TROPARIA SUNG AFTER THE
ENTRANCE OF THE HOLY GOSPEL
Resurrectional Apolytikion
Let the heavens be glad. Let the earth rejoice
exceedingly. For the Lord has shown
strength with his arm. He trampled death by
death. He became the first-born of the dead.
Out of the belly of Hades, He has rescued
us, and to the world He has granted the
great mercy.
Apolytikion of St. Catherine
Let us praise the most auspicious bride
of Christ, the divine Katherine, protectress
of Sinai, our aid and our help. For,
she brilliantly silenced the eloquence of
the impious by the sword of the spirit,
and now, crowned as a martyr, she asks
great mercy for all.
Apolytikion of the Church
Ιn giving birth, you did preserve your
virginity; in your dormition you did not
forsake the world O Theotokos. You
were translated onto life, since you were
the Mother of life; And by your intercessions
do you redeem our souls from
death.
Kontakion
Though You went down into the tomb,
O Immortal One, yet You brought down
the dominion of Hades; and You rose as
the victor, O Christ our God; and You
called out “Rejoice” to the Myrrhbearing
women, and gave peace to Your
Apostles, O Lord who to the fallen grant
resurrection.
READING FROM THE
ACTS OF THE APOSTLES (9:32-42)
In those days, as Peter went here and there
among them all, he came down also to the
saints that lived at Lydda. There he found
a man named Aeneas, who had been bedridden
for eight years and was paralyzed.
And Peter said to him, "Aeneas, Jesus
Christ heals you; rise and make your bed."
And immediately he rose. And all the residents
of Lydda and Sharon saw him, and
they turned to the Lord. Now there was at
Joppa a disciple named Tabitha, which
means Dorcas. She was full of good works
and acts of charity. In those days she fell
sick and died; and when they had washed
her, they laid her in an upper room. Since
Lydda was near Joppa, the disciples, hearing
that Peter was there, sent two men to
him entreating him, "Please come to us
without delay." So Peter rose and went
with them. And when he had come, they
took him to the upper room. All the widows
stood beside him weeping, and showing
tunics and other garments which Dorcas
made while she was with them. But
Peter put them all outside and knelt down
and prayed; then turning to the body he
said, "Tabitha, rise." And she opened her
eyes, and when she saw Peter she sat up.
And he gave her his hand and lifted her
up. Then calling the saints and widows he
presented her alive. And it became known
throughout all Joppa, and many believed
in the Lord.
GOSPEL READING
JOHN (5:1-15)
At that time, Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep
Gate a pool, in Hebrew called Bethesda
which has five porticoes. In these lay a
multitude of invalids, blind, lame, paralyzed,
waiting for the moving of the water;
for an angel of the Lord went down at certain
seasons into the pool, and troubled the
water; whoever stepped in first after the
troubling of the water was healed of whatever
disease he had. One man was there,
who had been ill for thirty-eight years.
When Jesus saw him and knew that he had
been lying there a long time, he said to
him, "Do you want to be healed?" The sick
man answered him, "Sir, I have no man to
put me into the pool when the water is
troubled, and while I am going another
steps down before me." Jesus said to him,
"Rise, take up your pallet, and walk." And
at once the man was healed, and he took
up his pallet and walked.
Now that day was the sabbath. So the Jews
said to the man who was cured, "It is the
sabbath, it is not lawful for you to carry
your pallet." But he answered them, "The
man who healed me said to me, 'Take up
your pallet, and walk.' "They asked him,
"Who is the man who said to you, 'Take up
your pallet, and walk'?" Now the man who
had been healed did not know who it was,
for Jesus had withdrawn, as there was a
crowd in the place. Afterward, Jesus found
him in the temple, and said to him, "See,
you are well! Sin no more, that nothing
worse befall you." The man went away
and told the Jews that it was Jesus who
had healed him.
Fr. Anthony’s Thoughts about the Sunday Gospel
The Story of the Paralytic
St. John 5 (1-15)
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
This Sunday, called the Sunday of the paralytic, tells us a very sad story.
It is in a sense the story of every human being and the story of all humanity. We knew for many
centuries that we are separated from the Life-giving Source. We knew that we needed to use all our
strength to draw near to the Source of Life. We also knew that no matter how hard we try we will
not be able to get close enough to enter the healing pool. If we look at the rest of the New Testament,
we will see that this story is unique.
There are only a few occasions when Christ initiates someone’s healing. He always waits
until people come to Him with faith and conviction. This is one of the unique stories when He approaches
the suffering human being because this man was unable to come himself.
This is how it is the story of all humanity. Humans would not ever be able to enter into the
life-giving presence of God unless God entered into the life of humanity by His incarnation.
And this is how it is the story of every human being. Every one of us knows where is that
place where we can find healing and where we can find restoration, but we are badly paralyzed and
cannot move. Every day I hear about people who used to go to Church, but they do not anymore.
They have been injured somehow and have not been able to return. I see a lot of people every day
who may think that they are in communion with God because they go to Church but, they are paralyzed
and cannot move ahead and be with God.
When we find ourselves in such situation, we know we need someone else to help us to free
ourselves from our paralysis. We need someone else in our life to help us to get to the pool where
everyone has been finding healing year after year. Our paralysis is not of physical nature, however,
but it is of spiritual nature. Our Paralysis is not a result of some misfortunate accident, but it is a
self-imposed one.
One of the fathers says that getting angry at someone is like drinking poison and hoping
that this other person will die. Dear brothers and sisters, it is that poison that comes into our lives in
a form of anger, jealousy, hatred, competition, gossip, grudge, resentment, and all other vices and
paralyzes our lives. If we catch them soon enough, we can uproot them easily like weeds but if we
let them stay too long, they become like trees, with a strong root system and we need someone else
to help us to remove them.
In a case like this, when we are completely paralyzed like this man who was laying by the
pool, we need Christ to heal us.
The good news dear brothers and sisters is that Christ is always ready at the doors of our
hearts knocking and waiting until we open it and let him in to come and uproot all the weeds in the
garden of our heart and plant the seeds of the Kingdom of God.
