andrew
Auimatagi told The Star last
week: “Our brand is 111-yearsold,
so yeah, we need to do what
we can to protect our brand.”
But this week, Auimatagi and
Moffett are not commenting.
Said Moffett: “We don’t have
anything to share publicly
at the moment. We will, but
until that’s the time, we don’t
team to a win.
“It’s always good from my
perspective.”
Robertson’s season could
have anything to say. I’m not
prepared to talk about private
matters.”
Said Auimatagi: “I’ve consulted
our board, and we have
no more comments to add.”
But The Star has learned,
Moffett met with Linwood
officials earlier this week,
after outlining the franchise’s
plans to the Canterbury Rugby
League board on Monday night.
He apologised to Linwood
officials for not discussing the
tied the knot in November with
husband Hamish Robertson,
himself a handy cricketer who
played for Sydenham’s division 1
side this season.
Last month she captained her
domestic side Otago to victory
in the Hallyburton Johnstone
Shield, contrubuting 38 in
another successful run chase.
She said the last few months
had been “fantastic.”
“Obviously starting off the
summer getting married, which
was good, and getting used to the
name change.
“It’s been a season for onedayers.
Obviously, we won the
HBJ and now this. It’s been
good.”
Last week, Moffett told The
Star not contacting Linwood
was a “mistake”, but one he was
looking to rectify.
“We have been moving so
fast that a couple of things
have fallen through the cracks,
and one of them has been the
Linwood Keas, and I’m onto
that,” he said.
The Star’s sources say Linwood
is still not overly happy
with the situation, but are
unsure what they can do about
it. Spending money on a lawyer
First double
since 1992
for Burnside
West Uni
• By Sam Coughlan
BURNSIDE WEST Uni clinched
a historic double on Saturday,
winning the Christchurch Metro
two-day competition to go with
their one-day title.
It was also Burnside’s second
consecutive two-day title.
The last time they achieved the
double was in 1992.
Captain Matt Hay said it was a
special achievement.
“It’s massive for us. Obviously
we had a really good bunch of
guys who worked hard, so we
knew we were capable of doing
this.
“But there’s having the ability
to do it, but actually being able to
pull it off is another thing.”
Burnside ended up losing their
final match to Sydenham – but
Lancaster Park’s loss to East
Shirley on the same day meant
they finished comfortably on the
top of the table.
Hay said it was an anti-climatic
end to the season.
“I guess that’s the nature of the
competition.
“We knew we’d won the
competition by the time we took
the field (in the fourth innings).
So I guess if we’d been honest
we probably didn’t have that
desperation.”
Hay said the team are looking
forward to going into next season
with a target on their backs.
“I think it is good. It keeps you
sharp.
“I think there were definitely
times you could tell teams are
definitely up for playing us, and I
think that will just continue next
year.”
Knights claim
pre-season title
Riccarton Knights have
won the Canterbury
Rugby League pre-season
competition. The Knights
beat Halswell Hornets
30-22 at Nga Puna Wai
on Saturday in the final
to give them a confidence
boost heading into the first
round of games on April
6. Riccarton led 18-16 in
a closely fought first half
before pulling away in
the second to seal victory.
The teams will next be in
action in the first round
of the premiership, with
Riccarton playing Hornby
Panthers and Halswell
hosting Eastern Eagles.
Cricketers off to
inaugural
R66t Dubai Cup
Six young Christchurch
cricketers will travel to
the United Arab Emirates
on April 7 as part of an
under-15 South Island
invitational girls team
to play in the inaugural
R66t Dubai Cup. Sophie
Gibb (St Margaret’s), Lexie
Boon (St Margaret’s), Lily
Rumble (CGHS), Lilah
Cowan (CGHS), Daisy
Thake (St Andrew’s) and
Kate Sharpe (Rangi Ruru),
all year 10, will also take
part in a coaching camp
hosted by England batter
Joe Root. St Margaret’s
College first XI coach
Amanda Hardy will
manage the team. They
will be coached by former
White Ferns batter Kirsty
Bond. Their first game will
Four golds and a Maadi Cup
record for Cashmere High
• By Sam Coughlan
CASHMERE HIGH School
confirmed their status as an
emerging rowing “powerhouse”
after their best-ever showing at
the Maadi Cup.
The school won four golds at
the secondary school national
championships on Lake
Ruataniwha in Twizel, including
their first ever in the top
under-18 age bracket – the girls
quad. They defended their titles
in the under-15 girls octuple and
under-16 girls quad.
The girls’ under-17 quad team
of Poppy Wyndham, Abbie
Higgins, Eleri Clare, Thea
Murdie and cox Hazel Bown
also broke the Maadi Cup record
for the fastest time in the race,
finishing in 7min 09.46sec.
Christchurch Girls’ High
took out the Levin Trophy after
winning the under-18 girls eight
race.
Rangi Ruru was the best
Canterbury school overall,
finishing second on the Star
Trophy table, two points behind
the most successful school in the
competition, Hamilton Boys’
High.
Cashmere rowing coordinator
Adrian Riepen said
the tournament provided some
special moments for the school’s
young rowing programme.
“It’s just a real mountaintop
moment.
“You don’t dream of it, but
when it becomes a reality, it’s
almost incomprehensible.
“I think it’s a nice, real tribute
and moment for the whole
community involved.”
Cashmere finished fourth in
the Star Trophy overall rankings,
and took out the president’s scull,
which is awarded to the best
sculling school.
Riepen said the school’s
reputation was enhanced at the
event.
“You listen to the commentary
of all the races and, over the
years, the superlatives of
Cashmere have kind of levelled
up as we’ve gone through.
“Last year it was ‘the sleeping
giant of secondary school
rowing’ and now they’ve chosen
to use the word ‘powerhouse’.
“I think that’s just so
complimentary because there’s
some amazing schools out there
winning the under-18 girls
coxless pair.
that have such a rich history in
the sport.”
Rangi rowing co-ordinator
Olivia Ling said she couldn’t be
happier with how it went.
“With a smaller team, we didn’t
think that we would be featuring
for the Star Trophy this year but
to be up there and only losing by
two points was something really,
really amazing.”
Rider nudges race record on way to victory
YOUNG CYCLING talent Nate
Pringle announced himself
on the big stage after winning
Golden Homes Le Race, getting
close to the course record.
The 20-year-old finished just
ahead of a chasing bunch to
win the 25th anniversary of the
100km classic from Christchurch
to Akaroa, one of the most
gruelling one-day races in the
country.
“We were riding in a group
of about eight and I made my
move on the final climb, because
the last thing I wanted to do
was a bunch sprint,” said the
young Christchurch rider, after
recording 2hr 32min and 43
seconds, two minutes behind
Michael Vick’s course record.
In the women’s race
experienced Australian elite
rider Matilda Raynolds was
visibly shocked to win the classic
race after a difficult start up the
first major climb.
“I am more a diesel so need a
bit of time to warm up, so that
first climb straight after the start
STAR: Nate Pringle crossing the line to win the 2024
Golden Homes Le Race.
was just horrific and I was slowly
dying on that first climb,” said
the 36-year-old.
“It just shows you to never give
up, even when you think all is
lost. I just stuck with it and to be
honest I am a bit shocked that I
ended up in front,” said Raynolds
who moved to Christchurch last
year.
Raynolds finished in 2hr
57min and 48min, nearly eight
minutes ahead of second placed
Annamarie Lipp and Emma
Grant.
Pringle had little time to enjoy
the views as a strong bunch of
eight were climbing up the last
steep parts on Summit Rd, after
missing his final water station.
“I was cramping all the way
over those last climbs, but
managed to squeeze out one
burst and managed to drop
the rest of the group,” he said,
thanking the rest of his Oxford
Edge team-mates so setting him
up well for the final jump to the
finish line.
Pringle is still a relative novice
in cycling races, only switching
to a bike in 2019 after years of
rowing.
“I still have a lot to learn, so
in early May a few of us will be
heading over to Andorra to train
and do some racing in Belgium
to really learn how to race in a
big bunch.”
In Europe, he will be hoping
to emulate the feats of other
previous winners of Le Race
including world champions
and Commonwealth Games
medallists like Hayden Roulston,
Brian Fowler and Kate McIlroy.

ANOTHER WEEK, another
injury absence for the under-fire
Crusaders.
This time fill-in captain David
Havili will miss tomorrow
night’s clash with the Chiefs in
Christchurch. He is anticipated to
be fit after next week’s bye.
Havili limped off with a calf
injury last Saturday in the 26-6
loss to the Blues.
It was the Crusaders fifth
straight loss to open the Super
Rugby Pacific season – and has
them rooted to the bottom of
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
the ladder. Havili joins fellow
All Blacks Scott Barrett, Ethan
Blackadder and Will Jordan on
the sideline for the defending
champions.
Dallas McLeod has been named
to start in midfield and Mitch
Drummond will captain the side.
But there is some good news for
the Crusaders – first-five Rivez
Reihana has been deemed fit
enough to start on the bench after
copping a knock in round one
which has kept him out since.
Wing Johnny McNicholl (left)
starts in red-and-black for the
first time since leaving for Wales
in 2016. McNicholl will replace
Macca Springer on the left wing.
Springer will start off the bench.
The other changes see Quinten
Strange return to start at lock,
alongside promising youngster
Jamie Hannah.
Corey Kellow replaces Dominic
Gardiner at flanker, while hooker
James Mullen is poised to make
his debut off the bench.
•Kick-off at Apollo Projects
Stadium is at 7.05pm.
WORKSAFE NEW Zealand
has b en a proached in a bid to
fina ly repair the potholes in New
Brighton’s Hawke St car park.
Coastal-Burw od Ward city
counci lor David East wants
WorkSafe to pre sure the car
park’s private owners into
repairing the potholes which are
a “trip and vehicle” hazard.
WorkSafe chief inspector
a se sment southern Da ren
Handforth said it may be able to
take action under the Health and
Safety at Work Act 2015, “as a
person conducting a busine s or
undertaking.”
Mr Handforth said WorkSafe
is aware of the concerns raised by
Cr East abou the car park.
“WorkSafe has completed
an a se sment visi to the site
and is engaging with the owner
to advise them that it is their
responsibility to manage their
risks a propriately.”
Different parts of the car park
are owned by various people
and the Coastal-Burw od
Community Board recently
wrote to them about its concerns
around health and safety.
Cr East said the bi gest i sue
in the past has b en ge ting in
touch with the landlords and
owners and ge ting them to
agr e to anything. “The board
a preciates that multi-ownership
of the parking space may present
a difficulty in co-ordinating
repair/resurfacing but felt obliged
to pa s these concerns onto you,”
said the le ter.
One reply has b en received so
far from an owner who is wi ling
to discu s the i sue. However, a l
the owners would have to agr e
to undertake work.
Cr East said there had b en
a “number of incidences” in
the car park of people injuring
themselves which had gone
unreported.
“I’ve always though that it
has b en quite amazing that we
haven’t had any serious a cidents
or senior citizens perhaps
tri ping in those potholes and
doing themselve some damage.”
He is confiden the new
a proach wi l bring results.
“I think the WorkSafe
involvement may prove to be the
lever that we are l oking for.”
New bid to fix potholes
THE PAPANUI-I nes
Community Board has taken the
rare step of starting a petition
to figh the city council over
funding.
Signatures are being co lected
in a bid to get funding for a community
facility in Shirley.
It comes after the city council
removed funding for the centre
pla ned for Shirley Rd, near the
intersection with Hi ls Rd. This
was the site of the former community
centre, which was badly
damaged in the February 2,
20 1, earthquake.
The removal o funding
prompted community board
chairwoman Ali Jones to threaten
to stand down, citing it as her “die
in the ditch” project.
Ms Jone said the board’s role
is to represen the community,
and by gathering signatures from
residents, it was fulfi ling that
role.
“One of the roles of a community
board is to represent and act
as advocate for the interests of its
community and this is what we
are doing. The LTP and a nual
plans are a l about lo bying the
Apartments’
sign-off
this week
• By Sarla Donovan
THE OWNERS of Sumner’s Cave
Rock Apartments ar expecting the
Earthquake Commi sion to sign-off
on a se tlement agr emen this w ek.
Body corporate chairman Mike
White said the group had gone
into mediation with IAG and EQC
on February 20, and signed off
on a deal with IAG on February
2 – coincidenta ly seven years
to the day after the February 2,
20 1, earthquake. However, they
are waiting for EQC to sign the
agr ement.
“Given that EQC actua ly drafted
the agr ement, there’ l be no
problem with them doing that.”
The apartment suffered damage
in the February and June, 20 1,
earthquakes and were demolished in
late 2012. In 2016, IAG’s offer of the
difference betw en indemnity value,
$10 mi lion, and the sum insured,
$16 mi lion, was rejected by the body
corporate.
The mediation agr ement
prevented Mr White from disclosing
the se tlement amount, but he said it
involved the two parties paying “a bit
more money than they’d wanted to
earlier.”
New World Fe ry Rd butcher
Jeremy Garth and his team, the
It was the firs time Mr Garth
The preparation for this year’s
Mr Garth, who has b en a
“Doing a l thi stuff and
back for you,” he said.
Mr Garth hopes to own a
A CRACKDOWN on mobile
be l oming.
However, the public has li tle
interest in having input into the
Only eight submi sions were
received for a potential bylaw
aimed at regulating commercial
activities in public places.
The district council wi l be
holding a hearing for the Public
Places Bylaw and Policy on Commercial
Activities and Events in
Public Places.
A hearing i scheduled to be
held on Thursday.
The bylaw comes as an increasing
number of mobile traders
are s eking to operate in Selwyn,
especia ly during the summer
months.
In the past year, the district
council has received five inquiries
about se ting up a mobile busine s
on private or public land.
A report said there are two
str et operators in Darfield, a
coff e cart is parked beside the
railway in Ro leston, and a pi za
cart visits Lincoln w ekly betw en
GR ENDALE SCHOOL pupils
The New Zealand Mounted
Mark A pleton and member
Mike Donaldson t ok their
in a bid to educate pupils on the
sacrifice their ancestors made in
World War 1 and World War 2.
Mr A pleton and Mr Donaldson
a rived a the sch ol dre sed
their horses Tommy and Kruze
The presentation is a prelude
to the Gr endale Recreation Reserve
Management Commi t e’s
upcoming Anzac Day service.
As a tribute to those who
served, members of the trust wi l
ride horseback to the service.
Mr A pleton said it was
important children were
educated on what soldiers
wen through during World
War 1 and World War 2.
But he said the presentation
didn’t go into t o much detail
and was more of a “show and
the soldiers l oked like.
Children were shown the type
of kits horses were required to
AN U PER Ri carton butcher
has proven himself to be a cut
above his Au sie rivals at an
international competition.
Elite Meats owner Corey
Winder was named in the a l
star team a the World Butchers’
Cha lenge in Northern Ireland.
Mr Winder and his team, the
Pure South Sharp Blacks, which
includes W olston butcher
Jeremy Garth, finished second
in the competition.
He said the cha lenge started
as a “transtasman test match”
seven years ago.
The preparation for this
year’s World Butchers’ Challenge
was intense as the team
members met in Auckland
every two months for lengthy
w ekend practices. Mr Winder
said coming second against 1
other countries was a “fantastic”
result.
“To get second behind Ireland
was a huge achievement and to
be ahead of Australia is an
even bi ger thing for us,” he
said.
But Mr Winder admires the
Australian team.
“Those guys over there
[Australia] are on top of their
game, they do a g od job,” he
said.
“And it just showcases that
New Zealand has got some
of the best butchers in the
world,” he said.
Mr Winder has b en a butcher
since the age of 19.
Board chairman Mike Mora
told Western News the submi sion
“You can just about guarant e
Mr Mora said he wasn’t sure if
the city council would endorse the
“I’d like to think so because the
Christchurch’s best read and largest circulating newspaper
92yo Ailsa’s motto:
‘Use it or lose it’
• By Sasha Watson
EXTENSIVE TRAINING was
a key factor in Ailsa Newton’s
walk of 8480 steps in the Les
Mills City2Sur fun run.
Not bad for a 92-year-old.
Ailsa completed the 6.5km
distance from Porritt Park to
Rawhiti Domain in one hour
and 43 minutes.
“The event was very good
and very well organised. It was
a relief to finish and I was very
glad to sit down.
“I am quite proud of myself
Residents
call on
police,
patrollers
to do more
about crime
• By Sasha Watson
CAR THEFTS, home burglaries
and other petty crimes have
forced Avonhead and Russley
residents to ask for more action
from police and the community
patrol.
However, Christchurch North
Community Patrol president
say, use it or lose it. I must say
thank you to all who supported
me.”
Ailsa, a resident a the
Archer Retirement Village and
Rest Home in Beckenham,
said having its staff organise
the walk helped push her to
complete it.
She was joined by her son
Brian McCracken and fellow
residents, the home’s general
manager Jane Haughey and site
needs more volunteers to monitor
the behaviour.
“We have
about 30 regular
patrollers, but
each is only
required to do
one patrol per
month.
“If we had
more volunteers,
we could get
more patrols running.
Mary
Chappell
The ex-Brookhaven resident
had persevered with extensive
training for six weeks by
walking daily.
called out mostly to residential
incidents.
Chappell said the patrollers
continue to talk to businesses in
surpassed her 6km milestone
them on “what’s going on”.
STEADY PACE: Ailsa Newton managed to cover 8480 steps in the Les Mills City2Surf
fun run. She was supported by her son Brian McCracken, as well as fellow residents
and staff from Archer Retirement Village and Rest Home.
“The crimes are worse in some
areas and often, when crime
dies in one spot, it increases in
another,” Chappell said.
“Break-ins to cars are difficul to
catch as they happen in the early
morning.”
