The OP Print Program (OP Editions) was organized by Ka-sing
and Holly in the nineties as a sideline to the renowned photography
publication DISLOCATION.
The goal was to compile a body of work through original photographs
in a portable format (8x10 inches) that reflects the photography scene
of Hong Kong during that period. The project began in 1995 and
concluded in 1999, two years after they relocated to Canada. Both
Ka-sing and Holly were in charge of curating the project, selecting
works from monographs or exhibitions that include some of the most
representative pieces from artists, encompassing the contemporary,
old generation masters, and foreign photographers based in Hong
Kong during that time.
Approximately 200 individual works were issued. In the print
program, 20 limited editions were produced and signed by the
artists. Black and white works are fiber-based gelatin silver prints,
while colour works consist of Cibachrome photographs or
chromogenic prints.
Some works in the program have already sold out. Ka-sing and Holly
are currently working on organizing these into five large volumes of
original photographs as Institution Collections for public galleries.
They are also in the process of creating a book that features the
complete body of work.
10 works from
OP Editions in the
second season of
1997.
We consider it a cross-section of Hong Kong’s photography history
in the nineties, which is an important period when Hong Kong
photography was heading towards the contemporary era.

After Time
A timeless
timepiece,
a celestial body
suspended in space –
its creator’s hand
but a gentle nudge.
To apprehend the concept
of its time versus our time,
its two hands indicate
it’s four forty,
while our digital display
shows it’s three fifteen.
It doesn’t care;
it likes to hang in there
in massive darkness,
the Big Void expanding,
yearning and yawning
between reason and purpose.
Four kaput clocks,
each with its own mind:
the space clock reads eight twenty-five,
the Ikea clock forever eleven twenty,
while the Wehrle clock freezes at four,
Shanghai Tan perpetuity at twelve forty-three.
Red, Green, Blue
In his day, my partner was an accomplished photographer and a skilled printer. Black and white
enlargements were the product of much intricate burning and dodging. And he was good at sculpting
with light exposure to differentiate sky from cloud, water from rock, tree from field. A scene emerging
on paper as the merest outline would deepen into a fully realized composition.
Colour printing was his bread and butter, and the key to success was nailing “true” skin tone, or
convincing product and logo colour. There was no such thing as “correct”; the successful picture
depended on shameless manipulation of blue/ red/ green. Like working with a secret colour palette.
Not surprisingly, when the photography chapter ended, he happily turned to painting. Landscapes
ruled: shorelines with giant rocks; fields with wind-swept trees and parading clouds. When the
rock shapes became faces, another pet activity/obsession kicked in: collecting rocks, which in turn
became faces. The collection flourished.
Interest shifted from paint to markers, pencils, any shiny objects at hand, all of which came together
on multi-media paper, sometimes prompted by my drawing a scene like a forest or shoreline featuring
various creatures: from vultures, to bears, fox, deer, seal, to walrus, killer whales, a human or two and
even oni, those goofy Japanese ogres. If the drawing appealed, he would get going with pencils.

India (December, 2016) – I recognize the
concept of street festivals happening outside
one’s habitation. However neighbourhood
mela’s in Kolkata take on a new meaning of
crowded, the noise almost hypnotic, but also
tantalizing and enchanting. It felt almost
overnight the tranquil family abode and
surrounding neighbourhood turned into a
circus performance. The small congested
laneways lined on both sides with vendors
hawking anything you could possibly need.
Just as fast as the fair appeared, it vanished
without much trace, leaving behind the same
tranquil space of the very nostalgic past.
