Friday rugby festival boon
for player participation
A NEW RUGBY festival is
changing the game for children like
Whitau School brothers Revival
and Amazing.
Revival (left), year 3, and
Amazing (right), year 6, took part
in Games of Ranginui, a Linwood
Rugby Club initiative for year 1-8
pupils from schools in the east.
The brothers are able to hone
their skills at the event with
support from their whānau.
Games are then held for all ages
in a festival-like atmosphere at
Linfield Park on Friday afternoons.
“I’ve been playing rugby since
last year, and my mum really enjoys
watching me play,“ said Revival.
He said getting to play alongside
his older brother was a highlight.
Amazing said he “wants to play
rugby like his dad”.
“He used to play rugby all the
time.”
The event allows families to
connect with other parents and
caregivers while watching their
children participate.
A successful one-off pilot
programme last year attracted
more than 250 children, but
feedback suggested it be held over
several weeks instead.
Said Linwood rugby development
officer Sam Jack: “We saw there was
a real need to run something over
a period of weeks, and something
that was accessible for families
in one place, at the same time, to
remove barriers.”
92yo Ailsa’s motto: ‘Use it or lose it’
• By Sasha Watson
EXTENSIVE TRAINING was
a key factor in Ailsa Newton’s
walk of 8480 steps in the Les
Mills City2Surf fun run.
Not bad for a 92-year-old.
Ailsa completed the 6.5km
distance from Porritt Park to
Rawhiti Domain in one hour
and 43 minutes.
“The event was very good
and very well organised. It was
a relief to finish and I was very
glad to sit down.
“I am quite proud of myself
for having done it. As people say,
use it or lose it. I must say thank
you to all who supported me.”
Ailsa, a resident at the Archer
Retirement Village and Rest
Home in Beckenham, said
having its staff organise the walk
helped push her to complete it.
She was joined by her son
Brian McCracken and fellow
residents, the home’s general
manager Jane Haughey and site
manager Philip Hanson.
The ex-Brookhaven resident
had persevered with extensive
training for six weeks by
walking daily.
On the event day, she
surpassed her 6km milestone
which she had achieved the week
before.
“I’m still asking myself why I
did it. I will never do it again.
“But, I am looking at taking
on a 5km Pink Ribbon walk in
CELEBRATED: Archer
Village’s acting activities
provider, Bridie O’Flaherty,
helped Ailsa Newton
prepare for the walk and
presented her with flowers
and a pair of socks.
October. I’m resting for now, so
we will see . . . I’ll be a bit older
by then,” she said.
Having been a keen walker
for many years, Ailsa was once a
part of the WEA Trampers and
the Cashmere Athletic walking
group.
“I started walking when I was
one year old . . . but I joined my
groups a long time ago so I’ve
been actively walking for about
75 years.”
She continues to walk 1.5km
four days a week and takes part
in the rest home’s activities
programme.
A gathering took place at the
home on Tuesday to celebrate
the achievement of the three
walkers and the village team.
STEADY PACE: Ailsa Newton managed to cover 8480 steps in the Les Mills City2Surf fun
run. She was supported by her son Brian McCracken, as well as fellow residents and staff
from Archer Retirement Village and Rest Home.
THE ICONIC Lyttelton
steam tug’s sailing days could
be over if it does not find
about $300,000 needed for a
refit.
The 116-year-old tug has been
out of commission since August,
when the vessel’s boilers failed a
safety inspection.
“At the end of the day, if we
don’t get the funding it will
be the end of the tug,” said
preservation society president
Mike Bruce.
The refit plan is on hold until
at least $70,000 is raised, which
will allow work
to begin.
The society
has $30,000
in the bank,
and $70,000
guaranteed
from various
organisations
if it reaches
a $190,000
threshold. To
Mike
Bruce
achieve that, it must first find
another $90,000.
“We’re really treading water
here until we get the funds,” said
Bruce.
Some of the larger costs are
replacing the steam tubes and
installing an electric pre-heater
for
the boiler.
The refit could give the tug
another 40 to 50 years of life,
said Bruce.
The society is finding it
difficult to get charitable or
corporate sponsors on board.
“You do get despondent with
End of the line
for historic
tug?
ALL ABOARD: The Lyttelton tug has been used for harbour cruises since it was retired
from service in 1971.
all the rejected letters,” Bruce
said.
“We really don’t want to
consider the fact we might not
get the funding,” said Bruce.
“We all believe we’re going to
have a breakthrough moment.”
The society is hopeful the tug
will receive the necessary funding
and refit within a year.
A givealittle page has been set
up to help crowdfund, but this
has only brought in small sums
to date.
Bruce said the tug will need
much larger grants to achieve its
funding goal.
Despite the challenges, it could
be years until the society calls it
quits on the tug as long as members
stay passionate and keep up
basic maintenance, said Bruce.
The preservation society’s
trained volunteers maintain the
tug at weekly sessions, which
Bruce said have a “phenomenal
turnout”.
The $300,000 refit is only the
start of a long-term plan for a
$1.5 million modernisation of the
vessel.
This would include a new
rear canopy, visual aids and
information for tour guests, and
an interior renovation to make the
tug more attractive for visitors.
Lyttelton’s
THE LYTTELTON steam
tug has a 116-year-long
history.
Built in 1907 by the
Ferguson Brothers firm in
Glasgow, it came to Lyttelton
via the newly completed Suez
Canal. It served as the port’s
main tug until World War 2.
Initially called Canterbury,
its name was changed to
Lyttelton in 1911.
The vessel drew massive
crowds in 1913 when it
tugged the battlecruiser HMS
New Zealand into harbour,
and again in 1920 when it
assisted the battlecruiser
HMS Renown, which was
carrying King Edward VIII
when he was Prince of Wales
during his tour of New
Zealand.
In 1942, the tug was requisitioned
for service and
armed by the Royal New
Zealand Navy.
She returned to normal
port service in 1944.
Following the introduction
of the new tug Canterbury,
the tug was retired in 1971.
A museum ship ever
since, it was leased for $2
a year to the Tug Lyttelton
Preservation Society. In 1989,
the society was gifted full
ownership of the tug by the
Lyttelton Harbour Board.
It has maintained it up to
present day, moored at Z
wharf.
attempts to increase participation in
was not working as the cost of travel, subs
Linwood instead decided to offer
ensure more children have access to the
benefits of sport.
In its first week, the festival attracted
