The series traces the development of English verse through the ages, giving audiences an insight into the poet’s craft. Love poems, satires, nature poems, elegies, devotional poems and comic verse are all celebrated. The poems range in level of difficulty from lower secondary to advanced study. Each short film deals with the work of a single poet, usually concentrating on just one poem, read by a contemporary poet who also comments on points of interest and gives their views. The interviews and readings are intercut with still photographs, paintings, archive film and landscapes plus all or part of the written text in typescript, or where possible, in draft manuscript.
