I was extremely positive and confident- my 4 attempts for qualifying the IAS exam had ended in failure, and this was my final one. I was determined to crack it this year. My confidence was being reflected on my parents’ faces. My eyes were glittering with anticipation, 4 failures meant a big success this time. I was loaded with luck- my 11 year old watch, that old black sweater, a long streak of tika and blessings of all. While I checked all my essentials, I flashed back into my past… I had been a famous girl of logic in school, which I justified by getting admission in the top technical university in the country. But four futile attempts had shattered me into pieces. However, my family had stood as a pillar for me to prop. Today, my destiny hung on the balance. Then the approaching steps of the invigilator brought me back to the present. Oh! What a paper- I can do this in just half the total time. I geared up to face the challenge. But ah! Aren’t these the same questions that had consumed my time last year? Surely I knew them this time…And then my negativity invaded my optimism. My pen was moving just to move… I came out of the examination hall, BLANK. Last attempt gone! 5 years of life, wasted! I was so shocked that I could not even cry. I was walking with the crowd aimlessly. From street no.13, I went into the underground tunnel. It was dead calm, as if time had stopped. I won’t go home, I decided. I cannot face my parents. But suddenly I noticed a flash of light on the wall of the tunnel. I rushed towards the wall, to the glittering light. Touching the light on the wall, I broke into tears with a thundering cry. I looked around and saw the darkness- all black! I had come back to my senses. I had been so deep in my thoughts that I had not noticed my cell phone slipping out of my hands and dropping down. And now suddenly that flash of light emerging from it, had restored me to consciousness. One spot of light had brought me back to the world of reason. With tears slowly running down my cheeks, I thought about the dark, of those living in the fear of dark. Why is the dark cursed? Why do people fear the dark, is it because they fear the darker side of life? But it is the dark that shows you the importance of light. “Life is different from a teacher. A teacher teaches the lesson and then keeps the exam. But life keeps the exam first, and then teaches the lesson.” Now the dead calm meant silence to me because my heart was smiling. Picking up my phone, I rushed to the flight of stairs, to go back home. My parents were standing with a curve of smile and loads of expectations. I replied with a fake smile. There was no conversation but thoughts were exchanged. I looked into their eyes. A perfect view is when a person travels a 5 km path from Nagla to Haldwani on Nainital-Bareilly highway. Certainly, the paper plant at Lalkuan is perfectly expanding its production, number of employees, profit but all at the cost of increasing air, water and soil pollution at more than 100% rate. Therefore, there is a need to adapt more holistic approach to include both the human safety and environment protection & it is to be fully integrated into all business models. It is the responsibility of employers to demonstrate by vision or through actions that the sustainability is not in conflict with the business and it’s truly a win-win for everyone.
