Car, Bike Sharing Services Cut Costs

UA parents and students are trying to
save money by using the new Connect by
Hertz car-sharing services, brought to campus
by Parking & Transportation Services
(PTS).
Connect by Hertz, one of the industry
leaders in car-sharing programs, has members
worldwide who pay an annual fee of
$50 and rent cars for as little as $8 an hour,
with gas and insurance included. Part of UA
Parking & Transportation’s sponsorship of
the campus Connect by Hertz Car sharing
includes free “Introductory Memberships.”
Th ese memberships are made available to
any faculty, staff , student, or UA neighbor
who wishes to try out car sharing to see if
it’s a good fi t for their lifestyles. Th e off er
has a value of $50. Just use the promotional
codes provided on the fl yers and web site to
receive the free membership.
Here on campus, Connect by Hertz off ers
Prius’, Escapes and Mini Coopers at fi ve
locations: Second Street Garage, Sixth Street
Garage, Tyndall Avenue Garage, Highland
Avenue, and Olive Street.
Universities, like the UA are a particularly
large opportunity, because parents have
been looking to save money by sending their
children to school without cars. According
to a study by the AAA, even a small sedan
driven just 10,000 miles per year can cost
more than $5,500 to own and maintain.
Universities, like the UA, want to reduce
traffi c congestion, and still give students
who cannot keep a car on campus, the
chance to drive to a movie, concert, dinner,
or shopping. Connect by Hertz also accepts
drivers who are 18, unlike most full-service
rental car companies, which require that
drivers be at least 25 for rentals.

Car-sharing takes cars off the road, and
that fi ts in with the sustainability movement
at the UA. Connect by Hertz and PTS also
hire students to help maintain its fl eet of
cars.
So far, 493 students, faculty and staff have
become Connect by Hertz members, a fi gure
PTS expects to grow as word spreads that
the cars are on campus and are aff ordable at
$8 an hour. Sign up for a membership by going
to: connectbyhertz.com and type in your
promotional code for the free membership,
your driver’s license number and a credit
card. Upon approval Connect by Hertz will
mail a card to you within several days.
PTS feels that the program will persuade
students to keep their cars at home. Th ere
are a lot of students who bring their car but
do not use it, but want to have it there as a
safety blanket.
And if you think that car sharing is the
wave of the future, PTS has brought bike
sharing to the campus. Students, staff and
faculty are eligible to use the bicycles free of
charge. Th e 10 bicycles are comfort style designed,
single speed cruiser bikes with dual
pivot hand brakes. Bikes are checked out at
two locations–Sixth Street Garage cashier
booth and Tyndall Avenue Garage cashier
booth, between 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m., Mon.-Fri.
Bike loan period is for one working day and
the bike must be returned by 4 p.m.
