GENERAL INFORMATION 

LOCATION AND DIRECTIONS TO THE SALE 

The machinery saleground fronts onto the A142 at Sutton, approximately 6 miles west of Ely, 

Cambridgeshire and approximately 18 miles north of Cambridge. The recommended approach from the 

North, West and South is via Huntingdon joining the A141 signposted to March at the junction of the 

A14/A141. At Chatteris, follow the A142 signposted to Ely and the Saleground will be seen on the 

left-hand side, opposite Sutton village. Access is gained from the roundabout off the A142 sign posted 

AGRICULTURAL AUCTION. If approaching from the East or the M11, follow the A10 and join the A142 

signposted to March at Ely. Access is gained from the roundabout off the A142 sign posted

Class 1 - Tractors, Steam & Other Vehicles 5% plus VAT 

Class 2 - Motorcycles 8% plus VAT 

Class 3 - All Other Items 10% plus VAT 

Items in this sale sold subject to VAT are marked with an asterisk. 

COMMISSION BIDS 

The Auctioneers are pleased to faithfully execute commission bids on behalf of Purchasers unable to 

attend the Sale. Such commission bids will only be accepted from persons who have viewed the Sale and 

completed the requisite bidding form available at the Sales Office. 

BIDDING 

People wishing to bid for specific lots should assume the rate of selling at approximately 100 lots per 

hour, although the sale of Motorcycles, Vehicles and Tractors will be less per hour. 

BUYERS' BID NUMBERS 

The Auctioneers propose to operate a buyer bid number system. Therefore, Purchasers are requested to 

attend at the Sales Office during View Day or prior to the commencement of the Sale, so that full details 

of the intending Purchaser's name, address, bankers and other relevant information may be recorded. 

Please bring identification, those without will be unable to register and failure to obtain a buyer's bid card 

will result in the Auctioneer refusing to accept your bid. If you have a permanent bidding number 

with us, please use this number. If you are unsure please enquire in the main office on the viewing 

or sale day. PLEASE NOTE: There is a one-off non refundable administration charge of £10 (incl. 

VAT) for all new purchaser registrations. 

LIGHT REFRESHMENTS 

Light refreshments will be available throughout the Sale Day.

CLEARANCE OF LOTS 

Purchasers may remove their lots during or after the Sale but ONLY having first 

obtained a Collection Ticket from the Sales Office. All lots entered for sale inside 

must be cleared without exception on the Day of Sale. Outside lots must be cleared 

from the Saleground by Friday, 1st August 2008. Failure by purchasers to remove 

their lots within this time will incur a penalty storage charge of £5 per lot per day, 

payable on collection. Purchasers are reminded that ALL LOTS become their 

responsibility at the fall of the hammer (see Conditions of Sale). Forklift loading 

facilities will NOT be available on the day of Sale. We will be open on 

Sunday, 27th July from 9.00am until 12.00noon, after which the gates will 

be locked. 

SETTLEMENT OF ACCOUNTS 

Buyers are requested to note that all accounts must be settled on the Day of Sale. Persons unknown to 

the Auctioneers and wishing to pay by cheque must make one of the following arrangements BEFORE 

the Day of Sale. 

(i) Inform your own Bank Manager that you wish to pay by cheque, tell him the maximum amount 

you are likely to spend and ask him to instruct our Bankers that it will be in order to accept your 

cheque. Our Bankers will then inform us. Our Bank is Barclays Bank plc. PO Box No.885, Mortlock

(ii) Arrange with your Bank Manager for the issue of a guaranteed cheque to be brought with you.

Fax copies and photocopies are NOT acceptable and the letter must specify the sale and date. 

(iv) Overseas payments should be made by Inter Bank transfer using SWIFT to Barclays Bank Bene't

(v) Payment can be made by Visa & Mastercard Credit Cards; a surcharge of 1.35% plus VAT will be 

added to the invoice total for this method of payment. We also accept payment by Switch or 

Visa/Delta Debit Cards for which there is no additional charge. 

MONEY LAUNDERING REGULATIONS 2003 

In order to comply with these regulations, we are no longer able to accept cash payment for sums in 

excess of £7,500. This includes single payments amounting to this sum or multiple payments totaling 

£7,500.

The auction sale includes items of WORKING MACHINERY and those persons attending are 

advised to take all reasonable precautions to avoid accidents. 

We have a duty to increase safety for both our staff and the public wherever possible and the 

following precautions must be adhered to by all those entering the saleground. 

� No lifting of machinery by forklifts, cranes, hiabs or any other means on Sale days. This 

includes our telescopics and customers own machines. 

� No tractors or machinery to be left running. Vendors and Purchasers MUST AT ALL 

TIMES MAINTAIN SUPERVISION OF SUCH MACHINERY AND VEHICLES when left 

running. 

� Please keep children under supervision at all times. NO DOGS ALLOWED. 

� Do not drive tractors around the sale yard other than for the purposes of loading or 

unloading. 

� The speed limit in the saleground for ALL VEHICLES is 5mph. Be aware of pedestrians. 

� Do not smoke in the vicinity of tractors or engines. 

� All loader arms to be lowered and contents of buckets emptied. 

� If starting tractors across the solenoid, please ensure two people are present, one 

person being in the driving seat having control of the clutch and brakes, and that the 

tractor is in neutral. 

� Prior to unloading, please check brakes, clutch and position of the engine stop. 

These rule applies to everybody, with no exceptions and it will be strongly enforced.

MOTORCYCLES

First registered on the 7th April 1936, CXL 

772 was purchased from Pride & Clarke’s 

famed dealership sometime in 1938 having 

hung around in the showroom according to 

family memory. The purchaser, a lifelong 

engineer employee at Muirhead Ltd and the 

son of the seller of the PV (Perfectly 

Vibrationless) Motorcycle, clearly had a 

genetic and professional bent toward technical 

excellence as represented by the Ariel 

Square Four on its debut. Used as regular 

ride to work transport, the hostilities of 

WW11 saw the Ariel climbing to the top of 

the hill at Petts Wood, on a nightly basis, to 

man the local Anti Aircraft unit. With the 

passing of time a young family arrived and 

in order to accommodate the son and heir a 

sidecar was added shortly after the birth in 

1949, the accompanying image shows the 

machine and youthful passenger in 1958. 

1959 coincided with the arrival of the first 

family car and the last entry in the buff logbook, 

the Squariel appears to have then 

been consigned to the shed, out of sight 

but firmly in mind. Age soon began to take 

its toll until, in the mid 1980’s, the owner’s 

son (the vendor) decided that Dad’s bike 

should be restored for him. The work was 

carried out with professional help and practicality 

in mind and so included a complete 

rewire and the use of stainless steel and 

Allen bolts. Restored to a treasured family 

heirloom, sadly CXL 772, now a solo unit, 

never saw action again and has remained 

garage bound with just the occasional start 

up. Now passed on to the second generation 

the Ariel is to be offered for sale for 

only the second time in its 72 year life due 

to an imminent family move to the West 

Country. Pleasantly mellowed, the Ariel 

started first kick on inspection having had a 

fresh batch of petrol added and would not 

require much in the way of re-commissioning 

for immediate use nor indeed, for 

returning to factory specification. Supplied 

with a buff logbook covering the period 

1952 – 1959, a 1959 tax disc, a quantity of 

spares, petrol ration book, a current V5C 

and nearly three quarters of a century of 

loving family ownership in the same area.

This is probably the ultimate in period road 

legal Norton’s, conceived over 25 years ago, 

this special was constructed during the early 

1980’s by Frank Bennett utilising a 1952 

Manx 500cc long stroke engine in a specifically 

modified 1961 slimline featherbed 

frame with a 1961 Dominator 99 gearbox. 

The project was approached with military 

precision and the build file is a complete joy 

to behold, each stage is detailed with drawings, 

calculations and lengthy correspondence 

with various specialists. Indeed Mr 

Bennett and the legendary Ray Petty seem 

to have struck up quite a relationship during 

the course of the build, the file details 

every nut and bolt and every decision taken 

and shows in great detail every internal 

modification made. Mr Bennett’s vision 

clearly came to fruition as a run of tax discs 

between 1986 and 1998 show that the 

Norton was constantly on the road. It 

appears that the Manx moved on from its 

creator around 1992 to a local collector 

who kept it for the next 14 years before it 

changed hands to the current custodian in 

2006. Purchased with the idea of being a 

feature in the living room, some aesthetic 

improvements were made. An original 

Manx conical hub was sourced from France 

along with the correct Manx front forks 

from Andy Molnar, the lighting set was 

removed and a period type screen fitted. A 

pair of racing side plates were fitted partly 

in order to disguise the car type oil filter, 

the seat unit was changed to a more serious 

racing type unit and an Amal GP carb’ 

was put in place of the Amal Mk2 concentric 

that had been in use. All the parts 

removed have been retained and will be 

offered with the Norton. The living room 

centre piece idea has since been vetoed by 

influential members of the family and the 

Slimline Manx Special is now offered for 

sale. It has not turned a cog whilst in the 

current custodianship and the last tax disc is 

dated 1998 as is the last MOT certificate, 

therefore some re-commissioning for road 

use will be required.A unique machine and 

a beautiful one, offered with paddock 

stand, spares, and full and comprehensive 

documentation.

This awesome creation should not be confused 

with the usual scaffold pole and chequer 

plate creations seen. Built to order by 

respected trike specialists “Trike Design”, 

the six speed 1450cc fuel injected Dyna 

Super Glide has been transformed from the 

solo machine with the use of many 

specialist parts. The twin shock, disc braked, 

wishbone rear end is finished off with a pair 

of Jaguar style spoked rear wheels complete 

with “knock on/off” hubs. The original rear 

wheel has been re-installed at the front end 

by the use of custom wide slab yokes, tiller 

bars topped by a “V-Rod” screen finish the 

fat look at the steering end of things. 

Equipped with hand brake, forward controls 

and a 2-1 Super-Trapp exhaust system, the 

black trike sounds as good as it looks and is 

fitted with a tow ball should extra equipment 

require transportation. Capable of 

carrying two passengers in the capacious 

rear seat this is not a machine for shrinking 

violets, you are destined to draw a crowd. 

Commissioned by the vendor as one of a 

pair for him and his wife, a recent operation 

has meant that his trike has to go and he 

will return to his solo machines. Immaculate 

in all departments and with just over 2,000 

recorded miles, the belt drive Harley trike is 

complete alarm system, V5C documentation 

and tax valid until December 08, the manufacturers

This fine motorcycle represents the epitome 

of classic fifties motorcycling. Surely one of 

the most handsome motorcycles of this era, 

this Tiger 100 has been lovingly restored by 

a friend of the Jefferies of Shipley family, 

and thus with a great deal of Triumph 

knowledge and passion built in. Bought 

from a gentleman who had owned the 

machine for over thirty years, it had fallen 

into what could only be described as a rusty 

ruin. However, almost everything about the 

machine was in original order, albeit 

neglected, and thus it was thought worthy 

of restoration. The writer can state with 

good authority that no stone has been left 

unturned in an attempt to perform a sympathetic 

restoration. For example, the 

chrome parts are all original, not pattern 

parts, (with the exception of the horn button). 

In addition, the cycle parts are almost 

all original, and the frame has been stove 

enamelled, giving an authentic look to a 

quality restoration. The engine has been 

totally rebuilt with new pistons, rings, 

camshafts, valves and valve springs, seals, 

and bearings. At the same time, the gearbox 

was stripped and rebuilt, included the 

fitting of a new selector mechanism. These 

tasks were performed by Martin Wilson, (for 

many years a technician at Allan Jefferies). 

The speedometer has been restored showing 

the original mileage at a little over 

30,000 miles. The magneto and dynamo 

were restored by Dave Lindsley, (all receipts

Wylde. Some of the minor, but important 

detail will please the classic cognoscenti, 

such as the correct cheese head screws, and 

the original “Dunlop” rubber cable ties. All 

in all, this fine motorcycle represents two 

years hard work, for the vendor. It is perhaps 

surprising that the vendor now no 

longer wishes to keep and use this beautiful 

machine, however he now has his eyes on a 

racing restoration, and feels that he enjoys 

the restoration more than the ownership!

machine that was the subject of an engine 

rebuild in 1991 by Alpha Engineering. 

Stated to have covered minimal mileage 

since, the last MOT expired in 2002, the 

“Fanny B” is currently on a SORN, supplied 

with a VMCC dating certificate, V5C, old 

MOT’s and various receipts. With coil ignition 

and Villiers “Autolube” system this is a 

very practical and useable machine that 

stands out in a crowd.

This TRW was originally despatched to the 

Ministry Of Supply for the Royal Navy on 

31st October 1952 for use as a despatch 

riders machine. A dating certificate from the 

Science Museum Library confirms this along 

with the fact that both engine and frame 

numbers are correct. Still retaining the correct 

canvas panniers and frame, the TRW 

has now acquired a very fine civilian navy 

blue paint job. Purchased at the dispersal 

sale of Cake Street Classics and the personal 

collection of Roger Sharman in 1999 , the 

TRW has been maintained very nicely 

indeed but ridden rather sparingly. A quantity 

of old MOT certificates confirm the current 

mileage indicated of just 33,000. 

Recently sold by Cheffins, the purchaser has 

since refocused his collection and the TRW 

is consequently in need of a new custodian. 

The side valve twin is a machine that can 

hold its own in modern traffic conditions 

and benefits from the addition of electronic 

ignition, an ideal summer toy as well as 

being a piece of our military history, the 

TRW comes supplied with a recent MOT 

and V5 documentation together with the 

previously mentioned dating certificate.

The oil in the frame Triumph Twins were 

the last of the Meriden motorcycles to roll 

off the production line. They first appeared 

in 1971 as 650cc models, enlarging to 

750cc in 1973. During the seventies there 

were many improvements made, and by the 

end of the decade, Triumph were producing 

a rather pleasing product. Although they 

lacked the performance, reliability, and 

smoothness of the Japanese competition, 

they nevertheless captured the imagination 

of a large following of potential motorcycle 

buyers. The T140D was a special edition 

with magnesium wheels. This model checks 

out as very original, save the enamelling of 

the frame. In extremely good order 

throughout and just 8,045 recorded miles, 

the black and gold finish is as per original 

factory specification for a T140D. The pear 

shape USA styled fuel tank was always a 

favourite over the UK spec tank, and even 

today this motorcycle has a stunning up to 

date “classic” look.

status. Little is known of this particular

and in full working order. Especially significant 

is the original undamaged exhaust and 

silencer. Supplied with a V5, a TLR200 will 

appeal to a prospective buyer as an ideal 

greenlaner, (full lighting kit, and ignition 

switch are supplied), a perfect beginners off 

road machine, or even a fairly competitive 

mount in twin shock trials.

Triumph from the first year of the Hinckley 

production. In 1991 production began from 

a brand new factory, and it wasn’t long 

before the public recognised their quality in 

performance and finish. The Daytona 750 

was only listed for one year in Glass’s 

Guide, (1992), but they were in fact available 

for two years, thus making this 

machine particularly rare. With only two 

previous owners, and 43000 miles recorded 

on the clock, the machine is stated to be in 

first class working order, with all original 

bodywork, and virtually no sign of deterioration.

The six cylinder bright red Jaguar has led a 

cosseted existence in the last 4 years. At 

this point the restoration was completed 

and many local rallies and shows were visited 

with some prizes won. Prior to this it 

was believed to have been used as a wedding 

car, it’s earlier history is not known. 

The rebuild was photographically chronicled 

at all points and the file is presented with 

the car. The vendor states that both the 

engine and the suspension have been rebuilt 

and all box sections and sills have been 

pressure treated. The 240 engine is fitted 

with an E-Type straight port head with twin 

SU carburettors, the 4 speed manual box is 

fitted with overdrive and electronic ignition 

ensures clean running. The bright work has 

all been re-chromed and the signature wire 

wheels are stated to be new, the interior 

woodwork has been stripped back and revarnished 

and the headlining has been 

refurbished. With just 70,000 unverified 

miles recorded the vendor describes the 

Jaguar as “A1” all round, supplied with 12 

months tax and MOT, V5C documentation, 

Jaguar Club valuation certificate and history

Forming part of the Holkham Hall collection, 

Norfolk, this wonderfully original 

Luton registered engine has formed part of 

the collection for many years having been in 

the ownership of Richard ‘Dick’ Joice since 

at least 1961. In recent years the engine 

has seen little use and only occassionally 

steamed and has been a static exhibit in the 

museum. The requirement for space and 

rationalisation of the exhibits means that 

the engine is now surplus to requirements. 

The engine offers an excellent opportunity 

to acquire a road roller with good provenance 

and in good condition whilst also 

requiring work to bring it into a serviceable 

steam roller. Last hydraulic test to 210psi in 

1998, last yearly examination 2003. 

Prospective purchasers are advised to 

inspect the previous boiler inspections available 

from the auctioneers. 


1774 MARSHALL SONS & CO LTD STEAM

Motion: Singe cylinder, piston valve 

From the same stable as the 1913 Marshall 

Sons & Co Ltd steam tractor and having 

been the subject of a conversion and very 

well presented. Not much is known of its 

early history although it was originally registered 

with its existing Dundee registration 

number on 4th April 1928. In the early 

Seventies it was in the ownership of a Dr 

William Young of Falkirk, which is presumably 

where it acquired its name 

‘Gleneagles’. From information supplied it 

is understood that the engine was re-tubed 

in 1972 and 1998. The front tube plate 

was also built up to original thickness in 

1998. The engine has not been rallied in 

recent years and would have only seen limited 

use since its last hydraulic test. The last 

boiler examination dated May 2000 quotes 

a safe operating limited of 160psi. The 

engine will be offered for sale with a copy 

of a duplicate logbook, previously boiler 

certificate and the front roller section.

This superby presented Lincoln registered 

steam tractor originally started life as a road 

roller and is believed to have been used for 

thrashing and general haulage work according 

to information supplied by the vendors. 

Following the end of the WWII it was 

owned by several Lincolnshire farmers 

including J W Kitchen of Saxilby and H 

Epton & Son of New Bolingbroke, Boston. 

By 1958 the engine had found its way into 

the ownership of T B Raisley of Holywell, 

Huntingdon. It was sold at Tom Raisley’s 

renowned auction sale, following his death, 

at Holywell in 1980. The late George 

Byerley purchased this engine from Mr K 

Peach of Bubwith, Yorks in 1992 in a 

derelict and dismantled condition. An 

extensive restoration was undertaken 

including the manufacture of new front 

wheels to replace the front roller, axle, 

smoke box, perch bracket, lagging, brass 

caps, coal bunker, which were all handmade 

in the workshop by Mr Byerley at 

Welton Hall. He also states in notes written 

before his death that ‘there are over 60 

hand made parts in each front wheel’. 

Excellent solid rubber tyres have also been 

fitted all round at a cost of £2,000, which 

Mr Byerley reflects is three times the cost of 

the engine when sold in 1913. In addition 

Mr Byerley adds that 1,000 hrs of work 

went into the restoration of this engine. 

The engine represents an excellent restoration 

and conversion of which the deceased 

could be rightly proud. The engine is 

offered for sale with a buff continuation 

logbook showing the date of original registration 

as being 4th March 1921. The last 

hydraulic test was carried out by Vulcan on 

17th March 1999 to 200psi and it will be 

offered for sale with a current boiler certificate. 


1776 MANN PATENT STEAM CART & WAGON

Just one of four Mann steam wagons 

known to be in preservation of a total of 

just 12 Mann steam engines left in existence 

in the UK. Established by J H Mann, 

who was formerly apprenticed to J & H 

McLaren & Co and the Marshall & Sons in 

Leeds in 1894, the business manufactuered 

steam engines and stationary engines. By 

1901 the business had moved to Pepper 

Road, Leeds and the period up to and 

including the first World War was to be its 

most successful. The company 

concentrated production on 3ton and 5ton 

wagons although there were many variations 

from brewers wagons to municipal 

dust carts. This particular Reading registered 

example was built for use on the battlefields 

of France pulling guns as a tractor. 

On its return to England it was purchased 

by Fylde Council for general haulage and 

then to well-known road makers Isaac Balls 

and used as a light roller. It is understood 

that the engine was sold into preservation 

in the last 1950’s to Messrs Cole Bros of 

Leeds but no work was carried out. 

Following its acquisition by Gerry Proctor of 

Nidd the engine was stripped down and put 

into storage. In 1984 it was purchased by I 

& D Fearnley & Son and restored to ites present 

condition. In 1991 it received a new 

fire box, smoke box, tube plate, tubes, boiler 

barrel, chassis, water tanks, bunkers, cab 

& body, in addition the wheels received 

new rubber tyres. It is offered for sale with 

current (February 2008) boiler certificate.

Originally supplied new to Newton Abbott 

Council in 1921 and acquired by R Dingle & 

Sons, Cornwall in 1949. It was brought 

into preservation in 1966 when purchased 

by John Dines of Maldon, Essex. Purchased 

by the present owner in 2004. The engine 

is in good condition and was last rallied at 

Barleylands in August 2007. The engine 

has at some time previously been fitted 

with a three-quarter length canopy 

although the engine was not originally fitted 

with one. It is understood that the 

canopy is of Fowler engine having previously 

been fitted to a Fowler engine. Re-tubed 

in 2003 it was hydraulically tested in April 

2006 and is offered for sale with a current 

boiler certificate to full pressure. There is 

an extensive file containing previous boiler 

certificates which details woks having been 

carried out. The sale offers the opportunity 

to acquire a good useable engine.

Supplied new to James Bale of 

Winmarleigh, Lancashire the engine was 

returned to Norfolk on a date not recorded 

but believed to be circa.1903-1905 to J 

Carter of Great Ettingham. By January 

1921 she was sold to E & N Morley of Brize 

Norton, Oxon and it was at this time the 

registration mark BW 4424 was allocated. 

On a date not recorded she was acquired 

by the well known engine dealers Messrs 

Edwards of Swindon, where she remained 

until c.1968. It is understood that a 

restoration project was undertaken in the 

Birmingham area before she was included 

in the Longparish Museum. In 1986 she 

went to Necton to join Ricahrd Parrotts collection 

where she remained until early 

2007. Amongst some of the earliest 

recorded Burrell engines No. 2159 was a 

regular at the Weeting Steam Rally and 

used for threshing demonstrations at various 

other shows. The current boiler certificate 

dated 14th July 2006 records that 

the fire box was renewed in 1978 and retubed 

in 2003. Hydraulic test carried out 

earlier this year and there is a current boiler 

certificate to a reduced pressure testing.

Plantations Inc in the Philippines. Between 

1985 and 1988 some restoration work was 

carried out in Singapore however it was 

returned to the UK for the fitting of a new 

boiler and box by H Smith & Sons, Lincs and 

Stuart Woodbine. Further work to the 

pipework and safety valves was carried out 

by Hickey of Richmond and by Jack 

Wharton of Oxon. The restoration work 

has been carried out in accordance with the 

original Ruston, Proctor drawings. Offered
