<strong>PIV</strong> Transitional is encoded with simple TLV. <strong>PIV</strong> end-point specifies the use of Basic<br />
Encoding Rules (BER-TLV). Both are defined in ISO 7816-4. For in<strong>for</strong>mational purposes, the<br />
difference between generic SIMPLE and BER is shown in the figure below. <strong>PIV</strong> <strong>End</strong>-<strong>Point</strong><br />
implements Table 5, which is non-compliant in that it has 1 byte tags <strong>for</strong> backward<br />
compatibility.<br />
