REINALDO MARCUS GREEN
I do not have a photographic memory I have a photogenic memory. I recollect every important event of my lifetime, including my birth, with
considerable accuracy and detail...but much more beautifully than they really were. My powers of retention are distinctly impressionistic. Those
of you that were alive, who were already born: Do you remember where you were on May 11, 1981? Do you? I remember where I was on May
11, 1981: “The day...Bob Marley...DIED!” Paulie Marino & Cindy Vance, college students, eager to exchange their academic concentrations in
The Nutmeg State for an educational sojourn on The Ship of the Sun being driven by The Grateful Dead from the New Haven Coliseum to
Infinity & Beyond one fateful Monday in May. The 5/11 show in New Haven was phenomenal. Everyone on the no-chairs-floor of the Coliseum
was doing a sort of modified dab dance in unison for 3 minutes between sets before their arms turned into photogenic, impressionistic
lightning bolts. Bass player Phil Lesh had Day-Glo paint on his arms when the Second Set opened. There were best-in-class versions of To Lay
Me Down, China Doll, and The Wheel. And the Encore, I Can't Get No Satisfaction, blew the roof off that ol' hockey rink, leaving us completely
satisfied. So we headed to our car & turned on the radio to hear whatever Grateful Dead songs the DJs were gonna play. Radio stations always
played tunes by the band in town after a concert back then. So we put on WPLR: Rastaman Chant; Redemption Song; I Shot the Sheriff; Exodus;
by the time they got to Could You Be Loved...we knew...we all knew. Dan Rather had already announced Bob's passing on the CBS Evening
News, which aired at 6:30 on the East Coast. But information traveled slowly in the Days of Olde. Bob's death wasn't known to the New Haven
Dead world. Not even the band knew. They'd pay homage to Marley the next night in New Haven with an 18 minute version of their dirge He's
Gone. “He's Gone!”, Cindy sighed, welling up, “What do we do now?” “We lively up ourselves. The Rastaman Vibration is a positive vibration.
No Woman, No Cry! Don't worry about a thing. 'Cause every little thing gonna be alright.” I'm Paulie; a journalist; with a photogenic memory.
And that's how I remember May 11, 1981.
The memory of the Rastaman Sensation in “Bob Marley: One Love” is much more photographic. His death from melanoma on 5/11/81 at just
36 is documented in white-on-black storyboard before the credits. The Epilogue shows clips of Bob Marley and the Wailers at the One Love
Peace Concert on 4/22/78 in National Stadium, Kingston, Jamaica, where just a year after his diagnosis, you can already see the toll the disease
had taken on his face & body. The film briefly shows Bob (Kingsley Ben-Adir) growing up, being abandoned, almost denied, by his white father
(Daniel Melville, Jr.), then later by his mother (Nadine Marshall). A recurring motif of tween Bob (Nolan Collignon) running from a wild fire as
his father follows behind on a white horse is striking. As an insecure teenager (Quan-Dajai Henriques), he meets Rita (Nia Ashi) who
encourages him & turns him on to Rastafari. The movie follows his meteoric raise In popularity with the help of his band, which includes wife
Rita (Lashana Lynch). Bob's dark side is displayed in an explosive fight with his manager Don Taylor (Anthony Welsh), contrasting his message
of peace. Much of the film is post-Peter Tosh (Alexx A-Game) and Bunny Wailer's (Abijah Livingston, Bunny's son) departure from The Wailers,
with the focus more on the period with Aston “Family Man” Barrett (his son Aston, Jr.) and Junior Marvin (David Kerr). James Norton is great as
Chris Blackwell, the record producer most responsible for Marley's crossover to mainstream America & worldwide.
As of this writing, One Love is still in theaters. It has 92 Audience Rotten Tomatoes, but some critics have objected, saying an American director
& British actor making a film about the Jamaican legend is borderline cultural appropriation. Good thing Denis Villeneuve & Timothée
Chalamet were born on the planet Arrakis or we wouldn't have the Dune reboot. 4 Stars!
THE REAL
STORY OF 420
By Les Kippel
So we all know the number 420, but none of us are really sure where the number came from. There was a
CBS news reporter who said number started in Berkeley, California when students at the University would
meet at the quad at 4:20 in the afternoon to get high. Problem is that that is not the truth!
So we have to think and look at history to find out where that number 420 possibly could’ve come from. The
answer has been in front of us since August 9, 1995. It just so happens that the lead singer of the Grateful
Dead, Jerry Garcia died on August 9, 1995 at 4:23 AM.
In 1995 police officers did not have Internet - they did not have cell phones. All they had were walkietalkies.
Well hippies also had walkie-talkies , and when a group of hippies get together in Golden Gate Park
with their guitars and herb to party and be mellow, the police in San Francisco had to find a way to notify
their fellow police officers that were a bunch of hippies in Golden Gate Park, breaking the law. They had to
do it in such a way that the hippies with their walkie-talkie would have no idea that the police were about
to come down on their great evening of hanging out.
So the police will get on their walkie-talkies and say '420 in progress' and then fellow officers knew it was
time to join up and catch the group of hippies, breaking the law by playing music and getting high. Of
course, this number 420 would go a lot further than just Golden Gate Park! The police and the rest of
California started using the number 420 and then it started going east to Texas, Arizona, Mississippi,
Pennsylvania, New York, California, every city and state in the nation.
The police on their walkie-talkies would use the number 420. That’s how the number 420 became a
national term for being cool and excepting getting high as something that everyone does.
In this day and age we use the number for everything and everywhere - go on dating sites' I’m 420
friendly'. Everyone looks at their watch and it’s 4:20 in the afternoon time to take a break from work - time
to go take a smoke - time to be cool.
No one would think that from the Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia in 1995 it will be close to 30 years later
and a simple word is the simple number 420. It is still widely accepted in use today but once again how
many people really know that this number came from Jerry Garcia.
OFF
FOCUS
ON LOCALS
When worlds collide it’s often a beautiful spectacle in the cosmos. The same holds true with Esh x Schief. Chris ‘Schief’ Schiefelbein hails from the
Midwest state of Minnesota and Eshtemoh ‘Esh’ Morgan was born in the slums of Brooklyn, NY. These two amazingly talented guitarists made for the
most unlikely pairing when they met through mutual friends at Stetson University. Schief a new member to the universities alumni and Esh descending
from the GRAMMY Award winning Morgan Heritage family legacy thought it would be a fresh dynamic sound to bring both their acoustic guitars and
smooth vocals together to form the duo they call Esh x Schief.
Having studied the great Simon and Garfunkel, among other great singer songwriters from the last 50 years, they knew instantly that their union could
be something special. Coming from two completely different backgrounds didn’t stop these young men from finding common ground, which was to use
their gifted talent to take them to the places of their dreams. Cool, fun exciting tales of college life with all its ups and downs would become their
canvas as they create an intriguing sound to inspire a generation.
Esh grew up in a musical family but even with music embedded in his DNA he quickly learned that this didn’t guarantee success. After receiving only 2
guitar lessons, his father suggested he go on YouTube and search for lessons at the age of only 9 years old. He received a book with chords and scale
he’d never heard of but he was determined to earn his right of passage and build upon his family’s legacy as he embarks on his own journey. Before
earning a scholarship to the Berklee School of Music’s highly touted summer program, Esh began to double down on his daily YouTube lessons and
coupled them with his Middle School and High School choir classes. This was enough for the administrators at Stetson University to award his 8 years of
focus, hard work and dedication with a full Arts Scholarship to their nationally recognized School of Music.
to
Coming from humble beginnings in St Paul, Minnesota, Schief has experienced tremendous academic
and performance success.Ata very young age he became a certified luthier and had the honor to
travel across the 7 seas with the legendary multi GRAMMY Award winning artist formerly known as
Prince. Schief was his personal guitar and bass technician during the “Twenty10”tour. During this
time, he absorbed first-hand knowledge in music performance of the highest caliber. Feeling
inspired by his time with the late great master of the arts, Schief returned to academia to begin his
studies as a professional musician, composer, and music theorist. After winning numerous songwriting
competitions and receiving multiple Collegiate Scholarships, his achievements brought him
Stetson University. He graduated top of his class, then went on to perform across Florida as well as
the United States at premier venues and festivals gaining invaluable experience.
One day visiting his alma mater in Stetson University, Schief heard of an 18-year-old prodigy named
Eshtemoh Morgan. Little did he know, that one day their paths would cross and give birth to the next
dynamic duo set to blaze a trail of their own as they follow in the footsteps of the great singer
songwriters that have inspired them both throughout the years. From the depths of John Mayer,
Elvis Presley, Otis Redding, Bill Withers, Ed Sheeran and countless others, these two enthusiastic
captivating young men are poised to put a fresh spin on the singer songwriter experience.
