HEALTH INSURANCE
As a rule, students in a regular study program are required to have health insurance. Health insurance is
mandatory until the conclusion of the 14 th regular semester, or – at the latest – until the end of the semester
during which you reach 30 years of age. You can also receive counseling on health insurance matters from the
STUDENT COORDINATION OFFICE (see below).
For doctoral candidates there is no requirement to have health insurance. Nonetheless, private health insurance
plans are available. You can obtain information in this context from both the Coordination Office and the
International Student Counseling team.
Students from EU countries may be exempted from the German requirement to have health insurance. For this
purpose, if you have the European Health Insurance Card EHIC (former form E 111), or if you already have
statutory health insurance in your home country, please refer to
General Administrative Fee
Students on leave due to military service or alternative civilian service, as well as foreign exchange or scholarship program students
(proof of status must be submitted), do NOT have to pay the general administrative fee according to Section 2, Para. 7 of the Berlin
Higher Education Act (BerlHG).
of the administrative fee for the “Studentenwerk” are excluded as a rule. If a deferral, cancellation, reduction or waiver of this fee is
intended, enrollment is only permissible after the Semester Ticket office has responded positively to a deferral or waiver application.
Due to the low amount of the fee and the strict legal regulations, such applications can only be approved in extraordinary cases.
The final decision regarding the deferral or waiver must be submitted to the the Office of Graduate Admissions.
Exceptions to this mandatory payment are:
- guest auditors and auditors from other universities, students enrolled in more than one study program who do not pay for the ticket
at the TU Berlin;
- handicapped students who can present a medical certificate confirming that they are unable to use public transportation for this
reason;
- students on leave;
- students who reside for at least one semester outside the regular public transportation zone due to their studies (Section 2, Para. 2
of the Regulations for Social Insurance Contributions to the “Studentenwerk Berlin”/SozVO).
Applications for the exemption from the payment of the contributions or subsidies to the Semester Ticket program must be
approved by the Semester Ticket office. Application forms are available at the Semester Ticket office and any questions regarding
