EVENTS & ACTIVITIES
Movie Matinee
Wednesday, Sept. 10 at 2:30 p.m.
Social Hall – $1 per person
The Social Hall has been reserved
for those who wish to see the movie
Fool’s Gold. Co-stars Kate Hudson
and Matthew McConaughey re-team
on the big screen for this adventurous
tale about a treasure-hunting couple
whose eight-year quest for the ultimate
prize has left them flat broke and
fresh out of gas. Ben “Finn” Finnegan
(McConaughey) is a treasure hunter
who has made it his mission in life to track down the Queen’s
Dowry, a legendary collection of 40 chests filled with priceless
treasure, and lost at sea in 1715. But in his single-minded quest
to track down this sizable booty, Finn has sadly neglected his
marriage to his loving wife Tess (Hudson). Tess has grown tired
of the hunt, and now she’s looking to start her life anew by
going to work on the massive yacht of globetrotting billionaire
Nigel Honeycutt (Donald Sutherland). But just as Tess begins
to relish the freedom on her new, laid-back lifestyle, Finn uses
his roughish charm to convince the adventurous baron and his
debutante daughter Gemma (Alexis Dziena) that the elusive
Spanish treasure is finally within reach. Of course no magnate
in his right mind would reject the prospect of tracking down the
most mythical treasure on the planet, and now as the hapless
Tess is forced on yet another wild goose chase, her husband’s
former mentor Moe Fitch (Ray Winstone) and a greedy local
gangster (Kevin Hart) up the stakes by joining in on the race.
Social Hall – $1 per person
The Social Hall has been
reserved for those who wish
to see the movie The Bank
Job starring Jason Statham
and Saffron Burrows, in
director Roger Donaldson’s
cinematic account of the
true-life 1971 London bank
robbery that baffled the
authorities and fascinated
the public. Terry Leather
(Statham) was a small-time car dealer who was trying
to leave his shady past behind and start a family.
Though he’d never been involved in any major crimes,
he wasn’t exactly on the straight and narrow his whole
life either. Martine Love (Burrows) is a beautiful
model from Terry’s old neighborhood who knows
that her former neighbor is no angel. When Martine
proposes a foolproof plan to rob a Baker Street bank,
Terry recognizes the danger but realizes this may be
the opportunity of a lifetime. As the operation gets
underway, the resourceful band of thieves burrows
its way into a safe-deposit vault at the Lloyds Bank in
Marylebone, quickly hitting a literal treasure trove of
cash and priceless gems. But while the crew did know
that the safe-deposit boxes contained millions in riches,
they didn’t realize that they also contained secrets that
implicated everyone from London’s most notorious
underworld gangsters to powerful government figures,
and even the Royal Family. Though the crime would
make headlines all across Britain for several days after
the fact, a government gag order eventually brought
all reporting on the case to an immediate halt. Could
it be that the most notorious bank robbers in recent
memory were actually the most innocent people
involved in this scandalous crime?

Bible Study
The Bible class will begin
again October 27 and will
meet on Monday mornings
from 10:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.
in the classroom. We will
continue to study the Hebrew
Scriptures and will also add
selections from other holy
literature including the Christian Scriptures, the Koran, etc.
Holy writings have influenced all of us and continue to affect
us to this very day. Everyone is invited to join us to study and
discuss this great motivation of human actions.
Bicycle Club
Cycling in South Florida is a pleasure given the number
of streets with clearly marked bike lanes, long stretches of
empty sidewalks and flat terrain. Cycling is a wonderful
sport for weight control and cardiovascular conditioning,
especially for those with arthritic knees, requiring low impact
activities. A good ride justifies stopping at restaurants,
ice cream parlors and other vendors of tasty treats. If you
would like to join others seeking company on medium to
long distance cycling, losing weight and getting into and
maintaining top physical conditioning, please contact Larry
Bird & Nature Club
Join others who share the desire
to explore “The Nature Around
Us.” Let this club be a wonderful
experience in which we can
continue learning in the spirit of
exploration. It has been a very
interesting adventure to date.
Our field trips thus far have been
great examples of how amazing
the nature in our area is. The Bird
& Nature Club will be taking a summer recess... Our next
meeting will be Monday, October 6 at 7:30 in the Arts &
Crafts Room. We are planning for a very exciting bus trip in
early December. For more information contact Iris Weisberg
Men’s Book Club NEW
Valencia Pointe offers something for everyone. Poker,
Mah Jongg, arts & crafts, Girl Talk, Women’s Book Club
and thats just to name a few. Now for the first time
at Valencia Pointe, a non-fiction book club just for
men. This club is chaired by two voracious readers
and intellectually curious guys Ira Raff and Steve
Tamber. We will explore the world around us using
serious literature as our guide. Our first book will be
“The Looming Tower: Al Qaeda and The Road to 9/11”
written by Lawrence Wright. This 2006 book begins
with the events of September 11, 2001. Those events
were in many ways less the start of a tale than the end
of one. It began many years before in many different
precincts: the middle-class suburbs of Cairo, the
mosques of Hamburg, Jidda, Islamabad and in the quiet
university town of Greeley, Colo. In its simplest terms,
this is the story of how a small group of men, with a
frightening mix of delusion and calculation, rose from
tormented civilization
to mount a catastrophic
assault on the world’s
mightiest power, and how
another group of men and
women, convinced that
such an attack was on the
way, tried to desperately
stop it. We will meet
Wednesday, October 29 in
the Classroom at 4 p.m.
for our first discussion.
Following the discussion,
we will pick a book for
the next meeting. All
participants are welcome
to suggest a book or books. The book to read will be
decided by the members. The person offering the
book will lead the next discussion. Contact Steve at
SITamber@aol.com or Ira at tobim9@bellsouth.net.
schools and colleges and international programs provide
marketable skills that enable 270,000 students annually to
attain successful careers, become community leaders and
live independently.We are facing a critical emergency — a
devastating gap of 30% to fund our ORT programs around
Our global network of schools and educational programs
is at risk because goods and services must be purchased
Greetings from your Total Health Systems Staff
Personal trainers are beneficial for everyone. It doesn’t matter
how experienced or conditioned you are. Personal trainers
have the knowledge to modify your routine and improve
results. A certified personal trainer can offer knowledge and
motivation and can help you reach your goals. What if your
doctor told you he could write a prescription for a medicine
that would do all of the following; lower blood pressure,
blood sugar and weight; improve cholesterol, sleep, bone
and heart health; and decrease the risk for cancer? Imagine
one prescription that could do all of those things and more.
Would you be interested? I bet most of you would. Well,
that prescription really exists. There’s just one catch: You’ll
need 30 minutes each day to take it. Yes, the “medicine”
that we’re talking about is EXERCISE. Studies linking a
physically active lifestyle to good health are numerous
and profound. The majority of Americans don’t get nearly
enough exercise. We are a sedentary nation and physicians
have been less than effective at getting patients active.
Doctors at the American College of Sports Medicine and The
American Medical Association want to make a difference
in our nation’s health. They have launched the “Exercise
is Medicine” initiative. It aims not only to raise public
awareness for a physically active lifestyle, but also to help
drive home the medical importance of exercise to physicians
and other health care workers. Physicians should be writing
