Young recruits get
pass for fire callouts
• By Dylan Smits
WHEN MAX Sharpe and
Tai Bristowe bolt from the
classroom, they’re not skipping
school.
The friends are newly qualified
firefighters at the Akaroa
Volunteer Fire Brigade – part of
a wave of new members.
“It’s always thrilling
knowing that could happen at
any moment, that you could
get called to go help out the
community,” said Max.
The 17-year-olds attend
Akaroa Area School, just down
the street from the fire station.
They have the support of their
teachers and fellow students, especially
when the siren sounds.
“They love it. The whole school
is like ‘run, run, run’,” said Max.
He and Tai have made a
special arrangement with the
school so they can go on callouts
without signing out.
Completing the volunteer
recruit course has brought
the friends closer, after Tai
encouraged Max to join the
brigade with him.
Dolphin,
whale trust
declined
funds from
SailGP
• By Niva Chittock
A MARINE conservation
academic says the New Zealand
Whale and Dolphin Trust turned
down funding for a project from
SailGP due to concerns about its
behaviour during racing.
The future
of SailGP in
Lyttelton Harbour
next year
is also in doubt
after endangered
Hector’s dolphins
cancelled a day of
racing over the
weekend.
SailGP chief
Russell
Coutts
executive Sir Russell Coutts had
come out firing since, saying there
was too much red tape and racing
did not need to be halted.
He claimed Hector’s dolphins
were not endangered and a
statement from Otago University
professor Liz Slooten saying as
such was a “lie”.
Hector’s dolphins are listed
as threatened – nationally
vulnerable.
Sign of Kiwi more
THE OWNER of the Sign of the
Kiwi cafe says it has emerged
from the Port Hills fire more
resilient.
The cafe overlooks the city
from Summit Rd and was closed
during the large Valentine’s Day
fire, which broke out in the valley
below and covered 650 ha.
Owner Eric Devos said the cafe
has survived two major fires now
and he was looking forward to
welcoming more customers with
a new car park.
“The fire was a bit further than
it was in 2017 (but) you’re always
worried you know, I mean we
had no power for a couple of
days. We had to close for a couple
of days but in the bigger scheme,
it’s nothing,” he said.
Devos said the new car park
would double its parking capacity
and help reduce congestion
around the difficult hill intersection
the cafe sits above.
For years the cafe has only had
11 parks, despite drawing up to
there is a lot of car movement
Pest trapping
groups skill up
ASPIRING PEST trappers are
learning the tips and tricks of
the trade as part of the Whaka-
Ora Pest Project.
Co-ordinator Katie Dunlop
says the programme is creating
trapping groups for target
areas around Lyttelton
Harbour.
Thirteen volunteers from
Diamond Harbour attended a
session hosted by Dunlop last
week.
They learned the basics of
how to operate traps and key
information on lure and trap
placement.
“Have a nice level platform
that doesn’t have too much
foliage around so a pest can see
right through the trap. If it looks
more like a tunnel than a cave,
they’ll be more likely to think
they have a way out,” she said.
Another tip is changing the
location of traps if volunteers are
not catching pests.
The programme has trapped
about 450 pests since it started
in December.
Three types of traps are
utlised, suited to different types
of pests.
Volunteers are taught how to
handle the trap mechanisms,
which can be dangerous if used
improperly.
“We encourage people to
go out with their kids so they
can learn, but generally we
want adults checking the traps
because they are a little bit
dangerous in terms of setting
them up,” Dunlop said.
Akaroa pump station
set to start in late 2025
CONSTRUCTION of the new wastewater
pump station in Akaroa is likely to start at
the end of 2025.
The city council has put a notice up
at the Children’s Bay boat park asking
owners of any boats, trailers or other
equipment stored in the area marked on
a map to move them out of the way by the
end of June.
Then geotechnical investigations at the
boat park will inform the design of the
new pump station at the site.
City council head of three waters Brent
Smith said the pump station is an essential
aspect of the new Akaroa wastewater
scheme.
The $74 million wastewater scheme
involves building a new treatment plant on
Old Coach Rd and a new pump station at
the boat park.
Akaroa’s network of pipes will be
upgraded and treated recycled wastewater
will be used to irrigate new plantings
of native trees at Hammond Point and
Robinsons Bay.
Smith said consents are approved for
many aspects of the scheme, including
building the pump station.
The city council has submitted
a resource consent application to
Environment Canterbury for the irrigation
of treated wastewater to land.
“Although we’re waiting on resource
consent for that final part of the
scheme, we have to get started on
the other work, the pump station
and the treatment plant, because our
consent to discharge treated wastewater
to Akaroa Harbour will expire in May
Stray cat saviours seeking permanent home
• By Dylan Smits
DEDICATED residents are
rescuing and rehoming dozens
of stray cats in Diamond
Harbour.
The volunteers have rescued
about 60 cats over the past two
years and now they are looking
to expand their group.
“It’s looking at environmental
work in a different way,” said
volunteer Dawn Sutton. “This is
our way of making sure the cats
are being looked after, because
it’s not the cat’s fault that they’ve
been dumped.”
Rescuing stray cats is the
priority, but the volunteers also
hope to prevent predation on
native birds.
“Anecdotally we’ve noticed
that especially around the
Stoddart Point area. After
we’ve done all that work, there
seems to be an increased bird
population around there.”
Sutton said there are two
main theories why there is a
disproportionate amount of
stray cats in the area.
“One is that people are coming
and dumping their cats out
here thinking there’s plenty of
vermin to eat and they’ll be ok.”
The other theory suggests
some renters or bach owners in
the area have abandoned their
cats after moving away.
The Diamond Harbour and
Surrounds Rescue Group
relaunched in December after
a hiatus due to most stray cats
being rehomed.
“Now there’s been grumblings
about people seeing cats again.
We’ve got traps out at two sites
at the moment, so it’s just a
matter of waiting.”
Humane trap boxes are used
RESCUED: Liz Fisher, top left, Rob Fisher
and Jane Hardcastle are part of the
Diamond Harbour and Surrounds Rescue
Group which has rescued about 60 stray
cats over the past two years.
by the group to lure in stray cats.
Desexing and socialising the
cats before rehoming is the main
function of the group.
“We’ve had amazing donations
from the community where
people go pop money in at the
vet so we can provide initial
treatments.”
Most of the rescued cats have
been socialised at members’
properties before being rehomed.
Realising the need for cat
rescues is not going away, the
group are looking for a building
where they can establish a wellstaffed
permanent charity.
“It will allow people to help out
with the cat rescue, but not upset
their own homes with bringing
in stray kittens.”
In the past two weeks, two
young cats believed to be related,
McKenzie and Ghana have been
rescued and fostered with a
family until a permanent home
is found.
“It does take time to foster a
feral cat, because they need that
time spent with them to socialise
them. It can be quite process.”
The group are looking for
more volunteers to help with
monitoring the traps and
donations to fund desexing,
healthcare and basic necessities
for rescued cats.
Adopting the cats costs a fee
which goes towards further care
for other rescues.
• The bank account
number for donations to
the group is 01-0867-
“We’ve definitely been able to
hang out a lot at trainings and
stuff which is cool,” said Tai.
“It’s been fun, but it’s a bit
challenging at times.”
Max’s father Andrew also
completed the course with the
two young recruits.
He was a member of the West
Melton Volunteer Fire Brigade
until 2007, but had to retrain.
“We enjoyed the course
together. I gave Max his space
and he gave me my space, but it’s
great to be able to do it with your
son,” Andrew said.
The firefighters have training
two evenings a week.
“You do have to have good
time management with
homework and stuff. Lots of
learning how to do more things
in your own time,” said Max.
So far he has been called out
on two minor incidents, but he
expects to attend more involved
and risky situations soon.
“It’s part of the duty of being
a volunteer firefighter. Most of
who else is going to do it for the
exciting and nerve-wracking.
“Definitely a bit scary to think
about, but it’s just part of the job,
really.”
The Akaroa brigade is now
well staffed with five new
qualified firefighters, bringing
the total up to 30.
Chief fire officer Mark
Thomson said the increased
number takes some pressure off
the volunteers.
“Two of them are still at the
school, only 200 metres away
from the fire brigade, and
they’re there during the day. It’s
GEARING
UP: Volunteer
firefighters
Tai Bristowe,
Max Sharpe
and Andrew
Sharpe.
a huge benefit.”
The new recruits trained at the
Woolston Fire Training Centre,
learning how to use breathing
apparatus, conduct search and
rescue, and tackle urban fire
environments.
Max and Tai have felt at home
as part of the brigade team,
despite being too young to drink
at the station’s bar.
Going forward, Max is likely
to take a gap year before leaving
Akaroa to study economics.
“Wherever I go, there will
always be a volunteer fire brigade
looking for new additions.”
Dawson was unimpressed
by Sir Russell’s comments.
“Sir Russell is one of the
world’s great sailors but
he’s not a dolphin expert.
It’s the International
Union for Conservation of
Nature that considers the
species to be endangered
and they are the principal international
body that evaluates the
threat status of our animals and
plants worldwide,” he said.
Dawson had been one of the
advisers on SailGP’s Marine
Mammal Management Plan.
Under New Zealand law, no
vessel could go faster than five
knots when it was within 300
metres of any marine mammal,
he said, and that would be the
case wherever SailGP was held.
“It was a courageous move on
the sailing co-ordinator to cancel
the sailing on Saturday, and I
applaud that. It was the right
Steve
Dawson
decision,” he said.
Dawson said he was also a
part of the New Zealand Whale
and Dolphin Trust, which had
turned down SailGP funding for
a conservation project because of
greenwashing concerns.
“We ended up declining
that funding on the
basis that we didn’t feel
that their behaviour over
last year’s racing was adequate
in relation to this
endangered species.
“I don’t want to take
money from any activity
that potentially posed
harm to the animals that
I’m studying. I think that’s inappropriate,”
Dawson said.
His view remained the same
now, he said, and added he would
not accept funding from the
fishing industry, either
Longboarder stoked for Single Fin festivities
• By Dylan Smits
STAR SUMNER surfer Jack
Tyro is set to make waves at the
Single Fin Mingle as the festival
and surf competition celebrates
its tenth anniversary.
“It’s so much fun. Every night
there’s always something on,”
the 17-year-old said. “It’s a real
social thing. It’s not so much
the competition, but more
Fresh from winning
the top title at the Noosa
optimistic about his prospects.
“As long as I surf the best I
possibly can, I’m happy. I don’t
go into these things worrying
about who’s in it or where
they’re coming from.”
Starting tomorrow, the Single
with three action-packed days
of surfing, music and festivities.
Sumner village will welcome
more than 50 of the world’s
best longboarders for what
organisers hope will be an epic
Tyro will have stiff
competition from world no 12,
Kai Ellice-Flint from Byron
The Wizard of the Kremlin
By Giuliano da Empoli
An acclaimed, bestselling novel - a stunning work of political fiction that
reads like a thriller, about the rise to power of Putin’s notorious spin doctor.
They call him the Wizard of the Kremlin. Working at the heart of Russian
power, the enigmatic Vadim Baranov - Putin’s chief spin doctor - has used his
background in experimental theatre and reality TV to turn the entire country
into an avant-garde political stage. Here truth and lies, news and propaganda,
have become indistinguishable. But Vadim is growing increasingly entangled
in the dark secret workings of the regime he has helped build, and now he is
desperate to get out... Propelling the reader from the fall of the Soviet Union
to the invasion of Ukraine, this breathless story of politics and power has
become an international sensation.
The Call
By Gavin Strawhan
After surviving a brutal attack, Auckland cop DS Honey Chalmers has returned
to her hometown to care for her mother. The remote coastal settlement of
He Kino holds complicated memories for Honey, not least the tragic suicide
of her younger sister, Scarlett. And Honey’s relationship with her formidable
mother is fraught to say the least. Honey is hardest on herself regarding the
attack that nearly killed her. She let herself get too close to a Reapers gang
informant. She got sloppy. And she’s pretty sure the informant, mother-ofthree
Kloe Kovich, paid the price. But when a couple of gang heavies turn up
in He Kino, Honey realises they are hoping she will lead them to Kloe. This
means that Kloe is alive and on the run after all.
The Last Word By Elly Griffiths
A cosy, twisty mystery that reintroduces the glorious characters Natalka and
Edwin, whom we met in The Postscript Murders, are running a detective agency in
Shoreham, Sussex. Despite a steady stream of minor cases, Natalka is frustrated,
longing for a big juicy case such as murder to come the agency’s way. Natalka is
now living with dreamer, Benedict. But her Ukrainian mother Valentyna has joined
them from her war-torn country and three’s a crowd. It’s annoying to have Valentyna
in the tiny flat, cooking borscht and cleaning things that are already clean. To add
to Natalka’s irritation, Benedict and her mother get on brilliantly. Then a murder
case turns up. Local writer, Melody Chambers, is found dead and her family are
convinced it is murder. Edwin, a big fan of the obit pages, thinks there’s a link to the
writer of Melody’s obituary who pre-deceased his subject. The trail leads Benedict
and Edwin to a slightly sinister writers’ retreat. When another writer is found dead,
Edwin thinks that the clue lies in the words. Seeking professional help, the amateur
investigators turn to their friend, detective Harbinder Kaur, to find that they have
stumbled on a plot that is stranger than fiction.
Sunflower Sisters By Martha Hall Kelly
Inspired by true accounts, Sunflower Sisters provides a vivid look at the Civil War
experience, from the barbaric and inhumane plantations, to a war-torn New
York City to the horrors of the battlefield. From the author of the million-copy
global bestseller Lilac Girls, comes a captivating new historical novel, set during
the American Civil War. Georgeanne Woolsey isn’t meant for the world of lavish
parties and demure attitudes. So when civil war ignites the nation, she follows
her passion for nursing during a time when doctors considered women a bother
on the battlefront. She and her sister Eliza venture from New York to Washington,
D.C. to Gettysburg, and while involved in the war effort witness firsthand the
unparalleled horrors of slavery. In the South, Jemma and her sister, Patience
are enslaved. Both live in fear of LeBaron, an abusive overseer who tracks their
every move. When Jemma is sold by the cruel Anne-May just as the Union Army
comes through, she sees a chance to escape. Anne-May is forced to run the Peeler
Plantation when her husband joins the Union Army and her brother enlists with
the Confederates. Now in charge, she uses the opportunity to follow her own
ambitions and is drawn into a secret Southern network of spies.
Puzzle Books
Pheasants Nest By Louise Milligan
She wonders if they have discovered she is missing yet? Has it broken as a story?
Who has been assigned to cover it? Have they started spooling through her social
media to pull out photographs? Constructing a narrative about who she is and
what possible reason any person might have to kidnap or (let’s be frank) kill her?
She tries not to let out the whimper that is building in her sternum, at the thought
that he might. Kill her, that is. He might kill her. Kate Delaney has made the
biggest mistake of her life. On a girls’ night out, she picked the wrong sleazy guy to
publicly humiliate in a bar and now she is living every woman’s worst nightmare.
She finds herself brutalised, bound and gagged in the back of a car being driven
god knows where by a man whose name she doesn’t know, and petrified about
what is in store for her. As a journalist who is haunted by the crimes she’s had to
report over her career, Kate is terrifyingly familiar with the statistics of women
who go missing - and the fear and trauma behind the headlines. She knows only
too well how those stories usually end. Acclaimed and award-winning writer and
journalist Louise Milligan has written a stunning and surprising thriller with a
gigantic heart: a gripping, propulsive and brilliantly original debut.
Branching Out: Your Essential
Guide to DIY Tree Inspection
Inspecting trees on your property is crucial for maintaining safe and
healthy trees. Here are the top 5 things to look for.
1. Structural Integrity
· Cracks or splits in the trunk or major branches
· Leaning or unusual tilting of the trunk.
· Missing or delaminating bark.
· Branches crossing or rubbing against each
other.
· Sections of the canopy with no leaves or
uneven density.
· Deep cavities or unhealed wounds.
· Multi-stemmed trees may crack and split
where they connect especially if the stems
are about the same diameter and emerge
from the same location. Strong connections
appear as a ‘U’ shape, weak connections
resemble a tight ‘V’ shape.
· Visible insects on the leaves, bark and
pruning wounds. Sawdust-like material
at the base of the tree can indicate woodboring
insects that weaken the tree.
4. Proximity to Structures or
Utilities
· Consider proximity to various structures
and utilities such as footpaths, driveways,
buildings, houses, garages, sheds, roof and
gutter lines, boundary fences, power lines,
poles, and lighting.
· Positioned too closely, trees can obstruct
sunlight, views, and cause blockages during
leaf fall and cause damage from falling
branches or tree failure. Trees near power
lines may cause interference or outages
during windy conditions.
LEGACY: Akaroa artist Nancy Tichborne was famous for her watercolour
paintings, particularly those of flowers. In recognition of her talent, she
served as patron of Watercolour New Zealand from 2007 until 2019.
Exhibition celebrates
gallery’s long history
A TOUR through many eras of exhibitions
is on offer at the Akaroa Art Gallery
as the organisation celebrates its 50th
anniversary.
The life and work of renowned Akaroa
artist Nancy Tichborne is also on display
in a retrospective exhibition.
“We’re happy with the journey we’ve
been on and we’re proud to celebrate the
staff who have kept it going throughout
the years. The place really brings the
community together,” said committee
member Keith Harris.
The anniversary open weekend will run
on Saturday and Sunday from 10am to
4pm.
Posters and booklets will showcase the
gallery’s past eras from the 1970s to present
day.
A recent highlight for Harris, representing
the gallery’s long-term growth and success,
was the Kelliher exhibition in 2019.
It featured some of New Zealand’s most
highly regarded landscape paintings.
Tichborne died aged 80 in February last
year and her retrospective exhibition has
been running since March 23 and will end
on April 14.
She was most well known for her
watercolour paintings of flowers.
“She’s arguably Akaroa’s most famous
artist and she’s a big part of how we’re
celebrating the 50th,” said Harris.
Tichborne was an advisor for the gallery
and her husband Bryan was a previous
president of the gallery’s committee.
The Tichborne family selected the
works on display and members will be
present for the start of the anniversary
celebration.
The gallery’s committee is proud of the
anniversary milestone and hopes to keep
playing a central role in the local arts
community.
“Any volunteer organisation that
survives and keeps up the momentum for
50 years is something to be really proud
of,” said Harris.
The history of the art gallery began
in 1970 when Akaroa resident Patricia
Bosshard utilised the empty space at a
former power station to set up a gallery
and concert venue.
The gallery, as known today, was
officially established in 1974 when an
incorporated society took over from
Bosshard.
The building on Rue Pompallier now
functions as small museum of technology,
a gallery and concert venue.
2. Root Health
· Look for heaving soil or cracks around the
base.
· Girdling roots can restrict water and
nutrient flow, leading to reduced growth,
structural integrity and increased
susceptibility to pests and disease.
3. Disease, Decay and Presence of
Pests or Insects
· Discoloured or wilted leaves, fungal growth
on the trunk or branches, soft or hollow
areas are all indicators of decay.
5. Weather Events
· Strong winds, heavy rain, storms, and
flooding can alter soil conditions, structural
stability, and canopy structure. Weather
events can weaken trees resulting in partial
or full tree failure. Assessments after weather
events are crucial to detect any changes.
Regular tree inspections are vital in
identifying potential issues and reducing the
risk of harm to individuals or property.
If you observe any worrisome signs or
encounter uncertainties, seek guidance from
Player number drop forces team merger
• By Sam Coughlan
THE DIAMOND Harbour
Rugby Club say a drain on player
numbers is a massive problem for
the sport across the country.
The club has been forced to
default their division 2 side
in the Ellesmere senior men’s
competition due to a lack
of numbers – only 11 have
registered – with the season
starting this weekend.
Senior club captain and life
member Neil Blunden said the
team would be
merged with
Springston in
order to field a
side.
“It means that
we’re not dead,
and if the boys
can get enough
players together
through the
Neil
Blunden
season, then we can go back to
our own club.
“Some of them are eligible and
good enough to play division 1,
something they’d never be able
to do for Diamond Harbour, but
with Springston, they can go on
the bench and have a crack at
division 1 as well.”
The combined team will be
known as Springston-Diamond
Harbour, and wear Springston kit
with Diamond Harbour’s socks.
MERGER: Diamond Harbour’s division 2 team, pictured after last season, has merged with
Springston for this season.
PHOTO: DIAMOND HARBOUR RUGBY CLUB
Blunden said Diamond
Harbour were far from the only
team to face these issues.
“I think it’s across New
Zealand.
“I think 10 or 15 years ago
there were something like 900
rugby clubs in New Zealand and
we’re now down to about 480.
“It’s a massive problem.”
Blunden said they were
lucky to be able to merge with
Springston this season.
“I’m really appreciative of
Kevin Jones, he’s the (Springston)
president and we’re so lucky to
have that opportunity.
“Otherwise the boys either play
for other clubs, or they don’t play
rugby at all, and that’s the team
gone.
“Whereas at the moment, we’re
still alive, and it’s up to the boys
now to bring along mates along
and try and keep us all going.”
He was looking forward to
Diamond Harbour’s club day on
May 11, which would hopefully
both see the combined division 2
side and Springston’s division 1
team play in Diamond Harbour.
“They would quite like to bring
their one team over to Diamond
Harbour, and we (the combined
team) would play the curtainraiser,
and then have the division
1 team play against Woodend.
“Some of our boys might be
there, and that’s huge for the
club.”
He said it would be weird for
the team to play under a different
banner.
“I went out to practice and
talked to them about it and
they said, no, no, no, we don’t
want that, we want to play for
Harbour.
“The boys didn’t want it
initially, but I’ve just tried to keep
that positive vibe going ahead
that this is better than nothing.
We’re still alive.
“We still keep home games
which is great for the people, the
bar, the club, and it gives us 12
months to work on it through the
season and just try to be positive
about the whole thing.”
Unpacking the Bridle Path myth
• By JC Betts
IT IS WELL established the first
four ships arrived at Lyttelton
in December 1850, but what
happened next?
The popular belief is the
pioneers headed over the Bridle
Path at once. But did they?
“... Embedded in the soil of
Christchurch, as much a part of
local history as the pilgrims who
had footed it over the Bridle Path
from Lyttelton, the men in top
hats, the women in crinolines, to
found the city.” – Peter Graham,
So Brilliantly Clever, Awa Press
2011
“The Bridle Path was the
first hurdle for the Canterbury
pioneers of 1850 – after three
months at sea, they were finally
delivered at Lyttelton, only to
have to climb up over the Port
Hills to reach their promised
land. Out of condition, in unsuitable
clothing, and burdened with
the luggage that wouldn’t fit on
the pack horses, they trudged up
the steep side of the crater to get
their first view of the Canterbury
Plains and the site of their new
home.” – Pamela Wade, Sunday
Star-Times, June 21, 2020.
So the first thing the settlers
did on disembarking was parade
over the hill, bag and baggage in
hand, to – what?
In 1850, the only building on
the swamp that was to become
Christchurch was a surveyors’
hut – they were desperately trying
to complete a map of the city
before the immigrants’ arrival.
Meanwhile, back in Lyttelton,
the Canterbury Association’s
chief agent John Godley, chief
surveyor Captain Joseph Thomas
and scores of workers had prepared
for the pilgrims’ arrival
more completely than any other
settlement in New Zealand.
They had built four immigration
barracks; all settlers were entitled
to at least two weeks’ accommodation.
In December 1850
the buildings were overcrowded
with the 750 odd arrivals, so the
younger men camped or built
temporary huts nearby. Many
of the cabin passengers – those
who had already purchased land,
known as ‘colonists’, preferred to
stay on board.
There were already 60 temporary
houses and two hotels
in port. Captain Thomas had
supervised the building of a
wharf, the chief agent’s house, an
office, a store, a boathouse, and
the start of the Sumner Rd over
Tapuaeharuru Evans Pass. Then
the money ran out.
The Bridle Path was built as a
stopgap measure.
Charlotte Godley wrote in
November 1850: “Since the
money was lent by the Governor
for carrying on the works . .
. about 300 pounds has been
devoted to making a bridle path
. . . which is about two miles
shorter than the line of the road,
but it will only be meant for
horses. When we went up there
was still a bit at the top where
no one can ride; man and horse
must climb over rough stones
and rocks, and on the other
side the descent is steep enough
to make most people prefer
walking, too . . .” – Charlotte
Godley, Letters from Early
New Zealand, Whitcombe and
Tombs, 1851.
As Lyttelton was the only town
in Canterbury, it was where the
settlers stayed. Most of them
would have climbed to the top of
the hill to look at the view – and
then gone straight back down to
the port. Those who continued
over to ‘the plains’ were
predominantly the colonists
who had purchased land, keen
to identify the best locations, but
nobody could settle permanently
until the sections had been
allocated. This happened
in late February 1851, after
Christchurch’s first building, the
land office, was completed.
https://www.teuaka.org.nz/online-collection/1135993
The colonists’ land was
distributed in order of payment.
The town sections along
Norwich Quay in Lyttelton,
close to the wharf, were the most
desirable and were snapped up
quickly.
Sites in Christchurch were
selected by colonists who had
paid for their land and brought
supplies and servants with them.
For the majority of settlers –
immigrants who had assisted
passages and needed paid work
– the busy port was much more
attractive. It was also where the
leaders of the community needed
to be. This only changed when
the railway line between the port
and the city was completed in
1867, and around the same time,
Christchurch’s population finally
became bigger than Lyttelton’s.
From the first, a rivalry existed
between the port and ‘the plains’.
The colonists in Christchurch
considered Lyttelton to be
rough and full of unruly types;
Lytteltonians felt Christchurch
was full of snobbish toffs. This
enduring attitude made Lyttelton
the ideal place to go for people
looking for some excitement
away from the strait-laced city.
In the early days, ships in
Lyttelton Harbour would have to
anchor in the stream and smaller
vessels would transport their
cargoes to the wharf or over the
Sumner Bar – it wasn’t possible
to take all the luggage over the
Bridle Path, even if packhorses
had been available, and horses or
any livestock were pretty scarce
in Canterbury in 1850.
So where did this enduring
Bridle Path myth come from?
The responsibility lies with the
1950 centenary celebrations.
One of the most striking events
was a procession of pilgrims’
descendants walking over the
Bridle Path dressed in their
idea of authentic Victorian
costume. (Research shows that
the crinoline made its first
appearance in 1858. Top hats
seem unlikely.)
Somehow, photographs and
illustrations from the 1950
celebrations have lodged in
the collective mind. However
unlikely, the idea of hundreds of
stalwart settlers disembarking
and immediately marching over
the hill somehow stuck and
became accepted as truth. As a
result, the seminal importance
of Lyttelton as the founding
settlement and population centre
of Canterbury for its first 20
years has been forgotten.
Classy, quality European feel to Amarok
MEET THE Volkswagen
Amarok, the German sibling of
the latest Ford Ranger and an
interesting alternative to one of
our best selling Utes.
This model sharing arrangement
between two of the heavy
hitters of the car world – one
from North America the other
Europe – is an interesting alliance
and precursor to other
models expected to spawn.
The current all-conquering
third generation Ranger current
is armed with something for everyone,
with a 15 strong line-up,
comprising 2WD and 4WD versions,
and the choice of single,
super, and double cab body
styles. By contrast the Amarok
is more of a niche market dabbler
operating off the back of a
modest four-model line-up, all
doubles cabs and 4WD. Prices
start at $65,000 for the Life and
peak at $90,000 for the Aventura
V6 turbo diesel.
Conceived and designed in
Germany and Australia, the
new Amarok is battle-hardened
to meet the challenging roads,
terrain and climates both here
and across the Tasman. All
models have impeccable safety
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
credentials and are armed with
maximum 5 Star ANCAP safety
ratings.
Even the price leading $65,000
Life is an attractive package,
powered, albeit meekly, by a
2.0L 125kW turbo diesel that
develops 405Nm of torque and
is hitched to a 6-speed automatic.
With 17” alloy wheels,
rear mechanical differential
lock, LED headlights, heated
exterior mirrors, multifunction
leather steering wheel and
12” touchscreen infotainment,
there’s nothing budget about this
member of the Amarok family,
apart from its price. Safety is
up to the mark with Lane Keep
Assist, Blind Spot Monitor, Traffic
Sign Recognition, Adaptive
Cruise Control and Autonomous
Emergency Braking.
There are high expectations in
the Volkswagen camp around the
$75,000 Style with a 2.0L 154kW
500Nm diesel engine plucked
straight from the Ford Ranger
parts bin. It’s nicely appointed
with 18” alloy wheels, LED Matrix
headlights, 12” touchscreen
infotainment, ambient lighting,
and keyless entry and remote
start. There’s a nice bonus for all
Amarok owners in the form of
a standard across-the-range tow
bar.
The high spec $88,000 Amarok
Pan Americana being reviewed
here has a stronger off-road bias.
If you need a large combative
and capable Ute in most terrain,
this one fits the bill with its lusty
V6 diesel. Features include exclusive
black 18" alloy wheels shod
with all-terrain tyres, heated
leather seats, and a 12” touchscreen
infotainment system. The
driving assistance package offers
Park Assist and Intelligent Adaptive
Cruise control, among other
things,.
The sophisticated, confident
urban orientated Aventura that
shares the turbo V6 diesel is an
attention grabber with 20" alloy
wheels, exterior chrome styling
accents, and body-coloured
sports bar. Among a raft of new
driver assistance features there’s
an excellent Area View Camera.
The Pan Americana packs
plenty of punch with a muscular
3.0L 184kW V6 turbo diesel
packing a mighty 600Nm of
torque, but it isn’t squeaky green
enough to dodge the government’s
maximum $6,900 clean
vehicle fee. It’s fitted with a
full-time 4WD system with six
selectable drive modes, Normal,
Eco, Tow/Haul, Slippery for onroad,
and Mud/Ruts and Sand
for off-road. Tow/Haul mode
cleverly manipulates gearshift
timing to maintain power for hill
Rating out of 10: Performance 8, Handling 8, Build Quality
7, Comfort 7, Passenger and Load Space 8, Avg consumption
on road test 11.6L/100km, Value for money 7, Safety
– Five Star ANCAP crash rating, clean car fee $6,900. Overall
points out of 10: 8
climbing, or the right measure of
engine braking on downhill gradients.
Maximum braked towing
is a useful 3,500 kg.
The V6 turbo diesel lifts the
performance bar for its class to
new lofty heights, with a clever
by-pass set-up for power allows
the turbochargers to work at
lower engine speeds for increased
responsiveness. Alternatively
the smaller turbo can
be bypassed allowing the larger
one to blow into action to deliver
greater power.
This is just some of the ‘behind
the scenes’ technical magic
that conjures up such an ultra
smooth and responsive motor
delivering a memorable on- and
off-road driving experience.
What ever is thrown its way is
dealt with effortlessly like few
other diesel Utes I’ve driven.
This is the sparkling jewel in
the Amarok crown. What really
stands out about this engine is
its silent running characteristics,
a remarkable engineering feat
given diesels are noisy by nature.
The 10-speed automatic is the
perfect match for this strong and
more vibrant V6, with its quick
and intuitive gear changes.
The well-appointed and finished
passenger compartment is
noticeably larger than its aging
predecessor, with the biggest
and soon to be most appreciated
improvement is the amount of
additional rear leg and headroom.
There’s a classy, modern
and quality European feel that
permeates into almost every corner
of the test Ute. This gives the
Volkswagen an important point
of difference over its blue-ovalbadged
sibling. The car is put
together with careful attention;
exactly what you would expect
from a vehicle sporting the name
plate of one of Europe’s biggest
vehicle manufacturers. Nice incabin
touches include wireless
phone charging and an 8 Way
Driver Power seat.
An on-demand 4WD system
allows the vehicle to be driven
in four-wheel drive on hightraction
surfaces via its 4A
automatic mode. When engaged,
it continuously and seamlessly
distributes power between the
front and rear axles for the best
performance in all conditions.
The way this sizeable Ute glides
through corners with poise and
balance is a credit to the team
who designed and developed
it. Ride comfort is outstanding
both on road and off the beaten
track. During my limited off
road excursions, the test vehicle
was surprisingly at ease and took
every opportunity to show off its
formidable 4WD abilities. This is
a more than worthy replacement
for the outgoing Amarok.
It’s a huge step forward, thanks
to Ford.
THE PAPANUI-I nes
Community Board has taken the
rare step of starting a petition
to figh the city council over
funding.
Signatures are being co lected
in a bid to get funding for a community
facility in Shirley.
It comes after the city council
removed funding for the centre
pla ned for Shirley Rd, near the
intersection with Hi ls Rd. This
was the site of the former community
centre, which was badly
damaged in the February 2,
20 1, earthquake.
The removal o funding
prompted community board
chairwoman Ali Jones to threaten
to stand down, citing it as her “die
in the ditch” project.
Ms Jone said the board’s role
is to represen the community,
and by gathering signatures from
residents, it was fulfi ling that
role.
THE OWNERS of Sumner’s Cave
Rock Apartments ar expecting the
Earthquake Commi sion to sign-off
on a se tlement agr emen this w ek.
Body corporate chairman Mike
White said the group had gone
into mediation with IAG and EQC
on February 20, and signed off
on a deal with IAG on February
2 – coincidenta ly seven years
to the day after the February 2,
20 1, earthquake. However, they
are waiting for EQC to sign the
agr ement.
“Given that EQC actua ly drafted
the agr ement, there’ l be no
problem with them doing that.”
The apartment suffered damage
in the February and June, 20 1,
earthquakes and were demolished in
late 2012. In 2016, IAG’s offer of the
difference betw en indemnity value,
$10 mi lion, and the sum insured,
$16 mi lion, was rejected by the body
corporate.
The mediation agr ement
prevented Mr White from disclosing
the se tlement amount, but he said it
involved the two parties paying “a bit
more money than they’d wanted to
earlier.”
