architecture is likely to be very different from what we
know today.
At present quantum computers and quantum information
technology remains in this pioneering stage. At
this very moment obstacles are being surmounted that
will provide the knowledge needed to trust quantum
computers up to their rightful position as the fastest
computational machines in existence. Quantum compu-
BRIDGE THE GAP
C
onnections…. Bridging the Gap:
Spending hours at CCF looking
for different civil engineering
activities across the globe, I had
no idea that this would lead me to one of my best career
experience so far.
After winning the 3rd prize at “Coloseum-08” in I-
Bridge, I was looking for an opportunity to do something,
more thrilling and more challenging. So as I
spotted the information about “Avishkar-2008”, my
mind almost felt like- Yes! I got it! It was a three day
national level technology festival organized by
MNNIT Allahabad, encompassing
an entire gamut of events that test
our technical skills, thought process,
technical knowledge as well as intellect
as aspiring engineers. Our team
including Vishal Chauhan, Nikhil
Rastogi, Alok Mishra & me (all
from IInd year Civil Engg.) registered
for the event “Connection”.
It was an on the spot event, where we had to design,
estimate and build an economical, artistic model according
to the given problem using different Aluminum
Sections.
After hard work of two nights, looking for different
types of truss bridges & their properties, we decided to
design a “through-howe truss bridge” as its strength for
a given mass is good, number of compressive members
is less and is more economical .
When our proposed design was able to clear the online
elimination round, we reached Allahabad to implement
our plan in 3-D structure. On 18 th of September we
constructed a 1.2m long, 20cm high bridge with a deck
width of 20cm. It was divided into 6 parts
(truss sections) with a 1:6 height: length
ratio. In addition to basic structure, bracings
were also provided for safety purpose.
The bridge was constructed with
the help of angle sections, T-sections, plate sections,
bolts, etc. The time limit for the event was 7 hours, out
of which we used 6 hours to finish our task.
After a full working day, we answered various queries
justifying our concept behind the constructed model in
the viva round.
Finally on 19 th September, the model was
tested as per the judgment criteria which consisted
of deflections of mid span, maximum
load carrying capacity for 15mm
deflection at mid span, economy of
construction and safety measures
adopted.
ing joint winners.
Techtonic
ters have their origins in highly specialized field of
theoretical physics, but its future lies in the profound
effect, it will have on mankind.
Finally our hard work paid off as
we found ourselves as the runner up
of event with IIT K & MNNIT be-
I congratulated my teammates for the success and
would like to thank my H.O.D. Dr. P.S. Maher, Dr.
Hansraj & Dr. Virendra Kumar for their encouragement
& support.
I hope this achievement will generate a zeal among the
students for even better performances.
