Abhyudaya Receives Global Recognition
Abhyudaya, conceptualized and
guided by Dr. Manesh Shrikant
Hon. Dean, has received global
recognition. GMAC MET Fund
2012 has awarded SPJIMR for its pedagogic
innovation in the Ideas to Innovation (i2i) challenge.
Abhyudaya is the big idea to solve Big Problem. It is
preparing socially sensitive business leaders through
experiential learning. It is an attempt towards
character-building of the future leaders who learn the
process of mentoring and get firsthand experience in
social dynamics of urban poverty. This 'Big Idea'can be
replicated by other B-Schools globally.
From the twenty-five proposals submitted from seven
countries, GMAC awarded 12 ideas for futuristic
management education. SPJIMR's Abhyudaya is the
only awardee from India. The grant of US$ 1,63,000
is for three years to support and strengthen the
teaching-learning process.
The Graduate Management Admission Council
(GMAC) is a nonprofit educational organization of
leading graduate business schools and owner of the
Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT), taken
by more than 5,400 graduates for business and
management programs worldwide.
The GMAC Management Education for Tomorrow
(MET) fund has awarded more than US$7.1 million in
grants to 12 organizations across six countries in the
second round of its Ideas to Innovation (i2i) challenge.
In total, 17 of the 20 winning i2i concepts were
announced in January 2011. The grantees include
business schools and organizations in the U.S.A,
Canada, Spain, Italy, India and Botswana.
together The i2i Challenge was created and managed by
the GMAC's MET Fund, a US$10 million initiative to
advance business education around the world. David
A. Wilson, President and CEO of GMAC said; “The
power of these grants is in the implementation of
ideas that can reshape and revitalize management
education worldwide and acknowledge the critical role
that management education plays in training and
development of business leaders who can have global
impact.” Leadership is an act of influencing others to
achieve results. As a part of curriculum, Abhyudaya is
the innovation that infuses leadership qualities in all
MBA participants. In order to develop a socially
responsive behavior, it is very important to nurture right
attitudes by sensitizing participants to prevailing
economic conditions, moral dilemmas and
unstructured environment.
Launched in June 2008, Abhyudaya is a 1.5 credit
program for the first year PGDM participants wherein
each participant mentors one underprivileged child.
SPJIMR is the first B-school in India to launch a
mentorship program where the participants mentor
children adopted on one to one basis through out the
year.
As a part of the initiative, potential and deserving
children from the lower socio-economic section,
mainly from BMC and aided schools are identified and
supported. The attempt is to play the role of a catalyst
in providing financial and other support so that the
children are able to realize their full potential.
Abhyudaya aims at reinforcing the strengths of these
children and equip them to compete with the best in
society.

Historically SPJIMR has been successful at the
universities such as University of Oxford and Harvard
Experiences of Chirag Heda, PGP participant
As the symposium brings together the ‘Leaders of
Tomorrow’ (Students selected from the essay
Leaders of Today (Leaders from fields of Politics,
Business, Environment, Psychology, Economics etc.), it
forms a platform for enriching discussions and
debates. Some of my key experiences/ learnings
include -
Development
of a Comprehensive Thought Process
Since the symposium brings together students and
experts from of fields of business, politics,
psychology, energy, economics etc. it has made me
aware of looking at the same problem through
different lenses and taking baby steps in the right
direction.
several Indians and B-school students in particular,
are not willing to adopt. As cliché as it may sound,
I truly understood the statement – With great risks
come great returns – through dozens of success
Appreciating
The Symposium formed an ideal environment to
understand and appreciate viewpoints on the same
issue from different nationalities. Climate change and
Euro Zone crisis were 2 instances in this symposium.
Further the environment also brought about an
significant effect on business
average 20 months.
The orientation program for the batch was held on
15th of June to welcome the participants. It was an
beyond classroom activities that they would perform as
a part of this program.
The event was inaugurated by the Hon. Dean SPJIMR,
Dr. M.L. Shrikant with lighting of the lamp followed by
prayer. Dr. Sesha Iyer, Director SPJIMR, talked about
97
excitement and enthusiasm of the participants was
quite evident from the range of queries raised.
Dr. Shrikant stressed upon the need for continuous
innovations in the approach to teaching learning which
has been the distinguishing feature at SPJIMR.
Dr. Shrikant along with other faculty members later
interacted with the participants over an informal
breakfast post the formal program.
One of the key highlights of the 2012-14 batch
commencement was introduction of a 5 days Yoga
Training Program which was well received by the batch.

Gita Shibir
There is always a unique feature that separates a good
management institute from the rest. One such feature
of SPJIMR is learning of the self-management concepts
with the excerpts from Bhagwad Gita. As one becomes
a part of the corporate rat race once they enter into a
new job, these learning help each individual to
manage his/her professional life.
Hon. Dean Dr. Manesh Srikant explained the need of
understanding these concepts for becoming
successful leaders, better managers and focus on
value based growth.
Gita Shibir makes student realize the importance of
Emotional Quotient(EQ) in their lives. Most of the times
there is too much focus on Intelligence Quotient but to
be an effective and successful manager requires a
balance of both.
The Shibir teaches the core concepts of spirituality
which are applicable to humanity at large, irrespective
of religion, caste, creed, language, country or any
other differences and these spiritual concepts make a
good logical sense. We relate success only with
external achievements such as wealth, power, name,
and fame but in the process neglect the inner
happiness. Inner happiness comes with emotional
maturity which include values such as kindness,
compassion, honesty, ability to forgive others, charity,
etc.
PGPM classes go overdrive on Guest
lectures
PGPM is a 11-month full-time
residential program
accredited by AMBA, UK
targeted at individuals with at
least 5 years of work
experience in the corporate
sector. The 2012 batch has
strength of 101 including an
Olympian, an army veteran,
patent holder and a wine
professional. With an average
experience of 7 years, the
participants of the PGPM at SPJIMR are certainly a
group of experienced professionals with the diverse
knowledge from across various industries e.g. FMCG,
BFSI, Telecom, Automobile etc.
’Guest lectures’ as they are popularly known in
B-school parlance pertain to industry leaders coming
over to the institute to address participants on a myriad
of topics. The PGPM batch of 2012 has really raised the
bar high for the amount of interaction with the industry
and keeping themselves updated through guest
lectures. In a span of 4 months they have been
understanding these concepts
in more depth, endowed
participants with many pearls of
knowledge and wisdom. His
witty style and great quotes
endeared him to all. Swamiji
spoke about managing mind and managing
relationships which become essential as we move
ahead in professional life.
One of the learning was that managing the mind is
about managing the feelings of attachment and
aversion. One needs to develop Equanimity, the ability
to keep composure in variety of situations. Every
relationship should be valued, nurtured and nourished.
In any relationship, think what we can do for others and
not what others can do for you. Swamiji asked the
participants to understand that 'Happiness is what we
are and not what we have'. Our actions are totally in
our control, but the outcome is not. So it is important
that we judge ourselves based on our efforts and not
based on the outcome. This enable us to take both
success and failure with humility which in turn help
reduce stress, induce relaxation and happiness.
This unique course teaches and prepares the
participants to consider different aspects while making
decisions in corporate world and in Life. It is this feature
more than anything that makes the SPJIMR students
stand out in the management world.
addressed by more than 35 industry leaders from
diverse sectors. Ernst and Young, Loreal, Bloomberg,
HUL, Harley Davisdon, SAP labs are few companies
from the list.
The batch also had an interaction with the leader of an
NGO called Magic Bus. Interactions with the Social
organizations, provide a different line of thought for
the participants and help them adapt to the evolving
organizational structure across various corporate
sectors.
Guest Lectures facilitate the way to understand and
know the latest market trends in various industries and
gain true insights into the corporate world.

30 Days in September – a GASP '12 presentation
This year GASP staged thought provoking, powerful
play, “30 Days in September” written by Mahesh
Dattani. It is a tale of breaking the shackles of the past,
between a stricken daughter and a mutely suffering
mother, highlighting the grave issue of incest and its
severe consequences. The play took the audience on a
journey of self discovery as one watched the two
women burdened by their pain and pathos, breaking
free to confront the horrors of their past. Whether love
can conquer anguish and hurt, or would it get lost in
the wilderness of a dirty world – was the principal
theme of the play. GASP '12 had the honour of having
one of the stalwarts in theatre, Mr. Joy Sengupta as the
9
Feb 9, 2012
Chief Guest. He had portrayed the role of “Deepak” in
an impeccable fashion, in the same play directed by
Lilette Dubey, which is currently running shows
nationwide. The play received wide applause and
immense appreciation from the faculty members,
students, and alumni alike. Culmination of a massive
effort that started 6 months ago, GASP '12 lived upto its
legacy. The team comprised of a 2 member direction
team, 4 lead actors and other members to support
Production, Creative & Marketing, Logistics etc. The
event organization was a great management lesson in
itself.

An year of SPEED
Pharmaceuticals is a fiercely competitive and dynamic
market in India. Sun Pharmaceuticals - India's leading
drug maker by market capitalization, undertook a
major transformational initiative a year ago (May
2011) under the leadership of its top management
consisting of Chairman Dilip Shanghavi, CEO Kal
Sundaram and VP Azhar Khan. This initiative called
SPEED (Sun Pharmaceuticals Executive Education and
different functions and locations of Sun Pharma who
attended classes for 5 days at a stretch every quarter
and learn the rules and tools of managing different
functions.
Like other programs in Executive Education, this
program too is based on long term partnership
between the company and the Institute to bring about
transformation and enhancement of managerial
bandwidth within the company.
To commemorate one year of SPEED, a cake cutting
ceremony was organized on May 9, 2012. On this
occasion, Ms Bharati Nadkarni, DGM - Intellectual
Property, said “Going back to school could be scary
but the past one year has been a blessing. We have
learnt a lot in our courses – what we always wanted to
know but could not. Now we can read the newspaper
in a more intelligent and discerning manner. We feel
re-oriented towards learning new things which should
be an integral part of our lives. We certainly are better
managers today than we were a year ago. We deal
with our people better. Lots of values have come in and
people we have met have inspired us. SPJIMR is an
important experience and memory for all of us.” Over
the integrity and character of its
employees. The responsibility
platform to know our own colleagues better. In terms of
courses studied, People and Performance is of great
help. I have consciously tried to implement the theme
“Creating a Performing Team” at my workplace and
have observed a change in my own behavior as well as
that of my teammates. We are doubly benefitted in
terms of our own learning and replicating it with our
own colleagues.”
Stressing the importance of professional development
and talking on this occasion, Dr. Sesha Iyer, Director of
which would certainly assist me in achieving higher
organizational goals.”
Minu Singh, Nuvia India – “I am Operations
Pankaj Shrivastava, Gammon
India Ltd - “I created a Model Site.
During the program itself, I started
implementing the concepts I learnt
in “People and Performance”
subject. We developed a system of
communication and motivation on
my site. In a short span, we
developed a young team taking individual
responsibility for the Project work. We developed a site
culture under which all employees take initiative and
follow up. Subsequently we participated in three
national level competitions in the industry, secured
valuable place and made our company proud. Our
company had declared this site as one of the model site
of the company.”
Ashish Gupta, Gammon India Ltd
- “I became a General Manager. I
recall one of the interactions in the
class that the program will help in
‘becoming General Manager in your
organization’. Now, at the end of
the journey I can definitely say that I
am now not only designated as
General Manager in my company,
the program helped me in
performing in true sense as ‘General Manager’. For
me the journey of renewed habit of learning has begun
and will continue for my life.”

Dr. Nirupam Bajpai, Director of the Columbia Global
Centers (South Asia) & Senior Development Advisor at
the Earth Institute at Columbia University (New York)
visited the Institute on 18th May, 2012. Member of the
United Nations Millenium Project, Dr. Bajpai
addressed the PGCDM and PGPM batches on “India's
Decade of Development”. He spoke about the
development of India – looking back at the last 10
years and looking forward to the next 20 years, giving
special emphasis to “scaling up services in Rural
India”.
June 16, 2012
Taking a step forward for the Centre for
Education in Development Sector
The second batch for Post Graduate Certificate in
Development Management (PGCDM) was launched
on 16th June 2012 at SPJIMR. 20 participants from
7 different NGOs, Corporate CSR and Social
Entrepreneurs enrolled for the batch. Program
Officers, Asst. Coordinators, Managers, CSR Sponsor
Relations Managers etc. from Aditya Birla Group,
Lupin Pharma, BPCL, Aseema Charitable trust, Child
Fund India and BAIF were among the participants.
The launch of this 18-month executive program held
for the middle managers in Development sector was a
great success. SPJIMR, along with BAIF, joined hands in
providing the management inputs and making it
relevant to participants’ work.
Contact 1 of Batch 2 ended on a positive note with a
lot of enthusiasm from the participants. One of the
participants expressed: “teaching at SPJIMR adds a
human touch and the faculty helps us to understand
SPJIMR's Abhyudaya appreciated by a
Foreign Visitor
Mr. Ben Schiller, a journalist from New York, visited
SPJIMR to get a better understanding of management
education. During his visit, he got acquainted with
Abhyudaya to write about the award-winning
innovation. He interacted with the 10th std. children
adopted through the program (known as “Sitaras”) &
some PGDM participants who were mentors to the
children, and also paid visit to the homes of some
Abhyudaya Sitaras. He tried his best to capture the
essence of the program and connect it with the
management learning of the PGDM students.
Mr. Schiller went on to cover the program in one of his
articles.
Ben Schiller with Abhudaya team & sitaras
Excerpts from the article “To Combat The
“Arrogance Problem,” An Indian B-School
sends students To slums by Ben Schiller
“Accused of being part of financial problems and a
decline in morals, one Indian MBA program is taking
action, requiring its students to spend significant time in
India's slums, working with children.”
“To counter the arrogance problem, S.P. Jain has done
something unusual. Rather than pandering to students'
whims, it has started requiring them to think about
other people-specifically, to spend time in the poorest
parts of the city. Every second weekend, the 240-strong
MBA batch has to put aside at least two to three hours
to mentor school children, helping them with their
homework, talking through their problems, and giving
advice about careers and cleanliness.”

Ehsaas-2012
Special Children, Special Abilities. 'Special' because
these extraordinary children stand against all the odds
to make their way to a cheerful life. And to applaud
these 'special' children, the DOCC Committee
organized Ehsaas-2012, to celebrate the spirit of more
than 250 differently abled children. The event was
jointly organized by NABARD, Tata Chemicals and
Club of LEO.
Ehsaas started with 30 NGOs putting their stalls,
displaying pieces of jewelry, clothes, chocolates, trays
etc. hand-crafted by special kids and teachers. Later in
evening, the event held dance performances by
approximately hundred children from more than 11
NGOs including St. Catherine Home, Muskan
Foundation for People with Multiple Disabilities,
Andhakshi Ashram, Pods, Gharkul Public Charitable
Trust, Dakshinya School, Samarpan, Priyanj Special
School and N.N.H Special School. Ehsaas'12 saw
participation from mentally and physically challenged
children, who not only showcased their spirit of life but
also their innate talent. Ehsaas also invited twelve year
every child went home with a special gift. The DOCC
a tribute to these children and wished them a blissful
Ehsaas-12 was a great success and achieved heights,
with attendance of children, professors and teachers
from the local colleges. It made a busy day for the
NGOs, helping them do a great business with their
PGDM Social Projects :
DOCC Process- A Journey
It begins every year around October when the buzz
about the DOCC project starts spreading among the
students of PGDM. Conversations ripe with discussions
ranging from the interest of students, areas where they
want to work and the causes they want to support. This
year too, the allocation process began in October with
DOCC committee attempting to get an understanding
from the batch about their preferences followed by a
contact process where the committee started sending
out request for proposals to all NGOs associated with
SPJIMR. After a thorough mapping with preferences,
NGOs were further shortlisted on a very important
criterion, the work setting. It was a compulsory
mandate that this time students work in a strictly rural
environment to understand the grass root
implementations of management strategies.
As a result, 48 NGOs were shortlisted as the final
offering to the batch consisting of over 139 projects for
them to choose from. The areas of work included
healthcare, rural development, rural marketing, youth
empowerment, women empowerment, ecology
development, environmental research etc. The
students based on their previous preferences, selected
NGOs of their liking and were mapped accordingly.
Then followed a communication between the students
and their respective NGOs, geared with the
knowledge of where they were headed to. Sessions
were taken by Prof. Nirja Mattoo, Chairperson
DOCC, Dr. Preeta George and Dr. Ajit Prasad to elicit
the deliverables that included in-depth understanding
of field assessment in NGO work. Field visits were
organized followed by a detailed report and a case
study writing session.
Students embarked on their projects on March 5 and
their six week endeavor began. They worked for
NGOs from March 5 to April 18 on various issues
ranging from solving acute financial problems,
administration problems to providing innovative
marketing solutions. Sometimes simple streamlining
solutions go a long way in improving the conditions.
Real time troubleshooting, on-field decision making,
working in difficult conditions yet maintaining focus
and determination and grass root bonding are few
objectives of this wonderful pedagogic initiative.
Students working in NGOs spread across the length
and breadth of the nation, thus worked in some really
unnerving conditions. The type of character building
which was expected out of this pedagogy initiative
could be easily gauged from the student's
presentations. Conviction, dedication and belief were
the three most important characteristics that boldly
shined in the ensuing discussions.
15
DOCC- experiences of PGDM participants
Norman B. Rice once said “Dare to reach out your hand
into the darkness, to pull another hand into the light.”
Our DOCC stint at Hamara Foundation helped us truly
understand the depth within that statement. Interacting
with the street children, the beneficiaries of the
foundation, was a huge eye-opener. They've all been
through some really traumatic experiences in the past.
But it's encouraging and inspiring to see how they've
bounced back and created a new life for themselves.
Their goals, dreams and thoughts are fluid and need
direction and moulding. They are ever so keen to talk to
students like us to know about the world, places worth
seeing and things worth experiencing. We realized that
we were, through our anecdotes and imagery, able to
convince them that there's a better life out there to
aspire towards and therefore hard work is needed to
improve themselves.
I owe my well-being to RUDI' exclaimed Jashoda Ben, a
RudiBen, from Kunjrao, a village 20 Kms from Anand,
Gujarat. A couple of tears rolled down which were
proud and gleaming with happiness. Three weeks into
my DOCC and I was getting immersed in a unique
culture developed by SEWA (Self Employed Women's
Association). The platform provided by SPJIMR helped
me and my colleagues experience the ground zero
situation in the development and execution of a sales
strategy in the heartlands of Gujarat. We were assigned
with the task of developing a plan to increase the sales
of a brand called RUDI which comprised of agro based
products, produced, processed, marketed and
consumed by villagers. Management Frameworks are
great to apply and analyze, but the real trick is
application and execution. Talking to villagers, listening
to their views, their outlook towards products and life in
general helped us understand the significant spatial
and generation gap that still exists between urban and
rural India. Battling some odds ourselves, I feel
liberated from the fears
of incompetence and
inadequacies. This stint
with DOCC will definitely
play a role in influencing
our role as Business
Leaders of tomorrow.
DOCC experiences
I did my summer Internship with Chaitanya, a NGO
based in Khed district of Maharashtra, working
towards women empowerment and building selfreliant
sustainable institutions. The institution believes
in resource building which helps the community not just
once, but throughout its existence. As part of our
DOCC, we worked on a project called “Cash Flow
Analytics”. It aims at finding the root cause behind the
Agrarian Distress of Vidhrabha farmers using their
cash flow status. This in turn will help Chaitanya and
other socially inclined institutions to address the root
causes of distress by offering Financial and Livelihood
Products as part of intervention strategies. One of our
major learning was strength of self-reliance. During
our stay at Chaitanya, we observed that irrespective of
the Education Level and the Intellectual Capability of
local women, they all had one thing in common –
passion for making themselves independent.
We also had several opportunities to converse with
people from different strata of society. After interacting
with people there, we realized that simple joys of life
and inner satisfaction are more important than
materialistic pleasures. In a nutshell, our DOCC
experience not only gave us a chance to apply
frameworks in real life, but also an opportunity to
enrich our people skills.
“The six weeks stint at Siruthuli as part of my DOCC
project was not only an enriching experience but also a
reality shock for me to an extent. It was heartening to
see and understand the issues involved in effective
utilization of an ecosystem & its natural resources, it was
also satisfying to see years of hard work translated into
positive changes. The initial apprehensions of working
in an unstructured environment were overcome by the
enthusiasm shown by the people involved in the project.
The program has given me the opportunity to work
within constraints and deal with various Government
PGPM: Beyond Classroom Experiential
Learning
PGPM participants experience social projects
organized by Centre for Development Of Corporate
Citizenship (DOCC). As a part of their curriculum,
PGPM participants were required to do a 2-week
project, from 25th May 2012 to 6th June 2012 in a
non – formal sector, understand their working, get
sensitized to their problems and give possible
management inputs. They focus on rural development
initiatives and see how a community is empowered
and mobilized for implementing sustainable
development projects.
After project competition, the participants had
presentation of their projects in presence of the panel
which comprised of members like Mr. Amol Bhaleroa,
Manager of Corporate Social Opportunities at MCX;
Mr. N Sunil Kumar, Vice President at The Royal Bank of
Scotland N. V. & Director at RBS Foundation India;
Ms. Kamini Kapadia, Chief Consultant for Child
protection at UNICEF; Dr. Vibhuti Patel, Director of
Department of Post Graduate Studies and Research of
SNDT Women's University; Mr. Ravi Duggal, working
with International Budget Partnership, Ms. Mona
Investment Holdings Private Limited; Prof. Jiban
Mukopadhyay, Faculty at SPJIMR; Ms. Neelima
Deshpande, Counselor at Abhyudaya (SPJIMR).
The participants visited NGOs across the country
offering their managerial inputs on wide variety of
issues such as water sanitation, education
empowerment in rural areas, saving and promoting
green environment, protecting rights, upliftment &
welfare for single women, eradication of child labor,
creating employment opportunities for the
underprivileged, etc.
Gaining invaluable lessons from this experience, they
witnessed how life is on the other side and realized
their responsibilities as Corporate Citizens. How one
can manage with limited resources was seen both as a
challenge and an opportunity!
Our passion for the cause and our institute's confidence
in our ability to comprehend and execute the project
provided motivation to give our best. Since then, this
project has been nothing but an eye opener for us. We
truly understand how our work will impact PPES as they
will be able to do business better and therefore provide
better living conditions for the people in village. The
project was a runaway success with recommendations
on HR and operational issues, which led to an increase
of productivity by 40%.
We may never get recognized for our efforts outside of
National University of Singapore (NUS) students visit for DOCC immersion
Strengthening ties across borders and realizing the
needs of the society, 5 students from National
University of Singapore (NUS) were at SPJIMR, each on
a mission to work for the society for six weeks as a part
of DOCC Project.
One such team was of Idris Woo and Kanishk Hemani,
who worked in the microfinance domain with
Swadhaar Fin Serve, a microfinance institution, for a
period of 6 weeks. They spent the first week in India
visiting and interacting with staffs from different NGOs
and organizations such as Hamara Foundation,
UNICEF, Swadhaar, Aditi, Sparsh, TATA Motors and
TATA Institute of Social Sciences, to find out more about
their individual missions and visions and the various
social projects that they have embarked on.
In their report, Woo and Hemani highlighted the
pressing issues that microfinance institutions face-the
issue of loan delinquency. They explained the various
reasons for write-off cases for both Individual Loans
and Group Loans. They analyzed the data unearthed
and attempted to draw linkages as well as find
possible reasons for the trends. Kanishk said, “In spite
of spending close to two months immersed in the
microfinance sector and having learnt a lot from
operations to policies, I realize that there are still
aspects to the sector that I have barely touched.”
Deepshikha Project is a determined effort to engage in
active dialogue with the adolescent girls, organizing
them into active and empowered groups and
facilitating their active participation in the development
of their communities while ensuring that their rights as
citizens are fulfilled.
Another participant, Arthur Lee worked in the area of
HIV AIDS. Arthur quoted, “My study has been designed
to be qualitative and exploratory in nature to uncover
issues surrounding HIV/AIDS intervention policies and
projects that may not have been raised or formally
documented.” He worked with The Humsafar Trust, an
organization that carries some of the Mumbai District
AIDS Control Society's projects for controlling HIV AIDS
epidemic.
The work done by these 5 students has proven to be
invaluable resource to these organizations which was
observed during their presentations and also
appreciated by the members of respective
organizations. The importance of working for the
society is being transpiring crossborders. We at SPJIMR
Socialbrics - Workshop on “Creating an NGO Brand”
Helping more than 45 NGOs to successfully create
their brand, SPJIMR's Socialbrics, Center for Training &
Management for Social Sector, successfully completed
its sixth workshop in the month of February 2012.
The workshop was conducted by Prof A. B. Kulkarni,
faculty SPJIMR and facilitated by Dr. Ashita Sharma.
The training session commenced on 13th Feb 2012
with representatives from 5 NGO's participating from
across India. During the session, the participants were
to find answers for the challenges faced by their own
NGO. Each day, the participants were assigned some
activity. On the first day, they were asked to do a field
survey to learn about the consumer insight for their
brand.
The workshop methodology was in accord with the
concepts of the NGO's represented. The session
involved live interaction along with games & examples.
On the last day of the workshop, the participants
prepared a blueprint of the brand plan for their
organizations.
Swedish students acquaint themselves with Abhyudaya
22 sociology under-graduate students from Sweden
visited SPJIMR on 6th February to study social scenario
in India. Their first stop was in Mumbai following which
they were to visit other similar places in Gujarat.
After taking a tour of the huge campus, the committee
along with Prof. Rukaiya Joshi acquainted the students
with Abhyudaya. The Swedish students took keen
interest in learning about the program and its activities
and were highly appreciative of the cause.
They visited some BMC schools to get firsthand
experience of their
working. Sister
Blanche, the principal
of St. Catherine's
School, gave a warm
welcome to the
foreigners who also
had a small interactive
session with our
showed them around
the school while the
Swedish students
interacted with various
Swedish students on campus
other students in the
school. Both parties shared their experiences about
their respective countries.
Abhyudaya trains School Teachers
Every student spends plenty of hours in studying i.e. to
memorize, retain and recall. But, is the time spent in
studying actually useful? How do we make sure that we
make optimum use of the time spent on studies?
The “Effective Study Habits” workshop is an attempt to
help students achieve more and perform better by
teaching several techniques to the school teachers. The
workshop was conducted by Dr. Nandini Diwan in
November, 2011 to introduce certain techniques and
help teachers in understanding and learning how to
enhance the performance of their students. On 27th
March, 2012, a follow-up session of the workshop was
organized. Taking ahead from where she had left, Dr.
Diwan addressed the teachers on better ways of
implementing the techniques along with sharing of
experiences by teachers during implementation and
discussion regarding hurdles faced by them and how
to eliminate them. The session ended with the
formulation of a plan for each teacher to follow during
the coming months.
A ride with Magic Bus
April, 2012
After toiling their way through the annual
examinations, the Abhyudaya Sitaras needed a break
to enjoy. Moving away from the routine, the Sitaras
went for a 3-Day Outbound Camp to Magic Bus at
Aasrewadi village near Karjat.
For the trip, the Sitaras were taken in two batches
dividing them according to their age & standard; half
of them went from 11th April to 13th April, while the
remaining went from 29th April to 1st May.
Each morning at Magic Bus began with the Sitaras
practicing the Yoga lessons learnt back home. After the
Yoga session began a day filled with exciting activities
and fun-filled games. Sitaras spent their mornings
observing and learning about various trees, plants,
fruits and their uses at the nature trail session. This was
followed by a series of sequential activities where
Sitaras learned important team-building skills like
leadership, motivation, support, concentration,
planning and team-work. The Sitaras were divided into
various groups depending on their personality, height
& ability. Each Sitara participated in all the activities
with zeal. One of the favourites was “wall climbing”.
Equally popular was the “3 islands game”. Some other
activities included “low-rope course”, “swamp way”
and “night walk”.
In the evenings, the Sitaras were set free to play any
game of their choice right from skipping to dodge-ball.
It was evident that the boys could not get enough of
football, while kho-kho was the famous sport among
the girls. Apart from games, each group performed a
small skit based on the topic given to them as a
part of their skill-building exercise. During their
performances, several attributes like confidence,
initiation, and sense of responsibility were highlighted.

management, a shift supported by the CIO that
created a cross-business-unit shared architecture and
technology services organization. Shah created the
blueprint for this shared function that laid out the
architectural principles, the technology road map, and
the business-enabling services that PaaS would offer.
Now, Fidelity Asset Management has increased both
operational efficiency and business flexibility.
Experience of a FMB student, M. Filtz - From the Boardroom to the Dinner Table
When Ben Grossman received his MBA from
Columbia Business School in 2006, he faced a tough
decision: he could either take a lucrative full-time job
at Goldman-Sachs or go work for his family's business.
He opted for the latter. “I was most passionate about
going to work with my family - working with my brother
and my dad,” says Grossman, now the co-president of
Grossman Marketing Group, which was founded by
his great-grandfather in 1910.
Grossman is not alone. Recent studies have shown that
family businesses may account for at least a third of the
United States' annual GDP; and they may employ at
least a quarter of its workforce. For many sons and
daughters of family business leaders, as well as nonrelated
executives working in those enterprises, family
business is big business. But they can pose some
unique challenges, especially if you're part of the
family.
“If you're coming on as the next generation, you're
going to be looked at differently, and you need to be
conscious of that,” says Grossman. “You need to work
really hard not to take anything for granted. ”
And the stakes can be higher in businesses run by your
family, according to Parimal Merchant, the Director of
the Center for Family Managed Business at SPJIMR. “A
normal MBA is prepared to work in a company and
make decisions,” says Merchant, “and if something
goes wrong, he can resign and join another
company.” “But in a family business, if I make a
decision and something goes wrong, then I have to
face the music, both in the business and potentially at
home.”
Some MBA programs have specialized curriculum
options and other resources that meet the particular
needs and challenges of students working in family
enterprises. For example, UNC's Kenan-Flagler
Business School, through its Family Enterprise Center,
offers two courses designed specifically for students
working in – or planning to work in – family-run
businesses. These courses cover specific issues like
governance, succession, and the overall evolution of a
family business. The Center's co-founder and director,
Cooper Biersach, says that these courses and other
resources “help students synthesize what they're
learning in other classes with a family business
perspective,” sort of as a way to tailor the b-school
experience for their specific needs.
Communication skills, for instance, can be developed
in general leadership and other classes, but being
24 SPJIMRnews
Mar 21, 2012
able to communicate effectively with family members
in a business environment can be challenging.
According to Ben Grossman, with family, sometimes
“you might act differently than you do in the outside
world just because they know you best.” This familiarity
can complicate business relationships. Prof. Parimal
Merchant notes that this complexity can be further
compounded by generational differences. “The
thinking is different,” he says, “the speed of working is
different, so they have to learn to appreciate each
other.”
Unique challenges
When Grossman was at Columbia, there were no
courses specifically designed for family business
management (Columbia launched a specialized
curriculum in 2007). However, Grossman has found
that his MBA and his experience working for other,
non-family run organizations provided invaluable
perspective, as well as many of the qualities that have
allowed him to excel in his family business.
“Being successful in a business – family or not family –
requires a lot of same skills,” he says. “You need to be a
good listener, you need to be willing to work hard, you
need to be creative, you need to be a good team
member.”
To achieve this kind of success, SPJIMR’s FMB program
encourage practical application of the business
concepts directly into students' family businesses.
Students in FMB for example, only meet for one week a
month and rest of the time they work for their business.
According to Parimal Merchant, this allows students to
learn the material and apply it immediately, so that
they finish the program with “a good understanding of
management practices, and at the same time they
have a good understanding of their family's business.”
Indeed, Ben Grossman says that his Columbia
experience has proved to be very practical. Along with
the relevant skills Grossman picked up in school, he
credits having a close relationship with his brother – the
company's other co-president – as one of the primary
reasons for his company's continued success, even
through a tough economic climate.
“I can't imagine having gone through the last few years
without my brother,” he says. “You can't really put a
price or a value on that, but I'm very lucky that I get to
work with him everyday.”

Interview with Mr. Ratan Tata
PGPM-811 Rahul Singhal for a class assignment with
Prof. Parimal Merchant, interviewed India’s legendary
corporate leader Mr. Ratan Tata.
Q: Can you name a person who has had a
tremendous impact on you as a leader? Maybe
someone who has been a mentor to you! Why and
how did this person impact your life?
A: Though there have been many people who have
impressed me with their leadership qualities, perhaps
the closest there has been (a mentor to me) was Mr.
J.R.D. Tata. He was considerably older but we shared
a lot of common interests like flying and an abiding
interest in technology. He lived for two years after I
succeeded him as the Chaiman of Tata Sons, a post he
held for more than five decades. But in those two years
he was the epitome of correctness, as he let me make
my own decisions while always being on hand in case
I needed to benefit from his sage advice.
Q: As an organization gets larger there can be a
tendency for the “institution” to dampen the
“inspiration”. How do you ensure this does not
happen?
A: This is a challenge for all large organisations. I
have sought to counter this in Tata by constantly
exhorting colleagues to question the unquestionable,
to lead and never follow and to think big and, above
all, innovate.
Q: What is one characteristic that you believe every
leader should possess?
A: Above all, a leader should possess humility.
Q: What is that one mistake you witness leaders
making more frequently?
A: The most common
mistake that most leaders
make is that they stop
listening and questioning.
Q: What advice would
you give someone going
into a leadership position
for the first time?
A: To remember that you
are only as good as the
team that you create and
foster.
Q: What is the biggest challenge facing leaders
today?
A: To cope with the increasingly rapid pace of
change in all the variables which go into keeping a
business competitive and profitable.
Q: I believe as a leader it is important to continually
evolve and grow. Sir you are at the pinnacle, do you
still believe it is possible to grow and evolve? If yes,
then how do you manage that?
A: The purpose of entrepreneurship is to find
solutions to everyday problems. It is self-evident that
the world needs fresh thinking to forge solutions
across a host of challenges, in which tackling
poverty (its causes and after effects). rising
inequality and climate change are perhaps three of
the most important. Contributing to lasting
solutions to these challenges is enough to daunt
and challenge any entrepreneur.
‘Passion over Positivity’ - thought on “Achieving the Objective you Dream of” -
by Sameer Pendse, SPJIMR Alumnus
This is the second and final line of thought on the
“achieving the objective you dream of” theme. While
the previous article spoke about the tactical measures
that can be taken to align one’s actions and initiatives
to achieve the success you aim for, there are some
more strategic states of mind which can make the
execution of tactics much easier.
The first strategic state of mind is the power of
positivity, deliberately kept out of the first article;
positivity is a mindset where you always look at the
bright side of any endeavor. Some of the ways of
building positivity are:
1. Visualize the goal, execution and success – while
over-doing this can lead to ennui and fatigue, using
this method leads to a mental dress rehearsal so that
when you start doing things in reality, they don't seem
unfamiliar.
2.Don't think of failure – while success is not
guaranteed and failure is a constant possibility,
suspending the thoughts about the failure scenario will
keep you motivated and energized. If failure does
happen, so be it but at least you gave it your best shot.
3. Look at every opportunity as a learning experience –
it's all about consistent evolution, if you look at the
positive side of what you are taking away from the
endeavor, that is a big plus if the actual goal does not
materialize.
4. Plan for success – Assume you will be successful,
leave no stone unturned in defining all the steps which
are needed to achieve the objective, with proper
planning and rehearsal (point 1), there is a better
chance of a light at the end of the tunnel.
5. Focus & discipline – Ignore distractions, negativity
and conflicting opinions, concentrate on the steps to
get there.
6.Persevering through the first few negative strokes –
there is bound to be some hurdles and hiccups on the
way, take them in your stride, promise yourself you can
get there and focus (though giving yourself some
healthy time for recharging, adjusting, rejuvenating
yourself).
With these guidelines to positivity, you should be
happier in what you do but there is one higher level of
the strategic mindset which makes life and living an
inspired experience – that is passion. Passion
supersedes positivity and leads to it effortlessly, without
too much thinking and too much trying, it just gets you
going like magic. What you need to do to achieve your
dream may not start of as a passion but more as a
need (various hierarchies, stages and drivers) but you
can make it a passion by following some simple steps.
With the passion comes boundless energy, motivation
and even adversity seems an easy stepping stone.
26
SPJIMRnews
Perspectives
There are a few principles which can help convert
endeavor for a goal into a passion. These are best
exemplified through a few life cases (names and
situations masked for protecting the person's privacy).
An individual who was a poor student due to certain
events in his life, hated technology. Then, one day, on
an overnight train journey he picked up a Pascal
programming book and by the end of the journey had
achieved a competency in the subject. He went on to
excel in his profession over the next few decades. In
one magical night, a constant dread became a lifetime
love and he went from being a novice to an expert
innovator. He achieved this by learning to love what he
did.
An individual who found the right field in medicine
suited to himself, accepted it as a career goal and was
shaped through the various adversities and situations
in that field to become a wise and adept professional –
a leading authority in that field. He was constantly
motivated by the realization that his experiences made
him wiser and stronger; he improved and evolved as
an individual due to his passion for his chosen
profession – his motivations re-inforced his passion.
The world is rife with a variety of cases of individuals
who went from being software professionals to
entrepreneurs in totally unrelated fields, enjoying the
freedom and broad horizons which come from living
outside the customary box. As of now, it may be not be
lucrative, but the thrill and vibrancy of existence is
something they cherish intensely. True liberty is indeed
a precious commodity. They realized that they disliked
what they were presently doing; it made them
miserable and had the courage to seek their passion as
a way of life though it didn't guarantee material
success.
One that I can vouch for, teaching financial risk has
given me an appreciation of the depth and nuances of
the subject which just studying never did. It's also very
fulfilling to meet people on the same wavelength and
the mutual connect is palpable. With some luck and
lots of endeavor, the next step could be some genuine
innovation. The lesson for me, learning and sharing
knowledge and insight enforces the passion for the
subject and the field. Through almost a decade in
financial services software, another lesson is sharing
work spaces with a cohort group brings motivation and
much needed inspiration through shared experiences
and challenges and common wins and defeats.
The most successful people who are also happy doing
what they do are those who strive for continuous
success rather than sudden jumps. They go from step to
step and keep it going over there productive lifetime.
Their motto, ‘be passionate to be positive’.
