I NEWS I
The stage is set for Vinexpo
Asia 2024
With an eye on Asia’s diverse and dynamic wine
and spirits market, Vinexpo Asia opens its doors on
28 May to exhibitors from 35 countries. Thousands
of importers, merchants, hoteliers and other trade
visitors will be attending the much-anticipated
three-day event.
Vinexpo Asia is the region’s
leading event for the wine and
spirits sector, and for the first
time in six years, it heads back
to the vibrant metropolis of
Hong Kong, at the gateway to
the Guangdong-Hong Kong-
Macao Greater Bay Area and
the Mainland Chinese market.
The show will take place at the
Hong Kong Convention and
Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) and
feature 35 exhibitor countries
from across the globe. An
estimated 10,000 trade visitors
from 60 different nations are
also expected to attend.
“Vinexpo Asia is an essential
meeting place for our industry.
I meet many of my colleagues
there and there is a real diversity
of producers exhibiting”, says
Ronald Khoo, Head of Wine and
Spirits at Cathay Pacific.
Approximately 40% of the
exhibitors hail from France.
The other 60% represent a
diversity of regions, including
North America (Canada and the
United States), South America
(Chile and Argentina), Africa
(Ethiopia and South Africa)
and even the Balkans (Bosnia-
Herzegovina and Belarus).
There will also be producers
from Australia, New Zealand,
Singapore, Spain, Italy and
Mainland China, where
according to the IWSR Institute,
wine and spirits consumption
is expected to grow by 19% in
value between now and 2027.
Among the trade visitors,
approximately 50% are
importers. The other half are
wholesalers, wine merchants,
retailers, hoteliers and
restauranteurs, who will have an
opportunity not only to network
and collaborate, but also to
learn. Vinexpo Asia places a
special emphasis on education,
and its Vinexpo Academy offers
more than 50 premium sessions
led by 75 experts. The goal is
to encourage innovation and
promote excellence, all with an
eye on the Asian market, where
rising incomes, an expanding
middle class, and a growing
affinity for Western lifestyles
promise opportunities for wine
and spirits producers.
Mainland China continues to
be the region’s largest import
market, but wine and spirits
professionals are also keen to
target consumers in places such
as Taiwan, Vietnam, Thailand,
Japan, South Korea, Singapore,
Malaysia, and the Philippines
CSR STRATEGY 2024
Vinexpo Asia continues to take steps toward
sustainability, and with an eye on reducing
its carbon footprint organisers for this
year’s event have adopted some key CSR
strategies.
COLLECTING CORKS
Exhibitors are asked to set their corks aside
in receptacles located on exhibit counters
and in the aisles.
Those corks will then be collected so that
the materials can be reused. Proceeds will
later be donated to a charity organisation.
SAAVY SHIPPING
Knowing that transpor t is a major source
of CO2 emissions, Vinexpo Asia will provide
wine glasses (68,000 of them) from its
French stock so as to avoid having to bring
them in from each exhibitor's country.
Organisers place an emphasis, furthermore,
on shipping materials by boat, and
encourage exhibitors to do the same.
Also, to cut down on waste, all spittoons and
ice buckets will be collected at the end to be
reused in future events.
TRIMMING BACK
When it comes to the environment, less is
more. With that in mind, organisers removed
10,000 sq. metres of aisle carpet.
The choice was also made to use recycled
materials, especially wood, to build booths,
and to use existing rooms for the Vinexpo
Academy.
I MARKET TRENDS I
Vinexpo Asia 2024: A gateway to
markets ripe with opportunity
As major players in the wines and spirits industry from
around the world prepare to gather in Hong Kong for
Vinexpo Asia 2024, the panorama in Asia's wine and
spirits trade is one of ample opportunity. Throughout the
region, incomes are rising, the middle class is growing, and
consumer habits, particularly among young people, are
shifting, especially when it comes to wine.
South Korea is a case in point.
Beer and spirits continue to be the
country's alcoholic beverages of
choice, but consumption of still and
sparkling grape-based wines is very
much on the rise, with compound
annual growth of 16% and 15%
respectively over the past several
years, according to the IWSR Institute.
What's driving the shift? Online sales,
for one, along with changing attitudes
among young consumers, who
have a growing affinity for westernassociated
products and see wine as
both fashionable and sophisticated.
Young people are impacting wine
sales in Japan as well, helping push
sales of white and sparkling wines
in a country that has traditionally
preferred reds, particularly from
France, Italy and California.
Overall, per capita wine consumption
is rising there, and the market is
expected to grow 6.3% in the 2023-
2028 period, as reported by the
IMARC Group research company.
It doesn't hurt that Japan has a
sophisticated food culture, with more
Michelin-starred restaurants (554 in
2023) than any nation in the world
other than France.
Even places like Kazakhstan are
seeing a spike in wine consumption
as sectors of the youth population,
influenced by opportunities to study
abroad, embrace a more diverse
culinary culture and seek out wine,
especially from Italy and Georgia.
Asia's biggest wine and spirits
market, of course, continues to be
mainland China, where French and
Chilean wine exporters have done
particularly well.
Italian sparkling wines are also
experiencing an upward trend in
China, as are German wines, driven
by young consumers. And there's
good news on the horizon for
Australian producers, as changes to
China's customs duties along with
improved diplomatic relations should
boost market access
I EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
I
Vinexpo Asia 2024
a "small spark" helping rekindle
the wine and spirits industry in China
Vinexposium CEO Rodolphe Lameyse enthusiastic
about the show's return to Hong Kong after six years
Ahead of this year's Vinexpo Asia, The Daily spoke with
Vinexposium CEO Rodolphe Lameyse in an exclusive
interview about the history of Vinexposium's connections
with Hong Kong, the changes the wine and spirits industry
has undergone in Asia in recent years and why face-to-face
events are now more strategic than ever.
This will be the Vinexpo show’s first
time back in Hong Kong in six years.
After Vinexposium’s return to Asia in
Singapore last year, what strategic
advantages does Hong Kong offer
for fostering business development
and networking within the global
wine and spirits market?
The last Vinexpo in Hong Kong was in
2018. It was only six years ago, but it's
almost like it was another world.
The pre-Covid era and the pre-
Vinexposium era. Everyone is familiar
with the impact Covid had on the
world and the industry. It's also
different in that it was the time of
Vinexpo, but not yet Vinexposium.
Back then, we had one show a year,
either in Bordeaux or Hong Kong.
Now we've changed completely with
one show a year in Paris, one show a
year in the United States, one show
a year in India, and one show a year
in Asia, alternating every other year
between Singapore and Hong Kong.
But it's still a real comeback because
Hong Kong remains a privileged
place due to its attractiveness and
geographical position. Hong Kong is
now, more than ever, the gateway to
the wine and spirits market in China.
How does the enduring relationship
between Vinexposium and Hong
Kong contribute to the success of
Vinexpo Asia?
Vinexposium has a very strong history
with Hong Kong that goes back 26
years. It's a relationship that has
continued except during the Covid
period. We have important contacts
with service providers, the Hong Kong
Convention and Exhibition Center
(HKCEC), the Hong Kong Tourism
Board (HKTB), and even within the
Hong Kong SAR government. It's a
very strong relationship, which is very
important for us and is also a guarantee
of success for the upcoming edition.
While Vinexposium's return to Hong
Kong is being met with a high level
of participation, I think it will be very
positive for the whole industry to see
that the market in China is starting to
pick up again and that Vinexpo Asia
2024 might be the small spark that
gets the engine going.
How has the Chinese wine and
spirits market changed in the last
few years?
The Chinese market for spirits and
wines has been deeply transformed
over the last six years. Why
transformed? Because there were two
or three years of travel restrictions as
well as restrictions to access to the
hotel and catering industry, which
is still a major act of consumption in
China. Culturally, it is more common
to go to restaurants often and gather
there together with family, friends and
colleagues, it isn't common to entertain
at home in the same way it is in Europe.
So this has profoundly transformed the
way alcohol is consumed in China and
Asia as a whole.
This has had a major impact on
the economy. Unsurprisingly, a lot
of businesses, hotels, bars and
restaurants have closed and probably
disappeared. But I'm a believer in the
French physicist Lavoisier's saying:
"nothing is created, nothing is lost,
everything is transformed". I think
that's exactly what's happening on
the Asian market. Probably the way
of doing business for wine producers
and wine merchants is different from
what it was before Covid. Before, you
had mega-importers who had a fairly
extensive product catalogue and
who were responsible for distribution
throughout a country. Now, the
number of offers has increased
considerably and we've realised that
the market has fragmented a little
and that these large importers don't
necessarily have the desire or the
vocation to continue to work with a
very broad range of brands. It will
become the responsibility of wine
merchants and producers to go out
and meet the players on the Chinese
market.
Why is it so important for the wine
and spirits industry, and especially
Vinexposium, to be present in China
today?
The Chinese economy is the second
largest in the world, it cannot be
ignored. It's a market of 1.3 billion
people. Not having a presence in
China today will probably slow
the development of your business
tomorrow. That's why we need to
re-establish the link, we need to be
present there.
For my part, I'm quite excited about
this return to Hong Kong, firstly
because it's historic, it's an important
part of Vinexposium. It's also a market
with great opportunities for those who
take the trouble and make the effort
to understand the market today with
the transformation that's taken place
VINEXPOSIUM:
SERVING THE
ENTIRE WINE
AND SPIRITS
INDUSTRY
Vinexposium's CEO underlined
the importance of Vinexpo Asia
as a meeting place for players
in the wine and spirits industry
today. He alluded to the lack of
a major representation of Asian
buyers at Wine Paris & Vinexpo
Paris as well as other major wine
shows in the first half of this
year. He said that he felt there
had been a "profound change" in
the way global business is being
conducted: "We are perhaps
moving a little more towards
continentalisation, meaning that
buyers from Asia stay in Asia
and the West stays amongst
themselves." He cited that this
could be linked to the cost of
travel, but is also a question of
supply and demand, with Asia
historically being a demand
market that came to Europe to
buy products. He believes that
this has changed and "is a little
bit the other way round" now.
In this context, he highlighted
the importance for Vinexposium
"to have a permanent, long-term
presence in Asia, with meetings
in Singapore and Hong Kong,
because it's the main contact
with all the buyers in the Asian
zone." He firmly stated that as
CEO of Vinexposium and after
the success of Paris and Asia,
"we're here to serve the entire
wine and spirits industry"
I TRADE TALK I
Thailand's flavourful cuisine offers
incredible pairing possibilities
Nutawan Jumpanak, top sommelier at the Anantara Siam
Bangkok Hotel and Thailand's Best Sommelier 2019,
has been described as a veritable “wine guru.” The Daily
Vinexpo Asia spoke with her ahead of this year's show
about Thailand’s unique wine scene.
which sometimes surprises people.
Among all of the women Sommelier
that I've ever worked with, they all put
100 percent effort into every detail.
This level of quality and attention to
detail is gaining recognition.
My favorite part is the moment when I
get to teach a guest about a particular
wine. And almost always, when wine
is on the table, conversations are
interesting, upbeat and successful
What are some of the major trends
in wine in Thailand at the moment in
your opinion?
The pandemic closed restaurants and
bars in Thailand, and people could
only drink wine at home. But now
that things are back open, there’s a
real trend toward premium labels,
especially in the fine-wine market.
How does this market differ from
other parts of Asia?
Our particular cuisine, with its
emphasis on flavours and seasoning,
makes for extraordinary opportunities
to experiment with food and wine
pairing, and creates a natural niche
for small-scale wine producers and
sparkling wines.
You have been vocal about changing
the perception surrounding women
and wine in Asia. Can you tell us
about why this is so important and
what changes you’ve seen in the
industry so far?
It is a blessing to be a woman in the
wine industry. We are passionate, and
bring a particular feminine energy. We
have exceptional wine knowledge,
What is your favourite part about
working in the wine and spirits
industry?
A vision for taste and quality
in China's wine market
The Daily spoke with Master of Wine Jennifer Docherty
about the importance of taste for Chinese consumers and
what to expect from her two masterclasses this year at
Vinexpo Asia in Hong Kong.
Can you tell us about the
importance of taste for Chinese
wine consumers?
I had a fundamental disagreement
with a past manager because I
insisted that the taste and quality
of wine matters in China. Although
China is an immature market, I am
a long term thinker. The Chinese
consumer knows quality and taste,
you can see this in the cuisine
and taste for the finer things in
life. Bringing in cheap wines that
taste poorly is disrespectful to the
consumer. It may provide short term
sales, but it is not a strategy for long
term growth, and frankly, it is not
good business.
What are your goals at Vinexpo Asia
2024?
Vinexpo Asia is an opportunity to
catch up with producers and for me
to share market news with them
and also learn about their markets
worldwide.
You are giving two masterclasses at
Vinexpo Asia this year. Do you have
a main message you hope to convey
to attendees?
The two masterclasses allow me
to share my ever-long enthusiasm
and passion for wine. This year I am
encouraging people to have another
look at Bordeaux, a region that is
making better and better wines
offering great value.
The second masterclass is a selection
of wines that I like from all over the
world matched with some canapes.
Having worked as a buyer in Hong
Kong, I would like to encourage
drinking outside of the box.
I would have loved to bring in some
sherry but could not because the
demand wasn’t there to justify the
warehousing costs
