BROMMA
GLOBAL SPREADERS
A Tradition Of Innovation
The World Leader
In Spreaders
Bromma has been proving its leadership in the containerhandling
field for nearly 30 years. Wherever container ships
go, there’s a very good chance you’ll see a Bromma spreader
in action. In fact, with more than 4,000 spreaders sold,
Bromma has more spreaders in service today than all our
competitors combined. Bromma spreaders perform reliably,
day after day, year after year, in the most demanding
terminals in the world. It’s this kind of performance,
proven across a wide geographic landscape and over many
years, that has made Bromma the world leader in spreaders.
What sets Bromma apart from its competitors are not minor
differences in initial purchase price – but a major difference
in lifetime value. While one spreader may look similar to
another, there are major differences between the leading
companies – in strategic design, manufacturing resources,
global reach, and philosophy of customer support.
At Bromma, you get high-performance equipment that
minimizes costly downtime. The
world of container handling is a
rugged one. Only the
toughest equipment
2
survives. Bromma equipment is built to last in the
toughest environments. It is designed for easy preventive
maintenance, to prevent downtime. Plus, it is equipped to
deliver faster fault diagnostics, so you can shorten downtime
events if they occur.
World Class Engineering
Bromma engineers focus on the long-term performance
of spreader designs. One way Bromma achieves superior
structural strength is through strategic engineering tools,
such as finite element modeling (FEM). FEM is used to
analyze stress points on the spreader and project the likely
effect of accumulated stress over time. As customers specify
higher and higher crane speeds, dynamic stress on the
spreader increases. Bromma design studies, including
buckling, vibration, and stress-related stiffening analyses,
enable our engineers to evaluate the likely long-term impact
of possible changes in spreader design.
Bromma uses sophisticated FEM techniques to study the
effect of different load combinations on the spreader
structure.
One of the important values underlying Bromma design
work is the commitment to build simple spreaders.
Designing a better spreader doesn’t necessarily mean
designing a more complicated spreader. Good design also
means easy accessibility, ease of maintenance, and
interchangeable, standardized components for a reduced
spare parts inventory.
World Class Manufacturing
Crane spreaders are subjected to repetitive, high-impact
collisions day after day. This is why the quality of materials
used, the quality of components selected, and the quality of
manufacturing techniques employed, are so important when
it comes to ensuring long-term spreader performance.
Bromma, for example, pays special attention to the materials
we use – especially premium Swedish steel, selected
based on its strength, weldability, and formability. Our
manufacturing plants also contribute to the consistency of
Bromma manufacturing. Since major spreader components
(main frame, telescopic beams, and gable ends) are
jig-built, a high degree of accuracy is ensured. Quality
stability is one goal among many in our commitment to
world-class manufacturing.
World Class Support
At Bromma, we stand behind our products with the most
extensive field service organization in the world, a complete
online spare parts program, and the industry’s most comprehensive
spreader training program. Through Bromma
University we offer two, three and four-day training events,
both on-site and off-site, for your technical and maintenance
staff. Bromma field service engineers can also
perform annual evaluations of your spreader fleet, as well as
perform scheduled preventive maintenance. Bromma has
proven itself over many years. We are a company you can
depend on.
Bromma’s BGS Spreader Program
Bromma has recently adopted a global spreader design standard,
in order to achieve a higher level of uniformity in
design and components, regardless of where a particular
Bromma spreader is manufactured. Global integration
through the new BGS product line also means considerable
improvement to certain spreaders in our line, including
weight reductions, increased lift capacity, and improved
access for easier maintenance. Design uniformity also
means cost savings for our customers, as product uniformity
will reduce spare parts stocking requirements. Various
non-standard Bromma spreaders not listed in this catalog
are still available, on a custom pricing basis.
Single-Lift
Ship-to-Shore
Spreaders
Bromma single-lift ship-to-shore telescopic spreaders are
known throughout the world for exceptional strength,
reliability, and long life. Bromma has sold nearly 4,000
telescopic spreaders through the years – most of which have
been single-lift units. This unmatched record of experience
is why downtime is usually quite low on Bromma spreaders,
and why availability rates often exceed 99%.
The Bromma SSX40 can single-lift 20' or 40' containers,
while the SSX45 can lift 45' containers as well.
Bromma spreaders have been designed and built for long,
reliable life in higher throughput environments and for
service on high-speed cranes.
Bromma ship-to-shore telescopic spreaders are feature-rich.
The SCS 2 Spreader Communications System reduces typical
spreader downtime in two ways – first, by preventing
downtime, and then by shortening downtime events when
they occur. The system prevents downtime through
improvements in the area of electrical connections (as much
as 35% of spreader downtime is electrical-related), and
shortens downtime through faster spreader fault
The spreader has the capability to retract to the 19'6"
position in the event the spreader becomes jammed in the
ship’s twenty foot cell. Positioning to the 19'6" position can
be controlled by the operator if appropriate controls are furnished
in the crane cab. All spreaders fulfill the most
demanding design criteria among DIN, FEM and British
Standard. Bromma’s TTDS Twin-Twenty Detection System
(an excellent feature for single-lift spreaders as well) and
many other structural, mechanical, hydraulic and electrical
options are available; see your Bromma representative
Twin-Lift
Ship-to-Shore
Spreaders
Twin-lift ship-to-shore telescopic spreaders have become the
most popular products in Bromma’s telescopic spreader line.
This is due to the significant improvements in productivity
that twin-lift container handling can make possible at many
terminals. Twin-lift spreaders are extremely versatile. With a
twin-lift spreader, the crane operator gains the flexibility to
lift a 45' container, a 40' container, a 20' container, or two
20' containers – all without changing the spreader.
The Bromma STS45 offers a further advantage – the ability
to laterally move two 20' containers while they are suspended
under the twistlocks. The STS45 allows the crane operator
to move two 20' containers up to 1,6 metres apart
under full load. A major benefit of the STS45 is that a
larger percentage of above-deck containers can now be
transported in twin-lift mode.
The twin-lift ship-to-shore spreader line consists of two
regular twin-lift spreaders and one separating twin-lift. The
STR40 can twin-lift two 20' containers or a single 40'
container. The STR45 can also lift 45' containers. The
STS45, as mentioned above, is a separating twin-lift
spreader, offering major advantages in terms of above-deck
container handling versatility.
Bromma designed the very first twin-lift spreader, and has
more twin-lift crane spreaders in service today than all our
competitors combined. Maintenance is cost-effective, since
Bromma’s twin-lift does not require a spare parts inventory
separate from our single-lift spreaders. Maintenance is easy,
because access to components is very good. Safety is high,
because Bromma’s singular Twin-Twenty Detection System
reads container gaps, leading to a “no go” signal under
unsafe conditions. Bromma twin-lifts are also designed to
handle irregular container loads.
Bromma spreaders are feature-rich. Our MPS memory
positioning system, available on the STS45, makes the
crane operator’s task easier, and increases productivity. They
have the capability to retract to the 19'6" position in the
event the spreader becomes jammed in the ship’s twenty
foot cell. Positioning to the 19'6" position can be controlled
by the operator if appropriate controls are furnished in the
crane cab. All spreaders fulfill the most demanding design
criteria among DIN, FEM and British Standard.
Bromma twin-lift ship-to-shore spreaders are the ideal
choice for terminals looking for high-productivity container
handling solutions.
Single-Lift Mobile
Harbour Crane
Spreaders
Wherever mobile or jib cranes are found, Bromma
spreaders can usually be found there as well. Bromma
mobile harbour cranes are renowned for their extreme
reliability. In fact, the first Bromma mobile harbour crane
spreader, built way back in 1977, is still in service today.
In all, more than 600 Bromma mobile harbour cranes are
in service today in terminals throughout the world. One
consequence of Bromma’s vast experience in mobile harbour
crane container handling is that many customers have
chosen to standardize with Bromma spreaders. This, in turn,
has enabled terminal maintenance departments to become
very familiar with the service characteristics of these
spreaders – another factor in their extremely long life and
reliability. Bromma mobile harbour crane spreaders offer
you the security of proven performance.
The single-lift mobile harbour crane spreader line consists of
two primary spreaders. The EH5 can single-lift 20' or 40'
containers, while the EH180 can lift 45' containers as well.
Both spreaders offer tower and gravity point adjustment,
so that unevenly loaded containers can be picked up
horizontally, which is especially important when loading or
unloading in the guides of the ship’s cells. A sliding tower
assembly allows the center of gravity lifting point to be
moved as needed toward each end of the spreader. These
spreaders are normally used in conjunction with Bromma’s
standard rotator. Repair and maintenance is simplified
through easy access to each component. The flexibility
designed into the telescopic system allows small changes in
spreader length when handling distorted containers.
Bromma’s six-flipper arm layout, coupled with a hydraulic
motor flipper drive, provides positive damping to allow
efficient gathering on to a container even when the spreader
is rotating. There are many available structural, mechanical,
hydraulic and electrical options; see your Bromma
representative for details.
Lightweight 40' and 45' mobile harbour crane spreaders are
also available for older cranes with limitations in terms of
allowable spreader weight. Lightweight mobile harbour
crane spreaders allow you to increase your crane’s capacity
without the expense of structurally upgrading your crane.
As such, these spreaders could substantially extend your
crane’s useful life. For customers presently using fixed-length
spreaders on their mobile harbour cranes, telescopic
lightweights are an excellent upgrade, as they increase both
container handling speed and efficiency.
Twin-Lift Mobile
Harbour Crane
Spreaders
Bromma twin-lift mobile harbour crane spreaders offer
the loading and unloading speed of twin-lift spreaders,
with the added flexibility to perform single-lift container
handling as well.
The twin-lift mobile harbour crane spreader line
consists of two primary spreaders. The EH170 extends
from 20' to 40', and can single-lift one 20' or 40'
container, or twin-lift two 20' containers. The MTR45 can
single-lift one container in the 40' or 45' position, or
twin-lift two fully loaded 32,5 tonne containers, or twin-lift
two containers with quite different loads.
Both spreaders are capable of highly eccentric gravity point
adjustment, ranging from 1,2 metres on the EH170 to 2,1
metres on the MTR45. Both spreaders can also be outfitted
with Bromma’s twin-twenty detection system, which uses a
cluster of sensors to detect a gap between containers loaded
in the ship’s cell. Bromma’s system reads a gap of 1.5 inches
or more, leading to a crane operator “no go” signal under
potentially unsafe conditions.
Bromma’s EH170 features a tower and gravity point
adjustment, while the MTR45 features a pole design and
gravity point adjustment. Both spreaders can easily handle
unevenly loaded containers in the horizontal position.
This is especially important when loading or unloading in
the guides of the ship’s cells. A sliding tower assembly allows
the center of gravity lifting point to be moved, as needed,
toward each end of the spreader. This allows the spreader to
be safely rotated without tilting or overloading. When the
container is unlocked from the spreader, the gravity point
adjustment returns automatically to the central position.
These spreaders are normally used in conjunction with
Bromma’s standard rotator.
Single-Lift
Yard Crane
Spreaders
Bromma yard crane spreaders are designed for use on
rubber tyred, rail-mounted yard cranes, or overhead bridge
cranes. Today’s yard cranes, with their higher speeds and
degrees of automation, increasingly require heavy-duty
spreaders that can absorb considerable punishment. The
benefits of a more robust design, a higher grade of materials,
and a more rugged construction, are often not visible until
a spreader has been in service for several years. Yet, over the
years Bromma yard crane spreaders have proven to offer
superior long-term value to yard crane customers.
Bromma’s single-lift yard crane spreader line consists of
two hydraulic yard crane spreaders and one all-electric yard
crane spreader.
Bromma’s hydraulic yard crane spreaders consist of the
YSX40 and YSX45 spreaders. The YSX40 extends from
20' to 40', and can single-lift 20' or 40' containers. The
YSX45 extends from 20' to 45', and can single-lift 20', 40',
There are many available structural, mechanical, hydraulic
and electrical options; see your Bromma representative
for details.
Bromma’s YSX40E is an all-electric yard crane spreader that
can single-lift 20' and 40' containers. It features a simplified
design, which means lower service and maintenance costs.
There’s no oil. There’s no oil filter. There’s less requirement
for the regular maintenance check-ups required on
hydraulic spreaders, so service intervals will be longer.
All of this means lower lifecycle costs.
The design retains the twin-beam structure, which ensures
ease of access and good protection from damage. At the
same time, its narrow gable end ensures the RTG/RMG
driver has good vision for container location. The all-electric
spreader has a much lower weight (less than 6 tonnes),
which means it can be used on cranes with a lower
Twin-Lift
Yard Crane
Spreaders
Bromma twin-lift yard crane spreaders make possible
significant improvements in landside container handling
productivity.
The Bromma YTR40 spreader can twin-lift two 20'
containers or a single 40’ container. The YTR45 spreader
can also lift 45' containers.
The innovative YTS45 spreader offers a further advantage –
the ability to laterally move two 20' containers while they
are suspended under the twistlocks. The YTS45 allows the
crane operator to move two 20' containers apart under full
load, offering major advantages in terms of container
handling versatility.
Bromma designed the very first twin-lift spreader, and has
more twin-lift crane spreaders in service today than all our
competitors combined. Bromma yard crane spreaders are
designed for use on rubber tyred or rail-mounted yard
cranes, or on overhead bridge cranes. Traditional product
advantages built into Bromma spreaders – a more robust
design, a higher grade of materials, and a more rugged
construction – are found in these twin-lift RTG spreaders as
well. Over the years, Bromma yard crane spreaders have
demonstrated that they offer superior long-term value to
yard crane customers.
Bromma twin-lift yard crane spreaders are the ideal choice
for terminals looking to maximize the productivity of their
yard operations.
HSM6 Overheight frame (Speedloader)
Bromma’s HSM6 Overheight allows crane operators to
quickly and safely handle open-top containers (with cargo
extending up to 6 feet above the corner pockets), flatracks
with overheight loads, and pallets with ISO fittings and
dimensions.
The HSM6 can be directly coupled and uncoupled to the
mother spreader through automatic spring-loaded latches
in less than 30 seconds, versus the 15 minutes typically
required for manually applied lift gear. In addition, the
overheight can be attached to the spreader by the crane
operator alone, eliminating the need for the assistance of
dockside personnel. Dock workers no longer have to climb
corner posts to attach jury rigs for top tier, above deck
flatracks. Nor do they have to climb ladders at ground
level to disassemble the jury rigs from the corner posts of
chassis-mounted flatracks.
The HSM6 consists of the frame and its storage fixture.
The Overheight attaches to the host spreader by means of
four (4) patented self-latching arms. The HSM6 is a true
slave spreader which copies the expand/retract and
lock/unlock features of the host spreader. The HSM6 is
very flexible: it is adaptable for any ship-to-shore, RTG, or
spreader-equipped lift truck application.
EH3 Rotator
Bromma’s EH3 rotator is used mainly on mobile and jib
cranes where the wire spacing is approximately 2m. For this
reason the rotating device is usually fitted to spreaders
equipped with gravity point adjustment and tower connection.
This type of spreader ensures that the container can
be adjusted into the horizontal position. The rotating device
can also be supplied with a hook so that it can handle
general cargo, and with the quick-change arrangement, it is
easily connected/disconnected to the spreader.
Handling efficiency is dependent on the lifting height and
the distance between the ropes. The EH3 rotator can be
connected to all kinds of jib cranes with rope distances
between 1,2 to 2,3 m.
The EH3 is equipped with sliprings and a motor for
unlimited rotation with a speed of between 1-5 r. p.m.
All electrics are well-protected and the hydraulic unit
(which comprises the pump, motor, tank, valves and filter)
is totally enclosed within the steel structure, ensuring
maximum protection from damage. The EH3 is fabricated
of high quality Swedish steel, giving it a high lift capacity
with a low tare weight of 1,9 - 3,6 tonnes. The structure
is designed in accordance with DIN standard 15018.
Repair and maintenance is simplified through easy access
to each component.
HEIGHT INDICATION SYSTEM
The HIS height indication system measures the distance
between the spreader and the container, and sends a
signal to the crane to decelerate, helping the crane
operator to not land too hard on the container. The
system is especially valuable when it comes to landing
in the ship cell, where it is much harder for the crane
operator to visually gauge the spreader’s distance from
the top of the container, or on jib-crane spreaders,
where the crane cab is far away from the vessel. HIS
allows the crane operator approach a container at a
suitable speed, while at the same time enabling the
crane driver to limit hard impacts.
SCS 2 SPREADER CONTROL SYSTEM
The SCS 2 system delivers advanced monitoring and
diagnostic information, which means that spreader
service staff can react faster to fault events. Instead of
investigating possible sources of fault events one by one,
the SCS 2 gives service technicians specific, precise
information – information that lets them move quickly
from investigating problems to solving them. The SCS 2
system also prevents fault events, as SCS 2
simplifies the spreader. SCS 2 eliminates or minimizes
junction boxes, terminal strips, terminal ends, relays,
and DIN rails – areas where wire breakage is common.
Conventional wiring is reduced, and what wiring
remains is heavy-duty.

TTDS TWIN-TWENTY DETECTION SYSTEM
The TTDS twin twenty detection system – the spreader
insurance policy — is a tool to avert potentially
dangerous and expensive container handling accidents.
TTDS enables a crane operator to detect a gap between
two twenty foot containers in a forty foot ship cell – a
potentially dangerous lifting situation. TTDS is also
suitable for use on single-lift spreaders and can be easily
retrofitted onto your existing spreader fleet.
