Claus Beling: WHAT YOU DON’T KNOW
Crime Novel
320 pages
978-3-404-16747-0
Paperback
November 2012
A cosy crime novel with a beautiful but deadly setting
WHAT YOU DON’T KNOW is Claus Beling’s first Jersey whodunit featuring the headstrong tea merchant
Emily Bloom who will continue to run her own investigations parallel to those of the Police in future cases –
and novels.
Fear is walking the streets of the normally peaceful Channel Island of Jersey. First, Royal Court judge
Willingham discovers a dead woman in the trunk of his cab, and then 55-year-old Emily Bloom, a tea
merchant from Saint Aubin, finds the murdered body of her neighbor, Debbie Farrow, in a planting hole next
to the road. Harold Conway, the wayward Chef de Police of the Jersey Honorary Police – and, as it happens,
also the unloved former brother-in-law of Mrs. Bloom – recognizes immediately the explosive nature of these
two cases and, as is his duty, he calls in the Criminal Investigation Department from the island’s capital, Saint
Helier. However, the investigations of his rival detective, Jane Waterhouse, do not stop him from continuing to
stick his nose in the case. And he is not the only one doing so. Nobody has any idea that the personable
Emily Bloom has long decided to be more than just a witness and use all her energy and ingenuity to search
for the murderer herself. Because Mrs. Bloom has a gift that nobody knows about, only her best friend: She
has a photographic memory.
For all fans of Ann Granger and Miss Marple
Claus Beling, born 1949, served for almost two decades as the head of the ZDF Entertainment Department
where he developed and produced a wide range of movies and television shows including film versions of
international bestsellers and the Rosamunde Pilcher- and Inga Lindström series. The profound England
connoisseur, who holds a PhD in literary studies, has published several travel books.
Halflings are pleasant and cheerful folk. They enjoy several meals a day, like
to smoke their pipes, and are particularly resistant against evil. And they're
always good for surprises – which also applies to the best known and most
successful fantasy authors.
The point of departure of this book was the idea to have the best fantasy
authors write a story about halflings. The authors were given no guidelines,
which makes the stories united in this book all the more interesting.
Tom Emerson: DEADLY GOLD
Thriller
512 pages
978-3-404-16671-8
Paperback
August 2012
The most dangerous treasure hunt in the world
DEADLY GOLD, a spectacular adventure novel with a breathtaking plot, is the perfect vacation read for
adventurers big and small.
1599. Giordano Bruno travels through Europe enraging the Catholic Church with his heretical theses. In
Venice, he makes the acquaintance of Nuno Alvarez, a Dominican friar. Alvarez is a member of a secret
society that has, for generations, been the guardian of a legendary treasure. Its members call themselves the
Templars. Alvarez tells Bruno about a fabled golden cross, which is in his possession. According to legend, it
points the way to the genesis of humankind. The Holy Inquisition wants to take possession of the cross, by all
means. Alvarez manages to flee but Giordano Bruno is captured and sentenced to death. But even when he
is already burning at the stake, he does not waver from his conviction that the earth is not the only planet with
intelligent life.
Today. Diego Camaro is an obscure adventurer, who earns his money by searching for old artifacts, sunken
ships, and ancient burial sites that are filled with precious treasures.
The new reality TV show „Gold Fever“ could not come at a better time for Diego. Archaeologists have found
an old parchment, which allegedly shows the way to the treasure of the Templars. Researchers have been
hunting for this treasure for centuries. So far, nobody has been able to make any real sense out of the
parchment’s content. The finder of the parchment, the multi-billionaire and media mogul William McAllistair,
comes up with an audacious plan: He creates the show „Gold Fever“. Dozens of research teams will search
simultaneously for the treasure, all under the watchful eye of camera crews. The prize money is enticing, as it
is in the millions. Even though Camaro is not too convinced of the effectiveness of the media hype, the show
might be his chance to scoop up a huge amount of money. But suddenly strange things happen: research
teams disappear or lose their lives in accidents. There seems to exist a powerful organization that wants to
prevent the treasure from being found. And fact is that Camaro is on to something: He discovers a golden
cross, which marks the exact location where the treasure of the Templars is hidden. But obviously this
treasure does not consist of gold, as everybody assumes. The Templar secret reveals how life on earth came
to be and where humanity really originated.
● English summary available
A killer who operates like a computer virus: ubiquitously, invisibly. Vladimir Schwarz, who calls himself The
Nameless One, murdered his beloved sister out of envy when she had her first boyfriend at age fifteen. For
years he has been driven by the idea of sacrificing 15 other women who resemble her closely as a way to
atone for his deed. Schwarz is a computer whiz and has found a way to select and track down the right
victims using online resources, particularly networking and dating websites. The nameless killer assumes the
identity of men he meets at gay SM chat rooms, visits, and then murders. As a result, the homicide squad
and chief detective Clara Vidalis are not even close to picking up the trail of the actual killer and constantly
chasing perpetrators who are long dead.
Just as the murderer is terrorizing the entire city of Berlin with his unseen, Web-supported killing spree, media
mogul Albert Torino of Integrated Entertainment launches a new TV star-search format called She-Bay.
Viewers can use an online auction platform to choose their favorite females who are then cast in the show.
The person who chooses the right favorites gets to spend the night with the winner. While critics are still
ranting about having the broadcast banned, Clara gets wind of the killer's horrible plan. The Nameless One
has kidnapped Andira, the show's top model, and intends to stream the murder of his 15th victim live on the
Internet. Rescuing Andira becomes a sacred mission for Clara. She herself lost her six-year-old sister to a
child molester when she forgot to pick up the girl one evening after music school. She has been tortured by
nightmares and guilt feelings ever since. Due to a shared history of which Clara suspects nothing, the killer
has chosen the chief detective to witness his string of murders and in the end absolve him of his guilt.
For Clara it's do or die. The invisible, ruthless slayer appears dangerous enough to threaten her life, but if she
succeeds in tricking him and saving Andira, she could free herself of remorse forever.
Novel
176 pages
978-3-431-03858-3
Hardcover
September 2012
An orphan girl. A mysterious horse. And the miracle of Christmas.
The perfect gift book for Christmas: a heartwarming Christmas story à la Charles Dickens about a
miraculous horse.
1850, not far from London. Heavy snowflakes are fluttering down from the night sky covering the frozen
forest floor with a blanket of white glittering crystals. All is quiet but then - suddenly - hasty footsteps
echo through the silence. The heavy breathing leaves no doubt: This is a matter of life and death.
Twelve-year-old Agatha is on the run from her pursuers. She was sick and tired of the violence and the
indignities that she had suffered in the orphanage. But her pursuers have almost caught up with her.
The first one is already trying to grab her with his hands, when something truly unbelievable happens:
Out of nowhere appears a white shimmering horse and carries the girl away. The mysterious horse
takes her to a little farm. Exhausted and shivering from fear, the girl finds a place to sleep in the barn
where she hides between bales of hay. Later, the farmer and his wife discover her there and from this
moment on, they take care of her. After a few days, the farmer and his wife see the girl as a gift from
God because they had always hoped to have children of their own but it was not meant to be. When she
talks to the farmer and his wife, Agatha pretends not to remember who she is and from where she has
come because she is terrified of being returned to the evil orphanage wardens. Yet, Agatha misses her
brother who is still in the orphanage. She decides to save her brother and so it happens: On Christmas
Eve, Agatha gets on the back of the horse and sets out for London to begin her rescue mission.
Karolina Halbach, born in 1962, holds a PhD in Natural Sciences. She and her family live in the vicinity
fairs to distract the listeners while the thieves rob them of their money. Never would she have thought that
she would ever be forced to use the gift of her beautiful voice to such an end.
Finally, in a marketplace in Prague, she is discovered by the young knight and minstrel Heinrich von Meißen,
who is enchanted by her voice and recognizes her immediately: For he was a close friend of her dead love,
Reinmar. Heinrich pulls off the almost impossible: He outsmarts the robbers and Arigund is a free woman
again. Subsequently, she herself has a successful career as a minstrel singing alongside the famous
troubadour Heinrich von Meißen – in the guise of a eunuch. She sings at the royal courts of Prague and
Vienna. And Heinrich falls in love with her. But Arigund does not respond to his courtship. If she were to admit
her feelings for him, this would be the end of her disguise. As a eunuch, she feels safe… until the day when
her husband Wirtho is one of the guests at the royal court recognizing the singer Tassilo immediately as his
wife, Arigund. Her chances of telling her side of the story are slim. After all, it is her word against that of her
husband. But then Heinrich von Meißen steps in. He is willing to take the field in an ordeal by battle and fight
the accuser. In the end, Heinrich defeats Wirtho – not only winning the duel but also Arigund’s heart.
The touching tale of two lovers unfolding in a magnificent historical setting.
the coronation of Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II.
Mainz, 1212. During the celebrations of the coronation of Frederick II, the young knight Dietmar von
Ornemünde makes the acquaintance of beautiful Sophia. For both of them, it is love at first sight – yet, a
Charlotte Lyne: HEIRS OF CAIN
Historical Novel
560 pages
978-3-431-03867-5
Hardcover
October 2012
What if your protector is also your greatest enemy?
HEIRS OF CAIN is set at a fascinating historical turning point, the formation of England at the transition from
the High to the Late Middle Ages.
The scene is England at the end of the 13th century. A frightful experience robs little Amicia of her home,
Castle Carisbrooke on the Isle of Wight. Lonely, haunted by horrifying images, and lacking any knowledge of
her ancestry, she grows up disguised as a boy under the care of the brothers of Quarr Abbey.
When the monks entrust her with nursing a severely injured knight, new pictures suddenly creep into her
dreams. They are fragments, scenes from a massacre, the ice-cold stare of two piercing eyes, and a scream
that refuses to end. Although Amicia can't explain why, she finds the stranger uncanny. Nevertheless, at the
urging of the abbot she leaves the cloister and embarks on a dangerous journey through England in search of
the truth.
"Charlotte Lyne's novel GLENCOE weaves a highly dramatic Romeo-and-Juliet story. It is obvious from her
visually stunning landscapes and almost cinematic narration of the plot that she herself lived in Glencoe for
several years."
Buchjournal
"GLENCOE is raw, painful, bloody – and yet as magical and intense as only a highland plant can be, with its
ability to hold its ground against all of life's adversities."
Meet the nicest Christmas dog of all times
Mirjam Müntefering: CHRISTMAS WITH BOLLE
Novel
176 pages
978-3-431-03868-2
Hardcover
September 2012
A heartwarming story about the special bond between human and dog as well as about the question what is
more important to us: Things or love. Touching, thought provoking, and beautifully wrapped: The perfect little
Christmas book.
Chester is a very nice dog that lives in a very nice family – mainly as a playmate for Kevin, the son. However,
Kevin has less and less time for him – school is so stressful and he is always very busy »chilling« with his
friends – whatever that may mean. It is a similar story with the parents. They, too, have hardly any time for
him anymore. When they get the chance to go on an unexpected family vacation and cannot find appropriate
care for the dog, the father does not hesitate long before abandoning Chester in the street…
A homeless man by the name of Hannes finds Chester and takes him under his wing. He gives Chester the
name Bolle and with Hannes, the dog gets to experience a completely new world. The whole day long, they
are outside and everywhere they go, they meet the nicest people; they are always there for one another
helping each other whenever they can. In the process, the reader finds out about Hannes’s tragic story: He
lost his entire family in a car accident. Unable to cope with this dramatic event, he lost his house, his job, and
all his money so that he finally ended up on the street. Some time later, shortly before Christmas, when
Hannes and Bolle run by chance into Bolle’s former family, Bolle could at last return to his cozy home and
into the arms of his family. He could do that.
But what is the worth of a warm living room that is filled with people to whom he is nothing but a burden? For
Bolle, this is a no-brainer and he makes his choice in favor of life on the street. He chooses Hannes. His giant
heart. He chooses someone who loves him unconditionally and whom he can love back. And perhaps Bolle
can even contribute a tiny little bit to saving Hannes…
An enchanting little book – an entertaining read and a perfect gift
At the heart of THE LOST KINGDOM lies one of the most complex mysteries of the Middle Ages, which
remains unsolved to this very day: the kingdom of Prester John - the legendary priest and king – a realm that
was believed to contain many marvels of richness and magic and that could be found on numerous maps
from the Middle Ages – and yet, it never existed.
The trigger for the obvious confusion is a letter that started spreading through Europe in 1165, which was
supposedly written by Prester John and addressed to the Byzantine Emperor. In this letter, the priest and king
gives details of his realm, which is rumored to be located on the far side of the Orient and full of mythical and
magical creatures, surpassing all empires of the Occident in power and size. However, as it appeared evident
that the realm was a Christian nation, those in power at the time hoped to find in the Presbyter Johannes -
contemporary sources called him Prester John - a powerful ally in their fight against the infidels, all the more
so after the failure of the Second Crusade and the rise of Islam under Saladin. In 1177, Pope Alexander III
sent explorers on their way east to find the Kingdom of Johannis. They never returned home.
The novel takes place in an era that was dominated by fears and uncertainty, as the Crusader states, which
had only just begun to gain strength, were suffering severe losses and the people in the Occident were being
plagued by the fear that the end of the world was nigh.
When the crusaders have to fear that Jerusalem will fall back into the hands of Saladin, Queen Sibylla of
Jerusalem sends out the Benedictine monk Cuthbert and his loyal assistant, Rowan, to search for the
legendary kingdom. And there is only one person in the world that can lead them the way: Cassandra, a
young seeress who is tormented by inexplicable visions. Neither Rowan nor Cuthbert have the slightest idea
that they are not only on their way to discover the outer limits of their world. Their journey will also take them
to the outer limits of their faith.
"Some day it may seem worth while to take up the story of the younger ones and see what kind of
men and women they turned out to be."
Mark Twain, in his epilogue to The Adventures of Tom Sawyer
A great reunion with Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn, and lovely Becky Thatcher! THE MAN WHO NEVER
SLEPT is an unusual novel with wonderful protagonists. Much like Mark Twain's original, it is evocative, as
suspenseful as a mystery, and at the same time nimble and humorous.
July 1865. It has been years since Tom and his friend Huck rode down the river and tramped through the
forests of St. Petersburg – years since he left town and made a name for himself as a detective at the famous
Pinkerton Agency, even if he couldn't prevent President Lincoln’s assassination. Although Toms was not
responsible for Lincoln’s death, he nevertheless feels guilty and hasn’t been able to sleep since. He is
returning to his hometown to find peace and attend the wedding of his half brother, Sid and his childhood
sweetheart Becky. Yet when he arrives, what awaits him is not a wedding celebration but Aunt Polly’s funeral.
She was treacherously murdered. Actually, Tom has sworn off detective work forever, but that changes when
he hears who is suspected of the crime: his best friend, Huckleberry Finn.
"Exciting storylines, interesting and colorful characters, a portion of irreverence toward the authorities, and a
pinch of pleasant humor make this debut novel a success."
after his death.
It does not take long for Malu to get established in Berlin. She manages to make a name for herself as a
Sascha Buzmann: SHOCK FROZEN
How I survived 86 days being held captive by my tormentor
True Story/ Memoir
304 pages
978-3-431-03864-4
Hardcover
September 2012
"I finally have the strength to tell my story.” Sascha Buzmann
Sascha can already see the light shining through the living room window of his parents’ house. On this winter
afternoon, as he walks towards his home, as he has done so many times before, it is already dark outside.
He is waving the bag with his roller skates in his right hand, when he is suddenly grabbed from behind in a
headlock – at first he thinks that one of his older siblings is just teasing him, playing ambush. Even before his
mind can process a conscious thought, his sense of smell sounds the alarm. His siblings smell differently.
Whoever is holding him in his grip stinks rotten.
During this cold winter night, a man, who is a complete stranger to him, drags him for hours on end over dirt
tracks and fields with grass to an abandoned plot of land with a trailer.
There is no bathroom, no running water; at night, the rats climb into the trailer. It does not take long for
Sascha to reek as badly as his abductor. This is what will make him feel ineffably embarrassed and ashamed
upon his rescue. However, until this moment comes, the little boy will have to live through things, which are
far worse.
On January 10, 1986, nine-year-old Sascha Buzmann was abducted and forced to spend 86 days and nights
at the complete mercy of his severely emotionally disturbed and socially maladjusted captor. From January
10 to April 5, the child remained defenseless and under the complete control of his abductor. The boy was
already assumed dead when he could be freed due to a mere coincidence. Ever since, he has maintained his
silence with the exception of a Spiegel interview in early 2011. But now Sascha Buzmann is telling his story
for the very first time. How does one cope with the psychological trauma and the stigmatization of being a
victim?
“The Buzmann case is unique in the criminal history of the Federal Republic of Germany. Never before, and
never after, has a boy been held captive by his kidnapper for such an extended period of time. Sascha had
disappeared without a trace; there was no indication that he was still alive. By the time he was finally rescued,
the authorities and his family had almost lost all hope.” Der Spiegel
English summary available
Sascha Buzmann is 34 years old. Exactly as old as Adam G. was when he abducted him shattering big parts
of the boy’s future. For the past 25 years, Sascha has been forced to deal with a life that is compromised by
his traumatic past. And by now, he has learned to keep his demons at bay. In order to give himself and his
future a chance, he has now decided to finally break his silence and tell his story.
A Life without a Childhood
Monika Dahlhoff: A HANDFUL OF LIFE
My Childhood in the Gulag
True Story
272 pages
978-3-404-60714-3
Paperback
March 2013
There are not many people who have endured as much tragedy and horror in one lifetime as Monika
Dahlhoff. And there are even less people who do not crack under the strain of suffering and are able to
survive and tell their story.
Monika Dahlhoff, who was born in 1940, is still an infant when she loses her father, a soldier in the Air Force,
who is killed in action. In 1944 the family flees from Königsberg taking refuge with the grandparents in the
countryside. The mother does not stay but moves on to the West to find a place for the family where they are
safe from the Russian invasion. But the Russian soldiers are faster. Before the eyes of then 4-year-old
Monika, they shoot her beloved grandparents to death. Monika and her younger brother are deported to a
Russian labor camp. During the brutal transport, her little brother, who is physically disabled, dies in her arms.
Monika spends the next five years in this camp – under conditions that demean human dignity. There are a
few wooden shacks and some straw to sleep on, but bread or water gruel are only available at irregular
intervals; every once in a while, the children have to live on feces and rats. Many die from cold, starvation,
and disease. Monika is nine years old when the horror ends. Gravely ill and weak, she and the other surviving
children are transferred to the German Democratic Republic. At this point in time, Monika can neither read,
nor write, nor calculate. Her verbal knowledge and comprehension are limited to items and situations related
to life in the camp and lack the language competence needed for everyday life.
When a Hamburg-based tracing service tracks down her biological mother in the mid-1950s, it seems like a
silver lining on the horizon. However, her mother got remarried and has started a new family in Bavaria. It
looks as if Monika’s suffering will finally end. How can she anticipate that it will begin anew?
Over a period of three years, her stepfather sexually abuses his new stepdaughter, over and over and over
again. Her mother, whose love and protection Monika had craved for all these years, will never again get
close to her daughter. Lost and abandoned, without any formal education or job training, she packs her bag
in the dead of night, boards the first train that stops at the station, and in the middle of the night, she arrives in
Düsseldorf. She is eighteen years old and has nothing but a suitcase and 50 Deutschmarks in her pocket.
From this moment on, Monika’s life will never be the same, as she takes her fate into her own hands.
Monika Dahlhoff was born in 1940 in Kaliningrad. On her 18th birthday, she leaves her family and moves to
Düsseldorf, ready to start her own life. Today, Monika Dahlhoff has two grown daughters and lives with her
husband in Hamm.
Paperback
August 2012
Cowboys, cupcakes, chaotic wars – have the Americans gone completely mad?
Welcome to the land of unlimited oddities! Ardently loved and fervently hated – the United States is a world
power that polarizes opinion. But why is it that we find ourselves so often looking at the other side of the Big
Pond and just shaking our heads?
PLANET AMERICA is a collection of all the outrageously provocative questions about the U.S. that only a
non-American would dare to ask and of the satisfactory, honest, and witty answers of best selling author Eric
T. Hansen. He describes bizarre episodes, crazy anecdotes that “can only happen in the United States”,
drawing on newspaper articles, history books, and the treasure of experiences of his American friends,
colleagues, and his family. These stories contain secrets that only Americans are allowed to know, dreams
and fears that they prefer to hide from the rest of the world. The United States is as colorful as a circus and
as seductive as a casino. It is a stage for attention-seeking self-promoters and con artists, a refuge for
adventurers and outcasts, a melting pot brimming with surprises, a signpost, a warning, and a mystery – and,
time and again: an experiment.
With acerbic wit and unflinching sincerity, it unravels the big mysteries in an entertaining way:
Why are you constantly waving weapons around?
Tea Party? Obama a socialist? You can’t be serious!
Why are you ruining the environment as if there were no tomorrow?
Do you have to stick your noses into everybody’s business? All the time and all over the world?
A book that will make you wonder and marvel
Eric T. Hansen is a U.S. American author, born in 1960, who grew up in Hawaii. He has been living in
Sonya Kraus: BABIES. A MAJOR PROJECT
Humor
320 pages
978-3-404-60689-4
Paperback
September 2012
This is a book for all women who are expecting a baby, or any woman who already has one. And for the
woman’s best friends, sisters, and mothers – or anyone who is trying to find a present for her.
BABIES. A MAJOR PROJECT is not a classic, rose-tinted, syrupy, baby advice book that talks about the best
way to care for a future taxpayer, the best way to feed one, or the best sleeping positions? It doesn't make
recommendations for the best way to treat inflammation of the nipple or postnatal flatulence. That's all been
dutifully written up in the usual pregnancy advice books that clog bookstore shelves. Naturally, BABIES. A
MAJOR PROJECT does provide background information and a good number of tips anyway. But these are
Sonya Kraus's own subjective selections. She experienced or tested most of them herself and, in classical
fashion, provides supporting anecdotes from her own life. These personal stories are not only illustrative of
Sonya’s life as a mom but also make BABIES. A MAJOR PROJECT a very funny and entertaining read.
In terms of content, the author covers a wide range of topics. She begins with "A baby? Yes! No! Maybe?",
the difference between sex with contraception and without, general comments on nest building, and specific
details about IKEA’s children's paradise. Then she moves on to the fear of having an unhealthy child, the joy
of baby's first smile, losing but also regaining one's self-determination, myths and facts (do babies really suck
in their mothers’ beauty, and do boys make pregnant women beautiful?), experiencing your husband as
Daddy, and the milk bar that's open 24/7. As individual and personal as Sonya’s experiences are, they are
equally typical for all other women who find themselves in the same situation.
Lothar Matthäus: DO IT RIGHT OR DON'T DO IT AT ALL
Autobiography/ Memoir
272 pages
978-3-7857-2467-5
Hardcover
October 2012
An intimate look into the big business of soccer and the glamorous world of celebrities
Lothar Matthäus is one of the most successful soccer players of all times. Many of his winning goals went
down in history and became deeply ingrained in the collective memory of the global sports community. To this
day, he is known for his ingenious brilliance on the soccer field and for his courageous and at times bold way,
in which he dealt with the public – the reason why the public believes they know him. However, the public
persona Lothar Matthäus that is portrayed in the media is just a stereotype. In part, he invented this persona;
other parts are kept alive by the media, deliberately.
But Lothar Matthäus is so much more than that. He is a visionary coach, a soccer philosopher, a bon vivant
with lots of humor, and a responsible father and husband. For the first time, Lothar Matthäus allows people to
take a glimpse into his soul. He explains who and what shaped him and reminisces about the lessons he
learned during his eventful career in Germany, Italy, the United States, Austria, Serbia, Hungary, Israel, and
Bulgaria – lessons about soccer in particular and life in general – and he gives details on certain decisions
and mistakes that he made and why he made them. He talks about the meaning of friendship, family, and
relationship and describes how he found stability, trust, and hope in his life. He tells us how he became what
he is and explores the motivation of fateful decisions he made, also admitting mistakes. His autobiographical
inventory is a self-critical review – a personal account but not a reckoning. This book brings back all these
great moments from three decades of soccer history. However, Matthäus does not only look back; he also
looks ahead. His mantra has always been and is still today to give it his all. And he has many plans for his
future.
Lothar Herbert Matthäus, born in Erlangen in 1961, played during his active career in five World Cups
(1982, 1986, 1990, 1994, 1998) and is with a total of 150 appearances the most capped German player of all
time. In 1990, he captained the German team to victory in their third World Cup and he is one of only four
honorary captains of the national team. Furthermore, he was twice named World Soccer Player of the Year.
His club career includes playing for Borussia Mönchengladbach, the FC Bayern Munich, and Inter Milan. In
2001, he started his coaching career.
Family is the most beautiful thing in the world. Everyone who has a family knows that this is true. However,
family is also the most stressful thing in the world. Everyone who has a family can tell you a thing or two
about it. One is constantly challenged - no, better rephrase that: One is constantly overwhelmed. Basically,
family is a synonym for disaster. Not a single day goes by without doctor’s appointments, warning letters from
school, fights between the kids, disturbances of the mating peace in the middle of the night, unexpected visits
from grandma and grandpa, all of this turning your marriage into a foot-in-mouth disease…
Mirja and Sky du Mont share stories from their family life that offer insights into the daily insanity of a typical
family of our times. No detail is too intimate and no secret is too dark: everything gets revealed in this book to
give living proof that the grass is NOT greener on the other side. For this is the realization that each and
every one of us has to face at one point or another: Family is a dangerous experiment; things go wrong all
the time and, time and again, the results are surprising. Nevertheless, family is the most beautiful thing in the
world. Now the time has come for a declaration of love to this perfectly normal insanity that finally gives the
answers we have all been waiting for without turning a blind eye on the burning questions: „Why are we
actually doing this to ourselves?“ – „Why didn’t I stay single? Am I crazy?“ or „What the heck am I actually
doing here?“ This book enlightens, encourages and empowers but above all, it is a lot of fun. There will not
be a single dry eye in the house. Schadenfreude and the confrontation with one’s own shortcomings,
voyeurism and the relief that other people have the same problems will be equally balanced.
Sky du Mont was born in Buenos Aires in 1947. In addition to numerous productions for public and private
television stations, he appeared in a variety of Hollywood films including Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut.
Moreover, Sky du Mont has published crime novels and together with his wife, Mirja, he wrote a book about
the insanity of relationships.
Madness meets progress. You’ve never seen research like this.
The world of science does not consist exclusively of clever, groundbreaking research that furthers our
knowledge. Some of the studies conducted simply leave you shaking your head. Yet as incredible as these
studies sometimes are, they’re also funny and entertaining. Not only that, they also convey insights that
appear to make no sense, which, as is well known, is the most exciting kind of knowledge.
To cite a few examples: riding a roller coaster reduces asthma symptoms; chickens like beautiful people; and
the effect of a heavy metal concert is similar to a fist fight.
Gunther Müller has compiled the world's most preposterous studies and describes how they were conducted.
What he discovered was more than just surprising insights. These research findings might even save lives
because, after all, who knows whether an empty beer bottle is deadlier than a full one during a bar-room
brawl.
Gunther Müller was born in Dresden in 1980 and was educated at the University of Frankfurt. A political
scientist, social scientist, and social psychologist, he is fascinated far more by the bizarre questions, curious
methods, and peculiar insights of science itself than by any academic seminar.
What you can learn from the world's smartest secret agent
His name is Bond, James Bond. Even after all the years the world has known him, he has lost none of his
fascination because he’s always reinvented himself – which explains why every man still wants to be like 007.
But how does one go about it if Moneypenny is not sitting in the anteroom and M never calls back? This book
takes an in-depth, humorous, and highly suspenseful look at this agent in her Majesty's service and his
background.
This book takes a completely new, unprecedented approach to analyzing the Bond phenomenon. The
authors examine how the most successful movie hero shaped the image of masculinity over the course of
decades, as well as the extent to which the figure itself was influenced by sociopolitical changes and had to
reinvent itself without forfeiting its essential character traits. Mr. Bond is subjected to a close political, social,
and psychological investigation. The book draws on background information to present a humorous, highly
suspenseful, and unusually entertaining portrayal of the phenomenon. The authors repeatedly interviewed
the artists who had a significant influence on Bond – both in front of and behind the camera. We hear from all
five actors who played James Bond. A number of directors were also interviewed such as Guy Hamilton,
Martin Campbell, Mark Foster, Roger Spottiswoode, and Lee Tamahori. Bond girls like Shirley Eaton,
Caroline Munro, Halle Berry, and Gemma Arterton, and Bond villains such as Richard Kiel, Benicio del Toro,
Jeroen Krabbé, Gottfried John, and Mads Mikkelsen tell their stories, not to mention the famous Bond
composer John Barry and production designer Ken Adam who is a native of Germany.
A must-have present for all fans of the only true gentleman agent!
Jo Müller began his career in the mid-1980s. As a journalist with a focus on cinema and pop culture, he
worked primarily for television stations such as ARD and SWR-Fernsehen, and radio stations Südwest-,
Hessischer, and Saarländischer Rundfunk. He has published books on cinematic topics including director
Roland Emmerich, actor Ewan McGregor, and the Star Wars phenomenon. Since the early 1990s, he has
worked on various TV series and produced feature films and documentaries.
Markus Tschiedert was born in 1961. He is a film reporter and lives in Berlin.
November 2012
The real-life story of a maidservant, written in a touching and poignant manner
Inge Notz was born in 1932. Her father beats her and her siblings, and the mother puts her daughters before
the plough because she does not have farm animals to do the work in the fields. At the age of 10, Inge has to
leave her parents’ house to become a maidservant on a farm. Now she is all alone and has to fend for
herself. She is scared of her new mistress and often when her day’s work is done, she finds herself crying.
When the War ends, she is allowed to return home but hard work and regular beatings are the only things
waiting for her there.
When Inge is fifteen years old, she seeks employment again, this time as a maidservant at an inn, the
"Adlerwirt". Even though she is not spared from hard work, there are also beautiful moments: During the
winter months, she is allowed to join the others in the warm parlor and help them with knitting and she
witnesses the birth of a little calf. Inge is almost happy. And then she falls in love. However, penniless as she
is, there seems to be not the slightest glimmer of hope…
Today, Inge Notz lives outside of Marktoberdorf, the capital of the Bavarian district of Ostallgäu, and she is in
good health. In the book, she acts as the first-person narrator telling her story, which was written down by
Katrin Hummel.
Kathrin Hummel born in 1968 in Ulm/Germany, studied in Strasbourg und Fribourg French, geography and
English. She is an editor for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and author of several novels. Katrin Hummel
had many intense moments with Hilda Dohmen and gave her a voice by telling her story in GOOD NIGHT,
DARLING.
Inventions from the age of technology – from the foolish to the fatal.
After conquering our work world, in the middle of the 19th century technology began to invade our leisure
time and everyday lives. Technology held promise, it was a panacea. Inventors and tinkerers threw
everything onto the market that fantasy and production capabilities would allow – with no regard for
bothersome side effects. This book covers their most exasperating and exciting inventions:
- the lady’s dead, but she does have smooth legs – back then, we used x-rays to remove leg hair
- it’s refreshing and good for you, too – how our forebears used radioactive minerals to produce delicious
sparkling water
- let's optimize ourselves – how obscure bodybuilding machines, electric belts, and other miraculous methods
were aimed at creating the perfect body
. . . and, naturally, why certain massage apparatuses were actually vibrators.
Includes numerous historical illustrations
Frank Patalong has been employed at Spiegel Online since 1999, first as head of the Networld desk and
now as a writer since 2011. Previously he worked as a stringer and local reporter in Essen and Duisburg. As
the offspring of a mining family, he has experienced structural change firsthand.
Fermented beans for breakfast, a hula dance course in the starlight lounge, and tai chi on the sun deck. For
Dana Phillips, traveling around the world on a Japanese cruise ship becomes a cultural adventure. As the
quickly as possible. As she does so, between Tokyo and Tahiti, an entirely new horizon opens up.
Dana Phillips was born in Kronberg im Taunus in 1980. Her academic background is in journalism and
Totally absurd stories taken from real life
Justus Richter: SEATING TRIALS ON PUBLIC BENCHES MUST BE
CONDUCTED INDEPENDENTLY
Humor
224 pages
978-3-404-60719-8
Paperback
December 2012
The reasons why people across the globe go to court are sometimes almost unbelievable. This book
introduces the world's most absurd court cases; some successful, some not. We meet people who are trying
to saddle others with the responsibility for their own stupidity. We examine trials over slanderous character
assassination, and lawsuits where it's not entirely clear who has actually been victimized. We encounter
intimate facts that have been dragged into the public domain, an absurdly twisted sense of injustice, and
proceedings and legal actions that elicit only one reaction: amazed disbelief and hilarious laughter.
Short on cash? No problem! You can always find a reason to sue somebody for damages. Like the customer
of a gas station in the US. When he was unable to buy cigarettes there, he became so furious that he
shattered a glass door – and was awarded damages for his injuries. Or the Canadian who jumped off a
friend’s roof and into a swimming pool, even though he had been warned not to do so. He broke his neck,
barely survived, and the jury awarded him $2 million in compensation.
It's hard to believe. A German married couple went to court to have the price of their trip to Mauritius reduced
because the beach at their hotel was frequented primarily by natives. Equally brazen was the woman who
wanted to dodge her nightclub bill. She tried to escape through the bathroom window and broke two teeth.
She took the owner to court, and the judge ruled in her favor.
These and other damage suits prove that boldness simply pays. At least, it also has its positive aspects. The
more ridiculous the suit and the brasher the plaintiff, the greater the entertainment value and the louder we
can laugh.
peculiar verdicts and judicial decisions. Today he is glad to be back in Germany and live under German law.
