EXTENSIVE TRAINING was 

a key factor in Ailsa Newton’s 

walk of 8480 steps in the Les 

Mills City2Surf fun run. 

Not bad for a 92-year-old. 

Ailsa completed the 6.5km 

distance from Porritt Park to 

Rawhiti Domain in one hour 

and 43 minutes. 

“The event was very good 

and very well organised. It was 

a relief to finish and I was very 

glad to sit down. 

“I am quite proud of myself 

for having done it. As people 

say, use it or lose it. I must say 

thank you to all who supported 

me.” 

Ailsa, a resident at the 

Archer Retirement Village and 

Rest Home in Beckenham, 

said having its staff organise 

the walk helped push her to 

complete it. 

She was joined by her son 

Brian McCracken and fellow 

residents, the home’s general 

manager Jane Haughey and site 

manager Philip Hanson. 

The ex-Brookhaven resident 

had persevered with extensive 

training for six weeks by 

walking daily. 

On the event day, she 

surpassed her 6km milestone 

which she had achieved the 

week before.

CAR THEFTS, home burglaries 

and other petty crimes have 

forced Avonhead and Russley 

residents to ask for more action 

from police and the community 

patrol. 

However, Christchurch North 

Community Patrol president 

Mary Chappell said the patrol 

needs more volunteers to monitor 

the behaviour. 

“We have 

about 30 regular 

patrollers, but 

each is only 

required to do 

one patrol per 

month. 

“If we had 

more volunteers, 

we could get

“Crime is constant. We get 

called out mostly to residential 

incidents. 

Chappell said the patrollers 

continue to talk to businesses in 

their area about crime and update 

them on “what’s going on”. 

“The crimes are worse in some 

areas and often, when crime 

dies in one spot, it increases in 

another,” Chappell said. 

“Break-ins to cars are difficult to 

catch as they happen in the early 

morning.”

some advice to give back to the

“(Todd’s) response was there 

had been an increase from March 

to November last year but it has 

dropped back to a more normal 

amount, following historical 

trends,” MacDonald said. 

“The good thing is the police 

are aware and are continuing to 

monitor the area. 

“They have a focus on particular 

measures for youth crime. 

“But the best and biggest thing 

the community can do is to make 

sure everyone is reporting every 

crime. 

“This helps the police with the 

numbers and where to put resources.

Plan to help 

disabled 

people take 

up sailing

A NEW charity helping 

disabled people to sail is 

hoping to be fully operational 

by spring. 

The SailAbility Canterbury 

Charitable Trust held a sailing 

fundraiser, which served as a 

test drive for their proposed 

service. 

“We want to support as 

many people as possible to get 

into sailing,” said trustee Ben 

Acland. 

“We know currently there 

is no way to get people with 

physical disabilities, like 

paraplegics, into the boats.” 

The future sailing 

programme would involve 

volunteers of varying 

experience who would assist 

and teach interested disabled 

people to sail small boats. 

It will be run out of the 

Naval Point Club in Lyttelton.

steam tug’s sailing days could 

be over if it does not find 

about $300,000 needed for a 

refit. 

The 116-year-old tug has been 

out of commission since August, 

when the vessel’s boilers failed a 

safety inspection. 

“At the end of the day, if we 

don’t get the funding it will 

be the end of the tug,” said 

preservation society president 

Mike Bruce. 

The refit plan is on hold until 

at least $70,000 is raised, which 

will allow work 

to begin. 

The society 

has $30,000 

in the bank, 

and $70,000 

guaranteed 

from various 

organisations 

if it reaches 

a $190,000 

threshold. To

“We all believe we’re going to 

have a breakthrough moment.” 

The society is hopeful the tug 

will receive the necessary funding 

and refit within a year. 

A givealittle page has been set 

up to help crowdfund, but this 

has only brought in small sums 

to date. 

Bruce said the tug will need 

much larger grants to achieve its 

funding goal. 

Despite the challenges, it could 

be years until the society calls it 

quits on the tug as long as members 

stay passionate and keep up 

basic maintenance, said Bruce. 

The preservation society’s 

trained volunteers maintain the 

tug at weekly sessions, which 

Bruce said have a “phenomenal 

turnout”. 

The $300,000 refit is only the 

start of a long-term plan for a 

$1.5 million modernisation of the 

vessel. 

This would include a new 

rear canopy, visual aids and 

information for tour guests, and 

an interior renovation to make the 

tug more attractive for visitors. 


Lyttelton’s 

THE LYTTELTON steam 

tug has a 116-year-long 

history. 

Built in 1907 by the 

Ferguson Brothers firm in 

Glasgow, it came to Lyttelton 

via the newly completed Suez 

Canal. It served as the port’s 

main tug until World War 2. 

Initially called Canterbury, 

its name was changed to 

Lyttelton in 1911. 

The vessel drew massive 

crowds in 1913 when it 

tugged the battlecruiser HMS 

New Zealand into harbour, 

and again in 1920 when it 

assisted the battlecruiser 

HMS Renown, which was 

carrying King Edward VIII 

when he was Prince of Wales 

during his tour of New 

Zealand. 

In 1942, the tug was requisitioned 

for service and 

armed by the Royal New 

Zealand Navy. 

She returned to normal 

port service in 1944. 

Following the introduction 

of the new tug Canterbury, 

the tug was retired in 1971. 

A museum ship ever 

since, it was leased for $2 

a year to the Tug Lyttelton 

Preservation Society. In 1989, 

the society was gifted full 

ownership of the tug by the 

Lyttelton Harbour Board. 

It has maintained it up to 

present day, moored at Z 

wharf.

never do it again. 

“But, I am looking at taking on a 5km 

Pink Ribbon walk in October. I’m resting for 

now, so we will see . . . I’ll be a bit older by 

then,” she said. 

Having been a keen walker for many years, 

Ailsa was once a part of the WEA Trampers 

and the Cashmere Athletic walking group. 

“I started walking when I was one year old 

. . . but I joined my groups a long time ago 

so I’ve been actively walking for about 75 

years.” 

She continues to walk 1.5km four days 

a week and takes part in the rest home’s 

activities programme. 

A gathering took place at the home on 

Tuesday to celebrate the achievement of the 

three walkers and the village team.

Cheers to the bottomless brunch 

EASTER IS THE perfect 

time for brunch. With a long 

weekend and nowhere to go, 

what better way to pass the time 

than with a slow leisurely start 

to the day with friends and 

family. 

For those with a sweet tooth, 

how about a super-easy pancake 

recipe, packed with seeds, that 

you can serve straight from the 

pan with a side of berries and 

cocoa sauce. 

Then, to add a celebratory 

touch, serve with a bloody 

Mary, the ultimate brunch 

drink. 

Seeded baked pancake 

with berries and cocoa 

sauce 

Serves 4 

Pancake batter 

50g (generous 1/3 cup) plain, 

all-purpose flour 

3 Tbsp coconut flour 

1 tsp baking powder 

Pinch of salt 

150ml (2/3 cup) milk 

3 eggs, beaten 

4 Tbsp runny honey 

1 tsp vanilla extract 

5 Tbsp mixed seeds, such as 

linseeds/flaxseeds, chia seeds, 

sunflower seeds, poppy seeds 

2 Tbsp coconut oil 

Cocoa sauce 

4 Tbsp raw cocoa powder 

2½ Tbsp runny honey 

2½ Tbsp coconut oil, melted 

To serve 

150g (¾ cup) Greek yoghurt 

50g dried berries, such as goji, 

acai, cranberries etc 

100g mixed fresh berries such 

as blueberries, raspberries, red 

currants etc 

Icing/confectioners sugar, to dust 

23cm ovenproof frying pan/ 

skillet 

Method: 

• Preheat the oven to 200°C. 

• To make the pancakes, sift the 

plain/all-purpose flour, coconut 

flour, baking powder and salt 

into a mixing bowl. Combine the 

milk, eggs, honey and vanilla in 

a separate bowl and beat into the 

flours to make a smooth batter. 

Fold in the mixed seeds. 

• Heat the coconut oil in 

the ovenproof frying pan/ 

skillet until melted. Pour in the 

pancake batter and transfer to 

the preheated oven. Bake in the 

preheated oven for 15 minutes 

until the pancake is puffed up 

and golden. 

• Meanwhile, make the cocoa 

sauce. Place all the ingredients 

in a saucepan with 4 tablespoons 

water and heat gently, stirring, 

until smooth. Keep warm. 

• As soon as the pancake is 

cooked, remove it from the oven. 

Spoon the yoghurt into the centre 

and top with the dried and fresh 

berries. Drizzle over the cocoa 

sauce and serve at once, dusted 

with a little icing/confectioners’ 

sugar. 

Best ever Bloody Mary 

Serves 4 

400g cherry vine tomatoes 

olive oil, for drizzling 

500ml tomato juice 

2 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce 

2 Tbsp sriracha chilli sauce 

3cm piece of fresh horseradish, 

peeled and finely grated 

60ml freshly squeezed 

lime juice 

300ml vodka 

sea salt and freshly ground black 

pepper 

To garnish 

Celery stalks 

Chilli flakes 

Method: 

• Preheat the oven to 180°C. 

• Place the tomatoes on a 

baking sheet, drizzle with 

olive oil and season with salt 

and pepper. Roast for 15-20 

minutes, or until the skins 

begin to split. 

• Put the tomato juice and 

roast tomatoes in a food 

processor and blend until 

smooth. 

• Transfer to a large jug and 

stir in the Worcestershire sauce, 

sriracha chilli/chilli sauce and 

grated horseradish. Season with 

salt and pepper, cover with 

cling film and chill in the fridge 

for at least 30 minutes. 

• When ready to serve, add 

the lime juice and vodka and 

stir well. 

• Place a celery stalk in four 

highball glasses, half-fill each 

glass with ice and pour in the 

Bloody Mary mixture. Garnish 

each with a pinch of chilli flakes 

and enjoy!
