Each year more than 2,000 children take part in a variety of exciting physical and educational programs and workshops across our LGA. The programs offer a free, fun and safe way for kids to stay active and participate during their break. These school holidays once again offer the chance to ‘play the holidays away’ at Active Parramatta, with endless fun activities like NRL, netball, touch football, and pickleball. We aim to make our school holiday programs 100% accessible to children of all abilities. All programs are organised by trained facilitators who can deliver activities that respond to children with a range of needs. Registrations open at 7pm on Wednesday 10 April 2024. LOCAL NEWS 21 demountables to go as upgrades begin at local school ELLIE BUSBY The shovels are officially in the ground as work begins on the multi-million dollar upgrade of Darcy Road Public School. The Wentworthville school is now one step closer to replacing 21 demountables with permanent buildings and modern classrooms, with the NSW Government turning the first sod last week. Along with new classrooms, the project also plans to support the growing local community with a new library, canteen, administration facilities, a refurbished school hall, an extension of the school’s car park and an upgrade to core facilities. Landscaping, public domain and other ancillary works are also set to be delivered as part of the upgrade. Deputy Premier and Minister for Education and Early Learning Prue Car welcomed the commencement of the local school’s major overhaul. “I am delighted to see works begin here at Darcy Road Public School – where this school is set to receive a massive boost as we significantly upgrade their facilities,” she said. “Students here have been learning in demountable classrooms for years, and it is fantastic to see western Sydney children will Prue Car with Darcy Road Public School students and Principal Trudy Hopkins. Photo: Naomi Chilcott. soon be learning in permanent classrooms. “Our Government is committed to fighting for students across New South Wales, so every child in the state can access a high quality education.” This milestone in the project’s development makes it the 23rd major public education project started since NSW Labor first formed Government a year ago. The State Government has committed $769 million to build 100 new public preschools in areas “where they are needed most”. Other local schools where major works have begun in the last 12 months include Carlingford West Public School and Cumberland High School. NSW Premier Chris Minns said the NSW Government is committed to rebuilding the essential services and addressing the school infrastructure backlog. “This is why we are making a record investment for urgently needed new and upgraded schools across the state, including Darcy Road,” he said. Photo: Naomi Chilcott. “This targeted investment in growing communities will ensure every student in NSW has access to a world class public education, no matter where they live.” A temporary school opened at the end of last year to support Darcy Road students throughout the upgrade. Early pre-construction works have been underway at the site ahead of the start of main construction works. The upgrades are expected to all be complete by the end of 2025.
