Based on the results, most students have adequate knowledge when it comes to helping friends who are in need. Seventy-seven percent of students know what to do if a fellow student or friend is extremely intoxicated, 74 percent know what to do if a fellow student or friend is depressed and 72 percent are familiar with the signs of someone who is suicidal. Th ough offi cials at the Dean of Students Offi ce are happy with the fi ndings, Casares said they understand there is always room for improvement. “Regardless of this positive outcome, the university will not rest in its goal to maintain a safe campus environment,” he said. Using these results, the Dean of Students Offi ce will continue to work with its partners to accomplish the mission of creating a safe campus culture. “Th e survey allows us to get more specifi c data concerning our current student population and helps us continue to maintain and enhance the resources and services we provide to our students related to campus safety,” Casares said. One example is the formation of Safe- Cats, which began during the fall 2009. “As a result of this data, we have launched a social networking campaign through SafeCats, with a goal to get messages of safety out to students as early as possible,” Casares said. “We will continue to advocate for earlier education regarding safety on campus.” Th rough SafeCats, students now receive information regarding safety through online social networks such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, as well as the Safe- Cats blog, uasafcats.blogspot.com. Casares said he hopes this program will get students thinking about safety in their daily lives.
