FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK
Recently, a scientist got terribly interested in the miraculous structure of water. Water
being the most receptive of the four elements, he thought would respond to non physical
events too. So he set up a series of studies, applied mental stimuli and photographed it with a
special microscope. He printed out words, taped them to the bottles of distilled water and left
them overnight; first two samples which were under the influence of ‘Chi of love’ and ‘Thank
you’ respectively were shining like gems scintillating in darkness while ‘You make me sick, I
will kill you’ which was impinging on the third sample, proved to be a grotesquerie as it was
not worth seeing. Thought and intent was the driving force behind the strange behaviour of
the molecules of water. Just imagine how our own thoughts affect the water which constitutes
more than 70% of our body. Water of this tarai belt is glistening like the first two samples,
thanks to the vibrational energy from the creative thoughts of the fertile minds of this educational
abode. Events like Spardha and Samanvay, each one being their brainchild, have
successfully transmitted a positive vibration to the otherwise non-luminous H2O molecules
lying beneath the foundation of our college.
Samanvay ’08 was special for more than one reason. With every student playing his part for
its grand success, one has a precognition that this spirit of synergism will continue to deliver
the expected outputs. Rising of the curtain for the national level sports fest Spardha has been a
remarkable one, Editorial Board, on behalf of entire college would like to thank the organizers
for their Herculean efforts to promote sports culture in our college.
The literal meaning of Techniche has been everyone’s fancy. Going beyond the explanation
that we give by bifurcating Techniche in to ‘Tech’+ ‘Niche’, I think Techniche for
College of Technology is analogous to wave-particle duality of light. It plays a dual role of
both ‘Mirror’ and ‘Thread’ by firstly reflecting the thoughts of technocrats and secondly by
unifying the students’ community.
The Central Computing Facility (CCF) has been a ‘fruit’-ion. Its mouth-watering sweetness
is more tempting than the one tasted by Eve. Don’t worry, as results will not be the same! One
now dreams of a ‘College Library’ which will provide a variety to our COT’s orchard.
On behalf of the Editorial Board, I would like to thank Dr. B. S. Bisht, the Vice- Chancellor
of our university for sparing his valuable time to share his vision with us. I would like to
express my heartfelt gratitude to Dr. M. P. Singh, Dean, College of Technology for his constant
encouragement and support. I am also grateful to Prof. D. S. Murthy, Staff Counsellor,
Engineering & Technology Society for his guidance. I am indebted to Prof. Devendra Kumar
for his lucid article on ‘Changing face of education’. A special thanks to Mr Siddharth Verma
for his contribution as well. I am overjoyed to include the students’ community in this thanks
giving as they are the real pedestal supporting this magazine.
This time the Editorial Board has tried to create another interesting issue by skilfully interweaving
both the Hindi and the English sections. I would like to thank all the members for
their endeavour to bring something new each and every time.
For inspiring those who have still not contributed for the magazine, I wish to quote Ernest
Hemingway-“In going where you have to go, and doing what you have to do, and seeing what
you have to see, you dull and blunt the instrument you write with. But I would rather have it
bent and dull and know I had to put it on the grindstone again and hammer it into shape and
put a whetstone to it, and know I had something to write about, than to have it bright and
shining and nothing to say, or smooth and well-oiled in the closet, but unused."
Bhomik Pandey

Page 4 Face 2 Face
Dr. B. S. Bisht, Vice- Chancellor of our University, in a
candid interview with College Editorial Board, outlines
his vision for the university and various areas that are
under his scrutiny.
Change is the law of nature. Since leaving this university
in 1976 and again joining it after 32 years, what changes
have you observed in the university?
It has enlarged in size and has an excellent infrastructure
with respect to experimentation, instrumentation and hostel
facilities. There is a positive change in the library and the
computing facilities. Remarkable change can be observed in
the students also. They are not only better disciplined but
also have an urge to acquire knowledge.
In your life, you have had the opportunity to walk in the
hallowed corridors of the best educational institutions.
Where does Pantnagar figure in that?
Pantnagar had been the base for all. One needs to have a
very strong background to step into better educational
institutions. Graduation from Pantnagar provided this base
to me.
The circle of life has brought you back from where you
started. What similarities do you observe in your life as a
student at first and now as the Vice- Chancellor?
Coming back to Pantnagar was just like home coming. It is
always a great feeling to meet the faculty people. I feel that
mentally, I am the same person as I was as a student. As I
walk through central roads or fields during the morning
walk, I feel the same as though I am moving on a bicycle. I
still feel like running; I was a cross-country racer.
Your current position is an exemplification for the
students who come from remote areas of the country.
How much value you regard to that struggle?
It’s quite a lot. What really helped me was an untiring effort,
not being let down by difficulties and consistently pursuing
for qualities to meet my targets. There were difficult
moments as well. But what helps in the long run is your
dedication. Life is like marathon, one has to keep running
irrespective of bad weather and difficult terrain. There were
moments of joy as well, but those I do not take as my own
achievements. It was probably god given. Like this one. But
maybe I was meant for this. This was the role given to me
by the Almighty. I feel that destiny is not simply made by
circumstances. Circumstances do help but it’s your constant
efforts that matters the most. If it’s success, one should not
be overjoyed and if it’s a failure, one should not be disheart-
FACE
ened.
Sense of responsibility of shaping the careers of
thousands of students invokes the feeling of…
Great pleasure; concern and confidence in students,
faculty, my own honesty and hard work..
What are your immediate priorities concerning the
imminent challenges being faced by the university?
University has to meet its challenges with respect to the
task assigned to it by the state government, National Agriculture
Research System, and has to fulfill the expectations
of students, farmers, workers and industries. Although
there are many difficulties, but we have to face them with a
positive attitude and I am quite confident that we can do it.
Even after 4 decades of establishment, our university is
still regarded as an agricultural university. Your views
about it.
It is because in the beginning, it was established as an
agricultural university and also it made a good name, but
people are aware of other disciplines also like veterinary,
technology, horticulture, forestry, home science, fisheries
etc. Although it may not be very popular as an engineering
college, yet those who have a little knowledge in this field
know about the college and the quality of education provided
here.
The modes of entertainment you resorted to during
your graduation years in university?
We were very much engaged in games and sports. I used to
participate in competitions like football, cross country

Face 2 Face
races, painting competitions, etc.
Pantnagar has been the harbinger of the Green Revolution.
Now there is a need of another green revolution as
highlighted by our honourable PM? What steps are you
planning to take in this regard?
I think the whole protocol has to be adopted. I’ve two
approaches in my mind. Firstly, strengthening the basic
science faculty like physics, chemistry and related disciplines
like biosciences and nano-technology. Secondly,
strengthening the application of electronics, mechanical and
information technology by making them available to the
farmers. And to achieve this, I seek the support of the
Deans, Directors, Professors, faculty members, other staff
and students.
Infrastructure glitches such as regular power cuts,
erratic water supply, do affect the morale of scientists
and students alike. What initiatives are you going to take
to improve upon this?
These things upset me too. Basically there is a need for
proper management, as in the case of electricity and water.
We can minimize the electricity consumption by careful
utilization. I have talked to the General Manager of the
Electricity Board to redesign the distribution system so that
electricity is available at the moment most required. Similarly,
there is no dearth of water here; we just need to manage
it properly. It can be done by finding viable systems like
proper design of facilities with control systems and quality
control.
What steps do you plan to take, to increase the student
exchange program with foreign universities?
Besides existing programs we have tried to come up with
new programs during the 11 th five year plan. At ICAR I
planned that myself. The strengthening phase may require
modes like introducing the concept of project work in a different
country. Courses offered in other universities can be
honoured here and can be included in your transcript. There
can be short duration visits to gain experience. Then there
can be a provision of Dual degree Programs.
In this era of globalization there is a knowledge gap regarding
IPR issues in our own university. How important
is this issue in your scheme of things?
It is important in the sense that our efforts should give us
due credits. If you have invented something you should earn
good name for it as it is your intellectual property. We
should also honour the efforts and brainpower of others; it is
very important as far as research and development is
concerned. In areas like agriculture, veterinary, horticulture,
Page 5
etc., we are doing excellent work. We would like to earn
out of these achievements. Earning includes not only the
name in the form of patents but also getting revenue out of
those by commercializing them. We would be adopting the
ICAR pattern of IPR related issues and its management.
Ultimately in future these aspects are going to be very
important.
Your message for the engineering students.
Yes, I do have a few points. Firstly, one should not
diversify too much. If you have developed your skills in a
field, try to excel in it, as there are plenty of opportunities
scattered in every line. If you are an electronics engineer,
do not aim to join the banking or the marketing sector.
Circumstances may take you there but try to be in electronics
as the society needs good electronics engineers too.
Industries are looking for the experts in developing, planning
and managing. This is just a suggestion and not a
prescription. Secondly, if you study hard right now, you
will be confident in life in future. The students’ basic work
here is to develop technical skills. Try to gain the basic and
conceptual aspects of everything you come across. One
should not waste these precious years of life.
Your vision for the university as the Vice- Chancellor.
I have four basic agendas in my mind:
1. Top level excellence on the academic front.
2. Excellence in research and development. I want this
university to be known not only for agricultural researches,
but also for engineering researches too.
3. Developing newer models, protocols and systems for
technology transfer and development in marketing, sales
and e-marketing management.
Good and clean governance, installed control systems, fair
justice to all and speedy & justified disposal of cases.
Some of the departments have shortage of faculty.
What steps are you planning to take in this regard?
This bothers me a lot too. The first step I took was to take
this matter to the state government and seek their approval
for filling those vacant positions. I think I will get approval
for at least 140 posts to be filled shortly. Still I feel there
will be a dearth of faculty as we will be looking for good
faculty. And good means above a certain level. We are
looking forward for guest lectures. Another thing is the
interlinking of top level universities by means of video
conferencing. We are also working for library up gradation
and soon we’ll have about 200 international journals and
net facility available in the university. My best wishes to
all of you.

CHANGING CHANGING FACE FACE OF OF EDUCATION EDUCATION
EDUCATION
Mentor’s Column
D
uring the alumni meet, some alumni of old batches tried walking down the memory lane reminiscing about
teachers who remained evergreen in their mind. Why do they remember them fondly even after so many years?
Probably because, they were the ones who taught them to strive for excellence, brought out their real potential
and made them believe that learning never stops.
Even today, when our alumni are in different corporate settings, the
process of teaching and learning still continues. They had teachers,
back then and now they have mentors. The true sign of a good mentor is
a productive employee. Since its inception, the University has the
system of Advisors similar to a mentor. The moot point is whether the
advisory system is working at the same level as the mentor system of
the corporate world?
Each day in life is a learning experience. It is always a good idea to exchange
views and experiences with people from varied backgrounds.
An alumni association can be a platform for various exchanges between
the college and its ex- students. It offers a mode of interaction amongst
the alumni, being the bridge between the college and the alumni. The
conference hall is never filled to its capacity during such interactions/
lectures from eminent personalities and celebrated speakers.
Placement used to be a worry for the final year students only, but now it has become a concern for students even
before they get admission to an engineering college. We all know that a resume is the first point of contact between
recruiters and a potential employee. Besides academic qualifications, extra- curricular experience in any form is a
powerful tool as skills developed through activities involving social work, volunteer work, sports, music, debates
and arts etc., can play a vital role when the time comes to apply for jobs, thus giving a candidate an edge over his/
her contemporaries in the interview process. After all, knowledge and experience gained in any form can never go
waste. Unlike academic degrees, knowledge from extra- curricular activities is not earned but learned. Extra- curricular
activities help build and foster qualities like team- work, self awareness, adaptability, leadership and most
importantly, it reveals an individuals drive to succeed and his/ her ability to face challenges head on. For a crucial
role, when it comes down to decide between equally qualified candidates, a person with good participation in extracurricular
activities has the potential to be chosen. The point of the debate could be the participation of the students
in extra- curricular activities, at the expense of academics.
Feedback from students is one of the key initiatives to improve the quality of technical education. Feedback is very
important for the teacher in particular and the college in general as the teacher can improve certain aspects of the
course. Feedback about the course is always necessary. It’s a win- win situation for the students as he or she may
become responsible for a significant change. The question for discussion is, how sincerely do students fill up their
feedback forms?
The foundation of success, regardless of your chosen field is the attitude. When a person gets a job or a promotion,
85% of the time, it is his/ her attitude and only 15% of the time because of intelligence and knowledge of specific
facts and figures. The triple Es of the attitude are: Environment, Experience and Education. Education takes many
forms. It is not just grades and a degree. It is cultivating your strength, learning and eagerness to learn and there is no
better period of time to learn different forms of education than the student life at the under- graduate level.
Dr. Devendra Kumar
Face Off Page 7
Is blaming technology, the easy way out for
the depreciating interest of students in sports?
For a long time, frayed nerves after seven hours of monotonous
and taxing schedule were soothed under the
shadow of sports. Mental strains were cast off by kicks on
the grounds and aces on the courts. This customary legacy
might have continued hitherto had laptops equipped with
LAN not crept in. Today, gazing at the 15.4” LCD screen
from the evening till the wee hours of the morning, playing
counter- strike with Sniper and Maverick is found
more exhilarating and reviving than spending some time
on the playing fields. Chess, Titans, FIFA, NBA have
emerged as more viable alternatives to sport. Technologies
like treadmills often preclude athletes from visiting the
stadium grounds.
Gurmeet Singh
II Year, Electrical Engineering
The decreasing interest in sports is a complex phenomenon
with a multitude of factors.
Most prominent is the shortage of time. 24 hours cannot
be increased and so can’t the 60 seconds of a minute. It
becomes necessary to prioritize our needs in this world of
cut throat competition. Another factor to be blamed is
technology. Men are completely entangled in this web of
technological advancements. Thousands of games are
available on just one click on the internet, presence of
cellphone compatible games like cricket, soccer and baseball
etc as well as the trend of LAN games in hostels; everybody
is just more than satisfied. Moreover it has been
observed that fans’ ability to surf sports highlights in
search of instant gratification of spectacular games or to
follow the individual athletes eventually erode loyalty to
real sports teams. Thus, it can be easily seen and felt that
technology is responsible for the depreciating interest in
university level sports.
Juhi Kulshreshtha
II Year, Computer Engineering
It would certainly be wrong to blame technology for the
depreciating interest in university level sports. A strong
attendance of students from College of Technology in
stadium proves that the interest in sports is hardly waning.
The success of Spardha, the sports fest, proves that
there is a spirit of enthusiasm all around. Sports have
got their own charm; some participate for six- pack abs,
others for proving themselves. Those who don’t get an
opportunity to participate, turn towards LAN gaming-
recall FIFA, E.A. Cricket and Cue Club. I am an avid
counter- strike player but my interest has never hindered
my daily visits to the stadium. If you don’t have
strength in your back and limbs, you can not even sit in
front of the computer for hours. Then why curse technology?
Sachin Goyal
III Year, Electrical Engineering
Blaming technology is obviously the easy way out but
the truth that meets the eye is the one that conflicts the
most. An air-conditioned hall drowned in flood lights, a
bunch of close-circuit TV cameras covering the whole
building and giving the latest updates- a proper infrastructure
is what one thinks makes a perfect sportsman
out of a mere individual. But is it this or the sheer hard
work, devotion, ability to succeed and burning desire
that make a true player? ‘Better watch a movie than
knock your feet out in the sun’-is a common deed and
hidden unworthiness of our college students. Most students
hardly ever visit the stadium. Ask the regular players,
they don’t blame technology or shy from disclosing
their weak points. It’s time we rise up to compete in
university level sports and reach the next level.
Censure, upbraid, criticize…? Guess what these traits
thrust you to think. Let you be the answer.
I
t makes a man (or woman or anybody
else) perfect. But then who
said being perfect is so much important.
What about living with imperfections
and accepting oneself for what one is (or
what one has made of oneself?). Practice
maketh a robot not human. For it prevents
the mind from exploring new mental
horizons, shunning creativity for routine
work, and defies the very purpose of living a
free life. Practice is for practical people, or
pathetic people, for that matter. The mere
practice of ‘practice’ is archaic. The practice
of ‘sati’, ‘slavery’, ‘apartheid’, all represent
derogatory reminders of history. No practice
has ever done good to anybody, or so the
argument goes. However, the practice of
‘practice’, can reap great benefits, not only
for the individual but for the world at large.
Lance Armstrong practised endurance,
John Milton did creativity, China practised
discipline, evolution itself is a result of practice,
a constant practice for survival. People
opine that genius is innate and one can only
be lucky to be born as one. However, intelligence
and speed are a matter of practice
again. ‘Practice’ and practice alone processes
one’s primary memory (the part which controls
reflexes) into its secondary form. Imagine
one’s speed or intelligence if one is able to
deal with every aspect or every facet of a
problem with the same speed and ease as
one does involuntary actions!
The National Geographic channel claims that
‘savants’ develop new neuron connections in
one part of their brain at the peril of other
areas. This renders them retarded at specific
activities while it makes them super computer
or seemingly magical in others. A
mathematical savant, for example, can cor-
THE THE P P WORD
WORD
rectly establish the day on, say, 11 th September,
1487 in less than 5 seconds. Constant
practice can bolster formation of these new
neuron connections in normal people, without
affecting other day to day attributes. This
is how intuition or gifted brains develop (even
if one is born not intelligent).
Take another example, over the years a multitude
of test taking strategies have come up
for CAT takers. These guidelines range from
adjusting accuracy to increasing speed,
proper time management and selection.
Golden rules and Conventional Formulae for
Success have emerged. Concentration building
techniques and psychological stress
busters are being marketed as commercial
packages. The ultimate fact, though remains,
that with practice, the subconscious takes
care of all these supposedly overblown
problems automatically & correct question
selection, speed and confidence, etc. develop
instinctively. Nonetheless, inspiration accounts
for a mere one percent, & efforts
towards achievement are deep dished if we
don’t start practising RIGHT AWAY!
Fear of
losing
A fear one must not fear to have…
H old
on friends! It is neither a woeful
saga of melodramatic events nor the
narration of some morbid song.
Look through the other side of the
prism, everything will be seen at an oblique angle.
Fear of losing is an emotion which lay beneath the
sundry other feelings of a human. Believe me
folks; it is an indelible fostering catalyst which
could help us to sail smoothly
through this complicated
life. It is a universal
solution to all
problems. It is the best way to
keep our success intact with us always.
Life is strange, weird and many
times harsh. Well let’s not define it and load
you with yet another descriptive version
of it. We think, we plan, and we create
and invest all the energies to achieve
things. But what goes wrong after
achieving something? Oscar winner
actor Halle Berry received the worst actor
award the very next year, she won
the Oscar. What caused the extreme
reversal?
Simple – she did not have that
fear of losing her top position. A man was going
to divorce his wife and the same day he discovered
about her cancer. He soon realized what he was
going to lose and he went into a state of eternal
grief, shame and vengeance and tore the papers at
once. He discovered the pain of losing and decided
not to lose her before the almighty would
separate them forever.
It’s difficult to scale the craggy heights to reach the
zenith but it’s rather more difficult to stay there
because the tops are always pointed, they are not
flat.
A topper who has been maintaining his legacy for
3 years suddenly topples down to the group of last
rankers of the class. If only he had that fear of
losing his position, he would have worked harder.
We often forget our killing instinct and passion
after conquering our goals and tasting the wine of
glory. Success is just a respite in this miraculous
journey of life whereby the ultimate aim is to
achieve salvation and the penultimate one is to
win material laurels viz. money and fame. It’s important
to understand that a subtle
boundary line exists between success
and failure. Fear of losing helps
you to remain in that realm
of success. Its operation
may be a bit flummoxing
but its effect is
profound.
For centuries it has
been taught that “jo dar gaya ,samjho mar
gaya”.
Recently, it was divulged that this was also
the motivational punch line for the superlucky
1983 Indian cricket team. But by the
end of this article, if you will be kind
enough to strain your eyes to read it all, I
am sure all of you will try to recreate a little
fear in your lives.
The raucous laughter I can hear,
It is free from woes and fear
People are reveling merry in life-
They are yet to face all strife
Don’t they know what life is….
Do they deem it to be a bliss !
Or is it that they know it all,
And can handle all big and small
Is there really time to now halt,
Or is there is any scope for a fault ?
TIME LOST IS A LIFE UNDONE,
It is a waste too heavy for fun.
If today I can be dedicated-
My labour of today will be heeded.
There’ll always be time to enjoy,
But why laugh now and later cry,
Better slog my way to success-
And find my way out of this abyss.
It is easier to do things I like,
But on red hot iron I’ve to strike.
If today I delay my action,
I’ll forever lose my own direction.
I’ll drift- a leaf on waters flowing,
I’ll be a dust flake in winds blowing.
People can sing in alacrity,
But their merriment is insanity.
Yield joys and realms sublime.
Don’t undo life at your own hands-
Leave your footprints on time’s sand…
IMPOSSIBLE
When crippled at the age of four, doctors said
she would never walk again. 16 years later she
didn’t walk but ran to claim the title of the fast-
est woman in the world. Her life is a shining ex-
ample of how one woman’s persistence can defy
fate and create something no less than a miracle.
From the annals of sports history, Techniche
brings to you the story of Wilma Rudolph .
W
ilma Glodean Rudolph was born on June 23, 1940 in
Clarksville, Tennessee to Ed and Blanche Rudolph.
Ed was a railroad porter and Blanche worked as a
housekeeper to wealthy white families. Wilma was the 20 th
of the child of a family of twenty-two and her family struggled
to make ends meet, even dressing their girls in flour
sacks. Since her birth, Wilma survived one illness after another:
measles, mumps, scarlet fever, chicken pox and double
pneumonia and finally, she was diagnosed with polio at
the age of 4. The doctors said that Wilma would never
walk.
But Blanche Rudolph was not the one to
relinquish. She educated Wilma at home, also having to
bring her to a hospital for blacks 50 miles from their home
twice a week and rubbing her legs 4 times a day on account
of her polio. By age 8, Wilma could walk with a leg brace.
After that, she used a special shoe to support her foot and
played basketball with her brothers every day. Three years
later, her mother came home to find her playing basketball
by herself without the special shoe. But it was only when
Wilma reached the age of 12, that she could walk normally.
It wasn’t just her mother’s determined endeavours but also
a strong faith that created this miracle. Wilma once said
“My doctors told me I would never walk again. My
mother told me I would. I believed my mother”.
In high school, Wilma decided to shed her handicap forever.
She got on the basketball team where she was spotted
by Tennessee state track and field coach, Edward S. Temple.
Being discovered by Temple was a major break for a
young athlete.
Teccomplish
The day he saw the tenth grader Wilma for the first
time, he knew he had found a natural athlete. She had
already gained some track experience too, and had set
state records in basketball. By the time she was 16, she
earned a berth on the U.S. Olympic track and field
team. She came home from the 1956 Melbourne Games
with an Olympic bronze medal in the 4 x 100-meter
relay. Wilma’s dream had finally been fulfilled.
However, it was 4 years later that Wilma
shot to life- long renown. In the 1960 Rome Olympics,
as the temperature soared 100 degrees, 80,000 spectators
jammed the Stadio Olimpico to witness Wilma run
the 100-meter dash in an impressive 11 seconds flat.
However the time was not credited as a world record
because it was wind-aided. She also won in the 200meter
dash and set a new Olympic record. After these
twin triumphs, she was being hailed throughout the
world as "the fastest woman in history." Finally, on
September 11, 1960, she combined with teammates
Martha Hudson, Lucinda Williams and Barbara Jones
to win the 400-meter relay in 44.5 seconds, setting a
world record. Thus, Wilma became the first American
woman to win 3 gold medals in the Olympics. The feeling
of accomplishment welled up inside her, three
Olympic gold medals. She knew that, it was
something nobody could ever take away from
her, ever.
Wilma’s accomplishments were not merely limited to
this. Her homecoming parade in Clarksville was the
first racially integrated event ever held in the town.

Teccomplish
And that night, the banquet the townspeople held in
her honour, was the first time in Clarksville's history
that blacks and whites had ever gathered together for
the same event. She went on to participate in protests in
the city until the segregation laws were struck down.
Wilma’s success story is incomplete without
considering her struggle. Wilma once said “The triumph
can't be had without the struggle. And
I know what struggle is. Never underestimate
the power of dreams and the influence
of the human spirit. We are all the same in
this notion. The potential for greatness lives
within each of us. Believe me, the reward is
not so great without the struggle”.
Retiring from track competition in 1962, she returned
to receive a Bachelor's degree in Education,
graduating in 1963. The same
year, she married her high school
sweetheart, Robert Eldridge, with
whom she had four children.
Wilma had achieved what seemed to
be impossible for a black, handicapped
American woman but still she had
many challenging doubts about her self
being “What do you do after you
are world famous and nineteen
or twenty and you have sat
with prime ministers, kings
and queens, the Pope? Do you
go back home and take a job? What do you
do to keep your sanity? You come back to
the real world. ”In 1967 on the invitation of Vice-
President Hubert Humphrey, Wilma participated in
"Operation Champ," an athletic outreach program for
underprivileged youth in the ghettoes of 16 major cities.
Her own non-profit organization, ‘The Wilma Rudolph
Foundation’, continued this work and provided
free coaching in a variety of sports, and academic assistance
and support as well.
Wilma’s enduring fame won her accolades
in both her life and after it. On December 2, 1980,
Tennessee State University named its indoor track after
her. She was one of the 75 women chosen for the book
I Dream a World: Portraits of Black Women Who
The triumph can't be had
without the struggle. And I
know what struggle is.
Never underestimate the
power of dreams and the influence
of the human spirit.
We are all the same in this
notion. The potential for
greatness lives within each
of us. Believe me, the reward
is not so great without the
struggle.
Changed America (1989) by Pulitzer Prize winning
photographer Brian Lanker. Within this book Rudolph
joined such company as Rosa Parks, Coretta Scott
King, Oprah Winfrey, Lena Horne, and Sarah
Vaughan.
On November 12, 1994, when at the age of 54, Wilma
died of cancer, Leroy Walker, President of the U.S.
Olympic Committee, said, "All of us recognize that this
is obviously a tremendous loss. Wilma was very much
involved with a number of Olympic programs. It's a
tragic loss. She was struck with an illness that, unfortunately,
we can't do very much about." Across Tennessee,
the state flag flew at half-staff. The same year, a
portion of U.S. Route 79 in Clarksville was named the
Wilma Rudolph Boulevard in her memory
The Women's Sports Foundation Wilma
Rudolph Courage Award is presented to a female ath-
lete who exhibits extraordinary courage in
her athletic performance, demonstrates the
ability to overcome adversity, makes significant
contributions to sports and serves as an
inspiration and role model to those who face
challenges, overcomes them and strives for
success at all levels. Jackie Joyner-Kersee
was the first athlete to be awarded this prize
in 1996.
In 1997, Governor Don Sundquist proclaimed
June 23 as Wilma Rudolph Day in
Tennessee. In 2004, the United States Postal
Service issued a 23 cent stamp in recognition
of her accomplishment. Wilma described her
motivation as-“I loved the feeling of
freedom in running, the fresh air, the feeling
that the only person I'm competing with is
me”.
Her life is a story of achieving against all the odds. Her
extra-ordinary achievements are still alive in public
consciousness and continue to inspire many young people
who look up to her. Winning is great, sure,
but if you are really going to do something
in life, the secret is learning how to lose. Nobody
goes undefeated all the time. If you
can pick up after a crushing defeat, and go
on to win again, you are going to be a champion
someday.

THEORY THEORY OF OF RELIVING
RELIVING
D.C.Pandey is a figure well known among students of our generation as the author of a popular
series of physics books for competitive examinations. Techniche caught up with him during
SAMANVAY-08. Here is the interview in which he candidly discusses the aspects of his life unknown
to us.
What were your days as a student in Pantnagar like?
As a student of COT, I have stayed in Tagore, Patel and
Chittaranjan Bhawans. I was never considered as a role
model for other students but after getting admission here,
I became even more carefree. We usually spent our days
indulging in activities that cannot be published in the
magazine (laughs a lot)
Did you struggle a lot after obtaining your degree?
When I finished my degree, it was difficult for Civil
Engineering graduates to find a job due to a downtrend in
the industry. I moved to Bareilly, unemployed, under my
brother’s shadow. I taught at a few coaching classes but
that barely gave me any independence. Soon I came to be
introduced only as the sibling of Mr. P. C. Pandey, my
brother. I realized I had lost my own identity. Overnight I
developed a zeal to work to earn a name for myself.
So how did your first book finally come through?
I struggled for many years while working on my first
book, “Problems in Physics.” When it was finally completed
I began searching for publishers. That was not a
cakewalk. Before I finally tied up with Arihant Publications,
I faced a lot of rejections. My book was brought
out in 2000, and it became an instant success in IIT study
W
e were racing down the highway at 80mph.But
just as I had started weaving an image of us,
flying low, my friend applied brakes and our
speed machine slowed down. A few meters ahead I could
see a similar car stuck abruptly in the middle of the road.
We soon figured out that the driver had tried to change
his side of the road, when he lost precision over the
clutch and his car reached a sudden halt. Soon my friend
noticed that the driver was a lady, in her early thirties.
And he shouted, “Man! Why do they let these aunties
drive?”Soon the rush increased. So did the number of
horns and the amount of noise they produced. I could
read their lips, uttering ‘Stupid lady’, ‘Darned Aunty’ and
circles and Kota. This book is still my personal favourite.
And you did not look back after that…
Tech-Achiever
Fortunately, I didn’t. Fate smiled at me. I published 10
books in a span of just 2 years. Orders used to get
placed for my books even before they could be published.
Those who had rejected me earlier came knocking
at my door. However, I declined all their offers.
After 13 books in 8 years, what keeps you going
strong?
‘Hunger for fame’ is my prime motivation. However,
my vision is to write a book to suit the needs of international
curriculum, like Resnick & Halliday. I have been
approached by some foreign publishing houses as well
What is your message to the students of COT?
I have learnt from my own experiences that there does
not exist a point of no return. Whenever you decide to
shape your life the way you want to, there’s no one
stopping you. It’s never too late to do anything and you
must never lose hope. Though you cannot deny the role
of luck, your own efforts are a must. Work hard and
relax only when you need to.
BLOWING BLOWING THE THE HORN...
HORN...
‘Why do ladies drive?’ The lady took some time to clear
the road, and soon everything was smooth and normal.
But something about this very common road incident
shook my insides. It could have happened with anyone.
But just because, there was a lady at the driving seat, the
issue became a mountain of a mole hill. Now looking at
the matter logically .The clutch doesn’t respond to gender
differences .Neither does being a male, give you the
inherent license of driving better.
We live in the 21 st century .We fight for the rights of the
weaker sects of the society, increase reservations in
IIT’S and IIM’S, and yet, when it comes to that part of

Book Review Page 15
our social structure, which forms our counterpart, we
hold same old, confined, dogmatic beliefs, like, ‘girls
don’t drive well’. Why is it that we, being barely out of
our teens, can respond to road reflexes while the lady,
who is almost a decade elder to us, and several times
more mature, finds it hard to cope with the situation.
I do not say that all females are a prey to the dogma of
preferring males over them. But what about those who
are still tied up; and at this point, I would like to appeal to
all girls reading this article. Trust yourselves. Don’t let
these narrow minded males trample over your self confidence.
Shake off the ‘handle with care’ tag, which is juxtaposed
with every female. Make your choices and bear
your own responsibility. Not just for your college or spinster
life, but for your married life too. So that when you
Afghanistan- a land, with its golden sands, sun-kissed
poppy fields and scented henna could even surpass the intoxication
of Hafez’s ghazals and Khalil’s poetry. Both of
which when put together, in their mutilated form can shatter even the strangest of hearts. Khaled Hosseini, in his
second fictional work “ A Thousand Splendid Suns”, captures the paradoxical realities of his homeland as captivatingly
as the tear jerking tale of friendship in his bestselling debut ‘The Kite Runner’.
Replete with stifled cries of broken hearts and subdued desires, the book revolves around two women- Mariam and
Laila, who by fate are bound by a bond. Mariam, who is entangled in a happy marriage with a ruthless psycho is
joined by the fifteen year old Laila. Laila, devastated by the war and bloodshed, has her own demons to fight. With
some initial reservations, the relationship between the two segues into a perfect code of mutual trust and understanding.
That love is the most pious of all emotions and prevails upon the gravest of atrocities is beautifully brought out
in the end. Hosseini, gifted as he is, in several instances, emerges as a literary genius. At one of these places he
writes-
“Like an art lover running out of a burning museum, she would grab whatever she could- a look, a whisper, a moan-
to salvage from perishing to preserve. But time is the most unforgiving of fires, and she couldn’t, in the end, save it
all…”
The book reflects the gravitas of deprived lives and wounded soul against a macabre background of roaring Kalashnikovs
and marauding fanatics. Relevant to the events of times- ‘A Thousand Splendid Suns’ is a must read for all
these who wish to visualize human fortitude at its utmost.
Well let’s try and see the importance of this phrase in our careers!
Siddharth Verma, Agricultural Engineering, Batch- 2004, is an alumnus
of the College of Technology, Pantnagar. He qualified for IIM -A
and achieved an overall score of 1430 in GRE. He is currently pursuing
his MS from the University of Illinois– Urbana Champaigne,
USA. Here he discusses his success mantra with us.
Unless you try to do something beyond what you have
already mastered, you will never grow.
— Ralph Waldo Emerson
T he allegorical phrase “(to) raise the bar” or “Raising the bar” is I
guess one of easiest and the most apparent in its meaning. It is used
to convey the idea of steadily setting the standards higher, to
achieve excellence in any field.
We all have expectations! Some of our own, some of our parents’, teachers’ and also of our friends. We constantly
try hard to fulfill these expectations and achieve our goals. But it’s not as simple as it sounds. Thousands of choices,
so many avenues, and our friends from other colleges’ usually doing something “awesome” and above all the unending
bombardment of wanted and mostly unwanted “Advice” from all quarters surely does add to the already existing
“confusion”. There is a phase in every engineering student’s life where he or she is very unsure of what to do and
what not to do, i.e. which career path to choose! Whether to opt for a job, try to bell the much dreaded CAT, wander
into still hazy territories of GRE or to slog it out for the GATE.
The solution to this big dilemma is very intrinsic. You yourself are the best judge of your abilities, potential, interests
and aptitude. Now comes the importance of the phrase “Raise the bar”. I don’t know what the reason is, but a
majority of us in Pantnagar are very pessimistic about ourselves. Initially even I felt the same. But now I feel it’s
high time we completely transform the way we think about our career choices! Most of us choose one of a Job, CAT,
GRE or GATE as our career path. With so much of competitiveness all around we just cannot risk our careers by
substantially limiting the opportunities that can be explored. A big radical change is needed in the way we think.
Why can’t we take up two out of CAT, GRE and GATE, if not all three? Their schedules are perfectly suited to be
easily prepared for! And mind you, Students all over India have been doing this. So this is not something insanely
impossible that I’m trying to suggest! Reading this will raise a certain eyebrows…..but I’ll try and dispel the doubts.
Firstly, we need to be optimistic and not think we cannot do this. If we limit our thinking and believe we cannot,
surely we will not be able to do it!
Secondly any kind of knowledge is good knowledge. The preparation for CAT and GRE is essentially same in terms
of subjects. “CAT English” and “GRE English” might be different in terms of application but at the end of the day
they both are and will be “English”. This will also help for appearing in the job interviews. Thirdly a bit of systematic
planning and smart approach is all that’s required to help you to “Raise the bar” of performance and achievements.
In today’s world everyone from HR managers, B-schools and foreign Universities are looking for people who have a
good “profile”. So if we invest our time in pursuing a sport, doing internships in our vacations and presenting papers
at different Tech-fests and conferences, we can surely go a long way in building a good “profile”. And such things
can make a huge difference in your selection in a B-school or getting a substantial scholarship from a foreign University.
So, there are a lot of things waiting to be done. Get up and get going!! And lastly it’s never too late to start!
So go ahead and “Raise your bar”.

They have will and skill, but the will
must be stronger than skill.
College of Technology, Pantnagar, witnessed its first
national level sports fest ‘SPARDHA’ this year. Participants
from various reputed colleges showcased their
talents in this extravagant fest. With a huge number of
registrations the Stevenson stadium (venue for the
sports meet) was swarmed with sports persons and excited
spectators. High level of enthusiasm and the spirit
of competition filled every nook and corner of the stadium
from 17 th to 19 th October,’08.
The football match between the Pantnagar team and
the Dwarahat team gave a perfect start to the fest.
Events became a perfect outlet for aggression, zeal and
skills for the outstanding teams. With a total of nine
various sports, participants had an enormous opportunity
to present their exceptional sporting skills.
Darwin’s theory of ‘Survival of fittest’ was seen to exist
as the best teams emerged victorious in different sports.
Excitement reached its pinnacle and adrenalin pumped
to its maximum as the teams tried to outdo each other
in contending for the winning title. The teams showed
that sport is about competing well, not winning.
The organizers did a commendable work and their perseverance
proved fruitful as the fest was a great success.
The closing ceremony comprised of prize distribution
and a mesmerizing performance by ‘Goonj’, the college
band. Spardha provided a magnificent platform for the
sportspersons to exhibit their skills and prove their mettle.
Hats off to the organizers for adding another
feather in the cap of COT.

Hard Hard response response response against against against high high tide tide
Life is a function of sin x, as it goes up, so it
goes down. That day too, was a day of heights. I was
extremely positive and confident- my 4 attempts for
qualifying the IAS exam had ended in failure, and this
was my final one. I was determined to crack it this year.
My confidence was being reflected on my parents’
faces. My eyes were glittering with anticipation, 4 failures
meant a big success this time. I was loaded with
luck- my 11 year old watch, that old black sweater, a
long streak of tika and blessings of all. While I checked
all my essentials, I flashed back into my past…
I had been a famous girl of logic in school,
which I justified by getting admission in the top technical
university in the country. But four futile attempts had
shattered me into pieces. However, my family had stood
as a pillar for me to prop. Today, my destiny hung on
the balance.
Then the approaching steps of the invigilator
brought me back to the present. Oh! What a paper- I can
do this in just half the total time. I geared up to face the
challenge. But ah! Aren’t these the same questions that
had consumed my time last year? Surely I knew them
this time…And then my negativity invaded my optimism.
My pen was moving just to move…
I came out of the examination hall, BLANK.
Last attempt gone! 5 years of life, wasted! I was so
shocked that I could not even cry. I was walking with
the crowd aimlessly. From street no.13, I went into the
underground tunnel. It was dead calm, as if time had
stopped. I won’t go home, I decided. I cannot face my
parents. But suddenly I noticed a flash of light on the
wall of the tunnel. I rushed towards the wall, to the glittering
light. Touching the light on the wall, I broke into
tears with a thundering cry. I looked around and saw the
darkness- all black! I had come back to my senses. I had
been so deep in my thoughts that I had not noticed my
cell phone slipping out of my hands and dropping down.
And now suddenly that flash of light emerging from it,
had restored me to consciousness.
One spot of light had brought me back to the
world of reason. With tears slowly running down my
cheeks, I thought about the dark, of those living in the
fear of dark. Why is the dark cursed? Why do people
fear the dark, is it because they fear the darker side of
life? But it is the dark that shows you the importance of
light.
“Life is different from a teacher. A teacher teaches
the lesson and then keeps the exam. But life keeps the
exam first, and then teaches the lesson.”
Now the dead calm meant silence to me because
my heart was smiling. Picking up my phone, I rushed to
the flight of stairs, to go back home. My parents were
standing with a curve of smile and loads of expectations.
I replied with a fake smile. There was no conversation
but thoughts were exchanged. I looked into their eyes.
They said- “It doesn’t matter whether you won or lost,
what matters is that you rose”
the paper plant at Lalkuan is perfectly expanding
its production, number of employees, profit but all at the
Biometric Fingerprint Reader
T
he CCF got up and running in no time and now it embraces
a technology (not yet implemented though!)
that’s known to all but how much do we know about
it? Biometric computerized fingerprint scanner used in
CCF and the one used in your laptop have since decades
evolved from the mainstay of spy thrillers to embodiments
of exotic technology of the real world. The purpose
of this device is simple- “Instead of, or in addition
to, a password, you need your distinctive print to gain
access.”
Human beings happen to have built-in easily accessible
unique identity cards, at our fingertips. Fingerprints
are formed due to tiny pattern of ridges and valleys
formed in our fingers through a combination of genetic
and environmental factors. The genetic
code in the DNA along with
many other factors determine the
development of skin in a foetus and
pattern of ridges in fingers. Consequently,
fingerprints are a unique
marker for a person even an identical
twin.
A fingerprint scanner’s job is to
take place of an analyst which collects
fingerprint sample and compares
it to other samples in the record.
A fingerprint reader system has
two basic jobs— it needs to get an
image of your finger, and it needs to determine whether
the pattern of ridges and valleys in this image matches
the pattern of ridges and valleys pre-scanned images.
There are number of ways to get an image of somebody’s
finger. The most common methods today are
optical scanning (the one the CCF scanner uses), and
capacitance scanning.
The heart of an optical scanner is a charge coupled
device (CCD), the same light sensor system used in camcorders
and digi- cams. A CCD is simply an array of sensitive
diodes called photosites, which generate an electrical
signal in response to light photons. Each photosite
records a pixel, a tiny dot representing the light that hit
the spot. Collectively, the light and dark pixels form an
image of the scanned finger. Typically, an analog -todigital
converter in a scanner system processes the ana-
The CCF Revolution
log electrical signal to generate a digital representation
of the image. The scanning process starts when you
place your finger on a glass plate, and a CCD camera
takes a picture. The scanner has its own light source,
typically an array of light emitting diodes to illuminate
the ridges of finger, with darker areas representing
more reflected light (the ridges of the finger) and
lighter areas representing less reflected light (the valleys
between the ridges). Before comparing the print to
stored data, the scanner processor makes sure that the
CCD has captured a clear image. It checks the average
pixel darkness, it rejects the image if it is too dark or
light, and then tries to scan again.
When the darkness level is adequate, the scanner
system goes on to check the image
definition (how sharp the fingerprint
scan is). The processor looks
at several straight lines moving
horizontally and vertically across
the image. If the fingerprint image
has good definition, a line running
perpendicular to the ridges will be
made up of alternating sections of
very dark pixels and very light pixels.
If the processor finds that the
image is crisp and properly exposed,
it proceeds to comparing
the captured fingerprints with fingerprints
on file.
Most fingerprint scanner systems compare specific
features of fingerprints called minutiae. These are
points where ridge lines end or split into two
(bifurcations). To get a match, the scanner system doesn’t
have to find an entire pattern of minutiae both in the
sample, and in the print on record. It simply has to find
a sufficient number of minutiae patterns that the two
prints have in common. The exact number varies according
to scanner programming.
So, in the future if you find yourself without your
ID in the CCF, then your index finger may come to
your rescue.
ehold your computer, your computer represents
the culmination of years of technology’s
advancements beginning with the early ideas
of Charles Babbage(1791) and eventual creation of the
first computer by German engineer Konard Zuse in
1941. Surprisingly, the high speed modern computer
sitting in front of you is fundamentally no different
from its gargantuan 30 ton ancestors which were
equipped with some 18000 vacuum tubes and 500
more compact and considerably faster in performing
their tasks, the task remains the same to manipulate
and interpret an encoding of binary
bits into a useful computation result.
In a quantum computer, the fundamental
unit of information( called a quantum bit
or qubit) is not binary but rather more
quaternary. In nature, this qubit property
arises as a direct consequence of its
adherence to the laws of quantum mechanics
which differ radically from the law of classical
physics. A qubit can exist not only in states corresponding
to the logical state 0 or 1 as in a classical bit
but also in states corresponding to a blend or superposition
of these classical states. In other words, a qubit can
exist as a zero or one or simultaneously as both 0 or 1
with a numeric coefficients representing the probability
for each state.
In a traditional computer, information is enclosed in a
series of bits and these bits are manipulated via boolean
logic gates arranged in succession to produce an end
result. Similarly, a quantum computer manipulates
qubits by executing a series of quantum gates, each a
unitary transformation acting on a qubit or pair of
qubits in applying these gates in succession. A quantum
computer can perform a complicated unitary transformation
to a set of qubits in some initial set.
Richard Feyman was among the first to recognize the
potential in quantum superposition for solving such
problems much-much faster. For example, a system of
500 qubits, which is impossible to simulate classically,
represents a quantum superposition of as many as 2500
states. Each state would be classically equivalent to a
A Quantum Leap
single list of 500 1’s and 0’s. A particular pulse of
radiowaves, for instance, whose action might ‘execute
a controlled NOT operation’ on the 100 th and 101 st
qubits, would simultaneously operate on all 2500
states. Hence, with one tick of the computer clock, a
quantum operation could compute not just on one machine
state as serial computers do but on 2500 machine
states at once.
Peter Shor, a research & computer scientist at AT&T
Bell Laboratories in New Jersey, provided such an application
by devising the first quantum computer algorithm.
Shor’s algorithm harnesses the power of
quantum superposition to rapidly factor very
large numbers in a matter of seconds.
The field of quantum information processing
has made numerous promising
advancements since its -
conception, including the building
of two and three qubit-quatum computers
capable of some simple arithmetic
and data sorting. However, a few
potentially large obstacles still remain
that prevent us from ‘Just building one’ or
more precisely building a quantum computer
that can rival today’s modern digital computers.
Among these difficulties error correction, incoherence
and hardware architecture are probably the most formidable.
Error correction is rather self explanatory but
what errors need correction? The answer is primarily
those errors that arise as a different result of incoherence
or the tendency of a quantum computer to decay
from a given quantum state into an incoherent state as it
interacts or entangles with the state of the environment.
In 1998 researchers at Los Alamos National Laboratory
and MIT led by Raymond Laflamme managed to
spread a single bit of quantum information (qubit)
across three nuclear spins in each molecule of a liquid
solution of alonine or trichloroethane molecules. They
accomplished this using techniques of nuclear magnetic
resonance (NMR). This experiment is significant
because spreading out the information actually made it
harder to corrupt. The future of computer hardware

Page 24
architecture is likely to be very different from what we
know today.
At present quantum computers and quantum information
technology remains in this pioneering stage. At
this very moment obstacles are being surmounted that
will provide the knowledge needed to trust quantum
computers up to their rightful position as the fastest
computational machines in existence. Quantum compu-
BRIDGE THE GAP
C
onnections…. Bridging the Gap:
Spending hours at CCF looking
for different civil engineering
activities across the globe, I had
no idea that this would lead me to one of my best career
experience so far.
After winning the 3rd prize at “Coloseum-08” in I-
Bridge, I was looking for an opportunity to do something,
more thrilling and more challenging. So as I
spotted the information about “Avishkar-2008”, my
mind almost felt like- Yes! I got it! It was a three day
national level technology festival organized by
MNNIT Allahabad, encompassing
an entire gamut of events that test
our technical skills, thought process,
technical knowledge as well as intellect
as aspiring engineers. Our team
including Vishal Chauhan, Nikhil
Rastogi, Alok Mishra & me (all
from IInd year Civil Engg.) registered
for the event “Connection”.
It was an on the spot event, where we had to design,
estimate and build an economical, artistic model according
to the given problem using different Aluminum
Sections.
After hard work of two nights, looking for different
types of truss bridges & their properties, we decided to
design a “through-howe truss bridge” as its strength for
a given mass is good, number of compressive members
is less and is more economical .
When our proposed design was able to clear the online
elimination round, we reached Allahabad to implement
our plan in 3-D structure. On 18 th of September we
constructed a 1.2m long, 20cm high bridge with a deck
width of 20cm. It was divided into 6 parts
(truss sections) with a 1:6 height: length
ratio. In addition to basic structure, bracings
were also provided for safety purpose.
The bridge was constructed with
the help of angle sections, T-sections, plate sections,
bolts, etc. The time limit for the event was 7 hours, out
of which we used 6 hours to finish our task.
After a full working day, we answered various queries
justifying our concept behind the constructed model in
the viva round.
Finally on 19 th September, the model was
tested as per the judgment criteria which consisted
of deflections of mid span, maximum
load carrying capacity for 15mm
deflection at mid span, economy of
construction and safety measures
adopted.
ing joint winners.
Techtonic
theoretical physics, but its future lies in the profound
effect, it will have on mankind.
Celebrating Synergy
T
he buds blossomed into flowers & the sky was embellished with stars as we prepared ourselves to greet our dynamic seniors,
who were inundated with reminiscences. At last the grand awaited day came, bringing with it the glossy shine of the past years.
SAMANVAY-2008 , the alumni meet happened to be a stupendous time for all of the alumni as well as the students of College
of Technology. The alumni were like luminaries for the college who set ablaze their alma mater with their gleaming radiance . From
the inaugural ceremony in Ratan Auditorium till the cultural nite, it was a tremendous collaboration of the energy of youth and aural
of last generation.
The inaugural session in the Ratan Auditorium gave a platform for the introductory interaction. After this ceremony the luscious
lunch was a detour towards knowing our superseniors. The joviality in the informal sessions where they shared their views and notions
about the college was worth appreciation. The branch-wise interaction came out as the most successful session of Samanvay,
where we got the opportunity to sharpen our future prospects through their experience & aspiring advice. It was a matter of conceit
to have them all with their utmost guidance.
At last the night came with its glistening shine beaming on our alumni. It seemed like a galaxy with an amalgamation of bright stars
of different colours. Then the crusade for making the night breathtaking and lambent came with the students who were all set to
catch the eyes of their seniors by their flamboyant performances ,which came after prolonged preparations and rehearsals. A
symphony of melody, talent and brilliance submerged the College of Technology in gusto and exuberance. Then the alumni rapt in
nostalgia captured the stage with their euphoria and vivacious vibes. The night took them back down the memory lane to their
college days. The culinary variations brought out a savoury dinner which came as a pertinent way for exhilaration to mark the end
of the ultimate 14 th September.
Next day was kept reserved for the alumni to visit the college and extol the change that came in the past few years in the
college. Though the day brought Samanvay to its verge, but it was ended with a trip to SIDCUL in Rudrapur and a splendid treat
from our superseniors at Black Pepper Restaurant. It was a grand memorable trip for the whole Alumni cell and for the alumni too.
That was SAMANVAY which was a symphony for us. The blessings from our alumni are to walk with us forever….
paradise, independent, yet exciting journey, where we
get to make our own decisions, choices, putting on
what we doubt and form our own opinions. Loads of
things strolling in our minds ranging from (- ∞ , ∞ )
including the first day excitement, fear of the seniors,
anxiety about classmates, roommates, bunking lectures
Robotics has always brought with it, a sense of pride for Pantnagar, with all the '1st prizes' in
almost all IITs and other engineering colleges, over the years and then landing up in the realms
of the Robot Factory of COT.
It all started two years back when our seniors Mr. Pradeep Sharma together with Mr. Dheeraj
Bisht laid the foundation of the Robotics Club. Workshops followed and so did events. A culture
of calibration, design and manufacture of Robotic Machines brought with it an army of Robotics
Enthusiasts which included, ahem, girls. Yes, it’s a fact that female engineering students around
the country lack interest in robotics, or even if they are eager, they do not go about winning
national level competitions. The male chauvinistic jinx was however broken a year ago when
two girls of robotics club, won 2nd prize in a robotics event at N.S.I.T., Delhi.
An out and out training school as it has become, the club primarily functions as an informal
body. Interactive sessions and discussions on problem statement, optimum mechanism
selection, material help for one another, practical concepts like 'H-Bridge' design for wire-less,
semi-autonomous and autonomous robots (line follower) as according to events at various technical
festivals around India, is what 'Robotics-Club' is all about. Robot Design per se is not much
of a task, at least not for the members of the 'Robotics Club' of Pantnagar. Winning prizes
though is quite a different story. For not only does it requires sheer calibration skills, but also a
basic level of confidence, team spirit and to some extent one needs to be a propagandist. For not
only is 'Robot Malfunction at the exact moment' a reality but also since one must be able to
mould the event rules to his/her benefit. Coping up with these requires attitude for one, and
experience for another. These real life situations are simulated and their solutions disseminated
to the younger members of the club by the their learned seniors. The legacy of Pantnagar Robotics
Champs still exists and will continue for years to come. Its worth mentioning that the
founder of the club, Mr. Sharma has established his own company namely- 'Robosapiens-India
Pvt. Ltd.' and members of the robotics Club are being affiliated to it. It’s just a matter of time
before COT, Pantnagar gets recognized as a robotics hub, THE WORLD OVER!!! -
IGNORANCE IGNORANCE IGNORANCE IGNORANCE IS IS IS IS STRENGTH. STRENGTH.
STRENGTH.
STRENGTH. ----George George George George Orwell, Orwell, Orwell, Orwell, 1984 1984 1984 1984
Think of the world long after now once
the mechanization is complete and irreversible.
Truly you can contemplate it, in fact visualize it
somewhere extremely close right besides you.
NO, dear don’t think of that, its blasphemy
friend.
Laws and rules without sensitivities in a
complete mechanical world will frustrate and dishearten
anybody with compassion and reason. The
purpose of rules would have no meaning. Terrorists
and revolutionaries will all be dealt alike not for
fear, but for the rules and for the whims of those
who carry the rules with them. Saw it
happening somewhere around. You did?
Don’t say that. You are living in a happy
place with each one willing to support
you.
The machines as they are would follow a
code, a code generated by the one for the
other affecting an altogether sidelined
third group, the group that would continue
to have some senses and feelings before they
actually concede. Again, you felt this way earlier.
Must be teasing, that can not happen to us or maybe
you were the lone one to feel so. The admonishing
machinery would not just restrict into probing and
hampering anything slightly out of the line, but the
efforts will all be concentrated on keeping the energy,
enthusiasm and innovation checked within a
very narrow and shrewd framework of articles and
provisions, using power, influence and probations.
Now that’s strikingly similar to something at an
alarming proximity, yet believe me I am talking of
days to come, of years to come long way from now.
Ever debated free will, machines won’t let you do
that for no free will would exist in a reign of coded
binary rules.
Laws and rules without
sensitivities in a
complete mechanical
world will frustrate
and dishearten anybody
with compassion
and reason.
You either follow the dictates however incomprehensible
and senseless they are or be doomed to
face the furry of pitiless, unfeeling and unforgiving
beings.
They the machines would have strength, no doubt
but you need a human body to be reasonable. The
stuffing of files can not bring the warmth and affection
for the innocent child, it can just create a
world in black and white. There’s no reason to
expect human like concerns from those who do
not know what being human is…Fine guys, why
should we worry? This is just a fiction, a fiction
from a bewildered thinker. Believe me there’s no
truth to it I am just imagining, like some
of you.
I promise any such effort towards
a programmed world is being strongly
curbed by rulers with tough hands.
They don’t allow any emotion, any
opinion, any consideration to come
there way; thus awaking those who
have a heavy soft side. They certainly
are keeping the softer feelings alive using the
hardest method possible. The pains towards
maintaining, what they suppose are the model
relations between the ruler and the reigned are at
full pitch on there part.
I am certain the world of my imagination
when it exists will not exist for long. The actions
of our present rulers will chuck it off
right from the roots.
Credit shall lie with those who believe in
spirit, heart and empathy and they will
certainly help the administration in there
unknown divine intent.
Five...ten...fifteen...twenty
Zombies and headless chickens
Waiting at the bathroom door
Really sickens….
Get stuffed like a hog
Be kicked into the bus like a dog
Yawning in the lecture halls
Sleepy eyelids always fall….
An array of variables transmitting overheard
Everything evaporates from the brain which is dead
And here comes a change in your life
With the aroma of pepper and chilli
You see, hear, and feel it
And eventually gulp it down.
Trudging & tumbling you find yourself
Heading towards the wildlife zone
Whistling away the unused time
ENRICHING EXPERIENCES
Which though unused ,never seems to shrink…
Holding conferences in those private cells
Something fishy always smell
Talk about guys, food and sometimes….
A heavy dose of aphrodisiac pills
Meet those eyes
Sometimes snobbish, and sometimes…
Twinkling with cynical smiles
And with your overwhelming ,
Rather obnoxious style,
You are stumped to be a wet sock
Sleep no more!!!
Cause this life is too short
You are darned if
Gossips you hear not
No worries and no care
Touch your book & don’t you dare
interaction, promotion of mentorship, fun, laughter and joy, get together had it all, from
tashni dances to melodious marvels, from humorous plays to innocent poems. Yup! This was one
big event.
Due to repair work at Gandhi Hall, the annual Fresher’s day could not be organized. Instead G.T.s were organized
by respective branch chapters with the same objective of interaction and exposure. It all started with
the auditions; the fact that auditions were to be taken entirely by our seniors sent shivers and chills down our
spines. I and my friends at Nehru Bhawan had presumed the entire meet to be a rough one. But finding our
seniors extremely supporting and cheerful, we were relieved, refreshed and jubilated. Final year seniors
graced the occasion with their guiding experience. Our seniors painstakingly took out their precious time and
helped us for the grand performance. Solo dances, group skit, individual performances of poems, jokes etc.
ensured a maximum participation from our side. Our hard work yielded fruits of joy as the event came out
with flying colours. The event was graced by our Vice Chancellor, Dr. B. S. Bisht, Dean, College of Technology,
Dr. M. P. Singh and other dignitaries.
Lots of applause, hooting, fun, cheering, etc. enthralled the audience. Lively performances filled the atmosphere
with an electrifying energy. At the end of the day, TASHAN and JASHAN put a mark upon our hearts
which we are going to cherish forever.
THE PRETENDERS
Page 35
Final Year, Electrical Engineering
H
aven’t we started living in an illusion or has the illusion come to life? Everyone pretends to be someone
else and the real self is lost in the abyss of this make-believe world. The shallow pleasure- seekers
pretend to be intellectuals while the intellectuals pretend to have found out the meaning of life and to
have transgressed to the next level of being. The rest of us, who aren’t lost in the fluidity of the pseudo- being are
cast in the rigid prejudices of the extreme type. Terrorist attacks by which the world today is plagued have proved
top be a double-edged sword; not only have they resulted in the loss of precious lives, but have also made us
retreat further into our protective shells of close- knit society of similar individuals. Everyone is typecast into a
certain category- the shallow teenagers, the young activists, the brooding intellectuals, the glamorous dolls, the
simple- minded, middle- aged, middle- class people, etc, etc. If you don’t fit into a category, you are looked upon
at with suspicion. Life really is hard for those who are the least bit different- the conservatives shun them with an
intensity reserved for ‘such kind’, while the pseudo- liberals strut around with them like with a prize trophy that
declares their liberalism.
So, in case you are one of those unfortunately depressed people, who believe that their life is hollow for the lack of
any special talents- there’s good news: you are not quite so unfortunate, turns out the worth of a genuine soul, an
individual’s independent soul, is worth more than any multitudes of talent. Final moral- ‘you being your genuine
self make the world a better place, than you pretending to be someone else’.
Now if you have been reading this article pretending to sympathize with the idea behind it, don’t worry, Yours
truly, began writing it with quite a different plan, but ended up pretending that she has some idea what she is
talking about.
