Message from the CEO 

The academic year 2024-2025 marks a significant 

milestone for the Institute for Education (IfE) as 

it celebrates its 10 th anniversary. Since its inception 

in 2015 it has served as a key institution for initial 

teacher training, professional development of all 

stakeholders involved in the education sector, 

and the development of qualifications for anyone 

providing a service in schools. The IfE has 

consistently prioritised its commitment to shaping 

future generations through an evolving learning 

community. The IfE has moulded professionals 

who have at heart the wellbeing of their students 

through rewarding educational experiences. 

Within a constantly changing world, the IfE team 

persevered to propose worthwhile practices that 

could happen in schools and in classrooms. 

Our journey began with a vision ‘To shape future 

generations through an ever-evolving learning 

environment.’ Anchored in values of equity and 

social justice, the IfE has unwaveringly upheld these 

principles in every course designed and delivered. 

It prioritises the fostering of learning communities 

that influence the student’s holistic development in 

a personalised way. 

The IfE’s personalised learning approach recognises 

the unique strengths, aspirations, and challenges 

of each course participant. The team’s dedication 

extends to supporting each person throughout the 

educational journey. Competencies are developed 

in an inclusive environment that places the wellbeing 

of the course participant at the centre of all 

decisions taken. 

Our commitment to steer away from traditional 

assessment methods and adopt a no-examination 

policy proved to be successful throughout these 

years. We have championed alternative forms of 

assessment that focus on holistic development, 

critical thinking, and practical application of 

knowledge. The successful application of such an 

assessment practice and the strong evidence of 

learning, support our decision in this matter; and we 

intend to continue to improve whenever possible. 

During the past decade, the IfE has forged 

collaborations and partnerships with esteemed 

institutions and external contributors both locally 

and abroad. This has enriched the institution and 

has brought in several opportunities for the course 

participants to broaden their experiences in the 

world outside the education sector. The wealth 

of information and the encountering of diverse 

perspectives continuously enhance the educational 

experiences of our course participants contributing 

to their professional progress. 

Our dedication to research has elevated the IfE’s 

status as a significant contributor to education. 

Our involvement in the ongoing dialogue about 

effective teaching methodologies, teacher 

professional development, and educational policy 

has increased during the past few years, and we 

intend to strengthen this area and to become more 

influential. 

Acknowledging that growth comes with challenges, 

the IfE remains steadfast in overcoming hurdles


and embracing future opportunities. Our focus 

remains on empowering educators, and all involved 

to be beneficial to the holistic development of each 

student in this pathway of growth. 

As we move forward, the IfE commits that the 

courses will remain accessible and inclusive, 

catering to diverse course participants coming from 

various backgrounds. The IfE will be at the forefront 

of educational innovation by regularly reviewing 

its programmes, adopting emerging pedagogical 

approaches, and staying attuned to developments 

in schools.

During the past ten years, the IfE has provided a 

pathway for many interested in, or working in the 

field of education to become professionals in this 

sector. As IfE celebrates its 10th year, it perseveres 

in its contribution to education, resilience, and to the 

holistic development of the learners guaranteeing 

to remain committed to empowering individuals 

with the competencies needed to thrive in this very 

complex world.

LOCATION AND FACILITIES 

Location and Facilities


The IfE is located in the limits of Pembroke, 

overlooking the sea and the Madliena 

Tower. The entire building enjoys notable 

nature views and is at a considerable 

distance from any other buildings, 

creating a calm and quiet environment for 

your learning experience. 

The IfE premises offer numerous facilities to its 

course participants, including: 

• Classrooms with different setups and 

equipment for whatever a session 

might require 

• Wheelchair access to the building 

• Baby/nappy changing facilities 

• A cafeteria with food and beverage 

vending machines 

• A breakroom with sofas and chairs 

• A multi-faith room 

The premises make it possible for our lecturers to 

be creative in how they deliver their sessions, such 

as the case of applying outdoor learning. Certain 

sessions are also delivered in other venues and 

schools which we are in partnership with. 

The IfE premises are an ideal space for events and 

are, in fact, the venue for several activities which 

the IfE organises and hosts throughout the year.

Since 2018, the IfE offers the right opportunity for those who want 

to pursue a career in education. One can seek to become a teacher 

by choosing a suitable qualification pathway through either Bachelor 

of Education, Postgraduate Diploma or Master of Education.Qualified 

teachers can opt to progress in their career by pursing a Master’s 

Degree in Applied Educational Leadership. Furthermore, the professional 

educator that self-reflects will value the different awards offered that 

can bridge the gaps one may have. Each year the IfE offers more 

streams as part of the initial teacher training qualifications and more 

awards for continuous professional development in various areas. 

Moreover, the IfE offers a specialised course for those working in the 

areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics through 

the Master of Science in STEM Education and Engagement.

the IfE is a decision to study for a 

high standard qualification or award 

that is delivered part-time using a 

blended learning modality. The quality 

and expectations remain as high as 

for any qualification that is delivered

since studying while having other 

commitments can offer a challenge 

which can be overcome if there is a

Admissions Department. Consider this

well-being and your voice as a course 

participant. To ensure that we achieve

prior learning, handling extenuating

of course participants in their academic

where course participants from both the

qualification programme, it is essential to factor

serve as a foundation for educators to enhance

to deliver enriched learning experiences to 

students. Additionally, certain awards may serve 

as prerequisites for specific job positions and 

contribute to accelerated career progression 

schemes. 

Our Bachelor of Education (Hons) and Master 

of Education degrees serve as comprehensive 

initial teacher training programmes, catering to 

supply teachers and individuals aspiring to enter 

the teaching profession. These programmes 

equip participants with essential pedagogical 

knowledge tailored for primary, secondary, or 

vocational education settings. The Bachelor of 

Education (Hons) programmes are suitable for 

those interested in teaching a subject or area 

without possessing a first degree, while the Master 

of Education programme targets individuals with 

a first degree seeking to expand their expertise 

into teaching. Furthermore, participants in the 

Master of Education programme have the option 

to exit at Postgraduate Diploma level upon the 

successful completion of two years of studies.

further may explore our flagship programme, the 

Master in Applied Educational Leadership. This 

programme serves as an ideal platform for those 

interested in pursuing a career in educational 

leadership, with a focus on school management. 

The Master of Science in STEM Education and 

Engagement is a dynamic programme tailored 

for individuals interested in enhancing STEM 

education and engaging diverse audiences. 

Developed in response to the growing demand 

for skilled communicators in science, technology, 

engineering, and mathematics, this programme 

equips participants with essential tools and 

strategies. Whether you’re an educator or a 

professional seeking to bridge the gap between 

STEM fields and the public, this programme 

offers a comprehensive framework for expertise 

development. 

The IfE has widened its portfolio and will start 

offering the Master of Science in Addressing 

Adolescents with Divergent Behaviour. This 

programme will provide a comprehensive 

understanding of the complex challenges 

surrounding adolescents exhibiting divergent


behaviour but also equips professionals 

with advanced skills crucial for their career 

advancement. Targeting educators, social 

workers, youth workers, and similar professionals 

who are seeking to specialise in addressing the 

needs of adolescents with diverse behavioural 

patterns, this programme opens doors to 

rewarding careers dedicated to supporting and 

rehabilitating adolescents in diverse settings. 

Qualified educators seeking to enhance their 

teaching methodologies and advance their career 

prospects can delve into our Postgraduate 

Certificate in Assessment for Learning Teaching 

Strategies. This programme is designed to equip 

educators with the requisite knowledge, skills, 

and competencies to thrive in the classroom 

environment. One will have the opportunity to 

explore innovative pedagogical strategies aimed 

at enriching the teaching and learning experience 

for both the educator and the students. 

Aligned with the Digital Competence Framework 

for Educators (DigCompEdu), IfE offers the 

Postgraduate Certificate in Digital Competences 

for Education (MQF Level 7, 30 ECTS). This 

programme offers educators an avenue to 

enhance their digital skills and proficiencies 

in digital literacies, particularly focusing on 

technologies that augment educational practices. 

Our first top-up programme in Early Years, a 

collaborative venture, facilitates Early Years’ 

educators holding a higher national diploma 

to upgrade their qualifications to a bachelor’s 

degree level. The Bachelor of Arts (Hons) Early 

Years, Learning, and Care (Top-Up), delivered in 

partnership with MCAST, is the perfect stepping 

stone for Early Years’ educators to grow and 

progress in their professional career. 

While many of our programmes pave the way for 

aspiring educators to qualify for regular teaching 

positions, we encourage individuals to review 

employment requirements outlined by potential 

employers and the criteria established by the 

Council for the Teaching Profession for teaching 

warrants.

WORK INTEGRATED LEARNING 

Work Integrated Learning 

The IfE’s aspiration is that Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) is embedded as a formal component into its 

undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Therefore, degree programmes addressed towards educators’ 

development and initial teacher training have embedded within them a WIL component; this is reflected 

primarily through the teaching practice and the micro-placement modules. The WIL Department offers 

course participants the opportunity to apply the theoretical knowledge gained from their academic settings 

to a work-based scenario. 

Teaching Practice 

Teaching Practice is a vital component of initial 

teacher-training programmes as it provides an 

opportunity for the learners to put theory into 

practice and to self-reflect on teaching and 

assessment methods employed in the classroom. 

Furthermore, this module is an integral part of the 

programme, which will also contribute towards 

partially fulfilling the requirements outlined by the 

Council for the Teaching Profession with respect 

to applications for a teacher’s warrant. 

The IfE offers Teaching Practice placements within 

the following degree programmes:

Teaching Practice 

Fact Sheet Checklists 

TIME-FRAME & LOGISTICS 

The Teaching Practice is a FULL-TIME 

component. 

It takes place in a compulsory 

education setting. Teaching Practice 

is currently, not permitted within postcompulsory 

schools. 

It takes place during compulsory 

school hours – Monday to Friday for 

the whole school day. 

Part-time teaching during Teaching 

Practice is only allowed if a prospective 

student is already employed in a 

school on a part-time basis. 

Participants are expected to remain 

on the school grounds for the entire 

school day throughout the whole 

Teaching Practice period. 

The IfE is not responsible for any 

remuneration offered to participants 

during the Teaching Practice period. 

Teaching Practice Placements in Gozo 

are not guaranteed.


TO CONSIDER IF NOT EMPLOYED 

IN THE EDUCATION SECTOR 

Course participants shall be aware 

that IfE will be liaising with MEYR for 

their Teaching Practice placement. 

Participants employed outside 

the educational sector need to 

make the necessary vacation leave 

arrangements to ensure that they are 

available for the whole duration of the 

Teaching Practice period (on a fulltime 

basis). 

It is to be noted that although practice 

placements fall within different 

academic years, two (2) Teaching 

Practice placements might fall within 

one (1) calendar year. Depending on 

the programme followed, this could 

mean a total of 15 weeks’ practice 

placement in a year. 

TO CONSIDER IF ALREADY EMPLOYED 

IN THE EDUCATION SECTOR 

If already employed as LSEs/KGEs, 

course participants are to discuss 

with their Head of School, as they 

will be required to change schools for 

their Teaching Practice. 

If employed at a church/independent 

school, course participants should 

check with their Head of School 

that the workload and timetable 

requirements, found in the checklist 

below, can be met. If these cannot be 

met, they will be required to do their 

placement at a different school. 

If already employed as a supply 

teacher, course participants should 

check with their Head of School

REQUIREMENTS: QUALIFICATION LEADING 

TO B.Ed. (Hons) & M.Ed. PRIMARY 

Course participants following 

B.Ed. (Hons) Primary or M.Ed. 

Primary are expected to deliver 

the full timetable of a regular 

class teacher at a Primary school. 

No subject teaching is permitted 

during the Teaching Practice 

period. The subjects to be covered 

are Mathematics, English, Maltese, 

Social Studies, Religion, Science, 

Physical Education and Art/Arts & 

Crafts. 

During Teaching Practice course 

participants are expected to 

deliver lessons for Arts/Arts & 

Crafts, Science, and Physical 

Education (P.E.), subject to school 

regulations. 

If a peripatetic subject teacher 

is going to deliver one of these 

peripatetic subjects: Arts/Arts 

& Crafts, Music, Dance, Drama, 

Science, Ethics, P.E., or ICT, the 

course participant on placement 

must ensure that they participate 

in class and support the teacher 

during these lessons, subject to 

school regulations. 

REQUIREMENTS: QUALIFICATION LEADING TO 

B.Ed (Hons) & M.Ed – SUBJECT SPECIALISATION 

Subject Specific course 

participants are expected to 

be teaching the subject that 

they are studying as part of 

the qualification. The minimum 

workload is that of 15 lessons 

(weekly). 

Course participants following 

a qualification in Art, Drama, 

Physical Education, Music, Ethics, 

PSCD are to note that during the 

whole course/programme they 

will have one Teaching Practice in 

a Primary School and one Teaching 

Practice in a Secondary School 

setting.



Micro-Placements in Industry 

The IfE is offering micro-placements within the industry. The 

uniqueness of this concept is that the micro-placement modules 

are integrated within qualifications that are targeted towards initial 

teachers’ training and specialisation in education. We seek to build 

a stronger bridge between the education sector and the world of 

work through this initiative. 

MICRO-PLACEMENT 

VIDEO TESTIMONIALS 

The micro-placement modules are found in two programmes 

offered by the IfE: 

• Within the Bachelor of Education (Hons), the microplacement 

module carries six (6) ECTS, with 90 hours of 

hands-on training 

• As an MQF level 7 Award (10 ECTS), the programme is 

targeting educators already working in the field who are 

primarily seeking to further their continuous professional 

development by making their teaching practices more

Through these modules, our course participants will gain additional skills through collaboration, networking,

MATURITY CLAUSE 

Maturity Clause 

Are you over the age of 23 and interested in applying for our Bachelor 

programme? Then the maturity clause might interest you. 

What requirements do I need to satisfy to be considered as a mature participant? 

This clause permits an applicant who satisfies the following conditions to apply for 

consideration to participate in a course as a mature student. Apart from any additional 

eligibility requirements, the candidate must, at a minimum: 

i. 

be in possession of the School Leaving Certificate or Secondary School Certificate 

and Profile (SSC&P) 

ii. 

have on the date of application 

a) attained the age of 23 for entry to courses at MQF Level 5 or higher 

b) attained the age of 21 for entry to courses at MQF Level 4. 

Applicants interested in the Bachelor programmes applying 

under the maturity clause must also be in possession of MQF 

Level 3 certifications awarded by MATSEC or an equivalent 

examination body recognised by the Institute for Education as 

listed in the Admission Regulations of the IfE available here: 

Applicants who apply under the maturity clause must demonstrate academic potential 

and show that they have gained academically relevant knowledge and workplace 

experience. This will be assessed through an interview in which applicants need 

to present a portfolio with a list of requested documents. Following the interview, 

applicants may also be required to undertake additional studies as a condition for 

their acceptance.


Is the maturity clause applicable to all programmes? 

The maturity clause is applicable only to short courses of more than six (6) ECTS and 

full Bachelor qualifications. 

The maturity clause is not applicable for admission to: 

• Awards of less than six (6) ECTS 

• Postgraduate Certificate Programmes 

• Master Programmes 

• The Bachelor of Arts (Hons) Early Years, Learning and Care programme

RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING/ INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS 

Recognition of Prior Learning 

Do you think you have covered similar content to that included in our programmes? 

Do you have experience through which you accumulated relevant knowledge 

applicable to the programme? Then this might be applicable to you. 

What is RPL? 

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a 

formalised process through which credit may 

be awarded for learning undertaken prior to the 

commencement of a course offered by the IfE 

or learning completed together with, but not as 

part of the IfE course for which a prospective 

course participant has applied or is registered. 

What are the pros of RPL? 

RPL avoids duplication of previous learning, 

whilst ensuring that credit is only awarded 

when strong evidence is presented of 

successful achievement of the learning 

outcomes applicable to the level and content 

of the award for which the learner has applied 

or is registered. 

When is RPL considered? 

Usually, only qualifications and experience 

acquired within 10 years of the date of an RPL 

claim will be admissible as evidence to support 

a claim. Certain courses may apply a different 

time period to reflect professional and other 

regulatory requirements. 

When do you need to claim RPL? 

An RPL application for exemption can be made 

once a potential course participant has been 

accepted onto the programme.

International Applicants 

The IfE welcomes applications from worldwide learners. For the purpose of 

admissions, applicants from EU and EEA countries are considered the same 

as nationals. Learners from countries outside Home/EU/EEA are classified as 

international applicants. International course participants who intend to move to 

Malta for study reasons, require an authorisation from Identità for the duration of 

the programme to be able to study locally.

For Bachelor programmes, apart from the

The IfE offers a range of qualifications, allowing professionals

A number of streams within the qualifications may open on 

alternate years. 

Applicants awaiting results for qualifications requested under 

the minimum entry requirements (with the exception of MQF 

Level 3 qualifications) may be accepted as Probationary 

Course Participants. These applicants will be required to 

provide proof that they are currently awaiting first-sitting 

results and consequently provide proof of successful 

attainment of these results.
