the dreaded workhouse, they set out on a journey that will test every
Sir Gawain and the Green Knight
Key Stage 4, GCSE and A Level
Scottish Level SG, NQs / Age 14–19
Curriculum Relevance
• Language variation
• English literary heritage
• Pre-twentieth-century poetry and literature
Sir Gawain and the Green Knight was written in the second half of the
fourteenth century in north-west England where memories of the
warring Celtic world still lingered. Written by an author whose identity
remains unknown to this day, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is
reckoned to be one of the greatest poems in Middle English and this
contemporary animation treatment retells its compelling story.
When King Arthur rashly accepts a Christmas challenge from a
mysterious stranger to engage in a beheading contest, Sir Gawain
steps forward in his stead. But nothing is as it seems. Gawain finds
himself struggling to maintain his chivalrous ideals and at the end
of this dramatic and exciting tale, comes to terms with his own
limitations.
