Coolaboola is an exploration of how language is a living form
combining comedic literary, musical and other cultural sources
available across local and national boundaries. A key message
emerging from Coolaboola is that no dialect or language form is
better or worse than any other – rather, that certain forms of
language are more appropriate than others in particular situations (or
as Swift wrote in 1720, ‘proper words in proper places’).
Identifying the influences of Gaelic, Old and Middle English and
Ulster Scots on contemporary vernacular speech, this series
emphasises how dialect can provide positive cultural identities.
In this series, Belfast novelist Glenn Patterson sets a tough challenge
for Ireland’s leading writers. He puts their talent for words to the test,
asking them to explain the craft of writing in a way that is both lively
and revealing for the GCSE student. In a journey that takes him from
workroom to audience, he investigates the process by which the
writers first choose their genre and then their words.
The series includes writers such as Graham Linehan, creator of Father
Ted, screenwriter Enda Walsh, playwright Daragh Carville, journalist
Jenny McCartney and poets Frank Ormsby and Nuala Ni Dhomhnaill.
