EXTENSIVE TRAINING was
a key factor in Ailsa Newton’s
walk of 8480 steps in the Les
Mills City2Surf fun run.
Not bad for a 92-year-old.
Ailsa completed the 6.5km
distance from Porritt Park to
Rawhiti Domain in one hour
and 43 minutes.
“The event was very good
and very well organised. It was
a relief to finish and I was very
glad to sit down.
“I am quite proud of myself
for having done it. As people
say, use it or lose it. I must say
thank you to all who supported
me.”
Ailsa, a resident at the
Archer Retirement Village and
Rest Home in Beckenham,
said having its staff organise
the walk helped push her to
complete it.
She was joined by her son
Brian McCracken and fellow
residents, the home’s general
manager Jane Haughey and site
manager Philip Hanson.
The ex-Brookhaven resident
had persevered with extensive
training for six weeks by
walking daily.
On the event day, she
surpassed her 6km milestone
which she had achieved the
week before.
‘Use it or lose it’
STEADY PACE: Ailsa Newton managed to cover 8480 steps in the Les Mills City2Surf
fun run. She was supported by her son Brian McCracken, as well as fellow residents
and staff from Archer Retirement Village and Rest Home.
Residents
call on
police,
patrollers
to do more
about crime
• By Sasha Watson
CAR THEFTS, home burglaries
and other petty crimes have
forced Avonhead and Russley
residents to ask for more action
from police and the community
patrol.
However, Christchurch North
Community Patrol president
Mary Chappell said the patrol
needs more volunteers to monitor
the behaviour.
“We have
about 30 regular
patrollers, but
each is only
required to do
one patrol per
month.
“If we had
more volunteers,
we could get
Mary
Chappell
more patrols running.
“Crime is constant. We get
called out mostly to residential
incidents.
Chappell said the patrollers
continue to talk to businesses in
their area about crime and update
them on “what’s going on”.
“The crimes are worse in some
areas and often, when crime
dies in one spot, it increases in
another,” Chappell said.
“Break-ins to cars are difficult to
catch as they happen in the early
morning.”
‘Thieves will get inside your
house even if you’re home’
•From page 1
“House break-ins can
happen anytime during the
day,” Chappell said.
“It’s spooky – thieves will
get inside your house even if
you’re home.”
The call for more action
comes after residents
approached Waimairi
Ward city councillor Sam
MacDonald to tell him
about their
experiences
with criminal
activity.
MacDonald
then got in
touch with
the patrol and
Sam
MacDonald
police.
He said
it was quite
concerning to
hear residents concerns and he
was taking them seriously.
“It’s not ideal for an area of
little crime.
“We have to do something.
We are working with the
relevant organisations to help.
They all do a great job.”
MacDonald sent an email
to Canterbury metro area
commander, Superintendent
Lane Todd, last week to ask
if there had been an increase
in crime in the area and get
some advice to give back to the
community.
“(Todd’s) response was
there had been an increase
from March to November last
year but it has dropped back
to a more normal amount,
following historical trends,”
MacDonald said.
“The good thing is the police
are aware and are continuing
to monitor the area.
“They have a focus on
particular measures for youth
crime.
“But the best and biggest
thing the community can do
is to make sure everyone is
reporting every crime.
“This helps the police with
the numbers and where to put
resources. I also encourage
anyone who can to join the
BROKEN: Residents
of car break-ins to the
community patrol.
“Some other suggestions is
to not leave any valuables in
your vehicles, and try not to
park on the street as much as
possible.”
MacDonald said he
will continue to monitor
community feedback on crime
in the area.
Based on what he receives,
he plans to host a public
meeting sometime after Easter
to discuss these issues and the
solutions.
Climbing into our Learning at the
Botanical Gardens
In week four we were lucky enough to head to the Botanical
Gardens to kick off our integrated learning about structures
which is our focus for the whole year. We started off with a fun
bus ride through town then grabbed a seat under some shady
trees to eat our morning kai. After eating we had so much fun
playing on the playground, learning to share the equipment.
We then set out on a really fun scavenger hunt around the
whole gardens, taking photos as we went. Some things were
particularly tricky to find and we had lots of fun climbing the
sculptures. We finished off the trip with a bite to eat, a play in
the “parkour tree” working on our climbing and balancing skills
and having fun exploring the parachute making up our own
games. Then headed back to school with tired eyes - I think we
all slept well that night.
Year 3 and 4’s visit to the
EcoDrop
In week 4 and 5, the Year 3 and 4 teams went on a field trip
to the EcoDrop transfer station in Bromley, as part of our
integrated topic focus on Structures. The students gained
an understanding of the waste hierarchy and effective
waste minimisation and management processes.
There was a strong focus on processing organic waste,
where they were introduced to several composting
methods.
The students learnt about the benefits of hot heap
composting and worm farming methods. We also explored
how to properly use the City Council green bins.
We got to visit the Transfer station floor,
where we caught a glimpse of the sheer
magnitude of items destined for landfill, some
of which could have been recycled or reused.
After learning what happens to the yellow bin
contents, the students put their understanding
to the test in a challenge to reduce, reuse and
recycle rather than dispose of items.
Year 4-8 Swim Fun Day @ Halswell Pool
Year 7&8 visit the
Christchurch City
Council
The Year 7&8 Hub students visited
the Christchurch City Council,
Te Pae and important structural sites
in the inner city. This was to aid the
students with hands-on experience
for this terms Integrated Learning.
The students had the opportunity
to experience what it is to be a
councillor for Christchurch by sitting
in the debating chamber and having
a mock debate.
They also met different individuals
that work for the Christchurch City
Council. The Graffiti Team, the Park
Rangers, The Youth Consulting Team
and more. Andrei Moore spent the
day with us.
Each year the Year 4-8 students and teachers head down to Halswell Pool for our annual Swim
Day. On the programme were width and length races where students could earn points for their
respective House.
This was followed by the House Challenges - organised and run by the 2024 House Leaders and
Yr 8 Senior leaders. The ‘Big Splash’ challenge, where students in each house try to do the biggest
splash, was won by Miro who earned 200 house points.
The second challenge was the ‘how quickly
can you get the objects out of the pool’
challenge. This was won by Miro house.
Following this students had a free swim and
cooled down with a refreshing ice block
At about 1:00pm the majority of students
returned to school whilst 110 students
remained, taking part in the school swim trials
- on offer, a chance to represent the school at
the upcoming SW zones swim meet.
It was a wonderful day, with warm weather and
a great friendly, encouraging spirit evident.

Every day the RSA supports veterans throughout New Zealand, and the
demand for our services has never been higher.
Since 1990 New Zealand has created over 30,000 veterans under the age of
50, and there are around 140,000 living veterans across New Zealand. The total
number of those eligible for our support is much higher as the RSA provides
support to all current and former serving members of New Zealand’s Armed
Forces and their families.
We require COLLECTORS for our poppy sites on this side of Christchurch City
Cheers to the bottomless brunch
EASTER IS THE perfect
time for brunch. With a long
weekend and nowhere to go,
what better way to pass the time
than with a slow leisurely start
to the day with friends and
family.
For those with a sweet tooth,
how about a super-easy pancake
recipe, packed with seeds, that
you can serve straight from the
pan with a side of berries and
cocoa sauce.
Then, to add a celebratory
touch, serve with a bloody
Mary, the ultimate brunch
drink.
Seeded baked pancake
with berries and cocoa
sauce
Serves 4
Pancake batter
50g (generous 1/3 cup) plain,
all-purpose flour
3 Tbsp coconut flour
1 tsp baking powder
Pinch of salt
150ml (2/3 cup) milk
3 eggs, beaten
4 Tbsp runny honey
1 tsp vanilla extract
5 Tbsp mixed seeds, such as
linseeds/flaxseeds, chia seeds,
sunflower seeds, poppy seeds
2 Tbsp coconut oil
Cocoa sauce
4 Tbsp raw cocoa powder
2½ Tbsp runny honey
2½ Tbsp coconut oil, melted
To serve
150g (¾ cup) Greek yoghurt
50g dried berries, such as goji,
acai, cranberries etc
100g mixed fresh berries such
as blueberries, raspberries, red
currants etc
Icing/confectioners sugar, to dust
23cm ovenproof frying pan/
skillet
Method:
• Preheat the oven to 200°C.
• To make the pancakes, sift the
plain/all-purpose flour, coconut
flour, baking powder and salt
into a mixing bowl. Combine the
milk, eggs, honey and vanilla in
a separate bowl and beat into the
flours to make a smooth batter.
Fold in the mixed seeds.
• Heat the coconut oil in
the ovenproof frying pan/
skillet until melted. Pour in the
pancake batter and transfer to
the preheated oven. Bake in the
preheated oven for 15 minutes
until the pancake is puffed up
and golden.
• Meanwhile, make the cocoa
sauce. Place all the ingredients
in a saucepan with 4 tablespoons
water and heat gently, stirring,
until smooth. Keep warm.
• As soon as the pancake is
cooked, remove it from the oven.
Spoon the yoghurt into the centre
and top with the dried and fresh
berries. Drizzle over the cocoa
sauce and serve at once, dusted
with a little icing/confectioners’
sugar.
Best ever Bloody Mary
Serves 4
400g cherry vine tomatoes
olive oil, for drizzling
500ml tomato juice
2 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
2 Tbsp sriracha chilli sauce
3cm piece of fresh horseradish,
peeled and finely grated
60ml freshly squeezed
lime juice
300ml vodka
sea salt and freshly ground black
pepper
To garnish
Celery stalks
Chilli flakes
Method:
• Preheat the oven to 180°C.
• Place the tomatoes on a
baking sheet, drizzle with
olive oil and season with salt
and pepper. Roast for 15-20
minutes, or until the skins
begin to split.
• Put the tomato juice and
roast tomatoes in a food
processor and blend until
smooth.
• Transfer to a large jug and
stir in the Worcestershire sauce,
sriracha chilli/chilli sauce and
grated horseradish. Season with
salt and pepper, cover with
cling film and chill in the fridge
for at least 30 minutes.
• When ready to serve, add
the lime juice and vodka and
stir well.
• Place a celery stalk in four
highball glasses, half-fill each
glass with ice and pour in the
Bloody Mary mixture. Garnish
each with a pinch of chilli flakes
and enjoy!
Hop on down to VALENTINES
this Easter Weekend
Hornby restaurant offers more choices and familiar favourites
Thousands of Christchurch families will
have fond memories of enjoying the tasty
food and friendly vibe of Valentines buffet
restaurant, which was located for many
years in the central city.
A New Zealand-wide franchise
operation, the business went through many
changes over the years, then with new
owners taking over the company six years
ago, it gained a new momentum.
A third franchise was set up in Auckland,
its Rotorua restaurant reopened, and in
July 2019, Valentines Christchurch opened
at a new location – Chalmers Street,
Hornby.
As company director Ron Lal explains,
Valentines has a rich history in Kiwi
culture and they wanted to retain that
feeling of nostalgia, but with some new
concepts added to the mix.
“We wanted to offer our customers a new
experience that’s up with the times, and
with a modern twist on hospitality.
“Customers have a lot more choice of
food now,” he says, “for example you can
choose your own meat, which will be
cooked individually for you. We offer a big
selection of dishes, seafood and desserts,
and of course there are the familiar
favourites that the children love, like the
chocolate fountain and an endless supply
of ice-cream.
“We want to wow the customers and
at the same time we want to create that
nostalgic Valentines feel.”
The Valentines tradition of a free meal
for a customer on their birthday has been
upgraded to a celebratory birthday treat
and, of course, with the famous birthday
song being sung by staff, too. Families are
also invited to take advantage of the school
holiday special from time to time. During
the holidays, one child under the age of
eight gets a free lunch if accompanied by a
full paying adult. (T’s & C’s apply.)
Valentines has always been seen as a
100 per cent family restaurant, a tradition
that the new Valentines team is keen to
continue, but Valentines is also a restaurant
for everyone, from families to couples,
to friends getting together to celebrate a
special occasion.
Situated in the heart of the Hornby
shopping precinct, not only is Valentines
the ideal place for people from the Hornby
community to enjoy tasty food and a
warm, friendly vibe, it also employs local
staff, who are treated well and therefore
enjoy working there and giving their
customers the best possible service.
Valentines is open seven days a week,
from 10am till late. Outside the buffet
times they also do the popular Valentines
Shareboxes, which offer a range of
amazing dishes.
Toyota’s peppy hybrid hatch the best Yaris yet
A GOOD EXAMPLE of SUVs
being hot and hatches not is the
Toyota Yaris a funky five-door
hatch, which hardly gets a sales
look-in against its slightly SUV
sibling the Yaris Cross that costs
almost $4k more.
The current Yaris is now
four years old, but considered
the biggest transformation in
decades of the dull, but utterly
dependable Yaris. Some even
described it as a quantum leap in
refinement and technology over
its predecessors.
The starting point for a Yaris is
$32,190 for the GX hybrid with a
big jump to $38,390 for the high
spec ZR hybrid provided for this
road test.
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
If you’re serious about
reducing you carbon footprint
by driving some something
clean and green, the distinctive
Yaris hybrid makes a compelling
case with super low CO2 engine
emission figure at just 76g/
km. The 1.5-litre three-cylinder
petrol electric hybrid system
has a combined power output of
85kW. Collectively this combo
does a fine job.
In urban motoring, the hybrid
has amazingly low engine noise
levels. You can almost hear a
pin drop in the cabin when it’s
running in electric-only mode
and it does this for extended
periods on reasonably flat
terrain.
Ratings out of 10: Performance 7; Handling 7; Build Quality
7; Comfort 7; Passenger and Load Space 6; Styling 7; Value
for money 6; Safety – Five Star ANCAP crash rating.
Overall points out of 10: 7
It switches seamlessly between
its double life of petrol and
electric and back again, a credit
to an advanced and effective
lithium-ion battery and electric
motor set-up.
I noticed the hybrid seemed
to work harder when faced with
energy draining hill climbs, and
isn’t as spritely at it during hill
free driving.
This compact five-door
hatch is happiest in the urban
motoring that it was designed
for. Going beyond the city limits
pushes it and the driver out of
their comfort zones. Longer open
road trips are doable and the test
car proved comfortable enough
on a 200km roadie. A direct, and
it is, shift CVT (continuously
variable transmission) is a
purpose built electronically
controlled gearbox, tuned for
the gear shifting efficiency
needed to deliver on its claimed
3.5L/100km fuel economy.
Quality and fashionable
materials are not what you
typically find in a mini hatch
for the masses such as the
Yaris, nor the climate control
air conditioning, smart entry
with push button start, digital
speedometer and head-up
display. If a roomy cabin and a
decent size rear hatch is on your
list then you won’t find it, instead
it’s a tight 4-seater for those who
don’t travel with a lot of luggage.
Connectivity is well sorted
on all fronts, with a multimedia
system incorporating a
7-inch touchscreen display,
full smartphone integration
including Apple CarPlay and
Android Auto.
Almost every element of
this vehicle is executed with
precision, but then that’s
something Toyota has always
done better than most.
This is the best riding and
handling Yaris yet. Balanced,
nimble, and with deep reserves
of grip on even the poorest
road surfaces, ensure an action
packed drive over twisty terrain.
The steering is engaging with
just the right amount of road feel
and weighting, to quickly gain
the confidence of the driver, and
it is so easy to limbo into and out
of the tightest parking spots.
