FATHER ANTHONY’S BLESSINGS AND THOUGHTS ....
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Though I am free and belong to no one,
I have made myself a slave to everyone,
to win as many as possible…….
I have become all things to all people
so that by all possible means, I might save some.
I do all this for the sake of the Gospel..…
(1 Corinthians 9:19-23)
We are the people of the Resurrection. We are united in our risen Lord and Savior Jesus Christ because "There is one
Lord, one faith, one baptism; there is one God and Father of all, who is Lord of all, works through all and is in all." (Ephesians
4:4-9) In modern times, those who adhere to these principles are sometimes accused of being people pleasers or receive little support
because they do not take sides. However, ultimately, everything should be done for the Glory of God and the sake of the
gospel, and what is crucial, is that even in the early days of Christian history, St. Paul witnessed the unity of the Church in the
diversity of its members. This sets the church apart from a political party or a religious sect. The servant leader of the body of
Christ is not there to gain loyal followers but to adapt to the needs of all people.
As active members of our communities today, who are we leading to Christ in His one church? Let us remember the profound
importance of our role in guiding others toward the light of Christ, a mission that empowers us and gives our lives purpose.
We often hear that there are four different groups of people in the Orthodox Churches today:
1. Intentional Cradle Orthodox.
2. Incidental Cradle Orthodox.
3. Intentional Orthodox Converts.
4. Incidental Orthodox Converts.
As disciples of Christ following the principles of St. Paul, who had the mind of Christ, we are called to reach out and
serve all types of Orthodox Christians we encounter today in our communities.
We all know that Cradle Orthodox are those born into an Orthodox family and baptized as infants. Some of these children
were raised in the church and intentionally practice their faith. Some of them never attended church after their baptism or
only came to church for Christmas and Easter and do not practice the faith their parents signed them up for just because their
grandparents said it was the right thing to do.
Converts are people who grew up as non-Christians or non-Orthodox and joined the Orthodox Church as adults. However,
converts can also be Intentional or Incidental. Intentional converts are the ones who search for the meaning of life and purpose
and find direction and the way in the Orthodox Church. Incidental converts are those who have joined the Orthodox Church for
practical reasons but do not actively participate in church life or seek salvation and life through the church's sacraments.
For this reason, our pastoral approach must be adaptable to reach out to all these people in different places in their relationships
with the church and with Christ. This is why self-absorbed communities that form around like-minded small groups that
require loyalty to their principles do not grow but shrink.
These four groups are universally recognized, but some local communities have even more subgroups. The interests of
those in the four groups mentioned above do not clash because half of them care, and half do not care so much about their salvation
through the Orthodox Church. Our main pastoral goal is to serve the intentional Orthodox and, at the same time, reach out
and inspire those who are looking in from the outside and invite them to the Table of the Great Banquet and transform their lives
from incidental Orthodox to Intentional, whether they are cradle Orthodox or converts.
Next time, I will draw our attention to different divisions in a given local community that can be irreconcilable in the
absence of humility.
For now, let us remember that the only way we can save some, including ourselves, is not through strength and stubbornness
but through humility and love for one another. Remember the words of our Lord: "Love one another as I have loved you"
and again: "No one has a greater love than the one who gives his life for his brother."
Remember what Saint Paul said about saving his fellow citizens: "For I could wish that I myself were accursed from
Christ for my brethren, my countrymen according to the flesh." (Romans 9:3)"

Αγαπητοί εν Χριστώ αδελφοί,
Είμαστε οι άνθρωποι της Ανάστασης. Είμαστε ενωμένοι στον αναστημένο Κύριο και Σωτήρα μας Ιησού Χριστό γιατί
«Ένας είναι ο Κύριος, μία είναι η πίστη, ένα είναι το βάπτισμα· ένας είναι ο Θεός και Πατέρας όλων, που είναι Κύριος όλων,
εργάζεται μέσω όλων και είναι μέσα σε όλους». (Εφεσίους 4:4-9) Στη σύγχρονη εποχή, εκείνοι που τηρούν αυτές τις αρχές
κατηγορούνται μερικές φορές ότι ενεργούν για να ευχαριστούν τους ανθρώπους ή λαμβάνουν ελάχιστη υποστήριξη επειδή δεν
παίρνουν θέση. Ωστόσο, όλα πρέπει να γίνονται για τη δόξα του Θεού και για χάρη του ευαγγελίου, και αυτό που είναι κρίσιμο,
είναι ότι ακόμη και στις πρώτες μέρες της χριστιανικής ιστορίας, ο Άγιος Παύλος είδε την ενότητα της Εκκλησίας στα
πολυμορφικά μέλη της. Αυτό ξεχωρίζει την εκκλησία από ένα πολιτικό κόμμα ή μια θρησκευτική αίρεση. Ο υπηρέτης ηγέτης του
σώματος του Χριστού δεν είναι εκεί για να αποκτήσει πιστούς οπαδούς αλλά για να προσαρμοστεί στις ανάγκες όλων των
ανθρώπων.
Ως ενεργά μέλη της κοινωνίας μας σήμερα, ποιον οδηγούμε στον Χριστό και στη μία Του εκκλησία; Ας θυμηθούμε τη
βαθιά σημασία του ρόλου μας στην καθοδήγηση των άλλων προς το φως του Χριστού, μια αποστολή που μας ενδυναμώνει και
δίνει στη ζωή μας σκοπό.
Συχνά ακούμε ότι υπάρχουν τέσσερις διαφορετικές ομάδες ανθρώπων στην Ορθόδοξη Εκκλησία σήμερα:
1. Σκόπιμα Ορθόδοξοι από την Κούνια.
2. Συμπτωματικά Ορθόδοξοι από την Κούνια.
3. Σκόπιμοι Ορθόδοξοι Αλαξόπιστοι.
4. Συμπτωματικά Ορθόδοξοι Αλαξόπιστοι.
Ως μαθητές του Χριστού ακολουθώντας τις αρχές του Αγίου Παύλου, που σκεφτόνταν σαν τον Χριστό, καλούμαστε να
προσεγγίσουμε και να υπηρετήσουμε όλους τους τύπους Ορθοδόξων Χριστιανών που συναντάμε σήμερα στις κοινότητές μας.
Όλοι γνωρίζουμε ότι Ορθόδοξοι από την κούνια είναι εκείνοι που γεννήθηκαν σε μια Ορθόδοξη οικογένεια και
βαφτίστηκαν ως βρέφη. Μερικά από αυτά τα παιδιά μεγάλωσαν στην εκκλησία και ασκούν σκόπιμα την πίστη τους. Μερικοί από
αυτούς δεν πήγαν ποτέ στην εκκλησία μετά τη βάπτισή τους ή ήρθαν στην εκκλησία μόνο για τα Χριστούγεννα και το Πάσχα και
δεν ασκούν την πίστη για την οποία τους υπέγραψαν οι γονείς τους μόνο και μόνο επειδή οι παππούδες τους είπαν ότι ήταν το
σωστό.
Οι αλαξόπιστοι είναι άνθρωποι που μεγάλωσαν ως μη χριστιανοί ή μη ορθόδοξοι και εντάχθηκαν στην Ορθόδοξη
Εκκλησία ως ενήλικες. Ωστόσο, οι μετατροπές μπορεί επίσης να είναι Σκόπιμες ή Συμπτωματικές. Οι σκόπιμοι αλαξόπιστοι είναι
αυτοί που αναζητούν το νόημα της ζωής και του σκοπού και βρίσκουν την κατεύθυνση και τον τρόπο στην Ορθόδοξη Εκκλησία.
Συμπτωματικά αλαξόπιστοι είναι εκείνοι που έχουν ενταχθεί στην Ορθόδοξη Εκκλησία για πρακτικούς λόγους αλλά δεν
συμμετέχουν ενεργά στην εκκλησιαστική ζωή ή αναζητούν σωτηρία και ζωή μέσω των μυστηρίων της εκκλησίας.
Για το λόγο αυτό, η ποιμαντική μας προσέγγιση πρέπει να είναι προσαρμόσιμη ώστε να προσεγγίζει όλους αυτούς τους
ανθρώπους σε διαφορετικά μέρη στις σχέσεις τους με την εκκλησία και με τον Χριστό. Αυτός είναι ο λόγος για τον οποίο οι
αυτοαπορροφημένες κοινότητες που σχηματίζονται γύρω από μικρές ομάδες ομοϊδεατών που απαιτούν πίστη στις αρχές τους δεν
αυξάνονται αλλά συρρικνώνονται.
Αυτές οι τέσσερις ομάδες είναι παγκοσμίως αναγνωρισμένες, αλλά ορισμένες τοπικές κοινότητες έχουν ακόμη
περισσότερες υποομάδες. Τα συμφέροντα αυτών των τεσσάρων ομάδων που προαναφέρθηκαν δεν συγκρούονται γιατί οι μισοί
νοιάζονται, και οι μισοί δεν ενδιαφέρονται τόσο πολύ για τη σωτηρία τους μέσω της Ορθόδοξης Εκκλησίας. Ο κύριος
ποιμαντικός μας στόχος είναι να υπηρετήσουμε τους σκόπιμους Ορθοδόξους και, ταυτόχρονα, να προσεγγίσουμε και να
εμπνεύσουμε όσους κοιτάζουν από έξω και τους προσκαλούμε στο τραπέζι του Μεγάλου συμποσίου και να μετατρέψουμε τη ζωή
τους από συμπτωματική Ορθοδοξία σε Σκόπιμη, είτε είναι Ορθόδοξοι από την Κούνια ή είναι αλαξόπιστοι.
Την επόμενη φορά, θα επιστήσω την προσοχή μας σε διαφορετικούς διαχωρισμούς σε μια δεδομένη τοπική κοινότητα
που μπορεί να είναι ασυμβίβαστοι αν δεν υπάρχει ταπεινότητα.

Προς το παρόν, ας θυμόμαστε ότι ο μόνος τρόπος που μπορούμε να σώσουμε κάποιους, συμπεριλαμβανομένου του
εαυτού μας, δεν είναι μέσω της δύναμης και του πείσματος αλλά μέσω της ταπεινότητας και της αγάπης ο ένας για τον άλλον.
Θυμηθείτε τα λόγια του Κυρίου μας: «Αγαπάτε ο ένας τον άλλον όπως εγώ σας αγάπησα» και πάλι: «Κανείς δεν έχει
μεγαλύτερη αγάπη από εκείνον που δίνει τη ζωή του για τον αδελφό του».
Θυμηθείτε τι είπε ο Άγιος Παύλος για τη σωτηρία των συμπολιτών του: «Επειδή θα ήθελα να ήμουν εγώ ο ίδιος
αθεόφοβος από τον Χριστό για τους αδελφούς μου, τους κατά σάρκα συμπατριώτες μου». (Ρωμαίους 9:3)».

PRESIDENT’S REPORT ...
Dear Parishioners,
Christ is Risen! There have been a busy few weeks here at our Dormition
Church. First and foremost, thank you to all for contributing and
participating in what was a wonderful Great Lent, and a beautiful and
fulfilling Easter. It was so gratifying to spend this time together worshiping
and celebrating our Savior’s resurrection as a parish family.
On behalf of the Parish Council, I would like to also extend our appreciation
to Father Anthony along with the chanters for all of their tireless efforts in preparing and serving all of the
services of Great Lent, Holy Week, and Pascha! Additionally, I would like to thank everyone’s participation in the
Palm Sunday Luncheon. After a five-year hiatus, our newly renovated Dilboy Banquet Hall was once again filled
with joyous laughter. There was great food, excellent fellowship, and a good time was had by all. Immediately
following Easter Sunday, we jumped into preparing for our spring GyroFest the following weekend. The greater
Somerville community came through our doors to once again experience our Greek culture and hospitality. Many
thanks to all the volunteers, you guys rock!! A great group of people came together, and the end product was another
successful GyroFest Weekend for our Dormition Church. Kudos to all. Don’t forget our festival in September
is around the corner.
With all of the effort and work that went into helping to coordinate activities of Holy Week, Pascha followed by
GyroFest Weekend, I don’t have a lot to report on the administrative side. However, I would like to take some
time to point out a few very tangible things that have progressed over this last month. We have beautified our
grounds with flowers and mulch in preparation for spring and Easter. In order for us to further beautify the
grounds with more plants and shrubs and a beautiful green lawn, we need your assistance in raising funds to complete
this task. Our parish council members are diligently working on documenting everything for future generations.
Many thanks go out to Nicholas Lamb for taking the initiative and creating a resource center with beautiful
books in our Narthex. Please take a moment and browse through it. More updates will be given in future Koinotis
newsletters.
Please understand that the Parish Council alone cannot, nor were we ever intended, to be the sole work force for
the Parish. We have a very definite leadership role in this regard, but the reality is that there is more to do than can
competently be done by just 10 people.
I restate my previous pleas to be thoughtful now about the amount of time you can dedicate, and the types of
activities you would prefer or can assist with. The time is quickly approaching when each of you will be asked to
help, in one manner or another.
Thank you for your continuous support and may the light of the resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ
guide us and fill our lives with faith, hope and good health.

Αγαπητοί Ενορίτες,
Χριστός Ανέστη! Περάσαμε μερικές πολυάσχολες εβδομάδες εδώ στην Εκκλησία μας την Κοίμηση της
Θεοτόκου. Πρώτον και κύριον, σας ευχαριστώ όλους για τη συνεισφορά και τη συμμετοχή σας σε μια υπέροχη
Μεγάλη Σαρακοστή και ένα όμορφο και γεμάτο Πάσχα. Ήταν τόσο ευχάριστο να περάσουμε αυτόν τον χρόνο μαζί
προσκυνώντας και γιορτάζοντας την ανάσταση του Σωτήρα μας ως ενοριακή οικογένεια. Εκ μέρους του
Ενοριακού Συμβουλίου, θα ήθελα επίσης να εκφράσω την εκτίμησή μας στον πατέρα Αντώνιο μαζί με τους
ψάλτες για όλες τις ακούραστες προσπάθειές τους στην προετοιμασία και εξυπηρέτηση όλων των ακολουθιών της
Μεγάλης Τεσσαρακοστής, της Μεγάλης Εβδομάδας και του Πάσχα! Επιπλέον, θα ήθελα να ευχαριστήσω όλους
για τη συμμετοχή στο γεύμα της Κυριακής των Βαΐων. Μετά από μια πενταετία παύσης, η πρόσφατα
ανακαινισμένη αίθουσα δεξιώσεων Dilboy γέμισε για άλλη μια φορά με χαρούμενο γέλιο. Υπήρχε υπέροχο
φαγητό, εξαιρετική συντροφιά και πέρασαν όλοι καλά. Αμέσως μετά την Κυριακή του Πάσχα, ξεκινήσαμε την
προετοιμασία για το ανοιξιάτικο GyroFest το επόμενο Σαββατοκύριακο. Η ευρύτερη κοινότητα του Somerville
πέρασε και πάλι από τις πόρτες μας για να βιώσει την ελληνική μας κουλτούρα και φιλοξενία. Ευχαριστώ πολύ
όλους τους εθελοντές. Είστε εξαιρετικοί!! Μια θαυμάσια ομάδα ανθρώπων συγκεντρώθηκε και το τελικό προϊόν
ήταν άλλο ένα επιτυχημένο Σαββατοκύριακο GyroFest για την Εκκλησία της Κοίμησης. Συγχαρητήρια σε όλους.
Μην ξεχνάτε ότι το φεστιβάλ μας τον Σεπτέμβριο είναι πολύ σύντομα.
Με όλη την προσπάθεια και τη δουλειά που καταβλήθηκε για τον συντονισμό των δραστηριοτήτων της
Μεγάλης Εβδομάδας, του Πάσχα και του Σαββατοκύριακου του GyroFest, δεν έχω πολλά να αναφέρω από τη
διοικητική πλευρά. Ωστόσο, θα ήθελα να αφιερώσω λίγο χρόνο για να επισημάνω μερικά πολύ απτά πράγματα που
έχουν προχωρήσει τον τελευταίο μήνα. Έχουμε ομορφύνει τον χώρο μας με λουλούδια για την προετοιμασία για
την άνοιξη και το Πάσχα. Προκειμένου να ομορφύνουμε περαιτέρω τον χώρο με περισσότερα φυτά και θάμνους
και ένα όμορφο πράσινο γκαζόν, χρειαζόμαστε τη βοήθειά σας για να συγκεντρώσουμε χρήματα για να
ολοκληρώσουμε αυτό το έργο. Τα μέλη του ενοριακού μας συμβουλίου εργάζονται επιμελώς για να τεκμηριώσουν
τα πάντα για τις μελλοντικές γενιές. Ευχαριστούμε πολύ τον Nicholas Lamb που πήρε την πρωτοβουλία για να
δημιουργίσει ένα κέντρο πόρων με όμορφα βιβλία στον Νάρθηκά μας. Αφιερώστε λίγο χρόνο και περιηγηθείτε σε
αυτό. Περισσότερες ενημερώσεις θα δοθούν σε μελλοντικά ενημερωτικά δελτία της Κοινότητας.
Παρακαλώ κατανοήστε ότι το Ενοριακό Συμβούλιο από μόνο του δεν μπορεί, ούτε προοριζόμασταν ποτέ, να
είναι το μοναδικό εργατικό δυναμικό της Ενορίας. Έχουμε έναν πολύ σαφές ηγετικό ρόλο από αυτή την άποψη,
αλλά η πραγματικότητα είναι ότι υπάρχουν πολλά περισσότερα που πρέπει να γίνουν από αυτά που μπορούν να
γίνουν από μόλις 10 άτομα.
Επαναλαμβάνω τις προηγούμενες εκκλήσεις μου να είστε αναλογιστήτε τον χρόνο που μπορείτε να αφιερώσετε
και τους τύπους δραστηριοτήτων που θα προτιμούσατε ή μπορείτε να βοηθήσετε. Πλησιάζει γρήγορα η ώρα που
θα ζητηθεί από τον καθένα σας να βοηθήσει, με τον ένα ή τον άλλο τρόπο.
Σας ευχαριστούμε για τη συνεχή υποστήριξή σας και είθε το φως της Ανάστασης του Κυρίου και Σωτήρα μας
Ιησού Χριστού να μας καθοδηγήσει και να γεμίσει τη ζωή μας με πίστη, ελπίδα και καλή υγεία.

2024 PARISHIONER OF THE YEAR
DIANE KARAVITIS
On Sunday, April 28, 2024, we stood in awe of a remarkable individual whose journey
of service has left a mark on our community. From the moment Diane stepped
onto the Parish Council in 2004, she has been a beacon of unwavering commitment
and exemplary leadership.
Her rise through the ranks of leadership has been nothing short of inspiring. From
Vice President to Treasurer, Assistant Treasurer, and Secretary, she has led with integrity,
vision, and a deep understanding of our parish's needs. In 2019, she assumed
the mantle of President, a role she embraced with boundless passion and dedication.
But her impact extends far beyond the confines of the Parish Council chamber. She
has been a driving force behind numerous ministries and initiatives that have shaped
the fabric of our community. From their pivotal role in the Real Estate and Development
ministry since its inception in 2017 to her tireless efforts in the finance ministry,
fundraising for crucial renovation projects, being on the educational committee
and teaching Sunday School for 12 years and stewardship of our resources, her fingerprints
are etched into every facet of our church life.
Let us not forget her incredible role in our 100th-anniversary celebrations. From spearheading fundraising
endeavors to meticulously typing all the copy for the anniversary album, she poured her heart and soul into ensuring
that this milestone was celebrated with the grandeur it deserved.
But it doesn't stop there. Think back to the countless events and initiatives that have flourished under her
guidance. Festivals that brought our community together in joyous celebration, Palm Sunday Dinners steeped in
tradition, Bakaliaro dinners brimming with camaraderie, and New Year’s Eve Celebrations ringing in hope and
promise for the year ahead. And let us not overlook her tireless efforts in organizing Parishioner of the Year dinners,
ensuring that each honoree felt the warmth and appreciation of our community.
In times of major challenges, she has been a rock upon which our community could lean. When tragedy
struck with the church fire, she rolled up her sleeves and dove headfirst into coordinating cleanup efforts, navigating
the labyrinth of insurance claims to ensure the church got paid, and overseeing the meticulous process of
renovation. Her tireless advocacy ensured that our church not only recovered but emerged stronger and more resilient
than ever before.
Her selfless dedication, spanning decades of service, is a testament to her profound love for our beloved
Dormition Church. It is with deep gratitude and immense pride that we honor this individual as the Parishioner of
the Year for 2024.
And let us not forget their extraordinary contributions to our renovation fundraising efforts. Through her
dedication and strategic insight, identified the only major donor, securing a transformative $500,000 donation that
was critical in propelling our fundraising efforts forward.
So, let us join together in celebration, honoring the extraordinary achievements of this remarkable individual.
Please join us in congratulating Diane, our Parishioner of the Year, whose unwavering commitment and tireless
dedication have enriched our lives and our community in ways beyond measure. A formal celebration at Gillette

Strategic Planning Initiative 2024
“Where there is no vision, the people will perish”
(Proverbs 29:18)
The 3 Strategic Goals developed by the Strategic Planning Team and Facilitator:
Religious Education:
SMART Goal: we will research, develop, and implement a best practices and effective Religious Education
program with a comprehensive communications plan that will achieve the specified targets
within 37 months
Stewardship and Engagement Program:
SMART Goal: we will research, develop, and implement a best practices, effective youth and adult
Stewardship Ministry Engagement Program that will achieve the following “Stewardship & Engagement
Targets” within 48 months
Leadership and Compassion:
SMART Goal: we will research, develop, and implement a best practices and effective Leadership
with Compassion Program with a comprehensive communications plan that will achieve the specified
targets within 23 months
The real work begins as we commit ourselves to dedicating the necessary resources and prioritizing
our efforts to work diligently and achieve this blueprint that offers us an exciting road map to our sacred
destiny. We have also established a systematic process to assess our successes and challenges
and adjust to achieve measurable, positive results. The future of our parish’s faithful depends on how
diligently we perform this Strategic Plan as stewards of God’s many blessings.
We invite anyone interested in working on any specific Strategic Goal to volunteer and offer their
stewardship of time and talents. The more experienced and dedicated souls we have working together,
the more we can achieve. These newly constituted and expanded three Strategic Planning Implementation
Task Forces will execute and manage the tasks identified in the specific Strategic Action
Plans contained in this Strategic Plan.
